I think it's for family. He's the only Cabin group member without any family, so he could be incredibly protective of them because they're his family now, and they're the only thing between him and doing a moonshine Nick scene, only more
My biggest problem is that I don't know why Luke does what he does. Okay, so he's nice.... and...?
Kenny protects the folks he cares about… more and sometimes you have to do bad things. He has a clear goal in mind. I know him and can get behind this guy. So about Luke? Why doesn't he want Carver dead? Isn't he a bit too nice considering Zombie Apocalypse and all? Don't tell me "Oh, he doesn't lose his morals and humanity in a bad situation. That makes him a good character". No, I still like a reason for it, because most of the cabin group HAD a reason to act like jerks in Episode 1 (Season 2). So what's this guys deal?
So there are people writing essay-length analyses on a character's role in a story, but you write less than 100 words to dismiss all of that over a picture of a guy flower crown and that makes you superior?
lol people with ~Flowercrown Luke~ avatars discussing posts they found on Tumblr that go "but guys but guys Luke is more important than Kenn… morey because he's really cu-I mean he's really deep!"
They're even arguing that CLEMENTINE is there to support LUKE'S emotional journey hahahaha.
Motivated Reasoning is less interesting to me than a good bowel movement. Just admit you want to blow him and work from there.
He's always the one coming up with the 'big plan'. He saves Clem in the woods, only to drop her. He uses clever strategic skills to ensure the group's safety, but instead, Matthew ends up getting shot by a misunderstanding. He makes an elaborate plan to get the group out of Carver's camp, only for him to stuff up and get caught stealing. He tries his best to be the epitome of good-natured hero, but he just can't get there, due to his own character.
Kenny and Luke are most definitely opposites, Kenny is the ultimate survivor doing all he can when he can, Luke is the survivor who tries to be the good guy doing the 'honorable' thing when it may not be the best choice, like with Carver's fate.
I WHOLLY agree that we need to see more of him to understand him more, I definitely want to know more about Nick and Luke. I think if we get a chance, TellTale might let us understand him more.
Wanna be hero? Where did you get that idea? I didn't get that impression at all. He's clearly helping the cabin group for a reason. Even if … moreLuke was the guy who couldn't make the though choices like Kenny does and they"re both opposites of each other, he's still underused and underdeveloped, because of his disappearance act, the unexplored relationship between him and Nick (not talking about love, people, I'm only saying that Luke barely acknowledges Nick at times while Nick claims he looks up to him) and his past in general.
This is why I like Nick. He talks about himself, his experiences, his friends and families. I don't know a thing about Luke other then that he's is a good guy. If he's supposed to be a tool for the writers to have a moral compass for Clem then he's not doing his job right. It's not like they'll benefit from keeping the man who hunted your groupd down and kidnapped them alive.
So there are people writing essay-length analyses on a character's role in a story, but you write less than 100 words to dismiss all of that over a picture of a guy flower crown and that makes you superior?
-whispers- It doesn't.
I would absolutely love to hear more of Luke's background. I adore the sibling-like relationship he and Clem have been developing so I wouldn't mind at all seeing more of that. THAT HUG THOUGH.
Yesssss.. I see what you mean. We all love Lee, but fact is, NO ONE can replace him. As a partner, a friend, Luke and Kenny are perfect cand… moreidates. I almost see Luke/Kenny as Future/Past. There's ridiculous amounts of hate for Luke, for reasons unrelated to him and that is just wrong.
I sure hope he lives into the potential season three. He's a great character who could be used so much more, and I look forward to seeing a cool character arch.
I would absolutely love to hear more of Luke's background. I adore the sibling-like relationship he and Clem have been developing so I wouldn't mind at all seeing more of that. THAT HUG THOUGH.
What really warmed me up to Luke was that even though he wasn't certain whether or not the bite came from a walker or a dog, he was still looking out for her when the group wanted to just shoot her and take no risks. He came out running immediately when he heard a gunshot and instantly went to ask Clem if she was okay. He's always defending her and ugh.
One of my favourite moments between them is probably when he brings Clem food and Clem tells him about Lee and her parents. DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON WHEN SHE HAS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN SITTING WITH HIM AND KENNY. And he gets so protective when Kenny states that Clem's staying with him when they leave.
That would be really interesting development! We've heard a lot about Nick's family and everyone else's baggage but not a lot about what Luke was like pre-apocalypse. Did he have a dog? Was he close with his parents? Did he have any siblings? Was he there when they died? SO MANY QUESTIONS AND ONLY TWO EPISODES LEFT.
It's the cutest thing ever, she's all like 'you hopeless buddy' and Luke's all like 'i'll probably save you here and there' and it's so funn… morey!!!
Imma be real, I cried at the hug scene.
I'm guessing he lost a little sister to the apocalypse and he's remodeled her using Clem..
Well, all his development was really on Episode 2 - since it was a major plot point of him and his guilt of shooting Matthew.
And we all know how he was in Episode 3.
After the initial throwing Clem on the ground, I really feel he felt guilty for that, and he was constantly trying to make up for it. Actually, fun fact, if you listen to the entire kitchen conversation, Carlos reveals how Clem will die if she doesn't get treated, then Luke and Pete go into GET HER OUT mode. He convinces everyone to treat her and give her food and apologise for being 'assholes' and then that's all you can hear.
I think he's like what Chuck said, he treats her like a PERSON, not a little girl, and he's helping her have a fighting chance in the apocalypse. He deems Clem resourceful and useful enough to save his ass on the bridge compared to everyone else, like THANK YOU FOR REALISING I AM CAPABLE.
He is the only one in the cabin group to realise a girl her age this long in the apocalypse has a goddamn story, and she might want to let it out. I think ever since Clem lost Lee, Luke gave her the chance to move on and let it out. And I feel that kind of bonding equates to MONTHS together. Hell, Clem's so great, no WONDER he fights with Kenny over where she's going next XD
We need more Luke history time, so our only solution is to have a season three with him. PLEASE TELLTALE DO IT WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LUKE OK

Luke's underdevelopment is symptomatic of Season Two's general failing - the episodes are running way too short. All the great character moments that we should be spending and time inhabiting the story of each episode has been done away with. Instead, each episode pushes the story along like you're in line at a museum and being shuffled past the Mona Lisa. We're hitting Episode 4 with not nearly the same attachments or sense of understanding of the main characters that we had by the end of Episode 2 of Season 1. Based on the disappointing one hour and done experience I just had with The Wolf Among Us, I don't see this trend getting any better. It makes me worry about Telltales' new series and it doesn't bode well for the remainder of TWD Season 2.
Who in Telltale thought it was a good idea to shorten TWD episodes?
The Boss: Okay people, we need to change some things for TWD Season… more 2 since the first one was so successful. Sean, you have the floor.
Sean: This is what I think. Since Season 1 was so successful, why do we need to change anything, but the story?
The Boss: That's fucking stupid, Sean. Okay Johnson, you have the floor
Johnson: Here's my idea boss. We shorten episodes, remove hubs, and cut out character development.
The Boss: I love it! Sean pack your things because Johnson is taking your office.
And that's why Sean Vanaman is no longer working for Telltale.
People hold that incident against him but they forget that it's a natural response to seeing a bite like that. We, as players, know that Clementine was actually bit by the dog but Luke wasn't around when Sam was. He's not a bad person because he started having doubts and was scared. And yes!! I was watching a playthrough on Youtube and got to hear that part. I was like, "aww Luke".
Living in this world has forced Clementine to act and live way beyond her years. People underestimate her when they meet her but it's nice that Luke isn't so condescending towards her. She probably has the best emotional strength in the group. I think her sharing her history with Lee was huge for their development as friends.
Nobody wants Clem to leave their respective groups. :P Hell, even Nick was fighting for her, if I remember correctly.
Someone else pointed this out but I think it would be interesting if Luke's loyalty stemmed from the fact that he no longer has any family. I'm assuming his parents were attacked by walkers ('I assume it's what happened to everyone's parents..') and Nick, well, I'm guessing will be offed officially soon. It would make sense for him to view his group as his adoptive family, dysfunctional and all. It's like when he asked Clem what Carver and gangs wanted most of all: family. This apocalypse has stripped everyone of that luxury and Luke probably sees Clem like a sister by now.
Slightly off topic, what happens if Clem doesn't resist against Luke when he puts his hand over her mouth?

If we were Lee we would reject any random little girl with a bite for fear it may hurt Clem, I know I'd be concerned. He sided with us real quick, as soon as the entire group started to want Clem to go. He was standing up for her when it counted.
I love that. There's a huge difference in how Lee treated Clem and how Luke and Kenny treat Clem. Both recognise she can do shit if needs be, and they don't treat her like and infant.
Oh, for sure. He's almost adopted Clem as his little sister, for me that was clear when he wanted her for the bridge mission. There is so so so much potential for this relationship that we didn't have in season one, and I want to see more of it!!
I actually don't know, I'm currently replaying the series, on episode five (THE FEEELS) of season one now, watch this space! I'll be sure to not resist and see what happens

Oh, this is embarrassing. That's my blog (hi btw, I finally made an account here so I could comment on this thread). I meant to reply earlier, but I was avoiding the forums earlier this week to avoid TWAU spoilers. Anyway thanks for liking my blog post enough to share it on the forums here, even though it is mostly just speculation and opinion based on me overanalyzing things late one night. I honestly didn't expect anyone to even read it when I posted it, but I guess that didn't happen. And I apologize if my blog theme isn't the best for reading, I usually don't post long text posts and like I said before I don't expect people to read what I write. I have made the text size bigger to make it easier to read though, and yeah... I never meant to keep that gif on my blog so sorry if it's annoying/distracting, I've been meaning to make a replacement for awhile. And for the record I'm a girl, not a guy.
Yeah, I lurked around the forums for awhile, and I really liked your post, it made me think a lot about his character, so I thought you could use some credit. Great job on writing it btw.

Sorry if my late night wording was unclear. I meant that in the sense that Kenny is more able to make tough decisions like killing Carver, whereas Luke isn't really there yet. But if you meant that in some other way, would you please explain?
Thanks, I really appreciate it. I'm glad someone doesn't find my posts completely dreadful. It's nice to meet you too. Anyways, I'm surprised that you didn't make a thread of this.
I thought about it, but I wasn't sure so I wanted to test it out on tumblr first, and then GoneButLivedOn beat me to it. Not complaining though since they've been doing a great job with the thread.

I don't know how much I agree with it (I definitely don't agree with Luke wanting to utilize Clem). I think Luke could just be a genuinely good guy who wants to protect as many people as he can. The whole wanting to be a hero thing could make sense, though.
Have you ever heard Scott Porter sing? Ughhh. He has such a nice voice. They should do something with it.

They actually already made a thread about that on here, I linked to it on my post since it is a very great theory/character analysis, although like you I didn't agree about the Luke utilizing Clem part too, but for the most part it's a solid theory. Although I don't think it comes from Luke consciously wanting to be a hero, it's just that the world he lives in doesn't allow for heroes, and he happens to be the character that fits the ideal hero role.
And hm, I don't know about the Luke singing part. I keep seeing people suggesting that, but I don't think it'd work in-game unless they can set it up really well and it suits the mood right.
I actually saw another long post about someone's theory and perception about what Luke's character is all about:

OMG, WOW. THANK HEAVENS you don't have it out for me, I felt like I should have taken your permission first, but you're cool with it, at least!! Firstly, I loved your post. Really. If you've been around here much, you'll realise Luke gets bashed a lot here too, saw your post and it really struck with me. I'm huge into symbolism and hidden meanings and it felt RIGHT and if you look at the comments here a lot of people agree!
Maaaan, forget the nuances. You had a great post. You keep overanalysing. because to me, it felt exactly right!

Eh, guy's just a troll trying to get a rise out of people. Glad he got banned.
I know, just had to get that off my chest.
Luke has two episodes left to make a big impression. With everything else Telltale is having to juggle, I doubt they'll be able to pull it off.

One solution.
LUKE FOR SEASON THREE
All because of the shorter episodes. Hell, Carley was my BFF after the battery incident in episode one of season one. We barely get time with anyone!

I thought about it, but I wasn't sure so I wanted to test it out on tumblr first, and then GoneButLivedOn beat me to it. Not complaining though since they've been doing a great job with the thread.
I actually saw another long post about someone's theory and perception about what Luke's character is all about:

For some reason, I see Luke being a regular cast member on SESAME STREET.
YOU GO GIRL!
I'll discuss your post to the end, I just believe in it!
