I will have to say, i am extremely disappointed in some of the people in that "private" forum, they act so entitled it is absolutely detestable. The over reaction was completely nuclear. Merging your thread does not justify bullying someone, I don't know what else to say than that. So fucking disappointed.
I liked Jennifer, she liked Kings Quest.
I hope she comes back.
You could have told us to rename it if the idea of a fan fiction having it's own off topic thread offended you that much. Then it would have been "an actual off topic thread".
That's not really the point though. They were merging all random threads, I really makes no difference what the thread is named.
I perso… morenally think it was unnecessary, but it certainly didn't warrant the kind of batshit insanity that was on display.
The thumbs down option was removed and here's what I think about it;
I think something that could've easily been avoided by just NOT paying attention to it, was escalated. People in here get too offended when they know that there's TROLLS out there who do it just to get a REACTION out of you. I think people in here are not used to that, and by simply exposing them to it and telling them how to be better than them, you'll help them grow. Not a whole lot, but just a little bit.
I myself learned of this in a forum. I think it's downright ridiculous to remove the downvote option simply because you're letting the trolls win. Just don't give them what they want, a reaction out of you, and they will simply stop. It's that simple. The downvote option served good purposes, like avoiding troll or spoiler threads.
And people aren't always going to agree with your opinion. If you can't handle the fact that the thread you started only has 5 likes and 20 thumbs down, then maybe you shouldn't be browsing the internet at all.
Now they're merging threads that talk about the same thing, despite negative, positive, or whatnot? Oh boy, I see why they went batshit crazy on the mod that quit.

There's an inherent problem in using downvotes as a way to avoid troll threads: people downvote things they simply disagree with. So a thread that expresses an unpopular opinion might be ignored by users because they see that it has so many downvotes and write it off as a troll thread. And that makes the downvote button a form of censorship: a way of getting people not to view an opinion that you disagree with. And that sucks.

What truth? That if you express an opinion and some people disagree with it, that opinion doesn't deserve to be heard? That's bullshit. Good discussions thrive on encountering ideas you've never thought of or disagree with and then trying to come to an understanding of them and getting others to come to an understanding of your opinion. Making it so only the popular, cookie-cutter opinions get attention, that's being hand-holdy and sugarcoating.
That people won't always like what you say. Simple. If your self-esteem gets hurt because of downvotes and you try to change something because your feelings got hurt, you're a child. You're not old enough to be here.
The downvote thread was literally removed because people didn't like to be disagreed with. It deserves to be heard, but not everyone will like it. You just gotta know your audience.

Am I the only one who liked having the downvote option? Of course there were trolls, but people need to learn to deal with that. Sometimes I used the downvote option on posts I disagreed with instead of commenting, so there wouldn't be a chance of starting a fight with the commenter. Now that downvotes are gone, I feel like there are going to be a lot more mean comments because we can't express how we feel by downvoting. And in result there are going to be a lot more people banned for getting in an argument. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think some people need to understand that not everyone is going to agree with their opinion, it's a part of life. For example, a lot of people are going to disagree with me about this, and that's totally fine. I just feel like taking the downvote option away might make the forums worse.
Disagreement is fine. But a downvote is a disagreement with no context or substance and that can be very frustrating. You write a long, detailed post arguing an opinion that you hold and then see that it gets 5 dislikes in fairly short order. You have no idea what you said that was objectionable, you have nothing to respond to; you just have 5 anonymous people telling you that your post is bad and you should feel bad.
If I post something that you don't agree with and you want to communicate that to me, write it. I don't care how scathing a reply to me is, it at least gives me something to respond to and argue against. And if you can't think of a reason why you disagree with my post or you don't have the mental willpower to string together a couple coherent sentences, maybe you ought not to be spending your time on a text-based internet discussion forum.

Do we need to give you a reason why we don't like your opinion?
I'm thinking you shouldn't be on the internet. What if I don't want to reply because I think your opinion is just downright stupid? Maybe people don't want to argue, or they're just too lazy. They're not necessarily telling you "feel bad" that's your misinterpretation of the downvote button. It's just mean to represent how many people do not agree or do not like what you said. Now you want an explanation? Should we punish people for not replying to someone's thread?
To be perfectly honest, I would get more irritated if no one responded to my thread at all.

You don't need to. But if you're not willing to give me a reason for why you don't like my opinion then, then why the hell should I have to acknowledge that you do?
Any opinion you throw out there on the internet is going to have people disagreeing with it. But I only care that you disagree with my opinion if you can offer me an opinion of your own. Otherwise, your disagreement is worthless to me. All it says is that some random guy on the internet doesn't like what I said. That's not information worth acknowledging.

Neither of those are actions. Those are both instances of words, dear.
And my threads and posts tend to be quite well-received, so don't really have much personal gain with this change. I just think it makes for a better community in general.

But people can still reply.

Thread: What happened to the dislike bar?
I took a long break from here, and I noticed the dislike bar is gone. What happened to it?
Too many trolls abusing it.
It's gone. People wanted it to go because of all of the dislike trolls, so they removed it. I kind of miss it .
its gone and not coming back -- hallelujah. with all the hate going laterally its a relief. I hate seeing downvotes on my coments
Wow that sucks. I agree with the dislike trolls. They were annoying
People were too afraid of expressing their opinion due to the fact they would be disliked. Plus trolls abused the feature as well.
