Perhaps he was only looking for recognition in saying that if it would/would not be possible down the road (with this or more likely, another series) to implement such elements.
First, that's making the assumption that we, by default, should be wanting to make all the same creative choices his screenshots make. That's being reasonably presumptuous. Second, even if we didn't wish to make images which look identical to his proposed target screenshots, looking at the trajectory we've been on should hopefully illustrate that we do have interest in upgrading our renderer and adding effects similar to the ones pointed out in the original post, but it would also be reasonably evident that change of that sort comes slowly here, as, even though we like it, it's not our primary focus. Pointing out that we should be doing something we've already been working on doing for years, and then berating us for not doing it now does nothing but frustrate! I guess it's glad that we'd like the same core tech powering Telltale games?
However, if your team chooses to respond in the way it did and take all fans comments as ultimatums, then I will certainly triple check my posts to make sure that my comments read as non-invasive as possible.
We take all fan comments as ultimatums? I hope that's not true, and I hope that that most of the rest of the forum communication says otherwise. I probably shouldn't have taken the bait on this thread. I've sent Sternenkrieger a private message and hope to continue the conversation there.

I think audiences tread lightly enough around creative professionals when commenting/critiquing their work. I know you fine folks wouldn't want bombardments of "ooh ooh, I think you need this and this!" with 3/4 of the comments pertaining to Guybrush's chin hair, but I believe a little common interest in the things that do matter would be pleasant enough.
Anyone with enough insight and appreciation of how complicated a syndicated animated television series is and the rapid production timelines, would appreciate your company's schedule. In addition to your company being small, I admire the amount of effort that goes into your products. In return I think you should relay the same amount of respect to those who understand this, and not criticize their comments solely off of the system. It is rude to do such a thing. Your responsibility as professionals is to respond in an appropriate matter, and if you need to, post a set of FAQs pretaining to suggestion giving and outlining the issues that cannot be addressed in accordance to either professional obligations or the pipeline your team needs to follow etc.
True, grammar along with word choice is a big issue on the internet. But your team are the professionals and must have enough responsibility to respond in an appropriate manner. Do not take the just's of this forum the same way you would feel obliged from a producer or director's comments.
However, if your team chooses to respond in the way it did and take all fans comments as ultimatums, then I will certainly triple check my posts to make sure that my comments read as non-invasive as possible.
Please don't attack Telltale, Sternenkrieger has since edited his posts. They were not as flattering as they are now ¬_¬ Sternenkrieger was very rude about Telltale on the MixnMojo forums. For example:
I dunno about you but I find the bland lighting and color styles in the TALES screenshots and videos to be somewhat lacking.
Maybe it's Telltale's lack of good lighting artists or their engine not having the capability for more than one dynamic light or deep shadows, I dunno.
I think people are cranky today, forgive us! I know I'd already worked 40 hours this week before today even started. And it's not even half over yet! (This week doesn't end until Tuesday. We live in a time warp)
Been there... I think the whole media-business is like that. Are you at least gonna have a day or so off when Episode 1 is released?

Yeah, we usually arent this defensive, but you wouldn't believe the amount of pressure we are under this week!
I personally think your renders look pretty damn cool! Our engine isnt in a place to do things that dramatic at the time, but with every game we are able to make small improvements! Take a look at Sam & Max: Cultur Shock and then compare it to all the fancy effects we've put into Tales of MI! The improvement is dramatic!
And there is no harm in posting you interpretation of what you'd like to see, as long as you do it with respect and don't expect us to realistically be able to affect that change. We all have our opinions of what we'd like to see in a prefect world!
Post Apocalyptic Caribbean wasteland or I'm not buying!!!
Actually, we do need something like this (maybe not this exactly) but for the final chapter, it's gotta be LeChuck's evil fortress/lava world or whatever. Something that's really different to the rest of the chapter's islands.
Although, presumably you are already working on this Don't tell me, keep it hush hush ;D

THAT'S the kind of response I expect from Telltale
And hell yeah, your visuals ARE improving with each series (except Strong Bad... sorry :P). But don't rest on your laurels

Proof that Mark is cooler than me. Mark under amazing stress is me on a normal day... which means that Mark on a normal day is amazingly awesome.

Hey, Strong bad may not have been a graphical tour de force, but our engine now had the ability to do some really cool Toon Shading and Character outlines! Aside from Strong bad, we haven't really had the opportunity to do much with it, but it's awesome that it's now there!

You must have seen what Tales looked liked toon shaded....:D
Not as good Im sure but would be interesting to see!
Thanks for not totally shitting on me.
I realized (as Scapetti pointed out so rattily) that my initial posts at MixnMojo about the "lighting" being a little bland and somewhat lacking for Monkey Island were way out of line and your typical Internet rant. I wouldn't have used those words in real-life or in front of the whole team in this thread. Typical virtual, anonymous armchair bravery.

Sorry about that, but I just couldn't stand to see Edgy McSpoon attacking Telltale like that and them all having to come in to apologise over such a stupid little thing. With you editing out all the rudeness from your posts you were just making it seem like Jake was the bad guy. I felt the need to stand in...

Don't forget the part where the air conditioner is broken and it's super hot in the programmer corner of the office. But enough bitchin'!
It really is too bad everybody had to get so heated though; but I'm glad it livened back up in here. But I figured nobody can stand reading through a month of constant whining and (expletive)-ing without getting completely tired of it. I'm tired of it, and I'm just a forum member.
Those lighting effects in the original post are well done, but look like spot light illumination to me, too harsh and bright. I really like the more subtle and natural Telltale style, as it reflects the "time period" (whenever it's supposed to be set - before electricity at least!) better.
I would say let's wait how the final result looks like.
From some of the screenshots which have been shown already i would say a little bit more saturation here and there would be nice and i strongly hope that at least the PC version will ship with high enough resolution textures to avoid the filtering mud. That would be enough eye candy for me today.
Full scene post processing shader effects are normally pretty much independent of the rest of an engine, if you don't go the deferred rendering route, and as long as you can rely on >=SM2 hardware also reasonable to implement.
Btw who was it at TTG, who once said that one of the advantages of episodic gaming is that enhancements on the engine can be done in between?! ;O)
*crossing fingers & hope you get it well done* countdown says four here already ... hurray!
But then how will we get 102 done? We'll sleep when we're dead!
Also, Irishsmile's picture just made not closing this thread worth it.
Oh snap, did he just ninja confirm a season 2? Last I checked there was no answer on that..... so why would one use the SxExx labeling system if there is no season 2?
Booya! Fresh Hot Monkey Goodness!
(P.S. I'm an ex 3Drealms forum go-er... we tend to speculate of minor things and make them seem major ;-) )

Oh, that's it. You're going down MarkDarin. I'll have you know I personally did all the lighting on Sam & Max. Incidentally, what is a key light?????
:mad::p;):D:o:rolleyes::cool::eek:
Hehe (someone would have done it eventually )
win!
Keylight is an industry-proven blue/green screen keyer. The core algorithm was written by the Computer Film Company and has been refined on scores of films. It is simple to use and is particularly good at tackling reflections, semi-transparent areas and hair. Because spill suppression is built-in, often selecting the screen colour is all you need to do to pull the matte and seat the foreground into the background so it looks photographed rather than composited.
This thread is now about photoshopping amazing crossovers.
Fine
k, im down with that
...okay maybe not amazing
Haha! Wow. This topic is hilarious.
