Is Star Wars over rated?

I don't think the films are bad at all, I think they're great. I've enjoyed a couple of the games like KOTOR, Rogue Squadron and Battlefront. The universe is interesting but it gets taken too far. Every TV show has to have a Star Wars reference and the biggest fans always have the most serious arguments about characters and events that take some of the fun away.
The 'extended universe,' for the most part, is just too much and unnecessary.

If anyone wants to see just how obsessed people can become over their beloved trilogy then I recommend the film 'Fanboys', it's meant as a celebration of the fans but ultimately (and unintentionally) it becomes an relatively damning portrayal of just how blinkered some fans can become. See the sequence where the Star Wars nerds start a physical fight with some Star Trek fans. Yeah, how dare someone respect a genuine slice of Science Fiction and I'm not even a fan of Star Trek.

Star Wars is an acceptable form of entertainment but let's face facts; George Lucas has about as much talent as a braindead gopher. Everything that you and I love about Star Wars came from the talented artists who brought his vision to life. Star Wars would not be respected if it weren't for Gary Kurtz. Or is anyone foolish enough to believe that the franchise took a turn downwards for Return of the Jedi via complete coincidence?!

Ohhhhh, those Ewok's will make a fine toy. Money, money, money. Wake up people!

It's long been my opinion that George Lucas once created 6 great films (Star Wars and Indy) and has since spent the rest of his life desperately trying to destroy them.

Yes, Star Wars is over-rated. The first two films were great, but they were still flawed. The third one moreso, but it's still a fun film. But they were never the greatest works of art in the world, and the biggest reason they're so fondly remembered is because of how new they were.

As it stands today, the series isn't all that great. It's gotten better since the Prequel trilogy days (shudder), but it's not exactly amazing, and unless George Lucas steps away and lets someone else run the series, it's never going to get much better than this.

So yeah, over-rated. Still entertaining enough I guess, but it's never been the greatest show in the universe.

I'll say 5 great... Temple of Doom still bothers me, but Crusade is a masterpiece.
I'll say this right now. I'm not a big fan. I enjoyed TFU games, they were fun, but I'm too big a fan of continuity to get into the whole Star Wars universe...it's a tangled mess of contradiction. Star Wars and The Empire Strikes back(that's right. I'm using original titles, deal with it) were really good movies that I can watch at least once a year and thoroughly enjoy(Jedi; maybe every 2 or 3).

Yeah, I don't get the hate for Doom and I never will. It's actually starting to become my favorite of the Indy films.

I always like that one best for some reason. Maybe it was all the heart-ripping out...or maybe it was my most quoted line from any Indy film: "No thanks, I had bugs for lunch." (Useful for whenever my mom makes something a little peculiar for dinner)

it was just a weaker film....and the girl screaming for about 30+min combined really hurts it.

I think part of the reasoning is it's a much darker theme then the 30's serials upon which they are based, which puts a good amount of people off when compared to films like Raiders which is a relatively normal movie compared to Doom.

(I really need to rewatch The Last Crusade before I use my judgement, but right now it's Raiders>Last>Skull>Temple)

Yes, yes... more opportunity for Lucas to make more stupid, unnecessary changes and further milk the franchise for as much money as possible.

I bought the original trilogy special edition DVDs JUST for the bonus discs that had the original unaltered(even without the VHS alterations) movies.... and I will never give Lucas another dime.

The only problem I have with those is that they are letterboxed instead of anamorphic widescreen, which means that one has to zoom in on a 16:9/10 screen to view them properly and doing that makes them grainy.

Then I found Adywan's Star Wars fan edit, and all my problems were solved. Granted he hasn't finished Empire or Jedi yet, but when he does finish them, I doubt I'll watch Star Wars any other way.

I think one problem is people have made so much more out of the Star Wars movies than they were intended to be.

However, I do think George Lucas is overrated.

I want the blu rays. I mean seriously, why not. I think it's fun and exciting to get the blu rays and see what fans are whining about these days and to have conversations. I encourage you all to atleast some how watch the blu ray versions.

I will watch the Bluray versions, but there is no guarantee that I will buy them.

I do love Star Wars but George Lucas really keeps changing things to the OT, and is directly responsible for the PT being crap. I want the original version of the OT remastered in HD on Bluray, such that the video and sound quality are better but the original content of the movies remain intact and unchanged. Unfortunately, Lucas won't abide this ever happening.

I heard rumours that Lucas intends to insert new footage into Episode IV on Blu-ray. Apparently there'll be a scene of the senate being dissolved on Coruscant. Make of that what you will.

I always thought Temple of Doom was sorta boring. I think I've only watched it twice. I just lost interest with the plot.

Personally for Star Wars there's a couple of scenes from ANH that I've seen online that weren't put into the movie (but were in the book) I'd like to see put in. Especially the Luke and Biggs Scene on Tatooine. But knowing Lucas he'll milk it for all it's worth and change a few more scenes into "improvements".

The Blu-ray features have been announced...it will be the known "remasters" as well as deleted scenes....but the bastards didnt say if they are scenes from all 6 or just the prequels which have previously released deleted scenes.... but they did say there will be no more screwing with the movies. Kind of like if Lucas cut off 4 of your toes and left the little one....you know what they say about small victories

Do you know the suckiest thing? The "Making Of" from the DVD release won't even be included!

I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan. I'm debating whether or not I should write a big essay-like post about it.

Or, I could make it easy on myself:

no its not overated why would u say that

    You totally should.

"over rated" is pretty subjective too...I mean, when I hear people at work mentioning why the original trilogy are great movies and bringing up little details, would I consider that over rated? No, I enjoyed them immensely as a child and still do. When I look at the guy writing his 76th Star Wars fanfic, arguing on a forum about what a certain character theoretically would or would not do, while wearing Yoda ears? Then, oh yeah..... I think it has gone wayyy too far.

Star wars has become really stupid now, they make lego sets which are not based on anything also george lucas keeps milking the star wars franchise and like someone said before every tv program has to have some sort of refrence to star wars or they die if you want a example watch the big bang theory... the whole tv program is built up of refrences.

Also the clone wars animated tv program... really? I mean really?

Star wars is no longer great like it was when it first came out it's now just a pile of mixed ideas all mashed up together.

...since when WASN'T Star Wars a pile of mixed ideas all smashed up together? The whole core of the franchise requires taking at least two entirely different types of film and tossing them into a blender! We have a mix of Kurosawa samurai films, 1950s sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon, spaghetti westerns, arthurian high fantasy, World War II fighter pilot films like The Dam Busters, and countless other minor cinematic influences that give Star Wars its extremely unique aesthetic.

They're all good movies. Some are just better than others.

You could only be right as Star Wars came after all these things it had to of been inspired by these things, Lucas is a film student, if you would, he likes to do that sort of thing. So I'd imagine you're dead on.

I'm confused by your reply. The influences behind Star Wars are well documented. In books as well as on video.

    Examples: 1, 2, 3

I was agreeing with Dashing, are you not? Doesn't matter, most people never know what I'm saying.

As films, I think they're definately overrated, especially when compared with what's available today. However, their cultural significance is not to be scoffed at. Plus pretending that stilts are lightsabres during lunch breaks at primary school was crazy fun. Until they were confiscated ¬_¬

And then we imitated majora's mask for a few weeks, and all was well.
