Alright, so the HD version of the classic 'Beyond Good & Evil' will be hitting the PlayStation Network as well as the Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow (March 2).

Screenshots were released a couple of months ago. The achievements guide was recently posted. And a trailer has been released, entitled "Traitor".

So, who's excited about this release, and who's thinking about buying it?

I saw that at GameStop a month ago and was about to pick it up because it looked cool. Not sure if it is though. I haven't played it. But I'm guessing if they're releasing it again in HD then it must be good.

Edit: I saw the used PS2 game at gamestop is what I mean. Didn't want anyone to get confused. lol

Embarrassed to say I have not played the original I have bought of GOG yet, I don't know what has been keeping me. But my MMO's was just too exciting to to stop playing, so I guess that has something to do with it.

But I might be able to get my brother into it, as we have a Playstation 3, we need to get it. :)

You're prettymuch correct there. It was a commercial failure because it was released at a really unfortunate time, and there wasn't really any major promotion for it. But the people who have played the game know just what a great game it actually is. So Ubisoft are giving a second shot with this release.

It's upsetting when a good game goes unnoticed. Sounds a bit like Mark of Kri. I don't think many played that game either even though it was cool.

If you haven't played this yet, then get this. It's great.

And if you have played this, and you own one of these two consoles, then buy it again. The sales from this release will probably determine whether or not we see a finished version of the sequel (which is currently in production).

Yeah, what a great game that was. And one of the only ones in which I enjoyed the dutch dubbing A LOT!
I wonder if they'll release the dutch dub with the HD version too...

^ This also gets me thinking about voice in general for the game. Because optional conversations aren't actually spoken; all that the player gets to see is text. Of course, there is nothing wrong with this - it's better in some ways - but I'm just wondering if they may have inserted voice-over into these conversations... Probably not, but it would be nice to think so.

I hope they won't change too much of the gameplay for the sequel.
There were rumors that the gameplay would be changed to "appeal to a broader audience."
Wouldn't want Ubisoft to pull a Telltale on us. ;)

Well, on this topic, the producer - Wang Xu - said: "It's like re-mastering a movie classic. You don't want to mess with the original; people love it as it is, and it is so special..." (source). So I guess there's no real concerns here ;).

And judging from the 10-minute gameplay preview (which I just saw), he meant that statement.

I don't believe they'll change the gameplay for the HD version, that'd be way to expansive for a re-release.
    I'm concerned about the sequel.
  • edited February 2011
Ah, the sequel - of course! Yes, you're right, that may be a minor concern. I mean, one of the best things about the original was the gameplay; it was near perfect. And, at times, it was actually intellectually stimulating. It had some puzzles (harder than those in 'BttF'), it had stealth, there was integral information that had to be discovered through conversation and dialogue: each of these gameplay elements actually required a degree of intelligence, thought and patience from the player. I'd hate to see this type of quality and depth leave the franchise in the second installment.

Oh man, why, oh why does my PS3 have to be broken?! I loved this game when it first came out (yes I was one of the decent people who actually supported it upon release).
  • edited February 2011
I've been eagerly awaiting this. Never played it back when it was new, but have heard nothing but good things in the intervening years.

Well I have the original and it was a great game. I may pick this up though to replay it.

"Beyond Good & Evil" is one of my absolute favourite games.

I'm interested in HD's new music (upload, anyone?) and the promised additional content (whatever that is). Apart from that, the HD version looks pretty much exactly like my seven-year old PC version. This is of course Ubisoft's test to see if there might be a casual gamer audience for this franchise today and must be seen more as a re-release than an actual "HD version".

Ubisoft is not an attractive company for PC gamers any more, with DLC not getting released for this platform and, most of all, an abomination of a copy protection system that absolutely MUST affect their sales for the sake of the future of PC gaming. Unfortunately, if it DOES affect their sales, they might think that they should ban the PC releases altogether.

The new cover is... hmmmmOK, I guess. All right, Jade doesn't look like Jade, Pey'J looks like his redesign from the early "BG&E2" teaser (that was 2008...). Also, I am really convinced that Jade's left arm is broken. Mr. artist, you will have to take another look at how radius and ulna work, because this thing is sub-par for a professional. ;)

The "traitor" trailer was a massive letdown. The most important aspect of the game is not even mentioned. Jade does fight with weapons against "the government", if that is how you want to put it. But quite essentially, she's a journalist, a photographer. She is investigating, she is collecting photographic evidence. That is, in fact, the game, it's what makes the game special, and the trailer doesn't bother to give us that crucial information!

    Marketing fail: Yet again.

She is raising and protecting orphan children in her lighthouse. She photographs animal species to earn money. Could they please tell us that??

Apart from these VERY VALID points of criticism, I suggest every next-gen-console owner who missed this when it came out, please play it now. Do it before it's too late, really. You might be disappointed by the game's length (seven to ten hours is pretty much the maximum you'll get out of it), but you'll be stunned by its gameplay versatility, its bold design choices, and of course Jade's subtle facial expression. Even today, her character intensity is unsurpassed. She's a legend, pretty much.

There is a reason why, besides only very few games like Monkey Island and Sam & Max, you'll even find fan art of her in my DeviantArt gallery.

Beh, Ubisoft should sell this license to Disney, at least they can do some more justice to it than Ubisoft ever can.

A Universe where Disney made wonderful adaptations. Sure they made their misses, but if you let that cloud their hits, you're just too negative.

Do I need to remind you that thanks to Disney's executive meddling Enchanted didn't end up being as cynical as it originally was.

Also, I seriously don't need to remind you about the fact that Ubisoft screwed us over with crap games like the Rabbids series and other bullshit. I mean, seriously, dance games?

Sure but as long as Michel Ancel is overseeing the project (which he is) ,I really don't see what it matters who publishes the game.

Did the animals do anything that would let you make Pornographic pictures?

I have the PC version and played with it a little got busy playing unreal tournament 2003 and 2004 and never touched it again since.

So I could already run the PC version at super high resolution above HD back then So I se no point of buying the game again unless they added new GPU effects or something but the PC already had it's own shader 2.0 effects and higher res textures back then. If they did it over again and it makes it look better I might.

Same with prince of persia HD it looks exactly like the old PC version at high res so I see no big deal.

SO i see no point of adding the words HD on everything especially games with PC versions since you could run the games at HD resolutions back when the came out years ago.

Serious sam HD they should have just called it something else since calling it HD is stupid HD is a resolution standard for Tv's the first PC game already ran at and the reason it is in HD is it has a new 3d engine called serious engine 3 and they are not using serious engine 1 that came out with the first game back in 2001 or when ever it was.

They need to stop with this HD thing it is dumb, the only games that should get a HD tag on it is games that ran under HD resolution or not in widescreen and there was nothing you could do about it like alien hominid HD is appropriate since that game enver really ran in HD before...everything else it just lame.

and god those lame HD sunglasses don't even make sense

What are these things going to do make me see more Pixels when I am looking at real life?

Oh then I will buy it then.

I will do the xbox 360 trial and look since I don't think the PS3 has one they almost never do I check no demos for most psn games.

Hmmm... I'm not convinced yet. First of all I don't have a Playstation 3 ór X-box, second I'd like to know what they plan to add or change. The original was perfect (if a bit short,) I wouldn't want to see it ruïned.

Judging from the cover art, it's another rush job. Which is technically good, because they won't get the chance to ruïn a great game with some pointless changes to "reach a broader audience."

@GaryCXJk: I would've loved to see a more cynical version of Enchanted! :)

Off-topic thoughts here: I don't. As much as I love cynicism as a plot device, it's quite frankly the opposite of what Enchanted was about. "Shrek" was about a fairytale land being deliciously dismantled by cynic and modern elements; "Enchanted" was about our cynic and modern world being deliciously dismantled by hopelessly romantic and fairytale elements.

I consider "Enchanted" to be Disney's answer to "Shrek", and this answer is, quite frankly, "Kiss our a**es". Shrek's musical number is hilariously stopped in its first stages. Initially, Enchanted mimics this ("Don't sing! People are watching!"), but inescapably develops into a wonderful monstrosity of a dancing scene in NY's central park, one that would have made Marry Poppins green with envy.

Enchanted had its flaws, really, but I can still deeply appreciate its concept.

The cover probably was a rush job, but in bigger studios, that sort of thing is generally handled by people quite unrelated to the game in question so I wouldn't think much of it. The demo will be a much more compelling indicator of the game's quality, so I look forward to checking that out.

Not sure how Disney came up in this conversation. They make some pretty great films, but their track record with video games is pretty... uneven, especially if we just look at them as a developer, and not at games developed by other companies based on Disney licenses. Also, while I would agree that Disney's adaptations often work out quite well, they're generally characterized by taking the general premise of something, and then making what are basically totally original characters to carry out roughly the same major plot points. I feel like if I were a big fan of a franchise where I was particularly attached to its specific characters and their personalities, I would find the prospect of a Disney adaptation somewhat distressing.

I mean I thought the Prince of Persia movie (probably the most relevant comparison, as that was literally a case of Ubisoft licensing a property to Disney) was actually pretty decent, but I'm only a passive fan of the games so I'm not that attached to it, and even I got the impression that the game and the movie had only the a few key elements in common. So I don't really see how the franchise would be in safer hands with Disney. I know Ubisoft made some pretty disappointing Prince of Persia sequels but it's not like any of those were dance games.

Also I just want to say that I found Enchanted to be a pretty charming movie. That world (both the fairytale world and the real world linked together) is one I'd love to see thrown into the Kingdom Hearts series at some point. That and the Muppets.
