America in celebration

edited January 2009 in General Chat
I'm just thrilled that Barak Obama is going to be the new president tomorrow. His inauguration is a sign that the United States has come a long way in terms of civil rights. It's also Martain Luther King Day, and the people, black and white, are celebrating in Washington, D.C. For the next couple of days, I have changed my avatar and other details of my profile to celebrate this patriotic moment. See if you can find your own American themed avatar and show them here. See ya'll around.

Oh, and to the African American members of this website, Happy MLK Day!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T0Ug0m_Hrc&feature=channel; I just felt like putting this on because its cute:).

This is a great piece of history in the making. As a Briton, I'm excited myself. I actually just bought two Obama books. :P Tomorrow is going to be amazing!

I've been watching the inauguration preparation for the last couple of days. I'm seriously excited for tomorrow. Major history in the making here.

To celebrate this moment, I'm going to see if there are any Barack Obama action figures online!
EDIT: Apparently, there is at least one.

What an incredible story he has! Born into a nation of poverty, his family moved to America where he started his life, and after two short terms in the Illinois Senate, he is able to become President of the United States while breaking records left and right for his costly campaign. It would gives hope to me, being born in the crap town of Ateleta Italy, in that I can aspire to become president as well, except that I am not a minority.

I'd change my avatar, but I live in Canada, it would be awkward.

Anyway, we get to watch the inauguration in school tomorrow, yay!

I'm excited too, but my friends aren't as much. My friend sent me a message on my Wii with a Mii of Obama and a message saying "hey look its barak obama bam bam die die die P.S he is gay : D" Yes, that's what he wrote in its entirety. He also says that Obama will most likely be assassinated. I don't really care what he does, I just really hope that he's going to be better than Bush.

    Too true.

I don't think it's possible not to be. Heck, I would be a better president than George Bush.

Okay, you do have a point there.

As much as I respect your friends' rights of speech, I am disgusted by that peice of information. As a believer of black civil rights, I decided to make this thread to commemorate the greatest event in African-American history. Next time, be careful of what you type down, because I can't stand sick jokes like that!

Don't blame me, I just needed to get that out of my chest. I didn't like him writing that either. You do have to admit, though, the fact that Obama is going to be better than Bush is unanimous.

I think he's going to be one of the best presidents in US history (and would deserve to get his head put onto Mount Rushmore), Just as long as He's alive long enough. (alot of Americans are very, VERY racist)

I'm gonna say it.... Sarah Palin. There, I said it. Now let's just steer away from opinions and celebrate. Election's over. I wonder if there is a forum board that encourages debating politics.

I was hoping to watch the historical inauguration tomorrow, but I have to go to school, and it turns out that American Government (the only class with a teacher willing to break school rules to put it on) isn't at the same time as inauguration. I suppose I'll have to watch it on DVR later tomorrow night....

My tivo is set to start recording at 7:30am tomorrow. Haven't we, as a nation, gotten to the point where we can have important government proceedings at sensible times like 8pm?
  • edited January 2009
That's funny, because I set my alarm clock to 7:30am.

I listened to the swearing in as I drove to work, and taped his speech to watch later.

And I'll admit it - I started crying during Aretha Franklin's "My Country Tis of Thee". I'm such a girl. :o

In school today, we watched a crappy internet feed that repeatedly froze, plus the projector kept breaking. At least they tried. And I'm ecstatic (I've never used that word before :P) that we have Obama, and not Dick Cheney George Bush as president.
  • edited January 2009
The best part was seeing Bush finally exiled from Washington. I hope he didn't leave anything behind because he's not coming back. Oh, and seeing Cheney in a wheelchair was oddly amusing. He's already roughly 50% machine.

dude, do you go to my school?:)

That's word for word what happened to my school. lol
We got 4 minutes into the speech and the-the---n-it---fr

The thing I think people should realize about presidents is that 90% of the population of the country would make a bad president. The trick is just to make sure they're not the ones with the office.

Well you can't expect everyone to be perfect. All we could do is hope for the best.

Hmmm... Maybe we do go to the same school... Did anybody care that we were getting such a historic new president, and that George Bush was gone? If so, you don't go to my school.

It is encouraging that the cow-boy presidency of George Bush is over.
Also i am glad to be seeing progress for the minority. I've been getting tired of hearing them calling everyone racists at the slightest different. Maybe this will help?

I am hopeful for Obama, but remember, he is just a human being. Don't put too much hope on one person, that guy needs help:)

HURRAY FOR OBAMA. I'M really happy. I hope he does well, he seems honest, and is a complete opposite of Bush/Cheney.

I am a bit unhappy that Obama said Bush was a good man...but heh.

Bush may have gone far out of the line during his time in the White House, but I pity the poor man. I learned that he has Lyme Disease, a disease caused by parasitic, vector-borne bacteria that target the nervous system. Symtoms include memory loss, balance problems, joint pain, brain fog, confusion, and word choice impediment, which would explain why he was not good at speeches.

I have found out that when he failed to lower taxes, George W. Bush used the money to buy a Donkey Kong arcade machine for the White House. (That was from Dave Letterman, not me)

Bush had horribly low acceptance rates when he left the White House, but most of that is based on the things that happened during his presidency. 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the continuous struggle in Iraq, the country's fall into recession... The sad thing is that most of these things weren't anywhere near his fault, and yet the country blames him for them. I was disgusted by the people at inauguration holding up sign telling Bush to "get the hell out". I'm no Obama-hater, and I'm very glad to see him into office, but I understand the struggles Bush went through, the difficult decisions he had to make, and the blame he took for our nation's crises. Anyone who hates Bush obviously had a bad perspective on what really happened during his presidency...

I heard he's writing a book about his presidency. I hope he calls it "Why I'm Better Than You Think I Am", although that would probably give him an even worse rap.

It would seem Obama screwed up already

I wouldn't call that a screw-up so much as something he said he was going to do almost since the beginning.

This coupled with the late stage abortion act makes me believe he suffers from psychopathy

    I beg to differ.

For Hurricane Katrina, people had to wait wayyyy to long for the president to do anything. Yes, the hurricane wasn'T his fault, but he failed at rapid intervention. Mainly because it happened in one of the poorest area in the U.s.a.

The continuous struggle in Iraq, no offense, but it's a war that was started under false pretense. It's known that Saddam Hussain and Ben Laden had no ties, plus they had no weapons of mass destruction. There is no valid reason that there is a war in Iraq. War in Iraq is the biggest mistake since Vietnam.

The country falling into recession is provoced by tons of bad decisions, mainly encouraging outsourcing labor to other countrys instead of taking measures to keep jobs in America. But of course... the consumers have a huge role to play in this situation. But still, governments should set an example... But the problem is that the Lobby's had it's hand firmly set into this puppet presidency. They are going to want to make they're powerfull friends happy over the people. They are corrupted to no ends.

Think for a second, how he is saying that outsorcing jobs is good for the economy since it costs less for the consumer ... yes it costs less, but they aren't made in the U.S.A anymore so, people loses jobs, less money to spend, these people will want to save even more so they shop at Wall-Mart, the wheel turns...more people lose they're jobs... OUTSOURCING ISN'T GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE. People have to learn to watch the bigger picture instead of always thinking of the ME HERE and NOW routine ...

And i could go on and on about 9/11, but i'm sure history will explain itself later. Much later. ( as in, what really happened ).

I think Barack Obama has been put up on an impossibly high pedestal. Sure he's the first African American President and that's great. But his fans, particularly in the 24 hour news arena, have been so rapturous that if he doesn't turn out to be the second coming of Christ(Buddha, Mohammed, what have you) they are goignt o be extremely disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I like Obama, he seems like nice guy, and I agree that W was a joke. Unfortunately he is a politiciain and all politicians, regardless of race or party, are selfish self-righteous bureacrats who wouldn't know what to do everyday if the didn't have the party line to follow and they are perfectly willing to follow that line all the way into hell and call it heaven.

The only way Obama will ever live up to all the hype is if he ignores the party line and uses some common sense in the bills and laws he passes, because with a Democrat majority in the other houses of government, he cane really screw this country up, just as bad as the Republicans could with the same advantages.

UGH, I hate my History teacher. She's republican, and that's fine, but she HATES DEMOCRATS and EVERYTHING to do with them. She's trying desperately to find as much crap on Obama as possible, and she says he's already a worse president than Bush. But since she's incredibly biased, I try not to listen to her.

obama is probably the best president you have had since before bush senior
