Pretty much any song from Streets of Rage 2, but especially the Good Ending theme. I love this song for reasons I literally cannot describe.

EDIT: Ok, this is just random. I was browsing through the 'Similar Videos' section on YouTube, and ended up with a mix between my fav SoR2 song and Michael Jackson's 'Who Is It?'. It's so bizarre! Hear for yourself.

Man, I miss old video game scores.

The Brütal Legend Soundtrack (not the songs) has been unleashed on Amazon and iTunes.
I like it, even though I'd like it even more if they'd come up with the EPIC release of ALL tracks from the game (just like GTA did everytime)

There was never a complete GTA soundtrack, they were often a 2 disc affair, with only select songs. Which is unfortunate.

I think we should make a thread about best soundtrack in adventure games only.

    Lies!

I am the 'proud' owner of the 6 CD GTA Vice City soundtrack, which I picked up for a tenner at HMV a few years back. I'm fairly certain they did something similar with San Andreas as well, but I don't have that. Wasn't quite as fond of the music in that game... too much swearing.

I have the Vice City and the San Andreas box.
But they both are missing some (VC) or even a lot (SA) of the songs.

Mario Galaxy (great use of the sound engine during boss fights with Bowser too)
Grim Fandango (although the art style helps the soundtrack out I think)
Final Fantasy VII (though they're all the same really)
CoD: MW2 (I'm a big Hanns Zimmer fan)
S&M Season 1 (marginally over Season 2 as there's more musical numbers)

Worst soundtrack goes to anything that's trying to be Danny Elfman (Discworld was a culprit for this I think) or if Elfman himself has composed a game. My hate for his stuff is beyond unnatural

Wait, you don't like Danny Elfman? I find his scores dark, and beautiful..but that's me though.

I prefer John Willams, but both are great composers for what they create.

Danny Elfman made the Batman theme. Which is the greatest theme song in the world. How can you dislike his work???

You better not be talking about Discworld 1 matey! Also how can you hate the man that brought us the all time classic "Little Girls". :D

I just don't like it, i've no real reason, maybe it's because I associate it with all that Tim Burton imagery that I dislike as well. If you want me to suffer make me sit through a Burton film with an Elfman score (which is the vast majority if not all of them) i'll have chewed my eyes and ears out by the end

Pee Wee's Big Adventure was awesome though, despite how much Burton tried to ruin it and Rebuens letting us all down years later

The same way you can be unimpressed with Grim Fandango, MI.

I like Danny Elfman, and the Batman theme, but there are definitely other contenders for the title of "greatest theme song in the world"! Like almost anything by John Williams: Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park spring to mind.

Alan Silvestri also deserves a mention for the Back to the Future theme (probably my personal favourite).

Aw... I suddenly have a burning need for an epic movie marathon. :p

There isn't really a heck of a lot of VG soundtracks I listen to in my off-gameplay time. I hear them enough in the games themselves as is. Despite that, there are some that have been stayers in my Winamp playlist for quite a couple years now.

Nobuo Uematsu - Zeromus Battle (Final Fantasy IV)

It's the greatest battle theme ever in gaming. Every time you hear it you feel some kinda weird empowering feeling that makes you feel like you can take on anything. Dramatic, epic and heroic...what else could you possibly want? Uematsu's work is over 50% of what makes Final Fantasy good...which would explain the recent decline of quality in the series. Ah well.

Clint Bajakian - Sanchez the Outlaw (Outlaws)

Outlaws is my favourite shooter ever. And Bajakian's spaghetti western score is a major contributing factor to the game's awesomeness. Lots of Ennio Morricone-style music in here, but done with an original, personal twist that is undeniably masterful. The best of these is "Sanchez the Outlaw", an epic duel theme played by what sounds like demon Mariachis from hell. Greatest horn section in a game ever. And hey, I even know it on the guitar!

McConnell/Land/Bajakian - The World's Largest Ball of Twine (Sam & Max Hit the Road)

Sam & Max Hit the Road is my favourite adventure game soundtrack. Everything's so original, catchy and eerily evocative in some non-gtatuitous way. The song played around the World's Largest Ball of Twine is the epitome of this; bright, cheery and one of those songs that can loop over and over without getting tired of it. It's timeless in a way.

I agree with puzzlebox. Danny Elfman has done some fantastic stuff, and he's definitely one of my favourite composers when it comes to theme music, but there are quite a few other great composers out there too!

But everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and Elfman isn't everyone's cup of tea.

The intro music from Fable (first part) was done by Danny as well. And its awesome.

Prexactly sir. Another thing, as much as I love John Williams I think i'm going off him. Everytime I see a film I can spot his score a mile off because it's so distinctive and all i can focus on is how "John Williamsy" the score is, and then I can't focus on the movie at all. It's a strange one, but in the end for me a score is supposed to add to the scenes in the film, whereas a Williams score to me just stands out a mile off.

But just to clarify i do like the music :)

I don't know that its my favorite sound track, but I definitely get the sound track to any given Zelda game in my head often enough. I can't say how often I've been in a really random group of people I wouldn't think would know that and someone starts humming it. And then everyone does, of course.

I think its cuz you have to play so many of the songs. They stick with you better that way.

Who here likes any of the Katamari soundtracks?

I they are a bit catchy.

Katamari does have some catchy songs, I agree. But majority of them are just plain weird. XD

The Legend of Zelda : Wind Waker has some beautiful songs in it. (well heck, I guess all Zeldas have, but WW had some special.. catchyness in its tunes.)

And Assassin's Creed 1 and 2. I love the music in both of them! I could listen to 'Ezio's Family' one from AC2 like million times, and still gets shivers from its epicness every single time. :D

oh, and Lair. Underrated game as it was, the soundtrack was just plain beautiful :)

Ok fair enough. But I'm not passing final judgement on that until I play the game all the way through. And Danny has done some great work outside of Burton films. Besides Batman I'm not actually impressed with any of his Burton scores. But that's only because Burton makes him compose in a certain way. He also did Spiderman which is excellent as well.

As for favourite film composer, that's gotta be Jerry Goldsmith hands down. John Williams is good but can get boring quickly. Goldsmith's work is always a treat for the ears. His scores from the Star Trek films (including theme songs for TNG and Voyager) for instance are quite memorable.

Original Spyro Soundtrack - Stewart Copeland (#2 was pretty good too)

stewart copeland is a genius, one of the best drummers of all time. I just bought his anthology CD which includes tracks from the original Spyro The Dragon.

That's not too bad. Quite a few of the well-known composers for Japanese games have gone freelance (Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda immediately come to mind).

Has anyone hear heard the music of Alexander Brandon? He did the soundtrack for Deus Ex.
  • edited December 2009
Metal Gear Solid (all of them) have excellent sountracks. Most of the Final Fantasys have fantastic music, but FFVII and FFIX are just outstanding. There's also Monkey Island (2 is the best) and Fate of Atlantis, not to mention the recent big hitters like Uncharted.

I wouldn't call having a collection of songs from well-known artists having a good soundtrack (GTA, Brutal Legend, FIFA), even if the songs are good. I'm much more easily impressed by original soundtracks, composed particularly for that game. I don't hear Ozzy's Diary of a Madman and then go "yeah, that game had a great soundtrack". That would just be dumb.

I would like to add Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. Even tho the game itself was pure crap IMO (they even consider it 'adventure' at some places), the music was the one redeeming aspect. Main Title Music

I've just been playing Braid again while I wait for ToMI Chapter 5 and I forgot how good the music is. I love it all.

Apparently Modern Warfare 2's soundtrack's composed by Hans Zimmer, the brilliant musician behind Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean, Crimson Tide and Kingdom of Heaven. This is the first bit of interesting news I've heard about that game.

The score sucks. I really didn't recognize Hans.
