Wii U (formerly Project Café)

edited June 2011 in General Chat
I'm sure we've all read the rumours about Nintendo's Project Café by now. There are rumblings that Nintendo want to recapture the hardcore market.

What do you think? Is this exactly the direction they need to take or are people skeptical?

See what i'm thinking is that the controller's gonna be more conventional, but what about the motion controls? To take them away is to say that they were a failure. maybe something Kinect-esque is in the making.

I'm a bit of a Nintendo fanboy so I can't wait to see what they've come up with. For all the hate they get at least they try to keep things fresh

I dont see why they don't just inculde a wiimote style controller in the box as well as this fancy ipad controller. Ps3 and xbox give developers the option of using motion control or not. I know the classic controller for Wii did this but not everyone has them so It wasnt supported. Surely nintendo wont be ditching motion control, just doing something similar to sony and microsoft

I'm genuinely intrigued. Hopefully Nintendo gets it right this generation.

One thing you can say about Nintendo is that they are pioneers.. they are not afraid to take SOME risks... on top of that they own some really beloved intellectual properties. I would LOVE for Nintendo to be my favorite console again.... Having been a kid in the 80's and 90's Nintendo and their characters almost seem like family.

I'm not even sure if this is going to be a Wii 2.

For all we know, Nintendo could be splitting their console lines in two!
Wii 2 for the casuals (eventually)
    Project Cafe for the "hardcore"

(A pipe-dream I know, but who knows what could happen!!)

I mean the Wii got a lot of bad rep for not having many great "core" games on it, (I personally agree with that. In my experience I gave up on the wii a few years ago (this is from the guy who stubbornly stuck with the Dreamcast!!). I was almost drawn back by Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns, but the 360 still keeps me hooked in!

The "Wii" was meant to be universal, but in reality people really do want different things out of a console. I grew bored of the gimmick controls, and then got annoyed at how restricted they really were once mastered.

The lack of hard-drive and the poor online store really killed it for me.
(I mean in a 360 retail glut, I can at least use the Arcade store. There was nothing to help me cross the Wii's abyss)

    Also Wii Music.
Once that came out, I knew it was game over....

I was so excited when I first got the wii. I really thought it was grand. Now I just don't use it anymore. At all. I have about 8 games for it and only 2 use the motion controls. I wish I had never bought it. (Except that would mean I'd have never played Okami and consequently would probaby never got Okamiden). I'm only holding onto it now in the hopes that the wii2 (or whatever it is) is going to appeal more so I can trade in and swap. If it doesn't then I guess I'll end up getting a 3DS. Either way Nintendo isn't really going to loose me.

I think my main problem with the wii is the party games. I have no one willing to play with me, which kind of defeats the object. So I'm forced to play single player games and there just aren't that many good ones out there for the wii. :(

Yeah, and even when you do get people, there is no garuntee you're going to have any fun either.

Typical Mario Party 8 game with family.

-First few turns, everything is going well

-Half way through dad start accusing everyone of cheating

-Soon after everyone begins mocking and heckling each other

    -Someone goes too far.

-Game plays with more awkwardess and shouting (as dad is still accusing everyone of cheating) till the end, or someone leaves and the session ends abruptly

(THANK GOD WE NEVER PLAYED DOKAPON KINGDOM!!!)

After the Wii, the possibility of the name Stream frightens me.

It's too close to Steam. That'll never fly.

    See what I did there?

Cafe will be for hardcore gamers?

They've apparently got Rockstar working on GTA V as a launch title, so, hopefully.

The rumours spreading around are that Nintendo want to recapture that market. The news hasn't been confirmed by The Big N but multiple industry insiders are all saying the same things. The big question is are Nintendo only going after the hardcore market or are they going to try and please both hardcore and casual alike? We'll likely find out at E3.

I have more games for the Wii than any other system. My XBOX 360 is birckhousing it with dust and PS3 is mainly a Bluray player.

You must like kiddie games with cute bouncy friendly bug-eyed characters.

I'll read you what I have.

    Mario Galaxy.
    Mario Galaxy 2.
    Zelda Twilight Princes.
    Cursed Mountain.
    Sonic Colors.
    Donkey Kong Country Returns.
    A Boy and his Blob.
    Punch Out.
    Sonic Rings.
    Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
    Endless Ocean.
    Super Mario Brothers Wii.
    Metroid Other M.
    Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition.
    No More Heroes.
    House of the Dead 2/3.
    House of the Dead Overkill.
    Madworld.
    Dead Space Extraction.

For XBox 360 I have Halo 3 and ODST.
For PS3 I have Ghostbusters, Heavy Rain, Resident Evil Solid 5, Metal Gear Solid 4.

There's really not much that comes out on PS3/XBox 360 that I've wanted that I couldn't get on PC.

Individual Telltale episodes are listed separately on my checklist, which greatly skews the number under "PC".

    Animal Crossing: City Folk
    Cabela’s Big Game Hunter
    Call of Duty 3
    Epic Mickey
    Excite Truck
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
    Guitar Hero: World Tour
    Guitar Hero: Smash Hits
    Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    Link’s Crossbow Training
    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
    Metroid Prime: Trilogy
    Metroid: Other M
    Red Steel
    Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
    Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
    Resident Evil 4
    Rock Band 2
    Rock Band 3
    The Beatles: Rock Band
    Sonic and the Secret Rings
    Sonic Unleashed
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Super Paper Mario
    Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    Wii Fit
    Wii Fit Plus
    Wii Play
    Wii Sports

It's not a great list. There's games in there that I dislike (at least two of which are my dad's), there's games in there that were better on PS360, and there's a few that are just plain mediocre. And honestly, there's very few games outside this list that I would even want for the Wii. But there's also games in there that I love, games that wouldn't have been possible on another console before the Move was released.

So would I call the Wii a mistake? No. I'd call it mishandled, partially because the Wiimote, while amazing when implemented correctly, is highly exploitable as a gimmick, partially because developers don't care for the system because "graphics are everything" and a bit because of the lack of HDD, and partially because Nintendo has its head up its ass when it comes to having any idea what makes an online system work. But beneath all that, the console has so much potential. I've seen that potential realized to an amazing degree on a few occasions. If Project Cafe turns out to be more than a rumor, I hope that it can retain that same potential while eliminating some of the problems that kept the Wii from realizing it.

Wow how did I forget to mention Brawl? Red Steel I gave to my friend, and dammit I need Epic Mickey.

A while back, I meticulously catalogued my video game collection, which is something I don't think I'm ashamed of nearly enough.

I notice a 32X list there. I'd venture to say one of those is Knuckles Chaotix :D
  • edited April 2011
I wish. It's the three games that my friend gave me when he gave me the thing (without the short AV cable that connects the 32X to the Genesis, which I only finally acquired about a year ago). My 32X games are Space Harrier, Virtua Racing Deluxe, and Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000. Two of them suck, and I've played enough of the original Virtua Racing to never want to play it again.
  • edited April 2011
Haha. Dang. I'm sure my copy of Chaotix is around here somewhere XD

While revealing nothing new, Nintendo have confirmed their next console for a 2012 release.
  • edited April 2011
Nintendo's shareholder meeting is tonight/tomorrow morning, so we'll probably hear a bit more there. Sort of how we new the 3DS would be 3D before E3.

Seeing how this is the Telltale forums and all, there's a question that should probably be asked: Do you think Project Cafe will help Telltale as a console developer?

WiiWare is a horribly restrictive service thanks to the 40 MB size limit, and Telltale's attempts to release games on the Wii have ended poorly because of it. Maybe things will get better here?
  • edited April 2011
Maybe Telltale shouldn't make their games as Wii Ware or at lest, produce a different version of their products tailored for it.
  • edited April 2011
Yes, I'm sure Nintendo has learned their lesson about downloadable games.

Nintendo are terrible at the whole Web 2.0 thing, they're promising big things with the 3DS so these'll naturally transfer over to there next gen system moreso.

Unless they're just bigging themselves up, but Reggie wouldn't lie to us. Would he? :(

I'm looking forward to what Nintendo has to offer. The 3DS hasn't thrilled me yet but I think that's mostly from a lack of games. I'm going to wait for the new version of it to come out (no proof of one, just going on Nintendo's history.) I still play my DSlite plenty as is.

I hope the Café will have some unique surprises. I've become a PC gamer and only play Wii for the first party and unique titles. ...I might be part of the reason Nintendo has third party issues.
