Every release of The Legend of Zelda other than the original NES version (Game Boy Advance Classic NES Series, GameCube Collector's Edition, and Virtual Console, that I know of) has changed the opening crawl to spell it "Ganon", and manual included with the original NES version also spelled it "Ganon". The wiki you linked to even admits this in the article, which makes it a bit confusing why they would have the "Gannon" article at all. Anybody who thinks "Gannon" is anything other than a misspelling in the first release of the first game is mistaken.
Not to give you the impression that I get upset over it or anything. I just know my Zelda.
I get the joke you made, however it brings to my mind the perception that many (most?) people have that Twilight Princess was made specifically for Wii and Link is therefore right-handed... rather than that the game was in fact initially made for GameCube with a left-handed Link, and that the Wii port was entirely flipped horizontally to accommodate right-handed gamers without creating clipping issues.
Yeah... I actually did know that... the Gamecube version is my preferred version to play.... But I still wanted to make that joke.
My sister probably has a better picture of this, but we had a costume party for my extended family birthday party last Fall, during which my nephew dressed up as Adult Link from Ocarina of Time.
You can't see his shield properly in this photo, but it does look like the Hylian Shield (though made of wood).
It is he for whom I am probably purchasing Twilight Princess for Wii for Christmas (as he has asked me for it for a year and a half now but last year I got him The Wind Waker instead.)

FYI Twilight Princess is now $20 new for the Wii......
How are people stupid for not recognizing a character? Link's design was essentially based off of peter pan and robin hood and the like. And the shield? Maybe the kid wanted a shield with the costume. Who knows? It might be mildly annoying for your costume to not be recognized, trust me I know this feeling very well, but it's not the end of the world and it's understandable that not everyone knows him or her.
This reminds me of my Algebra teacher, who has a hell of a lot of Halo and Gears of War stuff in his classroom. Every Halloween, he's either Master Chief or Marcus Pheonix.

Actually, what you said was:
So on that count, you couldn't be more wrong.
Also, you may want to consider this:

I know that.
They're both great Zelda games. I like them both just fine.
