Tip to UK based downloads- Switch to netherlands the UK servers are tripe.

You think that's bad? Mine has been suspended at 600MBs, lol

Just played 5 minutes of it.

The game is impressive and definitely worth owning. I'll probably be on later tonight for a good while after work. Can't believe this game is free.

Still downloading here. Just swapped to the belgium servers to see if that's any better. So far it doesn't look like it though.

I downloaded it pretty quickly despite the 10-15 minute suspension. The game looks great and is going to be a scary experience in terms of "jump factor." Especially when you have to pay attention to the movement indicator on the map in the lower right and to the screen at the same time. Those Alien things can come from anywhere.

It's going to be a great online game if everyone has a mic.

What's the controls like? That's the main thing I'm worrying about, not a fan of top down stuff if I'm honest.

You move with the standard ASDW and then you use the mouse to aim... it's pretty simple... E sends the "Tech" to fix doors and what not.

Oh, I'll get it as soon as the Steam servers unclog.

Must be something on your end - it just took me a whopping 8 minutes to download it; of course, it's also 2 in the morning here so I'm off to bed...

You live in Austria, probably less people downloading on that server. If you try downloading from any of the UK servers, for ages you couldn't even get the game to download when it was first released.

Eitherway, been playing it for the past 2hour or 3hours. Completed all of the campaign(There's only one campaign which contains quite a few 'missions'). Was quite fun. Not a big fan of the top down idea still, but it was better than I expected. The infestation can be a real bitch at times though, killing you outright if a medic doesn't get to you in time.

Don't ever try downloading ANYTHING on the UK steam servers, even if there's only a small amount of traffic. The UK servers are notoriously bad.
  • edited July 2010
Oh I know. I'm currently happily using the Ukraine servers. They've been giving me pretty good speeds.

I get a bit of lag whenever more than 2 aliens are on-screen. Other than that, the game's pretty good. I'd say there's definitely a learning curve, though. And unless you hook up a friend game, you have no idea who you're playing with until you've already joined; there are only generic server listings.

I don't like this game. At all. There's always something about a free not-browser based game that makes it instantly bad. Dissapointing, too: everyone wanted to try it so there was so much activity that I couldn't even start downloading about 3 days after release.

I haven't found it to be particularly jump-inducing. Has anyone else? It might just be because I've been playing FEAR concurrently, which generally holds spades in jumpiness.

does anyone know any of those set launch options codes that ends lag but lowers graphics. My game lags on offline and i hate to see what happens online and i really want to start online when i know offline works(so i can get me a parasite hat)
Also does anyone have said parasite hat yet i would love to see what it looks like for tf2.

I've seen the hat. It's horrible, and I think they just do that so people will actually consider Alien Swarm to get that hat.

Offline lag looks same online; I'm waiting for those launch options as well.

The hat looks like a boneless yellow starfish with additional arms. Yep.

I've been playing it quite a bit, gotten to level 27 on the third promotion too(Third promotion is the highest promotion you can get so far).

Nah, I don't think it's that jump inducing either. Although, mind you, I've become somewhat immune to the horror genre in general over the years.
  • edited July 2010
I'm very heavily phased by the Horror genre, and I'm not gettin' so much as a twitch.

Same with Portal and pretty much every other Valve games except half life

And L4D which was made by turtle rock but they were then bought by Valve. And CS:CZ is a Turtle Rock game too.
  • So Turtle Rock and the small team that made Alien Swarm worked on L4D together?

Also, why does Turtle Rock's website have a western theme?
  • edited July 2010
Because they orignal heads of Turtle Rock went back to Turtle Rock.
Also don't forget Turtle Rock made CS:CZ. And Gearbox made HL: OP and HL:BS

I'm pretty sure the game isn't meant to be jump inducing, it's just supposed to be you and some friends fighting hordes of things.

As for how short the game is, and the free hat thing, this is most likely just giving people new to Alien Swarm a taste of it. Somewhere down the line I'm sure that they'll make another one that you'll have to pay for. It's probably just a test, like the first Portal was.

Downloaded it a few days ago. I still haven't played it yet, but I'm hoping to get some people to play with me.

No, I think they're to add more campaigns later on after Portal 2, but I could be wrong.

Very possible. My roommate thinks they gave it to people to get them interested, then they'll release the true sequel Alien Swam: Infested. I haven't read anything though, so I have no clue.

Yeah a decent amount of people have been thinking that, either selling episodes or even a whole game.Giving a small part away for free then charging for subsequent releases, it worked for a decent amount of mods in the past.
