More adventure?

edited August 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I'm so glad Monkey Island is back, since this episode awakened my lust for Adventure Games once again.
Although I must admit it has been gone for like 10 years or so.
I played the 2 Sam & Max seasons and enjoyed them a bit, but not as much as I did with this awesome episode.

Now I would like to play some more Adventure games, but there is 1 big problem....
I can't seem able to find any good ones!
Ofcourse I played all the Lucasarts Classics and the Sierra ones growing up, but that's about it.

I get really sick and tired of those games like Still life and such which have generic stories and no humor in it.

Does anybody have a suggestion for another awesome Adventure Game like the Monkey Island series or even perhaps a bit more serious?

The Longest Journey and Syberia 1 and 2 are very worth playing.

Runaway: a road adventure and its sequel are both great.

I second The Longest Journey. The sequel, Dreamfall is good too though very different.

I remember playing The Longest Journey once a few years back, but I didn't like it as much since the protagonist is a woman and I found it hard to identify myself with her (no sexism intented).

I also played Runaway, but the humor was so lame I recall.
    Or am I wrong here?

However, I will install those two again and give it another go, perhaps now I will learn to love them :)

Runaway is bad.. The puzzles are stupid, voice acting is ridiculous, characters are boring, cutscenes are boring and uninspired, and music is unmemorable. All it has is good graphics, and even with them, you still have to pixel hunt a lot.

    .....right

    Any more suggestion? :)

Phoenix Wright is one of the best adventure game series you can find on the DS.

Did you try 'A Vampyre Story'? It's pretty decent.

If you can't relate to April Ryan, please give do yourself a favor and give Syberia a miss. Kate Walker is in my opinion one of the least interesting protagonist in recent adventure games.

Ceville and Ankh are cartoonish and have quite a bit of humor. But as with all humor filled game, most jokes are usually hit or miss.

If you are looking for something more serious, you could consider Still Life.

    The Westerner is quite neat.
But other than Runaway or this I couldn't really recommend any modern adventure game.
    With the exception of TellTale's.
Do not touch "So Blonde" though. This game sucks.

    i totally agree.
Syberia worths a play just to enjoy backgrounds but puzzles are pratically absent or so intuitive that, hardly, you'll ever find yourself stuck.

I also loved Runaway and Secret Files (and both sequels). at least those games have very challenging puzzles (like the one of the four shields in Broken Sword 4)!

Have you played Broken Sword 1+2? I'm replaying them these days and they're both great games! :D A bit heavy on conversation at times but it's all well written. :) I got mine from Sold-out but they also have BS2 over at GoG.

Have you tried Jack Kean? I really liked it.

If you're alright with old-school graphics there are some really good indie games by Yahtzee that you can download at the AGS site. I've played 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic, both were well done considering it was made entirely by one person and I intend to play the rest of his games.

Speaking of yahtzee, I hope he doesn't review TMI! ;)

    Anyone play the game

So Blonde? Is it any good?

Have to admit that is a pet peeve - don't like too much talking, get bored. It's all about the objects and puzzles and awesome locations for me. MI2/3 were a good balance.

I'm still playing sam and max season 1 episode 1, it's fun but not pulling me back to play as much as I hoped.

So Blonde is decent, but nothing more. You get quite a few laughs caused by the character being so shallow.

Not a bad time killer. There are plenty of worse options.

Think I will finally play A Vampyre Story. Did a Maniac Mansion replay recently, along with some experimenting in the fan Deluxe version (they did add the feed the meteor to the plant option from the NES version), and some exploring in the famicom version (weird.....)

I played The Westerner long ago, I remember hating/being annoyed by the travel mechanic about feeding the horse carrots or something like that. It should be noted it is the second game of a trilogy, the first being 3 Skulls of the Toltecs (you probably need DOSbox to run it) and the third Fennimore Fillmore's Revenge (for which the developers decided to get rid of the cartoony look, and go more "realistic") .

I think Star Trek 25th Anniversary was a pretty good adventure game, but never finished it. Blade Runner seems to be good too.

Ah, forgot to mention this one:

    http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=377

It is a free fangame, Cirque de Zale, in a style like a cross between Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer. Quite enjoyable.

Really, there's no need to. April is a very troubled young woman, you're not supposed to identify with her. You should, however, care for what happens to her, which should not be too difficult for a man. ;)
If you do, TLJ is an incredibly immersive and very long adventure with traditional puzzles. It also features a shameless quantity of LucasArts references, although it's not a LucasArts game. I play it at least once a year.

Toonstruck was pretty good, the main characters are voiced by Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown in Back to the Future) and Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson). I haven't played Noir but the first two Discworlds were also quite good, although Discworld 1 has some of the most ridiculous and illogical puzzles in any adventure game. The voice cast in both games is really great starring lots of well-known British actors like Eric Idle, Tony Robinson, Jon Pertwee, Nigel Planer and Rob Brydon.

Discworld 1+2 were both great but yea some of the puzzles were a bit far fetched. Discworld seems to perfect for adventure games and upon reflection in the future I can see the film world pouncing on Pratchett's worlds, would be very nice if done right.

Still Life is great if you don't mind a bit of crime scene gore. For some reason I haven't been able to really get into Still Life 2, but it got good reviews.

Syberia 1 and 2 are worth checking out. They're working on 3.

I think Jack Keane is quite good.
Much better than any of the three Ankh's, IMHO.

I'm replaying The Longest Journey now and I quite like it this time.

I'll give Jack Keane a go later on

I was hoping the exact opposite. Yahtzee have to expose all the problem with TMI. I could identify the overuse of certain puzzle design and the 'ghost' town syndrome so far for TMI. I'm sure there are more.

That Gilbert Goodmate game looks awesome!
    Never heard of it before.
I'm trying to find it like crazy; anyone know where to look?

I havn't played it myself, but i've heard good things about 'Orion Burger'

looks pretty good, at least graphically.

There are a few games available for free on the ScummVM site, like Flight of the Amazon Queen, and Beneath a Steel Sky.

They're a bit old, but like I said, they're free.
  • edited July 2009
Beneath a Steel Sky is great. Flight of the Amazon Queen feels very dated, but it's okay.

Anybody knows where to get Gilbert Goodmate?
Even "illegalwise" its nowhere to be found

As mentioned previously, "The Longest Journey" is well worth your time. It's my second-favorite adventure. My first would be Jordan Mechner's "The Last Express". I've never experienced another that so thoroughly and realistically captured a particular place and time. If I had to choose to live my life inside an adventure game, that's where I would like to end up.
