Favorite Game Soundtrack of 2011

edited March 2012 in General Chat
What was your favorite game soundtrack of 2011? Youtube posts to music appreciated :)

My favorite soundtrack of 2011 belonged to what was, in my opinion, the best game of 2011: Sword & Sworcery. A story of archetypes combining the gameplay of Punch Out, Point and Click Adventures, Twitter quirkiness and internet memetics, the game conveys the long road to defeating the creeping darkness locked in Mingi Taw and giving up the Trigons to the universe.

Dark Flute
A wanderer's melody

Ballad of the Space Babies
The ether manifests itself in corporeal form for one moment of glory

Unknowable Geometry
The forces of the cosmos are awful and awesome, and test your strength not as an evil, but as a force of the universe

Activating the Trigons
The universe is in your hands, and opens doors to the cosmos

The Cloud
Peace finds you

The Whirling Infinite
Your life to save the cosmos, your life into the universe

And We Got Older
All things pass, but did you really live?

Geez. Does someone have a list of all 2011 games? I can't make this decision without seeing everything. Frozen Synapse would rank very high, though. Loved Skyrim as well. There's also technically Minecraft since V1.0 was finally released in November.

@DAISHI - You are aware that this is the "Favorite Game Soundtrack of 2011" thread and not the "Every Game I Played in 2011" thread, right? :p

Also, you included quite a few re-releases in that list, which personally I don't think are fair game for a 2011 list.
  • edited February 2012
Well, it was copied directly from Wikipedia so :P And yes I'm aware I started the thread ;) I was just giving a list for Musically Inspired.

Yes, he was answer my question, Davies.

I'm going to have to stick with Frozen Synapse, Skyrim, and Minecraft (surprisingly Minecraft isn't listed!). Though, I haven't played Bastion yet but I'd really like to. It's on my Steam wishlist (;)). And it sounds pretty neat from what I've heard. But I must experience it myself.

Sonic Generations is kind of the Smash Bros of Sonic with all the re-experiences and music remixes, some of which were quite good, but it doesn't top those three in music.
  • edited February 2012
I was going to say Minecraft, too, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as a 2011 game.

    Trine 2

I don't know what it is about this soundtrack, but I could listen to it all day. It's so beautiful and really makes me think of classic fairy tales. Well...before the endings of most of those fairy tales. There's not too much music that goes with people getting their eyes ripped out, for instance.

Sword&Sworcery had some great music. Btw. Lone Star is good too, sounds a little bit after the Amiga as well, and Portal 2's music worked nicely in the game but i also can't remember a game where i wanted to listen to the music apart from the computer. A Grim Fandango Soundtrack also works in the car without the game, Sword&Sworcery doesn't, it somehow needs the pixels to offer its potential.

TTG also did some moody music for Puzzle Agent , can't remember if they reused it in Puzzle Agent 2 though. Sam&Max S3 music wasn't as good as the one for S2 anymore but i liked this one. Btw. does anyone know why they don't sell the soundtrack for Sam&Max S2 anymore?

Wait, Little Big Planet 2, the collectors edition, had some traCKS which also work apart from the game.

For me it's Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Like, a small segment of this track alone (0:57 to 1:35) makes me want to change the world.

And then there's epic stuff like "Scheduled for Deletion" and "The Pursuit", more cool peaceful/ambient stuff like "The Wounded Eagle" or "No Mistakes"... and the Main Theme is awesome.

Honestly I could have posted every track. That soundtrack is that good.
  • edited February 2012
It indeed has a number of very good ones but not all of them are great if remember the soundtrack correctly. And whilst it's definitely great game music, it's also not convincing as, dunno how to call it, ordinary/normal/real music.

Your mileage may vary. I listen to it in the car. But I like Jim Guthrie's pseudo chip sound.

Hey, fair enough. Maybe it's some more depth, purity or just better instruments that i'm missing.
  • edited February 2012
Yeah I think the only song with true instruments is "When we grew older" which is Jim Gunthrie on the guitar with drums in the background, the rest is pseudo chip music.

    Oh I almost forgot:

    The Binding Of Isaac

But I guess I heard it too often during the game by now.

On Bastion: I bought the game only for the Soundtrack on Steam. I didn't like the game (what a surprise) and the soundtrack was good. Some great tunes and some were just unlistenable crap.

For me, it's a tie between The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Batman: Arkham City. Both have fantastic main themes and the rest of the music throughout the games is very well done. Skyward Sword's theme is just plain amazing, and Arkham City's theme really brings to mind the absolute best of Batman.

Stand out tracks for them would be: Staff Roll from Skyward Sword and the song that plays when Batman pays his respects at Crime Alley from Arkham City.

Well, Bastion WAS a great soundtrack and, Steam-absentee that I am, hasn't even escaped my attention. My Korb-signed OST CD has a special place on my shelf. ;)

So much for the newcomers. However, it's not that one of the grand masters of video game music hadn't struck in 2011, and that is Christope Héral of Beyond Good & Evil fame. The versatility of his (and Billy Martin's!) "Rayman Origins" score is something to behold. Favorite excerpts: Tricky Treasure, Land of the Dead, Disco.
