    * Install ScummVM somewhere, like "D:\Games\ScummVM"
    * Get out your CoMI disks
    * Copy the COMI.LA0, COMI.LA1 and COMI.LA2 files (scattered throughout the root folders of both CDs) to some folder on your hard drive, like "D:\Games\ScummVM\CoMI" (but it actually needn't be anywhere near ScummVMs installation folder)
    * Copy the "Resource" folders off both CDs into the same folder
    * Run ScummVM.exe
    * Choose "Add Game"
    * Navigate the file chooser to "D:\Games\ScummVM\CoMI"
    * Click "Choose"
    * Tweak the ScummVM options dialogs to your liking
    * Click "Start"

    Easy, huh? :D

I'd much rather see a Special Edition of Grim Fandango, preferably done by Telltale, so I can actually PLAY IT!

Anyway, I would love to see a Special Edition of Curse, with the same backgrounds and animations done even better than before in modern Photoshop. As long as they add in the missing scenes and let you play the original version as well.

What do u mean by the "Original Version?"
  • edited March 2010
Presumably the switching back and forth from HD to SCUMM that the SOMI and LCR special editions have.

Other than ScummVM, try the CMI Setup utility. Should work fine on Windows 7.

I don't think Curse, Escape and Grim Fandango need remakes. They're perfect as they are
And they work fine on my Windows 7 PC. I just have an issue with Grim Fandango Hardware 3D Acceleration thing, it doesn't work with newer graphic cards :(

i think thats what i thought with Monkey Island 2, i still think it's perfect the way it is, but looking at special edition Lechuck does look pretty decent, although im still not keen on Guybrush,i feel theres something Odd about his head..maybe its due the different colour hair...but back on topic...i think Curse does look great visually, but i wouldnt mind them Shrinking Guybrush him less lanky...or redo him so he looks like the tales version :)
  • edited March 2010
Could happen, will depend on sales of LCR SE though.
  • edited March 2010
I say it would take too much work and effort for a waste-able increase in quality (on the graphics department).

As thus; no thanks, rather have them spend their time with new games (with TTG).

It wouldnt be TTG managing a COMI:SE. It would be Lucas Arts like all the other SE. so TTG would not be effected at all.
  • edited March 2010
Another thing to note. If there was a COMI: SE, there's no way LA could screw up the cover art. Even though I liked the previous ones and didn't care about Guybrush's hair.
  • edited March 2010
@ jhuddy: Yeah, I know. I was just commenting I am rather wanting them (LA) make new games on old franchises instead of SE'ing everything. And not do it themselves (no trust until I see a good result) but let TTG do it in their place.

Although I guess that does mean the SE team has to find something different to do.

oh alright. sorry i guess i didnt understand completely what you meant :)

Give you the option to play the older version as well, like with the other Special Editions. With just the press of a key.
  • edited March 2010
I would like it, but I would be just as happy if they did a re-release, just like the original but more compatible.

I would pre-order this right now. If they made a fake announcement and it had the look and feel of a Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme I would STILL pre-order it.

If they did update Curse the only thing that I really hope for is the ability to play it in mad resolution and I would love commentary from the creators. I really enjoy stuff like that.

What they should do is make Monkey Island Madness Special edition on disc and sell it - they can throw the first 3 monkey islands on it all the way updated and ship it out.. 1 dvd should hold all 3 anyway..
  • edited March 2010
it can actually all fit into one normal disc (not dvd) if they compress the audio with today's methods.

But why would we want to go backwards? Curse has brilliant audio quality that even outshines current audio in TellTale's Games! Why would you want to compress the hell out of it so it will fit on a CD? And even so, Curse would just about fit on a single CD if you cut the audio right down, I think the poster wanted the Special Editions of SOMI and MI2, which will cost a few GB's to!

Special edition may be the wrong wording.... Curse of Monkey Island remastered edition sounds about right.
  • edited March 2010
The word "special" doesn't convey any particular meaning in that case, so I think it could still be called that for consistency, even if they don't overhaul it as thoroughly as they did the first two.
  • edited March 2010
I'd like to echo all the "there's not much else to do to it other than make it wide-screen and remaster the colors or maybe add in those missing scenes" comments. Because out of all the Monkey Islands, it's withstood the test of time best. And I really don't want them to touch the art.

Although I did replay it a year ago and noticed it's a little more grainy than I remembered. I wish someone made an anti-alias mode for it or something.
  • edited March 2010
blown up and wide screen its a hot mess.... It could definitely benefit with a Hirez cleanup.

You can play Grim Fandango. You just need a new installer for it that will configure the game to run in newer OS's:

    http://quick.mixnmojo.com/more-google-code-releases

    OR

    http://code.google.com/p/grimfandangosetupandlauncher/

    ----

Also, CMI:SE... wth? what's to update? The resolution? Come on, it isn't THAT pixelated. I think CMI is wonderful the way it is.

It still runs with hiccups. Sometimes perfect, sometimes too fast, sometimes a tad slow. And sometimes it crashes.

If it was in widescreen they'd have to letterbox out the top and bottom of the picture, hiding a lot of the artwork.

Not to mention some of the hotspots one might need to, oh I don't know, complete the game...

At least Curse wouldn't require much effort to make a SE. A HD version on XBLA/PSN/PC would be lovely.

Grim Fandango deserves the same treatment. That game would work nicely with a controller.

Or they could add more artwork to the left and right!
  • edited March 2010
Current standard resolution is more than 4 times higher than what Curse's was, I think a high res version of the game with the original voices and soundtrack would be a great update.

SMI:SE was in widescreen... That wasn't letter boxed.

If you play the original Monkey Island, you can see that it's made in Widescreen too, this was done because of the verb box/inventory in the bottom half of the screen. The move to go widescreen wasn't a big step.
If you would try to make Curse in Widescreen, you'd have to crop the artwork, a crying shame if you ask me.

A lot of scenes had such huge panoramic views that widescreen wouldn't be too tough.

I made a crappy example with images I found on google quick:

    http://shodanfreeman.angelfire.com/cmipanoramaflat.jpg

PS: It's huge because I blew it up to be approximately 1050 pixels tall to emulate how it looks at a more current resolution.

I do not see why anyone would be opposed to this.... I would honestly pay full price for this in a heartbeat.

Yes, this would work with some of the backgrounds. But if my memory serves me well, most of the backgrounds in CMI are non-scrolling 4:3 images.

Me too! I'm against the cropping to widescreen though.

I don't know if it's most, but there are certainly a number of 4:3 backgrounds, which could just have a bit of extra art off to the sides, not too difficult of a fix really.

let's see it has voices already, I know it has cartoony graphics but how detailed can you make them until people stop noticing? I'm one of those people who really doesn't see a point in this. When Sierra remade King's Quest 1 and Space Quest, that was a well deserved upgrade because they were pretty bad in the graphics and parser department, Curse I really don't see a point cause I liked the controls and graphics.

If having 4x the resolution as well as widescreen support and better compatibility for $10 isn't worth it, I don't know what is.

Hell, I'd re-buy Curse with those benefits for that price.
  • edited March 2010
I'm not sure if the higher res or widescreen res would do it for me.
(I've still got a fullscreen monitor.)
I'd rebuy it if they re-inserted (and thus made) the lost cutscene and the song at the end.
    That'd do it for me.

CMI isn't in need of a special edition as much as the first two, but I guess if it comes with Dev Commentary and other fancy bonus stuff, why not.

If I had to pick, I'd take MI3a instead though, because this is probably the last chance to get that done :3

    Oh, definitely.

I would actually go ahead and call it Monkey Island 3, while letting everything Curse and beyond avoid a number. It makes sense to me.
