What do you think are some of the biggest problems in the world today?

edited September 2015 in General Chat

Here's what I think.

  1. Nobody is willing to accept accountability for their actions, nor willing to take responsibility for them.
So many people have "Who cares attitude," and one of permissiveness and acceptance.
Instead of standing up and saying "this type of behavior is wrong," people often have that attitude of "do as you please."

  2. Our spiritual leaders, don't practice what they preach.
The Churches claim to be followers of Jesus Christ.
Yet they do not live as he did!
Can you imagine Jesus stealing from others, as many of these priest have been caught doing, or molesting children?

  3. The polluting of our environment.
Every human being has the God given right to breathe clean air, eat good food, and drink clean water.
Yet the burning of fossil fuel threatens the air we breathe, and the water we drink.
And with our foods being sprayed with harmful pesticides, and our meats being injected with transfats, and other things of that nature, is it any wonder why people are getting sicker?

  4. An uncooperative and hypocrital attitude.
So many people say they want a better world, but their actions don't reflect it.
They talk about wanting to see things improve, but as soon as it requires them to sacrifice something so that improvements can be made, they're no longer interested.
Basically they end up saying by their actions: "Change the world, just don't change me."
When the truth is, in order to have a better world, it all starts with you and me, and what we are willing to do, or to change about ourselves - how we do things, so that we can have a better tomorrow.

  5. The entertainment industry.
The entertainment industry has had an absolutely poisonous influence on people today.
For instance, what you often hear in rap music, lines like "I'm a ganster", or, "I'm a thug", well what you might not realize is that it is a form of indoctrination.
The longer people are around such a message, the more of an influence it will start to have on them.
Next time you play some rap, listen very carefully to the what is being said, and see for yourself.

But it is not just rap music, but also the content in movies today.
When people witness acts of violence on a regular basis, even if it is fictional, it has a way of desensitizing people to real acts of violence.
Plus, violent movies also teach that violence is a means of solving issues.
Yet, the reality is, is that violence just begets more violence, and nothing changes.

  • Pollution, genocide, corruption, poverty, discrimination, etc.

You know, the same ones that have always been around, well, pollution is a bit more newer than the rest.

  • Not enough peace, love, and happiness going around. Too many lying, rude, untrustworthy, exploitative people everywhere.

Too many careless, corrupt government people who don't use their power and wealth to improve society.

    Conflict in the Middle East.

  • Genocide and economics. Through out the world there is either somebody getting killed by a government or organization. and economics fuck everybody's lives up with the euro being shit and the us debt

  • The endless cycle of violence.

    Religious extremism

    Shrinking middle class

National borders that are based on colonial agreements, rather than ethnic consideration

The fact that apathy is in vogue. (I'd take an insincere display of charity over a genuine display of apathy any day)

  • the usual really: wars, poverty, corrupt politicians...

society-wise there's some new problems, but those aren't nearly as important as the above

  • People with red hair.

Not accepting who you are is a big problem imo.

  • Not enough nice people, too many stupid people.

  • Too many rules. Fear of violence in society. Conformity, reproduction, general cowardice, lies, corruption in politics, greed. Greed is probably the worst thing right now. Religious extremests.

  • I would list some, but I would never be able to fathom where I should begin, nor do I think the list would satisfy me.

  • The struggling, everlasting war between left twix and right twix

  • Gingers is the politically correct term :P

  • There are unfortunately loads of problems in the world today but right now I'd say greed, selfishness and lack of morals.

The rape and destruction of the land, by greedy people who put their own selfish needs over others, and animals. Every living thing has a place in this world, and by destroying the balance,

    Human ego.

A disconnection with the spiritual side. We must be vigilant to remember the temptation in the world of the physical. People get so wrapped up in themselves, their lives just pass them by.

Too much anger, not enough forgiveness.

  • You know, just the usual.

Pollution, corruption (especially in politics), any kind of discrimination (racism, homophobia, sexism, etc), violence, people being motivated only by money.

  • I would say that's a very astute observation.
    Kudos!

  • Can you explain people's fascination with forgiveness? I just don't understand it.

That's why I think it's better for us to choose our own classes.

  • Yeah, one thing I learned in adult life is that my ability to do advanced algebra and calculus isn't terribly useful.

For non-STEM people, you only really need four math classes to get by in the real world.

    Basic Statistics

    Basic Geometry

    Personal Finance

Finite Math : (Logic and Boolean Algebra)

I learned only one of those in high-school.

  • The media telling people how to feel about something instead of thinking for themselves.

and other stuff like poverty, inequality, corruption and greed etc.

    Here's a few more.

Anti-intellectualism : People still refuse to believe that humans play a part in global warming and that vaccines don't cause autism, despite mountains of scientific evidence to the contrary. Proof enough. Also, am I the only one who's disturbed by the fact that people prefer "relatable" politicians over intelligent ones?

Public/media fixation on celebrities and trivial bullshit instead of serious issues.

The recent, global trend toward government crackdowns on independent media.

The recent, global trend of government crackdowns against civil rights groups and charitable NGO's (by democratic countries no less).

The slow death of civic duty (in America).

EDIT: Oh, and the Islamic State's plot armor

  • There's a great quote floating around that is sadly unattributed to anyone.

Not forgiving is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Holding onto a grudge makes you feel worse. Letting go of those bad feelings helps yourself. Especially in the case of someone who doesn't care about you, forgiveness helps yourself more than the person you're forgiving.

  • It's a tough one. As a STEM person, I'm very glad that I was forced to take math courses in high school. At the time, I didn't know what I would be taking in University, and not taking them would have set me back probably a year or more. I can't think of a single math concept I learned in high school that I haven't used for something useful later. But you're right that learning trigonometry functions or imaginary numbers is probably useless for someone who ends up as an English major, or doesn't go to University at all. I just kind of shrug it off and figure I was forced to learn a lot of useless things in high school as well. I've never found a use for my knowledge of the War of 1812, for example.

The dogma of unconditional forgiveness is a core belief in Christianity, so it has everything to do with it. It would be fair to assume that's what taught you to forgive everyone.

I'm against violence, but forgiveness doesn't have to come for people who don't deserve it. You can live in peace without letting people get off with the things they did by forgiving them for it.

Spoken like a true Israeli, m8.

Seriously though, I'm a big forgiver, but forgiveness is a two-way street. Forgiving someone who wronged you only works if they want to be forgiven and show genuine remorse.
