    Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)

First please install all windows updates.

Then check the properties of the Steam.exe, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.
Afterwards try if the game works.

If the method mentioned above didn't work, you can try disabling it in the registry. Then restart the computer and try running the game again.

Should it still crash without any compatibility mode, please open the Steam client. In the menu select "help/system information".
Right click on the information it shows and select "select all".
Right click again and select "copy".
Finally paste the results into a reply message in this thread by pressing CTRL-V.
It contains a section "Installed software", which might have sensitive entries, so feel free to redact them.

  • Hi.. I'm having the same error message with my new Walking Dead game "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working" except it never worked in the first place.. first I was getting the missing dll file message.. d3dx9_41.dll... I updated everything and just as I though it was finally working I'm getting the new error message.. So disappointed. The game was a Christmas gift.. I've tried downloading the disc, uninstalling it and re-installing it lots of times.. Spent several hours on this and am just generally frustrated now. I don't have a lot of computer knowledge but the disc should play on my pc. It isn't super old and runs windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Double clicking should work, or just pressing enter while it's selected. Did you make sure you extracted the entire .zip file first?

I have a rough theory what's happening, though not why. Please try this version instead.

You can't run it from inside the .zip file. Right click "TWD_PC_Support_Tool_no_unicode.zip" and select "extract" (or what it's called on your system). It should create a new folder containing the files. From there run the "TWD_create_support_data.bat".

I am not sure what's going wrong while extracting, but I can make it a little easier.
Please download this self extracting version. Double click it to run it, then click extract. The rest is the same as in the initial instructions.

The result is quire clear. Your integrated graphics chip doesn't meet the minimum requirements.
Intel graphics chips are not recommended and they don't work well with TTG's games.

If it's a desktop PC, you can try installing a graphics card.

Hi, DjNDB! Thanks a lot for your help.
    What I did:
    1) Updated everything I could update with Windows Update; -> No improvements

    2) Checked the properties of both Steam.exe and WalkingDead101.exe, non compatibility settings there; -> No Improvements

    3) Tried editing the registry: I had no Steam entry at those address, so I didn't edit anything;

So I copied my system informations.

    Okay, that's good so far.

Please check if the game crash creates an entry in the
event viewer in the "Windows Logs/Application" section.
If so, right click the entry, select "copy the details as text", and paste it in a new reply.

If there are multiple different entries, please copy one of each type.

I went through all the data again and found the cause.
Your documents folder is linked to be on your CD drive, which won't work for the game because it needs to write there.
If you still have the drive that used to be E: when you moved it, you can make it E: again, and move the documents folder back properly.

Alternatively you can do it in the registry, but then you need to move the files from the previous documents folder back manually if you want them there.

    First, open a command window:

    • Press the Windows key. Type in "cmd" and press enter

Then copy the command line below and paste it into the command window, press enter, and confirm the question. Make sure you get the entire two lines of text at once, because it's actually one line:

REG EXPORT "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" sf_backup.reg

That's a backup of the current settings, just in case. Now do the same with this line to set the folder back to the default value. This is also supposed to be in one line:

    REG ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v Personal /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d ^%USERPROFILE^%\Documents\

Right after that the game should work without compatibility mode.

Posting the error codes together with my version so they can be found in the future:

    Hi,

Recently my Windows 8.1 Pro Preview (what you said may have caused a problem for me in the past) ran out so I went back to using Windows 7 64bit.

However I'm still getting the error. Interestingly I only get it upon clicking "click to continue" - and the game works fine with the internet off.

Is there any way of playing it with the internet on? I read earlier you said something about updating the bios, but on other forums people are saying updating your bios can be quite dangerous.

Just in case it's something else causing the problem here's my TWD file: http://www.sendspace.com/file/h0986n

    Thanks in advance.

Updating the BIOS is the only thing that has fixed it for some people so far. It doesn't help in every case, because it of course depends on the changes in the BIOS versions and I can't predict anything.

There are warnings about updating the BIOS, because if it fails, it can put your system into a state that's hard to recover from. Most modern Mainboards have Failsafes for that or easy recovery options, so it's not as bad as lots of years ago. It depends on the specific model how it all works though and you should read the manual thoroughly, have some computer experience and feel confident you understand what you're doing before trying things. In the easiest case it's just a matter of running a program under windows. Recovery is either automatic, or manual by booting with a BIOS file on a USB drive, CD or Disk. In the worst case recovery involves extracting and flashing the BIOS chip with special hardware, but that should be rare cases nowadays. I never had to do that in decades of updating BIOSes and only rarely (maybe 2-3 times) had any problems updating a BIOS, and if so, the recovery method worked.

If you want a different safe but crappy workaround, you can install Windows in a Vmware player Virtual Machine and run the game there. It will run a bit slower so you might have to adjust graphics settings, but at least you would be able to play online and get achievements.

I wish there was a better solution of course, but that's all I have at the moment.

  • Thank you very much for the detailed response, I appreciate it! :)

I'll have a look into updating my motherboard bios and probably give it ago/ tell you if it fixes the problem.

    Cheers again.

I noticed that you got it to work in the past, by disconnecting from the internet. Does that still work?

Please try if it works while being connected, if you run it during a clean boot. Make sure your ESET firewall is disabled.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your settings by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

The only other thing that has worked for some people is updating the BIOS. You can get the latest BIOS for your system on the DELL support page. While you're at it, you should update your drivers too.
