Ep 1 graphics/framerate on Mac?

edited June 2010 in Game Support
Hi, I'm Chris and I downloaded episode 1 of season 3 today; my main computer that I played all previous telltale games on with an 8800 GTX card is currently out of commission, so I downloaded it on my new macbook pro (first time apple user) to give it a test run. However, it looks very aliasy (especially the shadows which have tons of zbias artifacts and jaggies) even at high resolutions and max settings, and it runs like a slideshow unless I crank everything all the way down so I'm looking at a postage stamp. This surprises me since it has an nvidia 9600m in here which according to some benchmarks I found show runs COD4 at around 60Hz and Doom3 at over 100Hz on this same model of computer, and offhand the visuals looked worse than previous telltale games because of all the aliasing. I assumed it would be drivers, which I assume are taken care of by the software update function on the task bar, and after running that the visuals sharpened up a fair bit but the performance on the street was actually even much worse. I'm new to using Mac OS, and I don't have a reference system available, so I'm not sure if it's drivers, user error, an OS issue, or if the hardware I've got on here just isn't fast enough to run the game at a decent detail level/framerate. Anyone else having similar issues?

Thanks,
Chris

PS: From what I've been able to play of the game, its excellent. :)

I'm having very slow framerates too here. My MacBook Pro is a bit older (Core 2 Duo 2,16 GHz, Radeon x1600 Mobile). I set the graphics quality to lowest settings (1). On the street it is reaaaally slow. I haven't played it much by now. At Stinky's Diner, the framerates seeom better, but also not perfect.

TOMI was fine with my hardware, though...

I'm also getting framerate problems. This is on an iMac, 10.6.3, RadeonHD2600. The framerate is so bad that it's pretty much unplayable. I've tried lowering the graphic quality setting to the minimum value, but that seemed to make very little difference.

Whereas, Tales of Monkey Island ran absolutely fine on the same hardware.

I tried it with Bootcamp with WinXP. It runs smoothly even with higher graphics details. So it seems to be less of an hardware problem than a problem with the MacOS version of the game engine...

Based on the fact no-one with a PC has had any frame rate issues, but 3 mac kids have

Hmm, the graphics quality setting seemed to make very little difference at first, but after trying various settings, and quitting and relaunching a few times during that, the lowest graphics quality setting is now giving me a reasonable framerate, even on the street scene. It still stutters a little at times, but it is at least playable now.

got a macbook pro (core 2 duo, 2,66 ghz, nvidia geforce 9600m gt). to run the game smoothly i had to change the resolution to 1280x800 and quality to 6. now everything seems to work fine, even the neighbourhood-screen (which was horribly lagging first). - and i had to switch between full screen and windowed (and back) to get it working, for some reason.

Strangely enough, I am able to play it without lag on my 2008 iMac (128MB HD2400XT) at level 4-5.

Correct, it's an OS problem, not a hardware problem. I've run the demo in both Leopard and Windows 7 on an early 2008 Macbook Pro, and there's almost no lag at all in Windows on the highest resolution and graphics quality, but in Leopard I have to use the bottom settings to play the game.

I'm having the same issue with TomI, all the walk cycles are funny and the game occasionally slows. Works fine in XP though. there are also a lot of noticeable glitches throughout the game, sounds the same in the new Sam and Max.

I get frame drops in some places with a 5850. 60 stable all the time, but there's just times when it dips to 50's for no reason.

I had the same problem but found a "solution"
My framerate is down everytime i start the game and after every video sequence.
but when I change to lowest resolution, and then back to max, it runs perfectely smooth (MacBook Pro 2008).

    I'm having the same problem.

Plays great under windows but is absolutely unplayable on the Mac, using the same hardware!

I would love to hear any suggestions from the folks at TTG. A little help here.

For people who are having slowdown problems, could you please post system specs, resolution, graphics quality, etc? The more information the better.

I'm having framerate issues with season 3 too, which is surprising since I can run all of TellTale's other games at maximum settings and still get 60 FPS+. S&M S3 is now officially the worst-running game on my PC. I'm using:
    CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core
    GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4600
    RAM: 6GB

I'm having the same problem, except with ToMI Ep 1. as I reported in this thread http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15582

My framerate is so low the game is basically unplayable. This is the first Telltale game I've tried to play on my new computer so I'm not sure if this happens with other TTG products. I do know I have similar framerate issues with AVP.

I'm running Windows 7, 8GB ram, 2.67 GHz Quad-Core, Radeon HD 4350. Changing the resolution and running in windowed mode seem to have no effect. I'll be really disappointed if I can't play games on my fancy new rig...
  • edited April 2010
I can run the game fine at level 6 and 1280x800, but increasing to level 8 and especially 9 are unplayable. Seems like as soon as anti-aliasing (and/or maybe some other feature I'm not noticing) is turned on, things go wonky.

    I have a 2008 17" Macbook Pro, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 3GB RAM and 256MB GeForce 8600M GT

Playing the same at level 9 on Windows is just fine.

Immediately after the intro credits the game slows down to a slideshow. The entire cutscene of Max finding the future vision toy and Skunk'ape's landing is like watching a still picture version. But once I walk into a building and come back out the game works fine and there's little other issue throughout the rest. Odd.
  • edited April 2010
As someone mentioned before, just lowering the resolution to something like 1024x768 and putting it back up again fixes the framerate problems. I've had to do this every time I start the game, but it's a minor problem and easily fixed if you do that.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if you can fix it before the intro sequence though, as the menu is unavailable at that point. I just had to sit through it with extreme lag.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else now. But lowering the resolution then raising it back up doesn't fix anything for me and the entire street scene is unplayable due to the slowness. I can play fine with a resolution of 1280x800 and the graphics level at 5 but the game is awful... On boot camp, with windows 7, i can play fine at native resolution (1440x900) and the top graphics setting.

My game runs fine on my iMac 27 i5, at max resolution (2560x1440) with quality set to 6. Yes, there is some lag on the street scene, but if I go down to 5 that disappears as well. I'm going to see if things are different on Windows though.

UPDATE: Ok, there definitely is something wrong with the Mac version. I installed and played the first bit of the game (up to the street scene) in Windows on the same hardware, at 2560x1440 with graphic quality set to 9 and everything is perfectly smooth, no lag whatsoever. The same settings on the Mac are definitely slower, and it's obvious that it's not an hardware problem as I just switched OS on the same computer...

    Hi,

I also am having problems playing the game... the cut scenes play ok.. but only if i have the quality setting on 4 - i'm playing at native resolution of 1400x900 and as soon as the game begins (the street scene after the intro) it's completely unplayable.

    specs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1

I had no problems playing the Mac version of monkey island at native resolution at full quality settings.

I hope this will be resolved soon I really want to play the game!!!

    Thanks,
    Ricky

Same issue here on my MacBook Pro. I was able to play TOMI on OS X just fine. I've verified that "Higher Performance" is selected in the Energy Saver control panel, so that it's using the GeForce 9600M GT rather than the GeForce 9400M. It slows down to roughly ~5 FPS as soon as the intro fades into the scene zooming out from Skunk'ape's eyes and S&M in the cage.

I'll echo the same problem... Unplayable framerates in OS X in any resolution, any quality, full screen or windowed.

I'll also add that I can play this on the same hardware in WinXP in VMware in an encrypted volume (which puts the CPU usage > 50% for any heavy reads and writes) and the game is playable - sometimes stuttery, but playable!

Again I've had no problems with ToMI or Sam and Max season 2 on Parallels Desktop.

I'm having these same issues with my Macbook. Even at lowest settings in lowest resolution, it lags. What's stranger is that things are fine in some areas of the game and downright unbearable in others (like the main street.) I wish i cold just cranks the settings down to 5 and be done with it but the frame rate constantly fluctuates.

From what else I read in this thread, something is definitely wrong with the Mac port. I really hope telltale is able to fix this.

I'm sure they're working on a patch to fix all the issues that have come up since the release, I doubt that they're simply ignoring the evidence... I do have to say that it doesn't seem that they have tested the Mac version of the game very thoroughly, though...

I've got a little work around which often does the trick.
I can't play above graphics level 6, but any resolution I want (my max is 1920x1200 on my 24" external, and my MBP is 2.4Ghz with the 8600M GT) is fine.

If I encounter this kind of stuttering, the worst places being the main street and outside Momma Bosco's, I switch to windowed mode, which usually gets rid of the stutter, and then I can switch back to full screen.
Often, it wouldn't affect me again during that play session, but if it did, switching in and out of windowed mode usually did the trick.

It's a work around, but does seem to imply that this should be a fairly simple bug to fix.
Won't help with graphics 7-9, though...
