I really don't get why so many people actually argue for the shittiest ending for any story in the history of man and try to think of it as a better or even somehow "genius" solution.
They are desperate. They see no other way to justify paying 60$ for this game on launch. I will do the same with Diablo 3.Either something like that or I'll have to kill myself.
Question, though. How can Diablo 3's ending be worse than Mass Effect's when the main complaint about that ending is the fact that it isn't the multiple endings that show how significant your actions were, while Diablo has always been known for its linearity when it comes to story?
Yeah... as far as Diablo goes, the main draw is getting to play with cool abilities and mowing down legions of enemies like a superhero. Oh, and the multiplayer.
The story is just kinda tacked on to give some sort of direction to the whole thing. So complaining about the ending would be kinda silly.

Even if I hadn't liked the ending, I still would've felt justified in paying full launch price for this game.
Infact it was the ending I suggested earlier. The refuse to choose and failing, but hope for the next generation one.
(Though I wish they had also put in my other one, the succeeding against all odds because of how well you did)
Welp. Its the best we are probably going to get! XD

Shepard failing to save his/her galaxy, but granting the knowledge for the next surviving citizens to stop them?
I wouldn't know if that honestly changes too much about the whole "our choices never mattered WTF" side of things, but ok...
Yup. It makes our choices null.
But Bioware being so stupid and stubborn, it really is the closest to a logical ending that we will ever get.
I'm still not getting Mass Effect 3.
Infact, if I wasn't so lazy, I would play up to the end of 2, then just write down what happned after that. (Taking actual events of 3 and the narrative I was following in 1 and 2)
That would be a much more enjoyable experience than the actual Mass Effect 3 will ever be.
I'm not trolling there. I am serious. Everything I have heard about the real Mass Effect 3 puts me off so, so badly.
Having watched the new ending, and the extended Control and Destroy endings, I can say there's a damn good amount added considering it's a free DLC.
Not just a (not unexpected) slideshow with voiceover, but there's significant scenes showing various races celebrating the defeat/leaving of the Reapers. Since I didn't watch the Synthesis ending I can't say if it's significantly different, but both existing ones I saw added a lot more closure to the story (Shepard still 'gasps' in the Destroy ending though).
The new ending starts well, but basically gives players the middle finger. You basically tell the StarChild to eff off (or shoot him, same thing happens) and then that's it. You don't do anything. You just sit there and, essentially, let the Reapers WIN. Oh, but the blue chick's recorded everything so that the next cycle of life will learn from their mistakes and not repeat them, blah blah blah. It's such a cheap cop-out, initially teasing us with a great speech from Shepard saying "We're going to forge our own path" and then following that up with NOTHING. Such bull.
But the extended endings are much improved. Kinda put an end to the indoctrination theory with the 'this is what happens after the fact' thing, but given how much better the existing endings are, I'm OK with that.
Basically, if you despised the original endings, these probably won't change your mind. But if you thought the original endings were bad but fixable, then chances are these will do exactly that for you. And hey, if you liked the original endings, well, now there's more of them for you to enjoy. Huzzah.
Also, one final note - the music is still beautiful. Just sayin'.
Underwhelming at best.
EA poisons everything it touches all for the sake of pumping out games quickly for maximum profit.
The thing I find most concerning is that the FPS games that EA is publishing all are starting to look exactly the same.
Great graphics, but very little, but repetitive game play, with a minimalist interface.
I'm not a sweary person, but seriously, what the fuck were you expecting? A MGS4-style epilogue that's near an hour? The endings function as conclusions, as they have since THE LAUNCH OF THE GAME, and they bothered to listen to ALL THE POINTLESS BICKERING of those who chose that because it wasn't their cup of tea to make it their PERSONAL CRUSADE to get it changed, rather than suck it up like they should have.
I had one problem with the ending, which was the fact the flashbacks you see when going to make the final choice were pre-set as a bunch of people I never really cared about and now it's people you actually did care about.
Actually, in this day and age, we pretty much all expect at least half the length of a Metal Gear Solid ending, especially from such a "high-profile" developer like EA.
The most helpful review on the German Amazon page for Mass Effect 3 is brilliant. And there is no way to translate it properly without a lot of work. In German
Not an exact translation, but I think it captures the spirit pretty well.
Act One
Boss: "OK people, good work so far. We have 8 weeks until the release date."
Developer: "Yes, thanks to the... uh... voluntary overtime, we're well on schedule. Only thing missing is the crowning glory - the ending. But don't worry, the team's already worked out an explanation of where the Reapers came from and what they wanted. We've figured out different directions for Renegade and Paragon players, and got plans for a glimpse into the future of Shepard's companions, the development of the different races and what impact they had on the player, all that stuff."
Boss: "Yeah, sure, great. But it can wait. I think the the most important thing is that we make sure ME3 is integrated with Origin. Otherwise, we don't have a finished product."
Developer: "Um... sure, that'll only take, like, 5 weeks or so... * thinks * ...maybe we can set up beds in the office."
Boss: "And let the heater run overnight? No way! But back to the game, I just had a great idea. Get rid of that guy Javík from the main story."
Developer: "What! But she's an integral part! We've worked so hard on it..."
Boss: "I know, I know, but see, I wanna grab as much money from this as I can- I MEAN, we need to make sure that we don't get people pirating the game, so we're gonna make it Day One DLC instead, with a code for it inside brand new copies. That way they'll HAVE to pay money to get the whole story. It's genius. And not at all copied from Batman, no sir."
Developer: "But... that'll take weeks..."
Boss: "Well, you've still eight of them. Enough talk, I need a cigarette break."
Act Two
Boss: "Report!"
Developer: "I don't think we have enough time to make all the changes you want. An extra week or two would really help us out."
Boss: "What! And lose the deposit on my new car- I MEAN disappoint the fans? Absolutely not!
Developer: "... well, we might just be able to make it if we scale back on the ending a little..."
Boss: "Hey, y'know what? My son Hannes - you've met him, right? Well I thought it would be great if he was in this thing, maybe as a friend of Shepards? I know he's a little young, he's 6 next month, but you can work round that, right?"
Developer: "But..."
Boss: "I've got it! He can meet Shepard in these dramatic chase scenes. Like something out of a psychological thriller. YES! It's all coming together! Trust me, everyone wants to see their avatar go slightly nuts."
Developer: "... but we've only got 4 weeks... new scenes take time..."
Boss: "Don't argue with me, bitch."
Act Three
Boss: "Looking good! I like what you've done with his hair."
Developers: "Um, thanks. Look, we've only got 2 weeks before we have to go gold, we NEED to work on the ending. Maybe if we drop a few characters, make it really simple and reuse a bunch of existing assets we can pull SOMETHING together..."
Boss: "Sure, go for it."
Developer: "OK, right, we'll start on it right away-"
Boss: "Oh, before you do: In the last meeting, management decided that, y'know, since they're getting paid the big bucks they should have SOME input into this thing. So I had to explain the game to them in simple terms - y'know, huge alien machines threaten all life in the galaxy - and they had the most amazing idea for the ending."
Developer: "* gulp *"
Boss: "OK, first, forget everything that they told you to put into the ending of the last games. Don't worry, nobody played them anyway, it'll be fine. Now, here's what they want for Mass Effect 3:"
Here's a few scenes not in the final ending that have been added. The big one is showing how your teammates end up back on the Normandy, but there's a few other scenes as well. You may have noticed three new dialogue choices in the conversation with the StarChild - here those choices are shown to you. It's basically a vague, but interesting nonetheless description of what the StarChild is and who created it.
To the people flaming people for not liking the ending of ME3 I have a suggestion.
The next time you go to McDonalds or any other fast food place or restaurant, and they get your order wrong, "Deal with it" and just take the order home, even though it wasn't the food you were expecting to get
Force yourself to enjoy it, don't bring it back and demand that they get your order right, because apparently we're not supposed to expect we get a good product for our hard earned money.

Unfair comparison. People don't demand author's change the endings just because they don't like thm.
They didn't 'get the order wrong', you clearly ordered one thing expecting it to have something it clearly didn't. I, however, got exactly what I expected and greatly enjoyed it. I'm not entitled to claim that the people who've spent their lives working on making this piece of entertainmant that their ideas are shite and mine are better, because it's their life's pursuit. What on earth did you want? I legitimately read a comment today that said they should have just made an option to destroy the reapers at no cost. This would be the most fucking idiotic thing they could have done, and ruined any tension. You want an option with no costs? Go with control, then (as everyone on the Citadel dies in Synthesis as well due to it exploding). You can't get what you want. No matter what you choose, no matter what you try, there's always a difficult decision you have to make. That's part of the moral/theme of Mass Effect, yet some people clearly don't understand that and just want Shepard to win and become Space President or whatnot.

This entire multi-page thread and you single out my very first post in it with expletives?
Go get a life and stop raging at your keyboard.

It's funny that you mention this because this is actually something I do. I'm being completely serious.
Okay, just did the extended cut for Synthesis. Spoilers:
Well, I was glad that they showed Joker coming to pick up my team-mates. I was afraid the game'd just kill them off, so I picked my least favorite team-mates, ie. Ashley and James. Lots of small touches, such as Joker being pretty much forced to leave, and the fact that the Normandy's engines don't get ripped to pieces is good in my book. Also, the Mass Relays don't go boom. I really liked that you could question the Catalyst over everything, and the comparison to a "cleansing fire" really put the whole thing in perspective. And the extra epilogue. I grinned when I realized that EDI was narrating it. I loved seeing the Reapers actually helping. I loved seeing that there were signs that all the planets, especially Tuchanka, were being rebuilt. And I loved seeing the little cute baby krogan. And then the memorial wall. FUCK. I knew Liara was going to be devastated by Shepard's loss, but seeing that even EDI was breaking down...damn. And then the Normandy lifting off to fly away into the sunset was bittersweet.
All in all...I am so glad to have this game. I loved it even before this, and this confirmed everything I had been surmising.
EDIT: Watching the other endings on IGN and getting ads for the Navy narrated by Admiral Anderson. WIN.

I do have to agree that the McDonalds comparison was kind of shite.
Look, the thing is, this whole Mass Effect 3 ordeal is pretty much the same as what happened with Spore or the Fable series. Okay, sure, half of the outcry on Spore was because of its shite DRM, but the other half was because it was such a huge disappointment due to promises that were given. Same went for Fable, although after Fable 2 we stopped believing Molyneux altogether, so Fable 3 shouldn't have been that much of a disappointment (spoilers, it still was, which is actually an amazing feat).
Tell you what. Next time Nintendo poops out yet another game like Nintendo Land or some other Mario party game, stop complaining about Nintendo not being original or bringing the hardcore gaming industry down. Because clearly we can't complain about some ending of an otherwise (according to a good lot of people) perfect game.
My analogy was an attempt to show people that we CAN change things, and don't have to assume the roles of just "Consumers" and take whatever is given to us and always have a smile on our faces when doing it.
Face it, EA is buying up gaming companies, making them churn out games within a set amount of time, buggy or not, and EA isn't known for its Tech Support.
EA treats all of its customers under the "Guilty until proven innocent" rule with its draconian DRM, yet when it's their turn to help the customer after a sale, they really couldn't care less.
Too often, when I see a thread on other forums of people complaining about DLC, (Read the Risen 2 Debacle, where you could unlock their DLC with cheat codes, so the DLC released IN THE CODE of the game, and locked to squeeze an extra few dollars from people), instead there are die hards who just "LOL, who cares if they charge for DLC? It's their product...LOL"
Ignoring the fact that the DLC was already in the game, but purposely LOCKED solely to charge people for code already there.
People get called names and insulted for sticking up for their rights as customers and complaining about a product they bought.
I just can't understand people insulting someone for being mad about their purchase and voicing it.
If you're told the product you buy is going to do one thing, but instead it does another, and NOT the thing you were told it does, you have a right to complain, yet there are people out there that will flame and insult you and instead blindly stick up for the company that lied about their product.
Its difficult if not impossible to return opened software in the United States, so why wouldn't someone be mad when they open up a "Game of the Year" awarded game (they need to stop awarding games Months before they're released) that received high accolades from paid review sites, only to find it it's completely the opposite and not worth the $60??
People are just told to "Shut up" or "lol"ed at, or get a flame post full of expletives about how they "Should stop being a whiner" etc ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
Face it, EA is buying up gaming companies, making them churn out games within a set amount of time, buggy or not, and EA isn't known for its Tech Support.
You may say a lot of things about EA but I had never any problem with their support. Getting an answer in 30 minutes for an emailed problem on a sunday was mindbending.
Well, I'm happy with the SAME Endings in Mass Effect 3, because there is finally a sense of closure, rather than feeling like I'm left scratching my head.
As a lot of people have obviously misunderstood in this thread, a lot of people (myself included) who didn't like the ending, weren't demanding a new ending, we were just asking for a "OK, SO what the hell just happened, and where are they now?" ending narrative.
Those of us who only wanted that, have gotten our wish. Yay!
There's been far too many flames thrown around in here because people were refusing to understand that a lot of us only wanted an "explanation/narration/what happened/where are they now" to go along with the endings in the game.
