Movies you have to watch at least once

edited July 2011 in General Chat
Okay so this is sort of similar to threads that have already existed, so if you want mods, you can shut it down.

However, I still think another movie thread isn't such a bad idea, when this one is less about straight reviews, and more about recommendations.

So has there ever been a movie that you have watched and enjoyed it so much that you have to make sure everyone you know has seen it?

I definately have.

So heres a few movies that I feel everyone has to give a go:

1. Kung Pow: Enter the Fist

KungPowEntertheFist20027756_f.jpg

I don't see how this movie got such bad reviews. It really is a great film.

Not only is it a parody of badly dubbed martial art movies, its also a bit of a self parody too.

Its weird, its wacky, and its just plain fun!

Watch it with some fun friends and you will have a great laugh.
(Booze is helpful here too!)

2. Shutter Island

Shutter+Island.jpg

This was a suprise film for me. I was expecting it to be bad.
It didn't look all too interesting at first, pretty generic actually.
But once the film starts gaining momentum, its actually pretty gripping and at parts very intelligent.

3. Austin Powers (All of them)

Who hasn't seen Austin Powers?

The first two are classics, and the third one, though a little underdone compared to the first two, actually does have enough fresh material to stand by itself.

The films definately should be watched together though, the films are just full of in-jokes.

4. Shrek

None of the sequels, just the first one really.
I've seen all of these films, and though the others are not the worst movies in the world, (just pretty unecessary really...) the original is just a lot better.

Original idea, good cast, great execution.

5. Kung Fu Panda 2

I like Kung Fu Panda, its a great film.
Though I am fairly biased because I love Jack Black in most of the stuff he does, (some people tend to hate him) you have to admit he's a good fit in this film, in fact all of the cast were.

Kung Fu Panda 2, doesn't suffer from Dreamworks usual curse of making a good movie, and then making terrible sequels, and you can easily see that the people behind this movie cared quite a bit about it, and put a lot of effort in, (its a shame the videogames never get the same treatment eh?).

It didn't go the cheap route, and just make it a souless forced comedy affair, in fact the movie didn't have many jokes in it at all and was actually suprisingly dark at points (acting more of a homage to the old kung fu movies rather than a straight parody the first one was).

Its not for everyone, I'll admit, but if you liked the first movie, you probably would enjoy this one as well.

6. The Shining

I'm not normally a horror fan, but this film is just a perfect example of how to do a horror film right.

Jack Nicholson was the PERFECT lead.
A fantastic actor that just slides into the role with no effort at all, (maybe he was playing himself! XD).

7. Scary Movie 2

The best of the series in my opinion, and if you have to watch one, just watch this one.

8. Drag me to Hell

I don't understand why people hate this movie.

People seem to expect too much from it, I guess, or they just misinterprit it.

As a horror film, its terrible, its not very scary at all, but in all honesty, this is Sam Raimi we are talking about here, its not supposed to be pure horror.

Its more funny and gross if anything, and thats sort of the point of it.
Its basically a more mainstream, modernised version of the Evil Dead films.

It does have some clever scenes, and it does shock you here and there, but its really a sort of film you just sit there, and enjoy.
The best horror films are the ones where you can sit there and mock the stupidity of the protagonist from the safety of the fourth wall.
This film has that, but it also adds some extra dark comedy to give it that extra spice.

Its not a film you can watch again and again, but its a good film to watch with friends (or family, as I did with my mom, the twisted woman was pretty much howling with laughter all the way through).

9. Rocky Horror Picture Show

Best Goddamn Musical of all time!!
Go see it! Now!
Tim Curry love here. <3

10. Reefer Madness (the musical)

Another excellent musical and my third favourite (second is Spamalot BTW, and the fact that this is not on DVD yet depresses me (because if it was, I'd have all 3 playing every friday or something. In a row! YEAH!!!)).

I think describing it would be spoiling it, so just hunt it down people!

I got more, but this should do for now! :D

    No particular order here

    1. Rose Red

Without a doubt my favorite horror flick of all time, I watch it at least once a year, it is without a doubt one of the greatest things to ever come from stephen king

    2. Pan's labyrinth

close second, beautifully imagined movie, Gulliermo Del Toro's best work

    3. A Tale of Two Sisters

It's a Korean horror flick, the only horror flick I have ever seen that ever truly surprised me with a truly phenominal twist ending...

    4. Alice in wonderland 1985

Truly the difinitive alice movie, an amazing all-star cast, catchy music, and wonderfully realized wonderland

    5. serial mom

in my opinion john waters only good film, What's better then kathleen turner playing a psycho housewife/serial killer... I will always laugh at the over the top sex scene, and the harassing phone calls lolol

    6. Hairspray

The musical, definatly not the john waters tripe, it's not the fluff movie that everyone thinks it is, it is truly a deep movie about racial integration in the 60's, great cast, great music, amazing choreography, and you get to see john travolta in drag =P

    7. Arsenic and old lace

Murder, Madness, mayhem, it's all there... the funniest movie about old lady serial killers ever!!

    8. Auntie Mame

The Rosalind Russel movie, not the horrendous lucille ball musical... It's a halarious movie about a flighty woman who has to take care of her nephiew, very high energy, so high energy that you will literally remember it as a music when there isn't a song sung throughout the entire movie

    9. Fantasia/Fantasia 2000

Greatest disney movies ever released, they began my love affair with Rhapsody in blue" and truly shaped my life

Side note: If you havn't seen the short "destino" go check it out NOW it was a short created by walt disney and salvadore dali, made me weep openly the first time I watched it, it is included on the fantasia/fantasia 2000 blueray

    10. Bedknobs and Broomsticks

If you havn't seen this you NEED to see it, it came out about the time of mary poppins and was completly overshadowed... It stars angela landsbury as an aspiring witch, the original theatrical version however was horrible, they cut roughly 30-45 minutes from the movie including almost an entire plot concerning the local minister (roddy mcdowell) and some scenes that without them, the movie made no sense...

They recently released an "enchanted musical edition" this edition includes all the missing material, minus the song "a step in the right direction which has been reconstructed from still's and added to the bonus features...

unfortunatly some of the voicework couldn't be recovered so there are some scenes that have been (badly) dubbed but the full movie is much better, and makes more sense when viewed in its entirety

    -1. The wizard of oz

My last movie is NOT a recommendation, however it has shaped my life more then any movie on this list... it is truly the worst movie ever made, anytime i think about this movie i get truly furious... I won't go into a rant, but it's like they took the book, ripped it up, shuffled it, took half the pages and made them into the film, took the other half and burned them... truly a horrible movie... truly truly a horrible movie, and the ending truly spits in the fact of the viewer if they have any knowledge of the books, in the books oz is a REALY PLACE, in the movie it is unfortunatly a dream, truly, TRULY infuriates me...

Ooh, this one is going to take some very careful consideration, especially since I don't own some of the movies I'd like to list, so I don't have a ready reminder.

Oh, so we're on that again? Seeing as I'm apparently the guy who absorbs media of any form just because you tell me to, I for one would be very interested to see what movies you define as "must-see".

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
    Hot Fuzz.
    Shaun Of The Dead
    Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
    Iron Giant.

Way too much thought required to make a list (I HATE thinking!), so I'll just recommend Tetsuo: The Iron Man and Eraserhead.

You're being ridiculous again. Of course people care. Maybe not the entire internet, but the day the entire internet agrees on something is the day the world ends.

but the day the entire internet agrees on something is the day the world ends.

The entire internet agrees that the internet is a thing worth spending time on.

Certain parts may deny it, but then they wouldn't be on the internet... unless they're masochists... but then, they deem the internet a worthy torture... so they... do agree?

    HA! (I think)

    Fight Club.
    Se7en
Silence of the Lambs (Followed by Hannibal and Red Dragon)

Can't really remember anymore right now.

Apparently nobody mentioned Pulp Fiction yet.

Most movies I'd recommend seeing at least once have already been mentioned, so I'll just add:

    Transporter 1
    Crank 1

I agree. I love the character designs, and how none of the robots have human faces (mostly, they're just two eyes), and only barely human bodies, and yet they can show lots of personalities.

    I especially like this guy:
    WALL-E-Character-TYP-E.jpg

When I saw him the first time, I was like "That's awesome!" His 'face' is just one big red eye, but the way he moves, and how the eye relates to his little hands make him look like a hunched, stressed office worker.
  • edited June 2011
That was awesome! He was so amused when he learned to wave. Pixar are very good at making something that by all means should have no life at all and then fill it with personality simply through movement.
  • edited June 2011
I agree that Wall-E is a great film.
    One of Pixar's best.

Also Toy Story 1 and 3 (2 I don't seem to like as much) are fantastic films, timeless classics.

In fact comparing the two just shows how much the company has matured over the years.

Best Pixar film for me has to be Up.
    It truely is a wonder.

One could argue its more of an experience than a film.

The visuals are some of the best I have ever seen. Fantastic effects combined with excellent design.

    The musical score is superb.

The characters are unique and likeable.

Even the plot , though fairly simplistic, is well told.

Also here are another few recomendations:

    kung_fu_hustle.jpg

Hilarious but also brilliantly coreographed kung fu film.

    Self-parody at its finest.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyWhVUCXY1A

    Bruce Campbell movies

Evil Dead 1-3, Bubba hotep ect.

Bruce Campbell is excellent, and I suggest giving all the movies he has stared in a shot.

Watch the old stuff first, become aquanted with him, then watch this:

    My Name is Bruce

    MV5BMTQxMDg2Nzk2Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDg4NjI5MQ@@._V1._SY317_.jpg

    This is a hilarious film.

Its another self parody, and it shows just how likeable and down-to-earth Bruce Campbell is.

Everyone did a pretty good job covering classic movies. I'll just add a few more:

    -Rashômon (1950)
The birth of 'different POV' movies. It is, however, a foreign film so you will need subtitles but it's truly a masterpiece that must be viewed for any cinema lover.

-The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
I don't know how to describe this movie other than 'classic'. It's probably one of the more well-known Western movies and yet, I don't know too many people that have actually sat down an watched it.

-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Jack Nicholson does an amazing job as the lead and really ties the movie together. Again, this is one of those classics that you must see at some point.

    -A Clockwork Orange (1971)
In my opinion, the best movie by Stanley Kubrick. The entire movie feels like a case study of the main character and man, is it facinating. Malcolm McDowell does a beautiful job of portraying Alex DeLarge. As a warning, this movie holds many "controversial and disturbing" scenes; it really depends on what sort of film goer you are.

    -Inception (2010)
Yeah, yeah. I know I'm going to get a few flames for this one but I loved it. The concept, the actors, the story; everything was well done. I don't remember walking out of a movie theatre with such a strong liking for the film.

    -Psycho (1960)
Not the Vince Vaughn remake. I'm sure most of you have heard of the twist ending at some point but despite the fact, I highly recommend the film. Overlooking the most memorable scene in the film (you all know which one), this movie manages to keep the viewer interested all the way until the end credits.

I'm sorry if anyone already posted these movies. I'm not very observant.

Also, there's a brilliant animated short that adds visuals to Tim Minchin's 9 minute poem, Storm. I highly recommend it for at least one viewing.

Saw some really good suggestions here, hope I don't repeat any. Also, trying to get those out there that less people know about, some at least. Concerning Kung Fu movies, well, I've got Operation Condor on my shelf and that's all the Kung Fu I'll ever need. :D :D

    Groundhog Day
One of the greatest movies of all time, and every science fiction series above three seasons seems to have at least one memorial episode reminiscent of the mechanics of that movie.

    Accidental Hero
Best Dustin Hoffman movie out there, but few even know it! Watch it and try to find your hero. It's really hard. ;)

    Memento
Why hasn't anyone named this movie? A thriller in which the scenes are shown in reverse order and STILL the resolution is at the end. Shocking, and you really get to feel pity for the main character.
