So, I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this . .

But if you choose to trust Jack towards the ending of episode two, Rhys' ECHO implant begins to glow a familiar yellow. The same exact color that is seen during the present day flashbacks.

Did anyone else catch that or am I just going crazy?

I'm wondering if it has something to do with why Fiona and Rhys are arguing so much in modern day. In episode two, they seem to be getting along decently well (very well in my game, but it varies, but at the very least, they shouldn't be spitting on each other and kicking dirt in each other's faces). Methinks Jack did something (perhaps what happened in the ending of episode two or later on) that may have caused the two to create strong distrust between each other (and Rhys' slightly distant personality in the future).

What do you guys think?

  • When I saw the orange eye after trusting Jack, I thought exactly the same, so you're not alone!

  • Yes! I am not crazy!

  • It also turns orange when Jack enhances Rhys's eye so he can hack Vasquez's gun/car, so it has something to do with his influence, yes.

Yes I caught that. I also caught in the beginning of the episode when Jack first shows up he was able to touch Rhys; his hand was on his shoulder. Then afterwards he wasn't able to Rhys again.

  • If that´s the case then damn it, I´m trying really hard to make them be friends. Don´t ruin this Jack.

  • Yeah I also noticed this.
I dont know but I have the feeling that Jack will take full control over Rhys and will return as a main villain in future Borderlands content (the next game). He already showed that he can control his arm and even his full body if Rhys allows it.
However, "modern day" Rhys does not act like Jack, so maybe he's in some kind of hybrid state at that point.

  • I'm so confused o_o I didn't trust Jack at all.

  • I don't think it'll be very likely for Rhys to become a villain.

I hate to say it, but out of all four of the characters, Rhys seems to be the least selfish, at least canonically. Maybe if Jack drives him off the deep end, which could happen, but for right now, it seems like he's alright with Jack being there (y'know, not denying his existence and all).

As for the second part of your statement, someone else suggested this on another thread and it actually makes a lot of sense. Rhys still seems sarcastic, witty and a bit playful in modern day, but he also seems a bit more cold and distant. Maybe I'm just the only one who seems to perceive it that way, but Rhys seems a bit different in modern day.

Going with your theory for right now, lol.

  • I have to agree with you. Rhys in the flashbacks is very light and wise-cracking. The Rhys we see in present time with Fiona and the stranger seems a bit more bitter overall, although still very much Rhys. So it's possible Jack is there in some form.

  • Yeah, he does seem much more bitter. My possible theories for this could:

A.) The most predictable being that Jack did something that created Rhys to act that way. Sure, he's been to hell and back in the past two or so days in-game, but he's seemed pretty strong-willed about it. A lot of people have already theorized that Jack will eventually take control of Rhys and use as a meat puppet. Jack, being the insufferable sadist that he is, could easily just snap Vaughn or Sasha's neck using Rhys out of anger or boredom. With something like that happening or even worse, it could cause Rhys to become distrustful, bitter and cold -- if you can't trust your own mind, then who can you trust?

B.) Basically ties in with Lewt_Shogun's theory. Rhys in present day is a hybrid of Jack and Rhys' personality, with Rhys being the more dominant side of the personality. Could definitely explain the clothing and bitterness, while still being occasionally witty and sarcastic. Jack could also be dormant.

Either way, Rhys doesn't seem to be too happy with Jack in present day as when asked about him by the stranger, the response is rather unpleasant. Somewhat like mentioning Jack is a minefield for bad memories, shame or regret.

  • Also worth noting that Rhys suffers a pretty nasty blow to the head by The Captor in the first scene which seems to normally summon Jack.

    • Is he there but we can't see him because it's not from Rhys' point of view?
    • Has Rhys managed to get rid of him before then?
    • Or does it not work like that if Jack's already completely taken over?
  • Jack generally has a delayed appearance if the hit knocks Rhys unconscious from what I've noticed. Otherwise, you raise a good point. So many questions, so many answers needed.

This puts my theory of Jack and Rhys' personality fusing and becoming hybrid even more likely.
