I could have dealt with the multi character gimmick if the level design was decent. But it wasn't.

Sonic Adventure is the only good post-Genesis Sonic game. Had an excellent soundtrack too (except for the cop-out by using the title theme as the final boss music). SA2 had an ok soundtrack but wasn't as good as SA1. The game wasn't as interesting either. Everything that came afterwards was pure crap musically and gameplay-wise.

I rate the soundtrack to Sonic Unleashed as possibly the best of the 3D titles, if not the series. What were your thoughts on the music from that game?

Every single one of the new sonic games songs get a 10/10 with me. Half of which(I am all of me, all hail shadow, his world, knight of the wind, fight the knight.) are on my dsi to listen to.

I haven't heard much of anything from that one yet. I did like that Right Here Right Now song or whatever it's called. That's the only one that's stuck out to me from what I've heard of the later games. I don't like all the cheesy punk rock songs (especially the ones with lyrics. That's so stupid to put in for level music) in any of the 3D Sonic games.

Regardless, I should look up some of the newer tracks on YouTube.

Sorry, Sonic games are a product of a bygone era, last one I played was the creativley titled "Sonic The Hedgehog" on the 360, and it was a complete mess. Terrible level design, dodgy controls, some of the most hateful characters ever and loading times EVERYWHERE! I'd a Dreamcast, I liked the Sonic Adventures, but let's call it a day folks.

In other news Ristar pwns all! :P

Definitely. I hum some of them regurlarly, just like the tunes from the old Sonic games. I liked the fact there was only one song at the end of the game, and it was quite good, fitting with Sonic's universe (and using an instrumental version of the song during the last boss was clever).

    What?

"Mister Needlemouse" was how Sonic was called at the very beginnings of the project in 1990, befor being renamed "Sonic".

So giving this new game the working title "Project Needlemouse" is a way for Sega to say : "we're going back to the roots".

Seriously, how often has this phrase been tossed about in the media of late? it's like saying all creative output for the last ten years has been meritless.

Even just look at the last thread I read

This is how it works with Sonic games. Teaser 1: Very short, No real content. Teaser 2: Reveal gimmick, Make people dissapointed.

I don't think they have it in them to actually make this good, but if I actually find this entertaining, I will sit down with my box set of Sonic Underground and watch it through from beginning to end. That's how much faith I'm putting in that they can't do it right.

As I've said elsewhere, I honestly think that Sega has been slowly but surely getting better. Ever since the utter mess that was Sonic 06, they seem to have started to listen to the fans and make games that have been gradually getting better in quality. Sonic Rivals, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Unleashed (The WiiS2 version, anyway) and Sonic and the Black Knight have all been gradual steps in the right direction.

I'm still not going to make any formal commitment until I actually see proper gameplay, but I do have faith that it won't be a complete mess.

I liked Sonic the Hedgehog 3 best, while Sonic was my favorite character... All in all, a great franchise.

Best game: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Favorite character: First, during the two first games, it was Sonic. Then it was Knuckles. I think today it's Dr. Robotnik. The old doctor never disappoints me. He's always awesome.

You know what gives me hopes about the new game? The spinning sound in the teaser. I miss spinning in Sonic games since Sonic Adventure 2. Stupid sommersault kick...

My favorite sonic game would be sonic 2, mainly for the nostalgia. Favorite character robotnic, hands down. I'ts just something cool with a dudes whos arse you repeatedly kick over and over and over again who still doesn't give up, now that's dedication!

I'm also quite happy to be able to play the old games again, as most of you probably know they've been releasing the old sonic games on xbla, been enjoying playing sonic 1,2,3 and sonic and knuckles for a while now, great for nostalgia trips and impressing the GF ;)

Impressing the GF? With Sonic games? How in the world does that work?

I like this Opa-Opa fellow and not just for being named for one of the best game characters ever.

Who'd have thought in 2008 we'd get an amazing new Fantasy Zone game, but still no decent Sonic in sight?

My fav game is also Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I think they struck a good balance between being able to dash through the levels and being able to explore them. The later 2D/3D games (like Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush) are pretty good, but they don't strike the balance quite as well as Sonic3K did.

Incidentally, I managed to get Sonic3K running on my Wii via Rom Injection. I won't go into details about it as it's technically illegal. I've also done the same thing with some Sonic hacks as well. No links, also illegal. But I will say this - they're great fun.

I hate how people talk about Sonic 3 & Knuckles like its own game that includes Sonic 3. Sonic & Knuckles was a pretty steep drop-off, and Sonic 3 was excellent even without the expansion.
  • edited October 2009
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is what Sonic 3 should have been, had the developers had enough time to finish it. They didn't, so they decided to release Sonic 3 first, then Sonic & Knuckles as an expansion. If you put them together, you get what Sonic 3 should have been been in the first place.

Producer / Lead Programmer Yuji Naka confirms this in the last paragraph on this page..

In this case that might have been a good thing, though. It's a "tighter edit."

It's like Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. In the theaters it was cut down to fit the format, like 85 minutes. On video they released what it was "meant to be" with an extra 15 minutes of annoying chick chat that made it a worse movie. Not all director's cuts are good.

By your logic, Sonic 3 would be be better without the Flying Battery and Death Egg zones, which is just plain crazy talk. I will agree that we could have lived without Sandopolis, though.

But then again, we're not going to convince the other that they're wrong, are we? I like Sonic3K, you prefer just Sonic3. Nowt wrong with that.

EDIT: Woo, post 150. Go me.
  • edited October 2009
Sandopolis, Mushroom Hill... there's a lot of garbagey levels in S&K. I never wanted to play it over regular Sonic 3. Sonic is the best character to play as and Sonic 3's levels are better than anything in S&K, so why settle for a crappy encore?

    Classics:

    Sonic
    Sonic 2
    Sonic 3
    Sonic & Knuckles
    Sonic CD

Every other Sonic game has been tragically awful. Sonic DOES NOT work in a 3D atmosphere. He's too fast, and the Sega developers just can't make a good 3D game to save their lives. Bring him back to 2D with HD graphics and you have a winning franchise again.

    Characters:

    Sonic
    Tails
    Knuckles
Dr. Robotnik (This Eggman crap is bulls**t, he's Dr. Robotnik)
    Amy
    Metal Sonic

These are the only acceptable characters, and only Amy because she was ok in Sonic CD and there should be a love interest. All the other characters are disgustingly bad. Also, never let Sonic interact with humans ever again.

He was only Robotnik in the US version. So really, he was always Eggman.

Also, the Sonic Adventures weren't that bad, I tell you!

Once they picked the name they should have stuck with it.

It's like if now we changed Mega Man's name to Rock Man. So what if he was always Rock Man? WE know him as Mega Man, so that's what his name shall stay.

The problem was in Sonic Adventure where there's a puzzle where you have to spell out EGGMAN. Wouldn't make sense otherwise.

    There isn't a problem there...

If they had kept with Robotnik like they should have the puzzle would have been to spell his name instead. Also, are you saying in Japan they have to solve English puzzles?
  • edited October 2009
Yes, Japanese know the English alphabet and the puzzle is in English in the import.

Also that puzzle would have had to have been reworked considerably to spell out the much longer name "Robotnik."

This is the actual reason that they made the change. It's just a fact, convincing me it was stupid won't change it.

Then you spell out a different 6-letter word? If they actually said..."Well, we don't want to change this puzzle for the import so let's make his name Eggman from now on! Who cares if he's been established as Dr. Robotnik for years!"...then Sega really have lost their minds and it's no wonder they failed.

You can't develop a name with all the Genesis games and the older cartoon series and then suddenly switch it up. Well, I guess you can, and you can also bury a solid franchise into the ground like Sega did with Sonic.

Would have required having more buttons though, aka it's easier for the developers just to leave it as EGGMAN. I didn't see any problem with it tbh.

You still have to change the textures. Easier for the developers just to leave it as it is.

Tbh I've just left it as Dr Robotnik is his full name, and Eggman is his nickname... Which makes just as much sense.

Which is what they did in Sonic Adventure. SA2 they changed it, I forget why.

Nowhere in the Genesis games did they call him robotnik, and the cartoons weren't made by sega themselves.

Also, wouldn't Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog be even more annoying if you replace "Eggman" with "Robotnik"?

"LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROBOTNIK ROBOTS!" -Tails.
"IT'S DOCTOR ROBOTNIK!" -Vector the annoying prat who needs to get a better voice actor.
