I swear anybody who says stuff like this hasn't been playing games for very long if they think there aren't enough female protags. And honestly, it's such a bullshit thing to care about. I'm a woman myself, and I couldn't care less who I am playing. As long as the game is good and the characters are well-written, nothing else matters.
I'll be honest I've only been playing games since about 2005, so maybe I am wrong about there not being many female protagonist. I just can't think of many recent day female protagonist outside of rpgs. Anyways I apologize for this topic. I didn't mean to come off as a total idiot.

well there are certain people on this site that care just a bit too much about something as small as this so it isn't a surprise that this got a bit heated
But why does it matter so much? There is already a substantial list of female protagonists in games (here I go bringing up lists again), and… more as people here have stated there are more female protagonists all the time. If there was like three total female protagonists in gaming I could understand being upset and thinking this is an issue. I too would be of the stance that we need more, in that instance. As it stands, that is simply not the case, there is already a large number and that number continues to grow.
Why should companies make female protagonists if they don't want to? We don't need female protagonists to become the new "generic white male with brown hair and stubble," class of protagonists. Unless of course people do want that. I personally don't care for generic protagonists of any kind. I prefer one that accurately suits the story the developers are trying to tell. If that happens to be a female, that's fine, if not, that's also… [view original content]
There was a company that asked Naughty Dog to replace the box art for The Last of Us with Joel in the front and Ellie in the back instead of the other way around. Thankfully, Naughty Dog declined.
Here's the picture:
Well if you're talking about Call of Duty or Battlefield series then those are made purely for teenage boys so don't expect them there, also if we are talking about current day military then its also pretty male dominated when it comes to regular infantry (and not medics, chopper pilots and so on). So a woman in COD would probably seem a bit out of place. When it comes to RPG's and fantasy games then I can assure you there are always an option to play as a female character, and most of women who play games (real ones and not candy crush on iPhone) actually play those and not the CoD crap.
People cry way too much, you people act like its 1864, where women are horribly mistreated, it isn't like that anymore. If women wanted to … morehave more game characters or whatever, why don't they create their own games, instead of blasting Game developers for creating the characters they created. Women can do whatever they want in this society. They have more power than men, at this point.

Isn't she already? Instead of complaining that games are sexist or not made for female gamers maybe she should start an actual company and develop a game suited for her agenda and audience. Games are products made for certain target audience, if young boys want their sexist game/move let them have it. I don't really like 50 shades of Grey (which is the same stuff for young women) but I don't complain that this film exists, I just don't see it and go to a movie I enjoy instead.
And using Call of Duty or Battlefield as an example is somewhat unfair since there are more men than women in the military (at least American) and the games having mostly male characters is somewhat justified. Not entirely, but somewhat.
Wait, why did you respond to yourself?

Don't you realize she was just a troll trying to get famous? Do you really think she cares about video games, when it all comes down to it, its just a game, why would anyone put their entire life, dedicate it to a cause, for obvious profit. How much is she making now speaking at colleges now?

I don't care. So long as the game is enjoyable I couldn't care less if I'm playing as a white male, an Asian woman, or a sentient asexual lizard. I think the system is making good on most all fronts at the moment.

The reason why so many of your favorite games have female main characters is because the games you like are relatively new and are of the RPG/story-driven genres. Female protagonists are fairly common in modern games, but historically they've been few and far between. There are lots of different reasons for this.
Video games were originally (and to some extent still are) seen as primarily a pastime for young males. If you're making games for a bunch of boys, it makes sense to have your main characters be boys or men that boys aspire to be.
The vast majority of game developers are male, and thus the games they make are going to tend to have male-centric viewpoints. They'll tend to make games based on their idols and their experiences because those are the ones they are most familiar with and the ones that are most important to them.
A lot of games are based on or inspired by historical or literary sources, which may themselves have a bias towards a male point of view. If you want to make a game about knights or samurai or make a game based on a popular comic book, your reference material is probably going to be mostly men.
There wasn't the kind of advocacy for female inclusion as there is today.
Comparing the number of female protagonists in the specific modern games you like with the number of female protagonists in general doesn't really make much sense.
It is very true that female main characters are a lot more common than they used to be, but it is still hard to convince some publishers to publish a game with a female protagonist, since they are still stuck in the old mindset. Costume Quest is a good example of this. When Tasha Sounart went to publishers for Costume Quest, THQ picked it up, but only if they added a male playable character as she was told that games with female main characters won't sell. That's how the game ended up with the twins Reynold and Wren, as opposed to the original design which just had Wren.
Of course, THQ is now gone, so a little bit of that old mindset is gone with it, and with more games with female protagonists selling well, that archaic mindset is crumbling more and more at other publishers as well.

People always want more, especially the ones who complain about things like this. The fact is that there's plenty of female protagonists, even if the majority of them aren't in "mainstream" games. Be content with what you already have or simply get over it and move on.
The "whole thing" is that you take all these female protagonists for granted.
I'm not taking them for granted. I'm thankful that the… morere are females in video games, because that's a start to what more people want.
Haven't you heard of artistic freedom?
I don't remember company's saying "ditch the female protagonist, and we'll consider your game" being classed as artistic freedom.
Complaining on the internet won't change anything.
People complaining on the internet obviously has done something about it.
Saudi Arabia is much worse place for a woman than Japan. also some Japanese games have strong female roles, even in pretty old games. Jill Valentine? Some of the female side characters in Metal Gear series?
Don't feel bad, it was a legitimate question you had so you posted about it. No harm done. If people get heated over your question that's on them not you.

I was just saying Japan is very sexist towards women, and that is where the majority of games are created/released, i understand Saudi Arabia is bad as well, but it has no correlation in regard to this discussion.
All you have to do is look at Japanese Artwork/ Anime. Come on.
As your example, look at the oversexualization of Jill Valentine. Why can't she just look like a normal girl without a perfect body/breasts/ass whatever. I would rather her be flawed than perfect, because perfection isn't real.

The thing is people that complain that there is to few female main characters sometimes use the argument that it should not matter if it is a male or female but if it does not matter what is the problem. Some of them dont even play games but they involve them self because they want to force their opinion on others. I live in a country where it is very easy to be called an angry white man because you dont agree with things that are being said and some hardcore feminist say that White men are not human not that many say that of course compared to all of them but if even just one would say something like that and society accepts it what do that say about the rest of them and it is not just one. And i prefer games with a White male main character and to be honest i dont buy games that have only a female as the main character because i am a White man and it is hard for me to relate to a female character in the same way. But that does not mean that game developers should only do games with white male main characters that is retarded they should do good games and not be affected by any group whatever their motives are.

Your opinion doesn't count because you're a straight white male. And you only don't care because straight white males are often represented in games.
Obviously I'm trolling bruh. Look at who you're replying to, YOU REALLY THINK I WOULD ACTUALLY SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT? LMAO
I don't know.
Would you?
That's up for you to decide.
theres a crap ton of girls to play as, what are you talkin' bout.
Yes, Green you are the biggest SJW I have ever met.
PogChamp
WutFace
Now let's put that up against the amount of male protagonists?
Chimmychunga.

The patriarchy.
So Anita Sarkeesian could become famous.
We all know how much the gaming industry sucks up to her.
The patriarchy is real in our current day society, I'm not saying its a good thing (quit the opposite) but its the reality.

There is a lack compared to the male protagonists in video games these days. Isn't that what the whole thing is about?
I heard about it a while ago, so I don't remember where I read it from.
I don't care. So long as the game is enjoyable I couldn't care less if I'm playing as a white male, an Asian woman, or a sentient asexual lizard. I think the system is making good on most all fronts at the moment.
There are plenty of female protagonists in games. You either don't hear about them much or they aren't promoted as much.
I sometimes forget Antia Sarkessian exists.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the Japanese, they treat women horribly.
