Streaming the LucasArts adventure library

edited January 2013 in General Chat
This is going to sound so stupid... Oh, hi there!

Do you have fond memories of your first plays through the old LucasArts adventure games? Do you wish you could relive those experiences? Well, here's your chance! Join me on Livestream as I experience the majority of the old LucasArts library for the first time! Offer me advice to help me advance! Offer me false advice to hinder me! Watch and see if you can pinpoint the exact moment the game breaks my spirit and I resort to a walkthrough! Or just sit back and re-experience the novelty of a first playthrough!

Now, things are a little crazy for me right now, so there's not going to be any sort of schedule for how I do this. I might let you guys know a day ahead, or a few hours ahead, or I might just post in here and tell you guys I'm going to start playing something.

I've already played through the Monkey Island games, Hit the Road, and Grim Fandango, so I'll be running through Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Loom, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and The Dig. As a bonus, I might also stream my first ever play of SBCG4AP Episode 5: 8-Bit is Enough. As an extra bonus, I might stream Hit the Road and Grim Fandango anyway, since Hit the Road confused the hell out of me and I haven't played Grim Fandango in a good long while.

I'll be broadcasting on my Livestream channel: http://livestream.com/guruguru214

So...anyone interested?

    Sure, I love watching Livestreams.
  • edited August 2010
Sounds like a great idea, I'd be up for watching.
  • edited August 2010
I'd like to watch it too

I would be kinda cool if each person streamed 1 or 2 games, but just you doing it is fine.
  • edited August 2010
I'd be fine with it if someone else wants to pick up the four Monkey Island games, Hit the Road, and Grim Fandango, just as long as they're playing them for the first time on the stream.

Anyway, I'm glad you guys like the idea. I probably won't have a chance to get going on Maniac Mansion until sometime on Tuesday, but I'll keep you guys posted.
  • Ooh! Ooh! I'll be watching! I'm not gonna get to play Zak McKracken, so it'll be awesome!

Hmmm, the only one of those I haven't played is Grim Fandango. I'll see if I can find a good price for it.

haha, watching someone play adventures games theyve never played before is always an extremely frustrating fun experience, :D

I really didn't mean to totally drop this the way I did. I'd still like to do this, and I've got a better idea on how I'd like to do it.

Previously, I haven't been able to use both my microphone and the game audio when broadcasting on Livestream. I know there's a way to do it in Vista or 7, but I can't do it in XP as far as I know. Well, I figured out a way to work around that using Skype, with the added effect that other people can join in the voice chat and comment as I play if they want.

Would you guys be interested in something like that?

Get this thing going already, man! Geeeeez. I think everybody should participate. Anyone who doesn't is a disgrace to humanity.
  • edited March 2011
Well, that's one hell of a bump.

I'm sort of considering doing it tomorrow evening. There hasn't been much interest since the resurrection, but I figure I can start it and if the people who were interested still are, it'll build up steam as I move through the library.

I might drop in for Maniac Mansion if I'm free when you do it. Especially if you play with characters other than Sid and Bernard (I played with them just a couple of weeks ago, and I'd really like to see the possibilities that arise with a different combination).
  • edited March 2011
That'd be awesome. From what I understand, Bernard is both practically necessary and pretty much canon, but I wouldn't mind trying someone other than Sid as the third character.

I'm thinking I'll do it at some point this afternoon or evening. Not sure when, but I'll try to give you guys some notice once I see how the day is going. Now, I'm gonna get some sleep so I can be at least half-conscious when I play.

I always picked Razor as a third character.
I'd love to learn about the different combinations when choosing different characters!

Yes to the latter, no to the former. If your argument for the presence of Bernard is his ability to fix stuff, the hidden skill of Jeff is that he can fix the phone so you can get past Edna (though you can also get past her while she's busy carting someone off to the dungeon). Fixing and using the radio (Bernard's other purpose) is only necessary for the Meteor Police ending(s).

As far as I know, the game is completable with any set of three. Bernard lets you summon the Meteor Police, Syd or Razor lets you get a recording contract for Green Tentacle (and nuke the hamster, so I guess one of them is the "canon" third), Michael develops the plans for Weird Ed, and Wendy edits The Meteor's memoirs. My personal favorite ending is from having Wendy edit the memoirs, having Bernard call the Meteor Police, and then showing The Meteor the publishing contract before the policeman arrives.

    I might enough this actually.

Well, I just got home and have a few things to take care of, but I think I could start up in about an hour if that's okay with you guys.
  • edited March 2011
Looks like I got online at the right time! AWWW YEAAAAAAAH.
  • edited March 2011
Sorry, running a little late. Give me some time to get my setup figured out and I'll try to get this going.
  • edited March 2011
Good news and bad news. The good news is that I seem to have my computers set up how I want them to run the stream. Bad news is it's time for dinner. I'm going to estimate another half hour or so before I get going. Sorry!
  • edited March 2011
Okay, I'm going to start up in a few minutes here! I'll be playing Maniac Mansion while Fawful and I commentate on it. If anyone's interested in getting in on the commentary, add me on Skype (you can guess the name, I'm sure) and I can add you to the voice call.

Well, I got off to a VERY rough start (both technical difficulties and gameplay), but it was a great night. Thanks to everyone who showed up. I had a great night and I hope you guys did too. Join me next time as I attempt Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders!

Also, this is my fourth consecutive post in a row in this thread. I know there's people interested, so would it kill you guys to post so it's not just me talking to myself?

Awww, sadface I missed Maniac Mansion!

I'm actually kinda bummed that I went out last night instead of watching Internet friends play a game... Nerdhood confirmed.
  • edited March 2011
You were missed! And even worse, you missed two plays of it. We realized very late in the game that I had made it unbeatable very early on in the game, and then I had made it even more unbeatable later on. So I started over. The second run was much more smooth than the first.
  • edited March 2011
So when are you going to play Zak McKracken already?
  • edited March 2011
Yeah, curse you! I'm just about ready to rally a "We Hate GuruGuru214" mob if you don't continue this soon!
  • edited March 2011
I'm thinking Monday again. Maybe Wednesday if something comes up. I'll try to keep you guys posted.
    "We Hate GuruGuru214" mob

Good, it'll be nice to have a convenient list of everyone I need to ban.

I'm annoyed that my Internet was busted when you did the Maniac Mansion playthrough so you can count me in for watching a Zak McKracken playthrough. I just hope that I'll be able to watch via my PS3.
  • edited March 2011
Tomorrow's looking good for Zak McKracken. Since I've got all the technical difficulties worked out (unless you guys want me to try and have my mic going), I should be able to get going much earlier. I'm thinking around 8 pm here, which will be 2 am GMT.
  • edited March 2011
Sounds good, I guess it's going to be another late night for me tomorrow.
  • edited March 2011
So...it's 8 pm and I just got back from dinner. Are you guys up for Zak McKracken?

I totally would have been, but your 8pm is my 2am, and I have to work to fund my extravagant lifestyle. The private jet and magnums of Krug aren't going to pay for themselves you know.

I'll have to see if I can swing next week's game for the afternoon so it'll be evening over there. Maybe this Friday, since we're not playing D&D this week? The last two have been a lot of fun and I'd love for you to be able to make one of these things.

So, Zak McKracken's done. I went into this project not wanting to use a walkthrough, and while I had to cheat a tiny bit at Maniac Mansion, I'd say I did pretty damn good.

Not so for Zak McKracken. I broke early and often. It was still a lot of fun, but playing a game like this with a guide and without a guide are two totally different experiences. With so many locations, a cost for moving between them, and the looming fear of an unbeatable game always present, I totally wussed out.

Yeah, I know, I'd never make it in a King's Quest game.

But I did have a lot of fun! Thanks again to everyone who came and watched! I'm thinking either Friday or next Monday for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. See you guys then!
  • edited March 2011
I totally think you should play King's Quest. They really aren't so bad, and AGDI has made their fan-made KQ games such that you don't get dead-ends, so I'd be up for you playing those (which also have better quality graphics and sound, plus are point-and-click.)

I've played the KQ games. I'm sure you wouldn't really be that stuck if you had us watching... though KQ5 is a bitch, really.

Plus, watching you die repeatedly could be highly entertaining for us all. :)

I'm lost. You already had the playthrough?! Gahhhhh! I thought it was 2am tonight. Please let us know when you're doing the next one and I'll be sure to make sure I have the right time and day.
