Nice! I've always liked Avatar, it'll be interesting to see it in live action.

Isn't this the film that the creator described every plot point in detail on Ubisoft's E3 talk?

No, that was a movie by I think James Cameron, and it is a completely different property than The Last Airbender.

You switched his age. It's 12, not 21.

Not a huge fan of the show (it's a fine show), but I am genuinely excited for this.

The show was pretty cute while it aired, but I wasn't particularly excited about this film. But they did go in a great direction with it stylistically, looks like they're going for the "epic" feel that I got from the series second season finale.

I also like that they went with "The Last Airbender" over a movie with "Avatar" in the title. I suppose it was partially a decision made to stop confusion with the other completely unrelated Avatar movie, but "The Last Airbender" just works well.

Generally I'd say that if I was going to see a martial arts movie, I'd watch an actual martial arts flick rather than the live action adaptation of a cartoon caricature of a martial arts flick. But this looks promising. I might see it.

Weird choice of director, I must say. Why Shyamalan? I'm not a fan of any of his movies. I suppose he's branching out? Where's the twist? =p

    Thanks for noticing. Fixed.

Ready for this one? It's a doozy...

It turns out... that he's actually the SECOND-TO-LAST Airbender!

And get this... he doesn't really bend air! He bends girders! And Bruce Willis has to swing away at the killer trees so that he can become a ghost in a village that's not as old as you would think by looking at it! And whatever the twist was in "Lady In The Water"! That one too!

    Wow.......I finally understand everything....

I never payed much attention to the show, even though I liked it. But I'm definitely delighted to see this in live action. I think It'll be interesting.

I watched the first season halfway, got bored with it, and stopped watching it, but this may be pretty good. I've never really been a fan of M. Night Shyamalamadingdong's work, so I'm just going to have to wait for a full trailer for the film.

And remember: If the film sucks, we can always riff it. If the film doesn't suck, we can still always riff it.

EDIT: I just found out that this film has the current world record for Largest Film Set. There is one set in the movie that is the size of an airplane hangar.

    M. Night Shyamalon is one of my favorite directers...but this is going too far.

He's writing and producing it as well as directing. Clearly this is a labour of love.

Huh. I can think of some other labors of love.

It's also clear by the trailer he has the ego the size of a horse. (Yes, we get that Shyamalan is making this film. You don't have to beat us over the head with this info!)

The happening pretty much sucked, maybe hes trying to redeem himself by
making a live action version of a kid show,he should direct Dora:The Movie

    What's wrong with the trailer?

But isn't every big hollywood director like that?

i.e. Michael Bay and George Lucas

New bit of news, photos of the main cast have been released:

EDIT: Paramount requested the photos be taken down from the internet, so they aren't displayed anymore.

I can see that Jasper/Sokka still has his Twilight makeup on...

Nice, ILM on a new film!

They've got.. what? 70% of the market share of all films since the 70s now? :P
  • edited July 2009
I just found the pictures, but they're just head shots. It also compares them to the animated characters.

They all look kinda right, with the possible exception of Aang who looks too serious.

This is going to blow. Every time they make a live action movie based on an anime (yes... it is english, but I still consider it an anime) they change everything & just end up ruining it. This movie has no chance unless it is written & directed by the guys who made "The Forgotten Kingdom".

That's being a little judgemental. M. Night is not changing that much from the show because it would make people mad, including his daughters, who are diehard Avatar fans. I respect your opinion, but I greatly disagree with it.

Just like the people who made Dragonball Evolution didn't change anything because they didn't want to piss off the fans of the show? I'll stand by what I said until I am proven wrong.

I'm not going to judge anything about the film until we get an official theatrical trailer.

I was prepared for the worst when I saw DB:E. I found the results to be a pleasant surprise and quite true to the original story, though. There are still one or 2 aspects I think they could have done more closely to the original but compared to some other really attrocious adaptations I've seen (super mario bros., anyone?) it was truly brilliant. (Not comparing them to other adapations it was just "very good").

My biggest worry is how it might turn out, condensing an entire season of Avatar into 1 movie.

My credo for movies is: If the film sucks, then we can all laugh at it. If it doesn't suck, then we can still all laugh at it.

What if it's good as a drama but not for it comedy?
  • edited July 2009
Knowing me, I'd probably find a way to make it funny. You ever heard of Mystery Science Theater 3000?
  • edited July 2009
Hey guys, I heard the last airbender movie is only about the first season, that its going to be a triology. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
  • edited July 2009
I can confirm it, I heard the same thing too. I did hear that he's going to film each one separately, unlike what was done for series like Lord of the Rings. If the first one's a success, the next film will be out at around 2012.

Actually, Paramount's giving M. Night a 6-year production period starting in 2010, so the next one could arrive as late as 2013.
  • edited July 2009
But still, the movie has to be pretty good at the box office in order for him to get enough money for a sequel.

    Actually no.

They basically talk during crappy movies to make fun of them on a space ship with robots. Here's a good crappy movie to get you started.

Wow, I haven't updated this in a LONG time!

Well then, here's the final trailer for The Last Airbender, and I personally think it looks amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YgaVe19zs8

Oh, and the official movie poster's been added to the first post.

EDIT: Here's the other trailer that arrived in February: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XCEbXZwjzs

I heard good things about the show but couldn't get into it.
When I heard about the movie I was interested, but I'm a bit surprised by some of the casting choices (I was sure the water benders would be Inuit or something for instance).

The trailer you just posted looks like there are lots of special effects, but... Didn't see anything in it to catch my interest. I don't think I'll go.

For some reason I keep thinking of "Bulletproof Monk"

I saw flashes of the show, never really appealed to me, certainly not with the dubbed voices. And even though I like Shyamalan's movies (yes, I'm that guy) I'm not into fantasy stories like this.

    So I'll pass for now.
