You'll find a worthwhile post with interesting and intelligent conversation but that seems more rare by the day.
Yeah, that's admittedly been on my mind for a while. Are you guys open to any ideas that we could implement as mods to fix this? As I said, I don't dislike memes/shipping threads/etc or anything, but at the back of my mind lately, I was wondering if there was anything we could do as mods to help push for more of a shift towards actual discussion without being overbearing or enforcing any weird rules.
Memes/etc are fun and all, but I would like to do something to encourage people to want to have more actual discussions without forcing people to do anything.
Not really lately. Especially when there's a drought and Telltale don't release anything for a few good few months it gets downright boring … moresince there's nothing to talk about. You'll find a worthwhile post with interesting and intelligent conversation but that seems more rare by the day. There's people on the forums you like and some ya don't. Always interesting to hear what people think though (even if it does sound ridiculous at times. cough Lee's still alive theorists cough
I wouldn't even go as far as to say it was Walking Dead's heavy choices that prompted interesting discussion - I think that, just in general, people on the forums kinda shifted in general towards using mainly memes for discussion for whatever reason.
That's true, but I'm not even asking for high-effort discussion (even though it is great). I'm just curious how to get more of a push for normal discussions period.
I don't want to be heavy handed and push for anything excessive, but I'm open to ideas that would help push for people to want to have more actual discussions.
This is probably above your (metaphorical) pay grade, but one cool idea might be having occasional AMA type discussions with Telltale Staff or voice actors. It would probably require heavy moderator though.

This is just kinda food for thought in general, but do you guys think having Telltale Talk at the top of the forums would help bring in more… more lively discussion? It actually was at the top of the forums for a while when this current version of the forums launched in September 2013, but I think Telltale moved it down around that Winter.
Oh please dont divert away from topic, just stick to whatever you understand and no need to be extra smart. If this word is bothering you so much just ignore it, as i said its for anyone who has been here for like 2 years.
To me, I come back here because while people change and some come and some go, it's always fun to talk to them all! And have these discussions and talk about certain subjects and express ourselves! I've always liked these forums! Even after the change to the website some time before S2.
And speaking of S2, the only reason not much is going on right now is because there's no series going on right now other than Michonne (And Minecraft but nah)! These forums always have that downtime some time or another! Once Batman starts up, or S3, trust me, the forums will be back into full swing just like their "glory days"!
I don't enjoy them as much as I did back in the TWD days. I was more active then, and while the community certainly wasn't perfect, (the bickering about particularly decisive choices comes to mind) I generally felt more involved in it. Now I mostly just post down here in the off-topic section. Not even sure what happened to a lot of people I used to chat with.
Confession time, i'm an alt, (Sniper please don't ban me, is just that i hadn't posted in my other account in like a year and i didn't like the name anyways). But anyways, i joined back when S2 of TWD was being released and i decided to come back a few days ago because i really had fun with this forum. From what i have seen so far, with a few new faces here and there of course, everything seems like the sameOnly noticeable difference i can see is that the Whatever's On Your Mind megathread isn't what it used to be, which is kinda sad. Then again, i've only been a here for a couple of days so my impression might change.
One of the things that has sucked the enjoyment out for me is that no one ever changes their opinions. It's not the fact that people stick to their beliefs that I find dull, it's that the arguments/debates never end. I see massive debates going on, across multiple threads, being argued over the course of I'd say a year for some topics, and no one ever changes their minds. It starts to make things feel stale when even after hundreds of posts on a topic it's still being argued. I'm not going to name any topics off the top of my head, but this is something I've seen in TWD section as well as the Off-Topic section. After a while I see these same old threads/arguments, and I just have to sigh and move on.
I keep thinking, I haven't played any of Telltale's newer games, so I should just quit coming here. And yet, I keep coming here. Weird.
I can tell you that with the current forum software, if there was a massive increase in number of posts, I would be flooded out and have to stop reading anyway. The older software was easier to keep up with.
Some of the meaningless chatter threads are fun to read, and some are not. I wish I could precisely define what the difference between them is.
i joined pretty much around the time season 2 was released/during the wait for a house divided so i don't know if you can really say old timer about me (actually no, no you cannot haha) but i have to say that the time where twd and wolf were being released was the prime time for me, the community felt more connected and friendly and it seemed back then more people could take a joke and just have fun with a discussion and it was just generally more fun to get involved in discussions
i don't mean to or try to offend anyone that is active nowadays but to me right now this place has more cringy/oversensitive members than fun members that were around two years ago and that just makes it harder to say its fun to be around here but thats not to say there aren't still people like that here atm it's just to me they don't stand out as much anymore. The only time i could really say these people really stood out was in the tales section while it was releasing but idk maybe i've just changed or maybe the newer active members would think we were cringey back then idk and yes there were also cringey/oversensitive members back then but not as much from i remember.
the walking dead section has gone to complete shit too still can't even mention kenny without being crucified and they are filled with the same threads constantly but then again thats what happens when it's being nearly 2 years since the last main episode (doesn't seem michonne is able to carry much discussions for that long)
so yea thats what i think i'm sure many would disagree with me probs think i'm just no fun or something along those lines and thats fair enough but thats just how i seen the forum change since then and thats why often times i'll just lurk from time to time
I wouldn't say that it's still fun to be around, it's more like it's a habit at this point. All the topics for the games that I have an interest in have been discussed into the ground, and I don't bother with the games I have no interest in. I really only check general discussion anymore, and even here I'd say I check out about 1/7 threads due to repetition, stupidity, or I just don't care about what the thread is about. It seems like I hardly ever post any more.
It's kind of weird to see who ends up sticking around after a game's community starts to drop off. When everyone who joined around the same time you did to talk about the same game you wanted to talk about stops showing up it can be a little disorienting. I think most people that have been here for a while have that moment where they sign in and are like, "Who are all these people? I don't recognize anyone anymore."

To be fair, that's because each new Telltale game brings in different fans. I'd say that, with Telltale's newer games, the fans from new franchises playing the game outnumber the consistent Telltale fans, but that's not a bad thing. It's just a result of Telltale's niche, really. Because Telltale's games are more "one-and-done" interactive stories, there is only so much you can discuss from one Season before people move on. However, there are some people who afterwards stick around at Telltale Talk and try out the other games as well.
I was relatively active for a bit of time during Season 2, but afterwords it just seemed like the forum deteriorated into either toxic discussions or threads that are based around memes, which I've never really been fond of. I continue to lurk for news and to follow the occasional interesting thread or fanfiction, but posting has kind of lost it's luster to me. In a way it just seems like everyone is so...immature now. A lot of the times when I click on a thread I'm already anticipating cringe worthy and toxic comments, and I'm usually not disappointed. Maybe it's just me, I've been meaning to try and get back into the discussion. Perhaps that will change how I feel about the forums right now.
I don't really consider myself a "old timer" as i joined after The Walking Dead season 1 ended, when i think of old time Telltale fans i think about people form the days of Sam and Max or Tales of Monkey Island.
I have been a member here since January 2013 and a moderator since June 2014 and have noticed a change in activity more so recently, i think some of that is due some members moving on after The Walking Dead season 2, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderland or Game of Thrones season 1 finished or not visiting the forums while they wait The Walking Dead season 3, Game of Thrones season 2 or any other announced title from Telltale.
The current games are still popular but there seems to be less active members discussing them which is why the forum feels slower and less active.
I joined for Sam & Max Season 3. I felt I needed a fresh start after a bit and rejoined for Back To The Future. I took a long hiatus after The Walking Dead Season 1 and the forum/community kerfuffle(I still don't accept it) and just came back.
I will say this: The forum is more fun than the shit-show when I left. I guess some of you outgrew the self-entitlement thing and the rest were just banned.
I've been here since about beginning of 2014, I believe. I think they aren't as fun as what they used to be, but, in saying that, I still come here. (Though I haven't been much around of late and because of that I've lost my mod status, hopefully one of the mods can tell me why that is.)
i wouldn't consider myself an old timer, and i joined in july 2012(for the walking dead) i think of an old timer as pre-walking dead and perhaps even pre-jurassic park

Well, one of the things I enjoyed the most when I came to this website was to see all the ongoing discussions and theories about TWAU and who did it, since that's one of my favourite genres. So I found out that when Ep.5 came out there wasn't that much left to discuss (apart from the whole Faith/Nerissa thing).
I was never really an avid poster and mostly lurk nowadays, but I find the Telltale Talk really interesting sometimes and one of the main reasons I still check the page daily, and I think that when Telltale releases Batman (my preferred genre), maybe I'll start being more active again.
Let's not get hung up on semantics. You've been here long enough to know how things have changed over the last few years. Seeing as you joined back in 2012, it would be nice to have your input.
i wouldn't consider myself an old timer, and i joined in july 2012(for the walking dead) i think of an old timer as pre-walking dead and perhaps even pre-jurassic park
I've been around here quite awhile, but I only started posting regularly here around 2014-ish onwards. The community here is quite different to the one it was in 2011 I'll tell you guys that. Far more active for one, and the crowd here are far more diverse now (think that's thanks to just how many IPs Telltale has made games of since, as well as having a far larger audience).
It feels like if that lifelong friend came on to you and you didn't feel the same way at all and now you're just trying to be friends and put it behind you. Let's all just try to forget you tried to put your pinky in my butt-hole, TTG. I think we can do this.
well, i very much enjoyed some pretty deep discussions about morality and the psychology of TWD season one, and i had some very fun sort of crazy off the wall discussions about it as well, i even did quite a bit of fan art, because at the time the fan art was kind of lacking, and i felt this was a way i could show some genuine support to the creators, even if my drawings were generally a bit silly it came from a genuine love of the game.
i think at the time (i joined) maybe half of the regular forum members were "old timers" (of my definition) meaning they were fans of old school point and click games, a lot of them would have said that even back to the future was even a bit to far away from those games than they wanted let alone jurassic park or the walking dead, but not all, and maybe some have changed their mind since.
that along with the general mature tone of the walking dead meant that much more of the regular forum members were adults, and if not there was a bit more maturity to the general discussions at the time, not that it was totally serious (far from it a lot of the time) but you could have a discussion on whether video games were art for example and the majority of the people in the discussion would have thought about what they wrote and given genuine personal responses, and not necessarily needed a gif or a picture with words on it to express their opinion.
however i think from season two of the walking dead onwards, more younger people joined the forums, and perhaps a lot more people overall as well, and in my opinion this meant a much larger percentage of discussions are what you might call immature.
i wouldn't say that less serious discussions happen, but there is just a lot more..... not serious stuff to get through, and sometimes that can mean what could have been an interesting discussion never gets going, and that's not to say that as an adult it is impossible to joke about serious thing or derail a conversation (i do/did that a lot) but i think a group of adults will have different discussions to a group of young/older teens.
there could be more factors to this, like more walking dead doesn't necessarily mean new topics to really discuss in depth (because they have been talked about before) and i personally think the idea of computer games being discussed as serious drama was a new thing back then, but now it is sort of expected (which to me is a good thing) but this means there is less to talk about on that subject as well.
maybe the conclusion is that demographics of the forums has changed and times have changed.
also it could just me, but conversations about games really only seem to last for a week between each episode and maybe a month after the final before there is really nothing much said, but the walking dead season one, discussions about the previous episode would be very strong right up until the next one, i don't know if that is true of every game, but that is what i have noticed on the forums i see.
Let's not get hung up on semantics. You've been here long enough to know how things have changed over the last few years. Seeing as you joined back in 2012, it would be nice to have your input.

Yeah, I've noticed that shift toward memes, It's a shame too, because high-effort discussion is very enriching IMO.

I'll think on it.

It's not like it used to be, I miss the good old days.
It's still better than Minecraft Story Mode lol
Same.

This thread inspired me to make this new thread for general, self aware discussion about the forums as well as to discuss various trends and whatnot.

It used to be a lot more fun when it was TFTB era. Minecraft kids had to come and ruin it though.
Please, give this men 1,000,000 likes
Minecraft fans haven't been bad, though. I don't get your scapegoating.

Same.
I guess it's just a common internet trend these days; to bash all who enjoy Minecraft.

Yeah. It still has interesting threads, really amazing people, awesome discussions and fantastic fan fictions.

The Minecraft fans haven't ruined anything, they stay in their own section and happily discuss the game without causing any problems.
