Brutal Legend Demo

edited October 2009 in General Chat
Played it & I must say that I was expecting the game to be ALOT funnier. Still yet, the last couple of minutes of the demo were sorta funny & I really liked the gameplay engine. What are your thought?

Where do you download the demo? PSN?
  • edited September 2009
Gah I can't play. I have PS3, and I preordered, but you don't get Early Access here in Australia.

    Damn Gamestop.

Wait... not as funny? It's not as good as Psychonauts?!?

I heard the demo was pretty much just the tutorial and not much of the story.

That's to be expected I suppose.

I've still got in preorder, so I will play it when it comes out October 15th.

    Damn Australian release dates.

The demo is maybe 10 minutes long, if you take your time.

Boooooo! We have to wait until the 1st in the UK.

    That's a lot of gameplay for a 2gig download.

    I think I'll pass.

Fury - the Batman Arkham asylum demo was just as big, and lasted me even lesser.
Ten minutes is you do it slowly. You should get used to it is all I'm saying. Dang, gotta get a better connection meself.
I'm personally not trying the demo, they always ruin it for me.

I don't mind demo's. But not when a mega download is involved.

Whatever happened to magazines that came with demo discs? They like don't exist anymore.
  • edited September 2009
The demo is about 20-30 minutes long & none of it is tutorial. Things pop up on the screen telling you how to do things, but it never mentions anything through the dialogue. That's not to say the game sucks or anything... I really enjoyed the demo... it is just not as funny as I expected it to be.

For who ever asked.... I got it on the Xbox marketplace (It should be noted that I am American).

Tim Schafer consistantly makes good games, so I am not to worried about that. I just thought that the game would be hilarious considering all things... who knows.... it may turn out to be in the end.
  • edited October 2009
It probably will be hilarious at the end. Psychonauts was awesome, but it wasn't funny until a fair bit in, the first world wasn't as funny as the later ones.

I wouldn't worry about Brutal Legend.

But it's 1.6Gig, I'm not downloading that lol. I've already preordered, so I'll just get it then.

It's just a bit "meh" looking to me personally, not to mention I can't stand the vast majority of metal and looking at the soundtrack makes me cry. I mean Manowar and Dokken on the same game, surely that's a punishment fitting for sadists!!

If you like great writing, witticisms and beautifully realized art design: then why should this game not be for you? The thematic is not one I instantly warm to, yet I know everything else within the game is more or less going to deliver by the bucket load.

Well I don't play golf, or are even interested in it but own the new Tiger Woods game on Wii. Simply because with the MotionPlus controls it sets itself apart from what there was before and makes it a unique gaming experience

Like I said, i'm sure it'll be a fine game. But the fact of the matter is that the whole theme has been trod right down into the ground into overkill (at least for me). The real shame being Schafer's had this idea knocking about for ages but only now because of Guitar Hero has the market climate been right to release it. The addition of Jack Black and Kyle Gass doing voice acting (albeit Gass in a bit-part) make me think of this more as "Tenacious D: The Game", and i'm sure there's going to be alot of parallels in there that are only gonna make me think this moreso. For me it's all just a big turn-off

I would buy 3 copies if it were Tenacious D: The Game.

Jack Black is kinda funny, but most of the time he isn't. All his movies have been painful and I'm really worried he's gonna fuck up Brutal Legend. The only hope I'm clinging to is that Jack Black said his favourite game was Psychonauts... So maybe there is some humour in there after all.

The upside to Jack Black is that although the game will potentially be mainstream crap, it will sell better as a result. And none of us want to see DoubleFine go under.

I am half & half on his stuff. I like some of his movies enough to put them in my top 30, but others I think just plain out suck. What you aren't seeming to realize is that actors have SCRIPTS. If the writing is good, then the movie or games story will be good almost regardless of who is in it (providing that they are talent). So yes... I think it will be good, because Jack Black is definitely talented.

I'm not sure what you guys were on about when talking about the demo. I thought it was hillarious, maybe not through obvious gags, but there were many details that made me laugh/astound me in equal measure. In short I was blown away, and I had previously prepared myself for disappointment.

To remain on topic, I can understand why people might not like JB, personally I think he's quite funny, but he is only doing the voice so it shouldn't matter too much for you guys.

a unique experience: which is similar to golf. You wouldn't like it if you had zero interest in golf whatsoever, you may not like those that play it or follow it, but that is not the same as having no interest, you like the principle of the game.

    also case and point.

By said logic I like the principle of working for the mob and running old ladies down cos I play GTA, or I like the principle of being a heartless warmonger cos I played as Genghis Khan on Civilization.

Games are what they are, games. They appeal to our competitive side, to either beat a computer or to beat our friends who we play them with. And sometimes we get this all gift-wrapped with a nice story and theme all round it, cracking!

My beef with Brutal Legend is that it's just been done over and over and over again, from Spinal Tap to the unwitting Anvil, I don't dislike the whole idea behind it, but for me it's all very tired and needs a rest.

But if you're up for it and are looking forward to the game, then I honestly hope you guys enjoy it (nothing stings more than £40 or so spent on a rubbish game), which i'm sure you will, Tim Schafer doesn't make crap.

It is the gimmick of the band... they are heavy metal warriors. Listen to some of there music sometime..... it is pretty much all they talk about.

I actually like Manowar too.... they have some really killer songs if you just look under the exterior.... plus they totally don't dress like that. They pretty much wear all leather like most metal bands.

Two films? One was a mockumentary released in 1984 and Anvil was a recent documentary about a once big band who have fallen by the wayside. How that says "done to death" is beyond me. I think you are generalizing a little too much here. For some reason you seem to take music/ryhtym games as the "metal rock thematic being done to death" whereas Brutal Legend shares more in common with the likes of God of War gameplay wise and just happens to be built around the Norse/Metal ethos(which up until this point - has existed in no game).

Spinal Tap - mockumentary, has a playful dig at the metal scene

Anvil - documentary about an unsuccesful metal band, quite poignant at times, but laughs to be had at the bands expense "Hilarious" - Rolling Stone. "Outrageous" - LA Weekly. I'm sure there's more to this effect, I just grabbed em off the promo poster http://geektyrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/anvil-poster_3_2-690x1024.jpg

Fubar - mockumentary about two metalheads

Tenacious D - two fat blokes singing about metal, satan and how awesome they are, one good album, one crappy soundtrack

Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny - unfunny film about two fat blokes singi....yeah you get the idea

Satanicide - mock metal band from New York

The Darkness - tounge-in-cheek glam rock band, singer's a junkie now or some crap, spawned similiar side projects British Whale and Hot Leg

    ...and of course

Manowar - possibly the greatest and most prolific "IRL trolls" of all-time. Have been fooling metal fans for nearly 30 years now singing of being "metal warriors" and pursuing accomplishments such as "Loudest band in the world." Bass player and founder Joey DeMaio plays bass with tiny guage strings, actually just making it a guitar sans two strings, replete crap distortion when he solos, it's rumoured he does this for "the craic". Manowar as a band are in prime physical condition, many speculate this is to defend themselves against many ex-fans when they've been finally been exposed having a laugh at their fans expense and money :p

As much as "Football" should be a name that applies to a game in which you mainly use your FEET and a ball is somehow involved, I find the name "Handegg" to be stupidly whimsical for the sport we're talking about. An american football isn't even shaped that much like an egg!

To add to your list, though:
Type O Negative: Also IRL trolls, fooling mallgoths while making damn good music for those in on the joke.

That being said, I don't think Brutal Legend can compare to any faux-metal movies/bands/etc. All of the things you've listed are rooted in more or less realistic situations (besides Pick of Destiny). BL, on the other hand, is entirely fantastical. Cultists, monsters, mountains of skulls, magical guitars... completely different from the Spinal Taps and Anvils of the world.
