    Please rename the prefs.prop in
    D:\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead104

Please try renaming the prefs.prop file in D:\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead104 to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, and restart The Walking Dead, and you should be able to now play the 4th Episode.

hey guys, first off was able to play the game first time right out of the box so to speak with no issues. however on the 2nd go around trying to replay I ran into the black screen axe on the left issue. I have searched to try and see if I have 2 pref.prop and haven't been able to determine one way or the other. here is the link from the tool http://www.sendspace.com/file/w8b9zd. hope you guys can help me out as I'd really like to be able to play this game through more than once. stuck at start of episode 2 of season 1 black screen axe on the left, music playing mouse pointer moving, nothing else...again hope you guys can help really want to play more than once

I apologize for the inconvenience. Please rename the prefs.prop file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\WalkingDead102 to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, and then start the game. You should now be able to play the game.

I also noticed your graphics card was below minimum system requirements. I recommend updating the graphics card's drivers to the latest version as well, to make sure you do not run into any display issues later on.

  • I am having a problem with season 1 for the mac. I can play Episodes 1-3 but when I try to start episode 4 from the beginning, it starts from the part Lee picks up the walkie talkie, followed by the walker biting him. I later exited and went back in and just decided to skip episode 4, and start episode 5, but got the rewind prompt followed by a black screen. Here are the results from using the support tool: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7io2w7

    Thanks!

Please do a search on your computer for prefs.prop. You should only have one copy of this file in your save game directory. If you find another copy elsewhere, this needs to be removed. Usually this duplicate file can be found in either a Gamedata folder adjacent to your save directory, or in your installation folder. If you are playing on Steam, you will need to find the Walking Dead game data within your Steam installation folder. If you remove this prefs file, but still experience the issue, then it's possible the duplicate file is being recognized instead of the prefs in your save directory. Please take the duplicate file and move it into your save folder (which will overwrite the existing file). You may want to back-up both/all of these files before attempting this process, just in case.

Please make sure to be connected to the internet when starting the game, to make sure that you have received any and all of the patches and updates necessary to making the game run successfully. The game will install the update/patch automatically before the main menu. After this is installed, you should be able to play the game further.

After looking over your new support tool, it seems your C:\Users\Burni\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead folder has two prefs.prop files. Please move the one named prefs.prop to your desktop, and rename the one named prefs.prop.bak, back to prefs.prop, then start the game again.

I'm having the same problem. Loading 2nd episode and black screen with axe.

    Support file located at: http://www.sendspace.com/file/nh6j0b

Does not appear to have 2 prefs.prop files. My old PC died and reloaded game onto this PC... so perhaps the files copied down from Steam didn't work?

    Already verified the game cash.

    Thanks for your help.

I apologize for the inconvenience. It seems that all of the proper files are there. Unfortunately if you are unable to load your save games, they may have become corrupted. If you are using Steam Cloud syncing, and have transferred the saves to a new computer, this may be the cause of the issue as we do not recommend using Steam Cloud syncing for storing saves. Unfortunately I would recommend that you restart from the beginning of the first episode, and you should then be able to proceed past the beginning of the second episode. I sincerely apologize for any difficulties this may cause you.

If you are speaking of The Walking Dead: Season Two, please check if you have Steam cloud saves enabled. (You can check this by right clicking on the game in your Steam library, clicking properties, and click the updates tab. Near the bottom of the page, you can see if the Steam cloud is enabled for The Walking Dead: Season 2.) If it is enabled, does disabling it, and restarting Steam allow you to access your saves?

Below are a few possible solutions that should resolve your issue:

    1) Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your graphics card, and your computer’s BIOS

    2) Restart your system

    3) Unplug your gamepad (and all other USB devices other than keyboard/mouse) and plug in headphones to the audio out jack.

    4) Verify your cache if you purchased through Steam (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335)

    5) Run the game as admin

    6) Run the game in compatibility mode (right click on game, click properties, click compatibility tab , and we recommend running the game in Windows 98/ME ) (We recommend Windows 98/ME)

    7) Reinstall the game

    8) Make sure that the Steam application is not set to a compatibility mode (right click on steam and click properties, then check compatibility, and make sure that it is not checked to play in a different OS)

  • Here's my support file: https://www.sendspace.com/file/buygnl

I have the same problem as everyone else, but I don't have more than one prefs.prop file. The support data should confirm this. The only file is in /%User%/Documents/Telltale Games/The Walking Dead/.

If it helps, I transferred save data from my Mac to my PC when I was half way through episode 1. This didn't cause any immediate problems. Then, the game crashed right after the food rationing part of episode 2 and whenever I try to restart it, I see the black screen with the axe in the inventory.

I already verified my game cache with Steam.

    Any ideas?

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately save files from different platforms are incompatible. The game may be able to identify the save files, but most aspects will not carry over successfully.

If you have backed up your save files before moving them over to your PC, I recommend using the backup of save files to put back into the Mac save file directory, and then start the game.
