Lost my saves!!!!!

edited December 2012 in The Walking Dead
Did this happen to anyone else?

I have completed episodes 1 & 2 and I just turned the game on to see if I can start episode 3 and I have no saves from the first 2 games!!

I literally have to replay all of the games now. I don't understand why this happened?:mad::mad::mad:

I had a similar issue, I replayed both episodes and now my game has messed up yet again and isn't recognising my progress past episode one.

To be honest I'd wait for a response for these bugs to be fixed before wasting another 4-6 hours of your life.

I'm sick of all this shit. I love the games concept, but TT sucks in every way possible. I'm done even trying with this game until it's complete and is bug free; which won't be until after New Year. I didn't pay to be their beta tester.

Same problem here. That's 20 hours down the drain, what the hell?

    Hi there,
It happened the same to me, I lost all my saves and settings and sometimes I can't run the game.
I have checked the saves folder and I still have them...

Check out this thread. I had the same problem.

This is for Mac only, but replace Application Support with Program Files/Telltale Games or wherever you installed the game.

    Otherwise... try this one:

I'm still confused. :( What am I supposed to do to fix this? I have my original TheWalkingDead folder saved, what do I do with it?
  • edited August 2012
Eh... I lost my saves when i installed Episode 2, even while they were still in the correct folder, but the game couldn't detect them anymore. So i had to go with random choices for Episode 2 (gladly it was similar to my original decisions).

Now if installing Episode 3 really messes up the saves AGAIN, then i won't even install it.

Is it really this hard for TT to fix this?
  • edited August 2012
I havent even installed episode 3, I logged on to check if it was out yet and they were gone.

I lost my saves from ep1 when ep2 showed up. Now I lost my saves from ep2 when ep3 is here. WTF TTG? IS IT SO FREAKING HARD TO PLAYTEST YOUR PRODUCT?

I don't have much time to play games, so seeing my progress gone is annoying. I hoped that they would learn from previous mistakes, and I could enjoy new episode with no problem.

It still says "coming soon" for ep3 on steam, even though there are achievements for ep3 already.
  • edited August 2012
i remember this happening to me for ep 2. i didnt "lose" my saves but i had to dig through my folders, found them and add them to the new folder for ep2 i think, then it worked fine. but now my issues is the game crashes when i launch it (PC) so i cant even access the game at all the even download ep 3. this also happened last time but i forgot what i did a month ago.

I'm having the same problem on Xbox. I see the game save on my hard drive. But walking dead doesn't detect it. Aaarrrggg!!!

I've lost mine also. Tried to start Ep 3, game kept restarting me at the beginning of Episode 1.

It has now auto saved over 2 of my files.:(

I'm left with 1 save game near the end of Ep 1.

How do you know those new saves you make will carry over?
  • edited August 2012
Same thing. Not Episode 3, but Episode 2. I've basically given up on the game at this point. I've played it on my Mac and my PC, re-installed once on each one. I've played through Episode 1 four or five times now and I can still never get to Episode 2 even though I've paid for all 5. It always says I don't have any saves and it makes me pick random saves for Episode 2. Ugh. Worst $25 I've ever spent.

Okay, that last exaggeration may have been untrue. At least I got $5 of gameplay out of it with Episode 1...
  • edited August 2012
Yeah, I lost all my saves the last time I played Episode 2. Pretty irritating.

    xbox fix
hey right ive spent all day with the same problem but i think ive fixed it try this.
when it says choose random choices press B to go back. when it pops up the screen that shows your woefully empty saves press the guide button and sign out. you are then given a message saying you must be signed in with the profile that purchased the game to play. sign back in. et voilia my saves where back after i chose device option before the start screen
it worked for me it might work for you.
    xbox only

Lost all my saves as well. Telltale will have to fix these issues or they will lose pretty much all paying costumers since most will not stand for bullshit like this. How fucking hard is it really? Never ever played a game with such a broken save system. Honestly, what the actual fuck?

Seems like a common problem. Encountered it yesterday, posted up some threads and didn't get a useful response. Had a check through the support forums and there are a lot of threads on the issue, some being months old, which have yet to be addressed by any TTG staff.

There are a few 'fixes' which people have come up with, most which do not work or are one-off cases where something has decided to swap and recognise the save.

Basically from what I can tell it is linked in to how the game recognises save files (PC version), using 2 different locations to store information (No idea why) and 2 separate "Prefs.prop" files which seem to hold any user profile information (assuming also the most up-to-date save.) Sometimes a pref file decides to dump all your user data, and this messes with the save recognition. (again, an assumption.)

It looks like the problem can originate from close to anything, just when the game decides it wants to fuck up. Personally mine came from when my choices were reversed during the openings of Ep 2 so I replayed Ep 1 with a rewind on the last chapter.

From what I can see on the attentiveness of the TTG staff towards their support forum, you aren't going to get a reply nor a fix for a while.

Edit: Don't bother trying to replay episode 1 either, it seems this problem is just as likely to crop up again for no reason.
  • edited August 2012
And im not one of those who will bother trying to "fix" it by meddling in regedit and shit since stuff like that never works anyway. It will just make things worse probably. How hard can it be to just release a hotfix for the save issue? I mean seriously, its a big problem on all plattforms it seems with the saves. Atleast adress the damn issue TTG!

    Xbox 360

Replayed part of Episode 1 and Episode 2 and made a backup of the save on a memory card.

EVERYTIME I try and start Episode 3 it takes me right back to the beginning of Episode 1. Not even getting the question about random choices anymore.

EVERYTIME it does this it auto saves over my game files.

Pathetic that Telltale have been aware of these kind of issues since Episode 2 and seemingly not bothered to do anything about it.

what bull, i've played all three saves and two of them have been erased (especially my main play), wtf, 4 hours of make up time?

Which files did you copy over, exactly? Only the files with extension .save?
  • edited August 2012
My save games were gone too. Sucks I had to "randomly generate choices" for the first 2 episodes. Not that big of a deal though cause it seems to me the only choice that really makes a different from game to game so far was from Episode 1 whether or not you chose to save the guy or the girl as it will impact which one is in your party in Episode 3. You can just keep reloading until you get the party member you actually saved.

    The problem
I've finished both episode 1 and 2. When starting the game today to FINALLY play episode 3, the game only showed a savegame stating 'episode 1'. It looked like the game didn't save anything from episode 2.
In the folder containing the savegames (C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead), there were .save files that corresponded with episode 2 (save_11 - save_28). Apparently the game DID save the game (hence the files being there), but it isn't finding it for some reason.

    The fix
The game reads the prefs.prop stored in X:\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default . Copy your prefs.prop file from the my documents folder (C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead) to the steamapps folder.

This is probably caused by a register error telling the game to read/write the prefs.prop file stored in the steamapps folder.
Note that this means you'll have to do this every time you restart your game!

    tl;dr : Take a look in this folder for a prefs.prop : X:\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default

PS. I made this thread in the discussion forum too to help as much people as possible. A fair trade for Telltale not helping AT ALL.

Got win7 64bit and @ win98/me compatiblity i can´t set the game too fullscreen i use winxp service pack2 mode there i can switch back to fullscreen und fullhd res my savegames are still there but the game overwrites the master save file ((prefs.prop)this file save the players progress in game and capter position) and that new one dosnt work with my old savegames too. For restoring lost floder browse in explorer to C:\Users\(user name)\My Documents\Telltale Games\ there click right to the floder \The Walking Dead and choose the Previous Versions Tab and click on Check backups button if win 7 is correctly setuped it will be give you the option to restore the floder from 1 day before programchange and so you can restore your prefs.prop and savegames if you have lost something at the first start up in any compatiblity mode but this will work only one time after changes from an program on a floder has made so copy the restored files to a secure place too that u have a backup if the game will be fixed.
In compatiblity mode i can play only from the beginning too or use an automatically createt storyline to start episode3 because the master save file will not be accept any old savegames and the game itself will not support the old master save file and overwrites the old one each time with a new one if i tried to replace it manually. So i think we have to wait for an fix or play the game from the beginning ;) to get our own storyline back.

    have a nice day

There is some sort of fix, locate your original savegamedirectory.
    (mine was "user\documents\telltale games\walking dead" in win7 64bit)

Then move the saves to another directory (files with .save)
Launch 'the game' and start a 'new game' and wait untill you see in the top corner the 'save icon'.

-Close the game, look in the same directory and see if there is a .save, in my case there was a save_6.save.
    - Delete it
    - Copy your last savegame from the savegames you moved before.
    - Move it to the directory and rename in the name the savegame you deleted was (so i copied my save_29.save to the dir and renamed it save_6.save)
    - Start the game up, select the save game (timestamp doesn't matter).
    - Go to episode three whatever it says (and your choices should work)
  • edited August 2012
    I got it to work.
    I had the old saves.
So I deletet all the saves, startet the game from episode 2, then let it generate a save, then I close the game, and copy the last BIG save 100kb or so from the old save and rename it to the new save, so lets say the new save is called Save_6.save and the old is called save_37.save i take and copy over save_37.save and delete Save_6.save and then rename save_37.save to Save_6.save.
Just remember to take the save with ~ 100kb, It took me some tryes, cus sometimes it dosent work, but I got both my save games back, you just have to play the "end" part of episode 2, but It have all the things you done in episode 1, and after you are ready to play episode 3 :)
Hope you guys can figure it out :)

Btw the save games are found in
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games, atleast thats where they are on my computer win7

I found a way to carry over your episode 2 decisions (not ep 1 tho) and posted it there. I saw another solution posted by somebody else as well, tho I didn't test that. You should look into them.

Steam & Walking Dead have some major "save file" issues.

When I start a new game, all my saves are there. But fascinatingly enough, after I start a game, I can go back to the "main menu", and my saves are gone. (It refers to OLD saves IE "Episode 1" - it doesn't acknowledge my later saves when I'm already in game).

I'm not asking how to fix it.

I'm merely suggesting that the Telltale / Steam community (Employees / Developers) look into this and fix it.

    ;)

    Specs:

    Windows 7 64 bit
    Steam

    Even crazier:

Now I'm starting a brand new game. And started episode 3. The game starts out towards the end of the episode. (wtf). On a new, fresh game.

    Grrrr
