[Adult Swim]

We got any fans of AS here? I personally am a HUGE [as] fan (sans Tim and Eric / Xavier) and I think that Venture Brothers or ATHF would be PERFECT adventure games.

I'm a Venture Brothers fan! I also liked Harvey Birdman, but I'm not really that into their other shows.

I watched Cowboy Bebop when it was on early AS, and have always been a Space Ghost Coast to Coast fan, but other than that I'm with Doug -- Harvey Birdman and the Venture Bros are the only shows that have really stuck with me.

    Hm.

I'm with Doug and Jake on Harvey Birdman and Venture Bros., especially Venture Bros. And last season was just AWESOME.

But I'm also very highly fond of Saul of the Mole Men, and its insanely catchy theme song.

The rest of their line-up is garbage, though. Some early anime was good, before they dedicated themselves to the Shonen junk that Toonami won't air.

Harvey Birdman and Venture Bros. I find to be the only shows worth watching. The only one of those shows still in production is Venture Bros.

I miss Space Ghost, Home Movies and The Brak Show. I've never been a fan of the Japanese cartoon fad, they are so shoddily pieced together.

You are obviously watching the wrong ones then. Japanese animation has some of the best animated shows ever created. Of course a lot of shlock gets picked by AS though.

I have seen excellent Anime movies, with rich colors and extremely smooth and fluid animation; television series that employ that art style are largely nothing more than glorified slideshows and pivoting, jumpy animation.

i normally only watch family guy on there but then i watched it one sat night and found this cool show called fullmetal alchemist.

Well that's just how the Japanese animate their cartoons.
They could be thinking our animation style is odd or dumb as well.
Though I don't really isolate anime from other shows, I consider it as "just another cartoon".

If you liked Saul you should check out 'Young Persons Guide to History' same people made it, allmost all the same actors, and possibly JUST as confusing a series.

Harvey Birdman is AWESOMESAUCE. I own so much [AS] dvds but HB was the first one I bought, I got the entire series on DvD. I also own the ATHF movie(and soundtrack) and season 1 (wanna buy 2-3-4-5 but I r broke recently) I also have Squidbillies, Venture Brothers 1 and 2 (GOD I NEED 3) I have Frisky Dingo season 1 as well. I plan on picking up all of SGC2C (greatest talk show ever) The Brak Show, Sealab 2021(at least the seasons with Capt Murphy), Home Movies (I'll pick up whole series, but really I didn't like the first season wasn't very good IMO), I also want to pickup Metalocalypse and I KNOW I want Superjail! when it comes out, o yea and I have S1 of Boondocks, still need to get S2 but its expensive since Sony owns the rights not Williams Street.

I still haven't played the Birdman PS2/Wii game or the ATHF ps2 game, I heard they were OK, funny but forgetable as games go. Anyone think maybe a SCUMM style animated adventure game would fit within an [as] universe? After Tabacco brought up Birdman, I think that series would fit well into that style of game, still think that Aqua Teen would and so would Venture Brothers, but Birdman probally be the best fit.

I am a fan of venture bros and maybe Metalpocalypse though l do view the other ones, but when I have nothin to do or if the show is recent.

However, I find the majority of adult swim originals to be awful and a few are downright racist (I am lookin at you Frisky Dingo)

For some reason, Young Person's Guide to History just doesn't grab me like Saul did...I simply don't laugh or think it's funny at all.

The intentionally bad camp shows are losing their novelty REALLY quickly now.

I personally found it to be somewhat funnier than Saul, at least a couple of episodes of Saul, however I do agree with the post above that they are losing their novelty. I said when I saw this show that I believe 1 thirteen episode season would be perfect for 'Young Persons' but beyond that would be too much. As it is I'm amazed that Tim and Eric are going into what... their third season now?

P.S. The term 'racist' is thrown around a lot by people, while I don't want to say outright that you don't understand the term, I will say this. The term 'racist' by definition is:

    1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
    2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
    3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Racism and stereotyping are completely different and mutually exclusive, these shows can't 'hate', and neither do they promote a policy or system based on discrimination. The idea that they promote a belief in the superiority or right to rule over other races, is not only silly, but wrong. These shows present things in a humorous light designed to point out differences between two or more cultures, but does not state that one or the other is directly better or worse. If you take a look at Frisky Dingo itself, you'll see a few things that at first glance may seem like a poor choice in a PC world but if you actually watch the show for a bit you realize that they make fun of racial stereotyping just like they did on Sealab 2021. The 'chinese' character that runs the stereotypical dry cleaning business, turns out to actually be a white guy trying to milk a business grant out of the FBI, and Tyron the token black character in the series, while speaking in an 'urban/ebonics' style actually turns out to be one of if not THE smartest character in the series (listen to his ideas and plans during Season 2 when he is being elected Vice President).

Racist is a term people tend to fall to when something doesn't fall to the standard PC norm of society, and worse makes them feel uncomfortable (whether its conscience or sub-conscience). Now I wont say that Racism doesn't exist, far from it, even in countries set against it in their typical society like America is, due to the large populations spoon fed guilt over the tragedy that was slavery and internment camps. However a fairly large section of people fall back on the idea of racism as a scapegoat to cover things that make themselves uncomfortable or puts them into a bad position. This also simply stems from peoples lack of understanding of the word quite often, and in doing so they overgeneralize its use.

Either way though, it IS however your choice and opinion to like or dislike anything or anybody you want so I say unto thee, to each his own.

    :)

Robot Chicken and Family Guy are the only reasons i watch AS.

Oh right, I forgot about Robot Chicken. Add that one to my list I guess :)

whats that supposed to mean? (nervous jibblies)

Robot Chicken is very hit and miss for me. The sketches strike me as either brilliant or boring.

I'd say the main reason I watch Adult Swim these days is for Metalocalypse. I didn't like it when I first saw it, but it really grew on me.
  • edited November 2008
Ironically the bits I love best about Robot Chicken are the channel flips. (Fire truck on fire. Fireman: Huh... well thats a pickle.)

Superjail is my favorite thing on that network wright now. Mostly because it brought back my faith in American animators. Now I just have to wait for the Japanese to move their lazy asses. FLCL isn't going to make up for everything jerks! Most of it, but not everything.

The really short ones are probably the funniest.

I remember one with The Doctor on first base on a baseball diamond
    He said "You get it?"

    Hilariously esoteric!

Oh man oh man, [as] is a delight for children of all the legal ages. Venture Bros. is a delight, Metalocalypse is awesome, and Robot Chicken is essentially me playing with my old action figures with better writing.

But I like Frisky Dingo, and I don't totally get the racist vibe. Does having a stereotypical black guy make you racist? I don't think so, but that's just me.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is fun, and I quote my favorite Master Shake line (which was from the movie) every time I kick down a door in Gears of War:

"We're from the boys club... and we're here to throw down!"

    Also, Mooninites.

Also, I've been enjoying Mission Hill recently, although I have to be up until like 2 O'Clock to see it on any day except Friday.

Superjail is great, especially the theme song. And Fat Guy Stuck in Internet was great, I'd totally buy that DVD set. (Also, did anyone see the guy from FGSiI as George Washington in a... some cell phone commercial?)

Basically, I like alot of Adult Swim shows, but I'm all for anything that makes me laugh, and I laugh pretty easily, so...

Space Ghost Coast to Coast is the best! I almost forgot. When I was in Middle School and SGC2C was on on Friday's at 11:30 or 11:45, and I went to bed at like 10:00, so that was really late for me, but I would force myself to stay up. Those were good times.

    And, I'm done.

ATHF, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, and the Venture Bros FTW!

It annoys me that Britain is so far behind for AS releases. Metalocalypse season 1 has only just be released over here, so I just imported the two region 1 seasons.

Thank god for the internet as I love Dethklok now. Looking forward to the new album and season 3 later in the year. :D

Here in the UK we used to get Adult Swim for a short period around the turn of the century on Cartoon Network but it didn't last. More recently it was on Bravo for a year or 2, but it got cancelled last year. Now we're lucky to get the DVDs.

I enjoy Space Ghost and Harvey Birdman, i really enjoy the Frisky Dingo and the Brak show... I FUCKING LOVE METALOCOLYPSE! I also fucking love the venture brothers, but i don't fucking love them quite as much.

Some of their shows, though... 12 oz mouse was made for stoned people by stoned people. I'm pretty sure perfect hair forever was, too, but it's kinda watchable (so long as you've seen the first episode). I have yet to understand people's love of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. How does a show that sucks so much get loved by so many?
  • edited June 2009
I'm one of those weird wild cards that loved 12 Oz. Mouse and laughed hysterically at it and some of the dialog. I stopped watching after shark died though.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is watchable just basically for shake.

But the very best, most amazing original show to ever come out of Adult Swim is undoubtably the Venture Bros. The humor, characters, plot twists, bad guys, action, violence, and development is absolutely brilliant. (P.S. This is another show that would lend itself brilliantly to the adventure gaming format. I can not even stress how amazing that would be.)

The greatest non-original show to come out of it was Futurama. I love Futurama so much, for the characters you can actually care about, and the great comedic storylines. I love Fry, Bender, the Professor, Amy, Leela, Hermes, Santa Clause, Tiny Tim, and the awesome as always Zoidberg. This show is leagues ahead of and will always BE leagues ahead of Family Guy and American Dad. (And while the Venture Bros. would make a brilliant adventure game, Futurama would make one of the greatest adventure games of all time. They already tried action-platformer with it, and it sucked.)

Metalocalypse was unique and had a great sense of humor; even though I'm not much of a metal fan, I still got most of the humor behind it.

You don't have to be a big metal fan, very little of it relates to real bands and there's very few 'inside' musical jokes.

(Personally I would have done the episode where they learned to play the blues differently; metal already has its own brand of blues. We call it 'Doom Metal'. Black Sabbath are considered to be the innovators of the genre by many. It's a very slow tempo, downbeat and distorted sound with a lot of base. Bands to look out for include My Dying Bride, Electric Wizard, Candlemass, and (to an extent) Type O Negative. I'd really recommend doom to anybody, even if they're not into particularly heavy metal).

I usually watch Family Guy, Robot Chicken and ATHF, though I'm able to see most of those on my cable's On Demand service. I mainly watch Adult Swim because of the bumps they show.

You guys remember the pilot episode of 'Korgoth of Barbaria' ?? I've seen it twice and really enjoyed it. They promised a series but it never came.
