It wasn't easy. Double Fine had to go through Sony to get it (which is why it will only be on Sony consoles, and probably computer systems, at least at first). Telltale doesn't go through publishers to release their games (at least not since the CSI games) since they self-publish, and they don't have nearly as much clout as Sony.
If this does really well though, I'd imagine the Disney owned LucasArts would be more open to making deals with various companies to use the LucasArts adventure properties in the future.
Hopefully if they remake other games they'll involve the original authors in those as well (i.e.: Dave Grossman (Telltale)
and/or Tim Schafer (Double Fine) for Day of the Tentacle, Ron Gilbert (he's currently making games for Beep Games) and/or Gary Winnick (currently releasing a comic series called Bad Dreams, published by Red 5 Comics) for Maniac Mansion, David Fox (Electric Eggplant) for Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, Ron Gilbert and/or David Fox and/or Noah Falstein (currently at Google) for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Hal Barwood (Finite Arts) and/or Noah Falstein for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Larry Ahern and/or Jonathan Ackley (both currently at Disney Imagineering) (and hopefully Bill Tiller (Autumn Moon) for the art) for The Curse of Monkey Island, etc.
I'd love to see any of the LucasArts adventure games get a remake, but mostly the ones that have never had voice overs (Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Labyrinth - but I doubt the last one will get a remake since the Jim Henson company would need to be involved, and it's not as well known as its SCUMM and GrimE cousins).
Because they don't want to. They had created a huge fanbase with Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Bone, etc... And now they look like a company who wants to hide those games and never take them in consideration again, because... The Walking Dead.
Sam & Max did pop up in Poker Night 2, released just last year, and Kevin Bruner said that more smaller games with Sam & Max from Telltale are likely to be coming at some point in the future.
Plus, we don't know what Telltale has in store for the future, since they understandably don't reveal anything in advance anymore after the Jurassic Park delay and losing the King's Quest license. It's certainly possible that they've been going after the Disney licenses as well. It just seems that it really depends on whether or not they are willing to deal with Sony as a publisher, since apparently Sony wasn't just after the Grim Fandango license, but the license for the whole LucasArts adventure back catalog.
It will be interesting to see what comes from that, but I'm not sure if it will involve Telltale. Not because they don't care about their past licenses, since including Sam & Max in their recent crossover game proves they do (not to mention all the Banang in-jokes and the Philo Pennyworth/Midtown Cowboys references (including an audio clip from Situation Comedy) in The Wolf Among Us), but because I'm not sure if Telltale wants to go through a publisher at this point in their history, since they're now considered a publisher themselves among all the major players.

still no release date has been announced, but when the game does come out I will probably buy it.
you can still play the original game with Residual VM. you can download the software here:http://residualvm.org/
Nice to see it's coming to PC, Linux, and Mac (especially the latter, as I'm on Mac now :P) at the same time as the PlayStation 4 and Vita versions.
I can't wait for this. It's still fun to play Grim Fandango, but it's showing it's age a bit (it does a good job of hiding it though, since they really picked great character designs for the limitation of computer hardware of the time), so it will be great to have a high resolution update.

If it was so easy for Double Fine to obtain Grim Fandago's rights,
why doesn't Telltale applies for Tales of Monkey Island 2???????

I've never heard of this game. I'm gonna go and Google it.
Well, sounds like a cool game. Would have been nice if I got to play the original.
A "remastered" game should hopefully be faithful to the original in terms of game play, just "prettier."
I couldn't agree more
The interesting thing about this is Sony was trying to get the rights to Grim Fandango independently of Tim, and they're apparently trying to get the rights to all the LucasArts adventure games, so it should be interesting to see what comes from this.
