Final Fantasy VII

edited August 2011 in General Chat
Somebody I know told me that Cloud's girlfriend was Aerith, although I doubt that. Does anyone know who it is? I dont want to start any trouble. I'm not a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, but can somebody answer this for me?

Edit: I should have been more clearer, I didnt sound like I was. I should have asked who is clouds girlfriend.

I'm not sure he's explicitly with anyone, though the closest is probably Tifa.

I always assumed he was single. He looked too depressed to be with somebody.

Cloud and Aeris (do NOT correct my spelling) were clearly interested in each other, but unfortunately she died before anything could happen. Cloud and Tifa, on the other hand, were childhood friends and it's sort-of hinted that they may, at some point, hook up after the games/film, though it's never explicitly said.

So Aeris was never Cloud's girlfriend, though she might have been if she hadn't died. If you want more info on the history of all this, then here we go...

Cloud is basically a nobody. He leave Nibelheim full of dreams of becoming a big-time SOLDIER, but ultimately ends up as one of the nameless grunts that make up the Shinra army. However, there's a guy named Zack who IS a SOLDIER, and the two become friends. Zack also dates Aeris at some point.

After Cloud and Zack return to Nibelheim and Sephiroth goes bat-shit insane, the two escape with Zack badly injured. The two almost make it to Midgard before Zack dies, and Cloud, who's suffering an identity crisis, basically takes on Zack's life. Eventually he bumps into Aeris, and she's drawn to him because he reminds her of Zack, though she kind of learns to like Cloud for who he is as well.

Then Cloud goes bananas, Sephiroth proclaims he's a god and Aeris gets a sword through the chest. So much for that romance. It's shown, however, that as she becomes one with the Lifeforce, she reunites with Zack and they're happy ever after. Despite being dead. Go figure.

I think I've got that fairly accurate, though I'm sure someone will correct me. It's been a while since I played the game, watched the move and read the short stories.

    Got it, spelling is off-limits.
So Aeris was never Cloud's boyfriend, though she might have been if she hadn't died.
    What.

If Aeris hadn't died, there's a chance that she and Cloud might have ended up as Boyfriend and Girlfriend. Not that hard a concept to understand.
  • edited August 2011
I don't know though...that would make Aeris(th) like that chick from legends of the fall.

In FF7, you have the option of which person you would like Cloud to pursue a relationship with (Aeris/Aerith or Tifa). At the Golden Saucer, you go on a date with the girl you chose and do such things as ride the ferris wheel. There may be further interactions which vary depending on which girl you choose, but the initial visit to the Golden Saucer is the one place that comes to my mind at present.

For anyone confused about the names Aerith vs. Aeris: Aeris is the name given in the english releases of the game. My wife says that her brother's copy of FF7 called her Aerith, but also that he had the PC version. Whether this is accurate or not I have yet to verify.

    A) Who you go out with at the Gold Saucer is not a direct player choice. The game memorizes with whom you've been most friendly with and that's the person to surprise you with a date at the Gold Saucer. I've heard it could even be Yuffie or Barret, but that might just be a cruel internet rumor. :D

    B) The Aerith-Aeris discussion is pretty futile. Japanese does not have the "th" sound, so the English translation from the Japanese letters used an "s"; however, I think I've seen Tetsuya Nomura's original character design with the European letters "Aerith". So it's rather unclear what was "intended", and if there is a "correct" spelling. Funny story: The German version - one of the most horrible translations in the history of gaming - was obviously translated from the US version (!) and used "Aeris". I immediately changed it to "Aerith" back in 1997. So there you have it. :D

Update: I was speaking about this character design thingy. At least I can confirm that it already existed in 1997. ;)

You can go on a date with Barret as well, and I don't think Cloud could be considered gay. Cloud is single all throughout the game, and I don't think he's ever even had a girlfriend. He was too busy trying (with little success) to advance his career to become a Soldier. Tifa is his childhood friend, and though he probably had a crush on her at some point, and maybe even she has some feelings for him, they're not in a relationship during the game (nor in the prequel Crisis Core, in which he's already left to become a Soldier). Aeris is, however, very close to be his girlfriend before she dies, and there's definately something going on between them from the start (although Cloud is too messed up in the head to make something out of it).

To make the answer short, no, she isn't.

Ah. Edited my initial post, and am preparing to commit Seppuku. My shame knows no bounds.

Anyway. Aeris was what the name was originally translated to, but Square themselves have since changed it to Aerith in various other games - Kingdom Hearts and such. However, there's still a portion of the fanbase who prefer Aeris - myself included - because that's what she was 'originally' called and that's how we remember her.

Honestly, I call her Aeris because it's easier to say than Aerith and doesn't sound like you have a lisp. Try it.

...also, since nobody's corrected me, I'm guessing my initial explanation of things wasn't too far off the mark?

I think it might have been worth differentiating when things happened in the movie vs game (such as Aerith and Zack's reunification) but otherwise it seems fine.
  • edited August 2011
If I could remember what happened in which medium, I would have done so. But it's good to know I understand the romance part of the plot, if nothing else.

Aerith and Zack reunite in Advent Children.

I thought they did in a novel as well. Probably wrong in saying that though.

    Cloud loves Barret.

You can get them to hook up during the Gold Saucer date, if you meet some very stringent prior requirements.

Cloud and Barret, sitting in a tree...

Without counting the number of squares or trying any intersecting words? That's just bad crossword playing on your part.

"Try" probably means checking if it fits. That implies counting the number of squares and checking intersecting letters. Do you count the number of squares without a specific word in mind? In that case, I'd find Han's crossword play superior to yours. ;)

BTW... I'd expect this word to have four letters. BECAUSE I already have a name in mind. ;)

Exactly what I meant. Not like I'm going to start writing letters down without counting the number of boxes first. Even in pencil that would be senseless

But yeah, the number or boxes would narrow this down pretty quick

This is just some confusing fan boy nonsense, in my honest opinion. I think people just went bat shit crazy with this story line and its characters. Cloud and Aeris, there is some romance, and there is a hint of some sort of romantic back ground, but over all I think he loves her as a sister or something that he looks after and she looks after him. I don't see any real indication of a sexual thing going on.

It's more romantic in the way of heroism and all of that.

While there's a bit of joking around in the later portion of this thread, the first page has some pretty complete answers to your question, particularly from Darth Marsden and Chyron8472 (though the main, real answer is apparently "nobody"). After all possible answers had been given, it's not surprising that the thread took a less serious direction. Not much more to be said.

I don't see what you mean by the FF series being "forever F**ed" either. It's pretty common in dramatic games with a large cast of characters that the main character won't be paired with anybody in particular, but a lot of potential relationships will be hinted at. If you asked who Link's girlfriend is in the Zelda series, you'd get an equally complicated "nobody" answer.

Just because you're sat behind the anonymous safety of a computer screen, it doesn't give you the right to throw insults at people. Try talking to people in that manner in the real world and see where it gets you.

Also, for the record; my post regarding Cloud and Barrett is completely valid seeming as it can be performed in-game.

What does this statement even mean (I am not merely referring to your dubious use of grammar)? It's ironic considering your mention of the word stupidity.

'Joking around' is being a bit generous, but yeah. You asked, we answered, then people started messing around.

Guy voiced an opinion. Be interested to know why he thinks it's f**ked, but eh. And don't even get me started on the pairings in the Zelda series. Just... don't.

Is it canon? IE: do any of the other games/films/books/comics/soundtracks/dolls/fan-films/hentai*/whatever take that stance? Nothing official does. The Barrett 'date' is nothing more than a joke for players to have fun with. The expanded FFVII universe forgets it ever happens, therefore it's not canon. So shush.

*Please don't post any hentai examples. My brain will never be clean.

Ah yeah forgot about that. I didn't bother reading due to not liking where the story went in Advent Children.

Love triangles aren't really that uncommon a thing in fictional stories of any sort. I don't know why you would need help figuring out who Cloud is going to wind up with if you just played through the game.
