Comic Books?

edited April 2010 in General Chat
I was just curious how many Telltale gamers were also comic book fans.

I've been reading a lot of DC over the past couple of months, mostly thanks to their mega-event Blackest Night. I've enjoyed that a ton!

This could also be like... A general comics discussion thread if people like!

What about you?

I generally only read american comic books in one-shots, miniseries, and trade paperback collections. I very rarely buy new issues of a comic as they're coming out.

I read webcomics and graphic novels. And manga.

I tried to follow the Muppet Show Comic Books, but, living where I live... I'm waiting for a grand omnibus-like edition and order it from Amazon.

I mostly read manga. Now I read One Piece, Billy Bat, Bakuman and Nana-mix. I also had some Asterix albums. I tried to find Lucky Luke and Smurfs ones, but looks like Belgian comics aren't that popular in Chile. I also had some Chilean Comics (I won the first 5 numbers of the Caleuche Magazine in a comic contest :D), but the Comic industry here is undead now, mostly because the artists live in the past.

I also have 3 Webcomics in Spanish and I sent an entry to the Morning International Comic Competition, but I don't think I'll never win something. ;)

I'm a big Scott Pilgrim fan! It's epic!
Also I have finished Watchmen and added Kick Ass recently to my "done readin" list. I tried to read The Spirit, but it was kind of too random for me.
Don't know if manga fit into "comics" since in my world comics are kind of a western thing, but I do enjoy a lot of them.
When its about webcomics, I really love "Girl Genius" before it kind they kind of split up the comic and made an own spinoff with exact the same characters... or something (I didn't get it).

I've recently read: Spider-man Noir, Daredevil Noir, X-Men Noir and Wolverine Noir. All of which are pretty rad, I enjoyed Spidey and Daredevil the most. They are all wonderfully dark, as the Noir series would suggest.

I usually read non-DC or Marvel. Or from imprints like ABC and Vertigo. Stuff like Transmetropolitan, Bone, Fables, every ABC book especially League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Tick, Scott Pilgrim, Hellboy, Madman, etc.

I read japanese manga and some american comics

Besides Scott Pilgrim I love »The Life & Times Of Scrooge McDuck«. Don Rosa is brilliant!

The comics on my book shelf from left to right:
Scott Pilgrim vol. 5- vol. 1
Order of the Stick vol. 0 - vol. -1
    Watchmen

I keep Sam & Max Surfin' the Highway within reach of my desk in case I want to check something, otherwise it'd be to the left of Scott Pilgrim.

I shelve my comics in order of how serious they are, because I'm awesome.

I read a bunch of Asterix comics when I was fifteen, and I really enjoyed them. Maybe I should buy some.
  • edited March 2010
I've never really read many comic books, mainly just Tintin and Asterix when I was younger. Recently there's just Surfin' the Highway and the Southland Tales prequel saga.

Don Rosa's work is fantastic! :)
I'm also a big fan of Lewis Trondheim's Donjon series and Arleston's Sinbad

But as far as American comics go, I don't read a lot of them. I recently got into 'The Walking Dead' which is pretty cool...

I mostly like the newspaper-style comic strips, which tends to include quite a few good webcomics too.

When I was a kid I read some of the Cartoon Network comics. I never thought they were as good as the animated shows though, though some were pretty decent.

When I went to college I tried manga; haven't found a series I've really enjoyed yet though. Maybe I just don't like the style of it or something, or maybe I just haven't found the right series for me yet.

At some point during secondary school I also read a couple of two Asterix comics, which I liked. I could probably get back into them quickly if I start reading them again.

I discovered Bone through Telltale, which I've gotten into quite easily. So far I only have the 2 books I bought directly from Telltale, but I can see myself reading the whole series eventually. If I do enjoy it, I'm thinking of trying RASL.

Just be sure it's written by Goscinny, because the Uderzo only books are pretty bad...

I like the Futurama comics. :) I've also started reading the Bone books to finish the series now that it appears that I'll never get to see the ending through Telltale's games. :(

My kids brought home the Bone books from their schools library.

I own all the Bone series, as well as the Boondocks and Calvin and Hobbes. I also like Barney Google, Blondie, Opus, Garfield, Beetle Bailey, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Spiderman, Watchmen, Sam and Max etc.

I also love Hellboy, but I'm only familiar with the movies.

I read a lot of manga too, like Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Ghost in the Shell, Pluto, 20th Century Boys, Detective Conan, Yotsuba&!, Azumanga Daioh, Death Note, etc. as well as stuff by Tezuka.

I see comics as a genuine form of storytelling done in illustration instead of words. I just wish they weren't so expensive.

Seconded. Uderzo's a good artist, but after Goscinny's death the Asterix books just...
Well, the first few ones aren't too bad. I think he either had a few ideas of his own, or used some he had discussed with Goscinny.

But then he kept producing them and they were a bit worse every time. The last one I saw had aliens looking like Mickey and Superman and it was just... horrible. And it had a big message "Disney rocks and manga suck!" which was not subtle at all and made little sense (manga were inspired by Disney after all, it's not like they're fighting against each other or anything).

I read most of the X-men and Avengers titles, Fantastic 4, and all of Marvel's big events. I try to limit myself to only Marvel comics tho, since I've never been a big fan of any DC heroes, and I need some limitations to not just blow all my money on comics.

I think it's just Goscinny's work had a distintive feeling that Uderzo couldn't and can't replicate for some reason. The Uderzo's stories just felt diferent, and not for good.

They're not as bad as any of the animated Asterix films. The best one had Craig Charles (Lister from Red Dwarf) as Asterix, and it sucked pretty damn hard

I only read a couple of the Uderzo only Asterix books - Asterix and Son is the only one I can name - you're right, they're not as good as the older stories. As for the films, the only one I've seen is the first live action one (Asterix & Obelix vs. Caesar - just going with the English of the title for simplicity sake on my part!) and that was a very bad dubbing - but funny in a way because of that. Might see if I can get hold of a subtitled version.

Asterix's Twelve tasks is pretty good, and was made directly as a movie (not adapted from a book).
Also, The Daltons' Ballad was made just as a movie and not adapted from a (Lucky Luke) book.
Throwing it out there because it's also scripted by Goscinny (although he died before it came out).

Asterix & Cleopatra (animated) isn't bad either. I love the cake song.

I can't speak of dubs though, and the animated series I didn't like that much. (Not sure if you ever got the animated series).

I wasn't too impressed by that one. Much preferred the second one (Mission Cleopatra). I saw its English dub (out of curiosity) and thought it wasn't bad, although they cut out some of the movie for length. But they did it with jokes that didn't translate for the most part. The only part I'm disappointed they removed is when the main villain's lackey compliments the main villain on his "dress".
I liked that line. ("Nice dress". hehe)

From what I remember, even as a 7 year old I realised that the pacing of the dialogue was pure crap, plus it was pretty much inaudible (maybe the video I got from the library) The one that sticks out is... whatever one they go to Britain, I can't remember the name.

Anyway, basically I preffered the books
  • edited April 2010
Oh, yeah, the one in Britain. I wonder what it's like in English... In French it's hilarious because all the British people speak in English translated word for word. But there is no way they could do that in English, could they?
  • edited April 2010
From what I remember they speak very "properly" in the book and film, calling everyone "old chap" and all that. I still smile when I think of them clocking off at 5pm in the middle of a battle

I've got several rows of manga on my shelves, while it's basically "Surfin' The Highway" and several print versions of webcomics (Girls With Slingshots, Wapsi Square, Beaver & Steve, Laugh-Out-Loud Cats) as far as US and UK comics are concerned. And a full print collection of Gerhard Haderer's comic strip "Moff."... :D

I read Batman, Spiderman, and Moonknight, plus the alien and Predator comics.

On a regular basis, I'm reading Green Lantern, Booster Gold and Batman. I'm thinking of adding Thor and Iron Man when a good jumping on point arrives. I'm more of a DC reader since I'm not crazy about the direction of a lot of Marvel books, but some of their stuff is undeniably good from what I've read.

I love Les douze travaux d'Astérix (I refuse to call it by it's dutch title which just doesn't make sense.)
Actually I liked the first three Asterix films, mainly because I watched them as a kid, but les douze travaux d'Astérix is my favorite one.
The first three had a pretty good dutch dub, I didn't like the later ones, which is why I haven't watched them as much.
Love the cake song too btw.

I liked the first one. The second one had too many movie or present day references which were either not very original (the Darth Vader joke (aweful)) or just plain annoying (the woman who kept having a bad reception in her voice (even worse)). What I didn't like either was how they changed the character of Tekenis (at leas that's his dutch name, the egyptian architect) from a middle aged short ugly man to a handsome in his 20's french guy with a stutter. One other thing was, and I mean this in the nicest way, how they portrayed women in the movie, I am all for female rights and all that, but this was NOT as overly present in ANY of the Asterix books, NOR was it at that time.
In short I was completely taken away from everything that I loved about the Asterix comics, I mean Asterix was in a T-SHIRT for god's sake!

I too am very taken aback by the recent Uderzo comics. They just don't make sense AT ALL! He should just leave Asterix to rest or hire a good writer or something. The Latraviata didn't make sense at all, the one with the aliens was just aweful and the golden book wasn't even a story!
It doesn't help that the dutch translation is in the hands of a new publisher nowadays who decided to retranslate everything, and with that changing the names of several important characters, but even dumb things down quite a bit.
Poor Asterix, hasn't he suffered enough?

I read somewhere Uderzo was thinking about get a writer, and his daughter was opposed (In fact, she wants let Asterix rest in peace, far I read).

There's an animated series of Asterix? If actually were, to latinamerica came as different tv movies (Because I remember a ton of TV Movies, not an Animated Series). I watched it in HBO after they finish to show the Wallace and Gromit shorts already done at the time. Aww... childhood.

Well, Asterix was always full of current event jokes. It's just that some of the books being pretty old, the jokes seem to be about old stuff. I felt it was keeping perfectly in spirit by having the same kind of jokes there would have been if the story had been written then.
(She only had bad reception once. And I found it hilarious, everyone in the theatre thought someone had left their phone on lol. And the Vader joke I didn't find that bad either, although it was "expected" I'd say.)

Numérobis is his French name. Both the things you say seem to be about actors. Numérobis was played by a famous and popular actor in France. They did change the story so that he was the son of Panoramix (Getafix/ the druid)'s old friend, rather than being his old friend himself.
(Speaking of druid, in French they once make the joke of him saying "droid" instead, and in the English dub they make that joke lots of times, it got pretty annoying).
The two main females you might be thinking of I think were just there because they wanted the actresses in the movie, so they turned some characters from males to female or added minor female roles. But I'm a bit boggled about the "female rights" part. Apart from having more female characters in the movie, there is nothing about female rights.

You know, I can't find anything about a TV series. It must have been some of the movies they cut up and stuff, because I remember some recurring characters that were annoying and stuff like that. They must have added scenes or something. No wonder I didn't like it.
