MI:2 Guybrush is the best. MI:SE while looking otherwise wonderful has that weird frozen thing.
  • edited June 2009
Voted Tales worst just because of that dodgy beard :D
  • edited June 2009
Kinda unfair since we even haven't got to know ToMI Guybrush. It's not all about looks yo! Can look compensate enough for lack of personality? Let's see :)

i can't really decide which one is best, because everyone has specific things... and even if someone doesnt like somewhat more cartoony appereance of Guybrush in Curse of MI, its the first one that introduced Dominic, and brought already great writings to new level. Also, Monkey 1 has genuine naive, bumbling Guybrush, who thinks he has everything to be a pirate, who thinks he is irrestisable lover.. Monkey 2 continued in that style, with great humour and style. As for Monkey 4, even if graphic is not perfect and has control problems, i think old Guybrush is there with some great jokes. One of the funny moments is when he is talking to girls, as for example when he changes voice - "Why hello there, Brittany" :D

As for the worst, it was really obvious.

This is a tough call, I like them all in their own special way.

I quite like the ToMI Guybrush... you gotta move with the times!

MI 2 Guybrush will always be my favourite of the lot I'm glad their reusing that one in TOMI. Was not a big fan of the EMI one just didn't like it looking at his eyes he looked spaced out all time.

I voted LR for best. dunno 'bout worst. they all look good. why anyone would vote for EfMI Guybrush as worst is beyond me. he's awesome.
  • edited June 2009
I'm tempted to pick all for best...
  • edited June 2009
Meh. Could never stand the "Robo-Brush" from the 4th one.
  • edited June 2009
why anyone would vote for EfMI Guybrush as worst is beyond me.

yeah i agree, and his lines, jokes are not far from the first 3 games.
  • edited June 2009
Is this regarding his personality or his appearance? If based on appearance alone, worst is a tossup between EMI and SoMI:SE, whereas personality best is either LC or CMI.

Oh shoot I should have voted for the Special Edition as the worst.. didn't even notice it was an option until after I hit submit.... I say we band together and write a bunch of emails telling them to change his sprite before release... I wouldn't even care if that means if comes out a month later..
  • edited June 2009
I'm in the same boat as Irishmile, I voted MI4, because I didn't think SE was in there
  • edited June 2009
I only voted for a bets, couldn't think of a worst. They are all the same character, but in the graphics of the game. All look good aswell, mayeb in Escape he doesn't look so great as the graphics aren't brilliant, but he is still an iconic Guybrush.
  • edited June 2009

Agreed. While I felt that the MI3 art style was not right for Monkey Island, it did have character. The Special Edition Guybrush looks sort of creepy to me.

I like the MI2 Guybrush best, too. Seemed like a perfect evolution of the character, to me.

Zombie Guybrush l' Wimp from Escape was the worst period. I like Special Edition's version, as it gathers my attention when I look at it.

After That I'd rate them best to worst...

    Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge
Tales of Monkey Island (going off of gameplay videos here)
    Curse of Monkey Island
The Secret of Monkey Island and Special Edition (It's actually unfair to rate these separately as I'm going personality wise.)
  • edited June 2009
I said tales of monkey island is the best because he looks pesonable and confident, and fun, and well Mi-one is a flat faced sprite...MI2 doesn't even look like guybrush , I was massively dissapointed in the changes made to the character IT DOESNT EVEN LOOK LIKE MI - one guybrush ! WTH is up with the stupid brown hair, and the beard and ...it let me down. Mi-3, atleast looks like the same person but in a different style that is drawn to bring out his personality more. Mi-4 looks most like the mi-one guybrush . TMI looks like The curse of monkey island guybrush , only more life like and personable. So I go with TMI AS THE BEST EVER guybrush ! Let's not even mention Guybrush SE......shoot (it) elite .

I went on looks, because otherwise how would you separate SomI and SoMI:SE Guybrush. Anyway I went LCR Best EfMI worst. I might have gone for SoMI special edition, but I haven't really seen enough to make a fair impression. Some of the concept artwork is awful though.

worst/best-looking Guybrush in my opinion (chronological order):

    worst - > MI1 (the "walk-around" Guybrush), CMI, TMI.

    best - > MI1 (the close-ups), MI2.

and by that, of course, i don't mean the looks of a game in general, just the specific character.
  • edited June 2009
Ha! Somebody votes the SOMI:SE Guybrush as their favourite? Lol. :)
  • edited June 2009
My favorite's always been CMI Guybrush, but I have a feeling that could change once TMI comes out because the more I see of Guybrush's new look, the more I like it.

EMI's definitely the worst for me. I mean, come on, did they even try to make him look the least bit piratey? He looks like he's fourteen!

I'm reserving judgment on SMI: SE for now. The main problem I have with it is his stupid-looking haircut. Who came up with that haircut?

Best: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
    Worst: Escape from Monkey Island
  • edited June 2009
They're all good. I can't really make myself pick a "worst" Guybrush.
  • edited June 2009
Secret Special Edition is by far the WORST guybrush I've ever seen! I really hope LucasArts change it before release...!!
  • edited June 2009
I voted for CMI as best because Dominic's voice really added to the game for me.

I picked TMI Guybrush for worst because it seemed to me like in MI 1-4 Guybrush's face at least looked similar...for some reason I'm having a hard time buying the new Guybrush, he looks too rough in my opinion, and I don't know how well the voice will fit. Hopefully everything works out and I really think it can but for right now I would definitely say he's the worst looking.

If you look at it in the sense that 3 and 4 had much better graphics they cant be the worse for me, I don’t have a best or worse, nothing beats number 3 so I guess I do have a best but worse, the original because of graphics id say
  • edited June 2009
for worst, i voted SMI:SE because of that new hairstyle
  • edited June 2009
I second that Smohler. The style in MI:SE is great, but Gubrush's hair sure ruins the whole thing... My favourites are MI2 and ToMI (since this one is an updated version of MI2)

I can't help but think the revamped secret art is well.. a bit ugly. I dunno if it's the crazy anime hair or the palid skin tones, or maybe that wide eyed vacant expression, but it's just.. not appealing to me. Guybrush sprite looks undead!

Art wise, I think two or three are my faves. I love 2's outfit and beard (yay for it making a comback in tales!) and I LOVE the stylised graphics of 3, I mean.. the long face and his nose.. it's just.. eeee adorable. I do like Tale's version as well, but it's rather derivative of 2 so I can't really class them as seperate entities in my own mind heh.

I always preferred Guybrush in CMI, but it's funny... I just started replaying it for the first time in a few years and he looks oddly clunky in that first cutscene, especially when listening to Elaine tell LeChuck off. And the hair! I'd bet anything it horrified fans of MI1 and MI2 when they first saw it. I'm actually not bothered by SMI:SE's Guybrush at all. I think people will get used to him sooner than they think, in actual gameplay.

But the Guybrush of EMI, with those dead, dead eyes and that vacant grin.... eeeeew.
  • edited June 2009
CMI was shocking at first, but we quickly got used to him. I don't think anyone was interested in his hair, though.

I loved monkey island 1 and 2. (I actually bought these first two games.) He was the best in mk2 for sure.

I never was able to get past how ugly guybrush was in the rest of the games. He looked so ugly and skinny that I wasn't able to play later games. Even in special edition he's too much of a poindexter and has too long a neck. I really wanted to buy the special edition just to support adventure games but I can not in good conscience support ugly threepwoods.

I'll add that Ron Gilbert had no part in the later monkey islands which might have been why they were no good. Also it seems like new games tend to take advantage of all the newest technology available. Thats why lately they are trying to turn monkey island into a doom style first person shooter.

I wish everyone would stop bashing the new look of Guybrush in SOMI:SE, its not that bad and if everyone keeps on saying the that Guybrush looks crap, they wont bother making any more Special Editions.
  • edited June 2009
It's so annoying I desperately want the special edition version BUT damn Guybrush's head is just messed up. That huge forehead and hideous hair, he just doesn't look like Guybrush.

At least he's got some beard again. The funny thing about his looks in MI2 is also, that he looked like a 25yr-old bum, that behaved at points like a teenager and was treated as one. When I first saw Guybrush from MI3 I was quite disappointed. MI1 and 2 had this slightly kreepy feel to them, that came also from the rather 'dirty' and unpolished graphics. That cannot be reached again, unless the style is made a tad darker and more realistic, less cartoony. It'd also be nice, if the surroundings were not as clean and pretty-coloured, as in the last two parts. Still, I'm looking forward to telltale's approach to MI, I'm reeeaally glad, they're around. The Last few projects were very original.

I am really into the Curse of Monkey Island Threepwood. I like him awkward looking.

I actually signed up just for this poll, because I feel pretty strongly about the new character design. I'm a huge fan since the originals. I just finished playing through the series (in it's entirety) for a 2nd time when a week later the new games were anounced. Of course I was exstatic but that changed as soon as the first screenshots were shown.

Both latest guybrush renditions look absolutely awfull IMO, there's no character in there at all! By far the worst guybrush' in the entire series, I can't believe experienced developers don't recognise a failed redesign when they see one. In Tales of MI he lacks any expressional capacity and looks like plastic, in Secret of MI:SE it's the same and he just looks moronic, in a completely unfunny way. Unbelievable and tragic.

I really really hope they'll consider a Guybrush redesign, the poll results speak for themselves.
  • edited June 2009
I think he looks very expressive in Tales from what we've seen so far. Much more so than his sprites in the other games.

    hi
    gbtw856.jpg
this is the best Guybrush IMHO

if they make a full MI5 game i wish they continue with this one.

also, for me the MI1 and MI2 are pretty much the same guybrush but at different age. Not the case with the other games that changed guybrush into another character.
