I got it to work.
I had the old saves.
So I deletet all the saves, startet the game from episode 2, then let it generate a save, then I close the game, and copy the last BIG save 100kb or so from the old save and rename it to the new save, so lets say the new save is called Save_6.save and the old is called save_37.save i take and copy over save_37.save and delete Save_6.save and then rename save_37.save to Save_6.save.
Just remember to take the save with ~ 100kb, It took me some tryes, cus sometimes it dosent work, but I got both my save games back, you just have to play the "end" part of episode 2, but It have all the things you done in episode 1, and after you are ready to play episode 3
Hope you guys can figure it out
Btw the save games are found in
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games, atleast thats where they are on my computer win7
Doing this might cause some other issues in your game, and is a bit overcomplicated to get the result you're after. The best way to move over your existing data if your Telltale Games user folder changes locations is simply the following:
In the NEW location (in your case C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games), delete the The Walking Dead folder.
From the OLD location, copy The Walking Dead folder to the new location.
Here's an example. My Telltale Games folder changes like so:
You'd delete "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead", if it exists.
Then you'd copy "C:\Users\crofael\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead" to "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games".
All of the files in The Walking Dead folder need to be relocated for your saves to work properly. Even if your save game seems to load correctly after what you did, you might run into other bugs later on.
I hope this made sense, and please let me know if you have any more questions.
Just wanted to say, this didn't work for me. I wish I could get my old saves back but it's looking like it won't be happening but I will keep my old saves in case someone from TellTale wants to crawl out from under their rock and actually HELP me.
Really, I need a red name to tell me why my folder with up to #82.save files comes up with:
NEW GAME
NEW GAME
NEW GAME
At least a reason as to why 20+ hours of hard work can just disappear.

Sorta pissed! So After Ep.2 i went back to replay a another story. It didnt show my other saves, i was like wtf " ok ill just reinstall and do it over". I then did the story all the way over to end of ep.2 stopped. Tried to even load it before ep 3 update came out, didnt work and to even add my saves arnt there. Somone Please Help.!
I have a similar problem. Played up to chapter 4 or 5 in Episode 3, watched the game create a save, and then Quit. When I load TWD back up, nothing. Nothing but a set of new games.
The save files are there! I can see them! I can point to them! I saw somebody regedit to make sure Telltale is pointing to the right directory, is that something I need to do?
Could get any sort of recognition of my choices. Tried the restart ep 2, copy over old save, replay end of 2, start 3 trick, but some of the choices were off in the recap. So after trying to fix it for a long while I resigned myself to having to start over.
I restarted and tried to match all my choices step by step using a gameplay video I recorded. Finished episode 1 taking up some of my valuable evening time. Out of curiosity reloaded the game a shortwhile later to check out the recap at the start of episode two and the saves are gone.
Yes, that's right the saves from an episode I restarted and completed tonight, are already gone, tonight, after restarting the program 20 minutes later. F this. I was so pleasantly surprised with the quality of the story and the decent mechanics in an adventure setting. I really looked forward to episode 3. After finding no acknowledgement from Telltale and no fix for the issue and then wasting more time to replay and have that not work. I may just been done with the series. Sad.
I've had save problems since Episode 2 was released!
First I played through Ep1, when it came to Ep2, my save had just disappeared! So I played both Ep1 & Ep2 in one sitting. After quitting the game and starting again, I found that the saves had disappeared again. After much searching (mainly on this forum), I found a time-stamp fix and was able to get right up to where you are JUST about to leave the farm in Ep2.
Now here's my annoyance: I saved Carley! She's right there in my Episode 2 save, however at the start of Ep3, Kenny mentions Doug and he's standing right there when we get back to camp!
Where on earth did this go wrong?
Should I just delete all of my save files and start from scratch again? I don't want to do that, but the game is so good I would be willing to do it!
Basically, I waited until episode 3 of Walking Dead installed to play it again, I played the first and manage to get the decisions to go through the second... sadly the saves were all screwed and wouldn't work. So I uninstalled the game and removed all the saves, tried again. Then starting a new game... I played episode one, seemed fine, tried the second episode and then my decisions would not continue, I tried the prop.file copy and paste solution which worked for me when the second episode came out but this time nothing seems to be working!
Extremely infuriating as I really enjoy the game yet I can't play it fully since none of my decisions follow work, overall I've become very disappointed with this game and just wish I never bothered purchasing. Hopefully someone knows something and can help me.
This issue has been popping up for alot of people. Unfortunatly TellTale doesnt seem to be in a hurry to patch a fix for this.
I don't know if your playing on a PC or console, but there are a few threads out there that offers possible solutions. just dont get your hopes up, I've tried 2-3 of them and none of them worked.

I probably can't help you TBH because I've not experienced this issue, but you left out an important piece of information for anyone who can.
Hi guys,
Im sorry if this has been posted already under a different thread, i couldnt find it if it has been posted and that's why i wanted to start a thread for this. Almost 2 weeks ago, my laptop crashed (harddisk was replaced) and eventually i lost all my save files, since i played episode one almost 4 times and episode 2, 3 times, i dont want to start all over again. I had a save file where i played as i saw fit, a file where i supported Lilly and a file in which i supported Kenny. I thought maybe i could try the random story generator to make up for my lost saves, only to fail. When i generate a new story from episode 3, i cant see the decisions the game made for me. So here are my questions;
Q1-I purchased the game on Steam so i thought that maybe there could be a way to retrieve my lost save files (i know that the game stores the save files on the computer so probably not and i couldnt salvage anything from the harddisk but i just wanted to ask anyway). Is there a way?
Q2- Is there a mod or something like that, that will make ME generate the story so i can make up for my lost files? And if no, why the hell not?
Q3- When i generate a random story, is there anyway i can see 'what the generator generated for me' ?
Thank you.
You know, there's been other threads about how to take saves from the folder so you can switch them with other saves. You might be able to use the advice from that thread to create backups of your saved games.
My advice is to look for the forum about how to import and move saves and back yours up in case it happens again. Since its only one episode, just replay it.
Hi all, I reformated my computer and copied my steamapps folder...unfortunately Walking Dead did not remember my preferences going into episode 3...seriously did Telltale not fix anything from ep2?
So here are some of the choices I made, if anyone made the same or came close, can someone upload the prefs.prop file for me?
Thanks. BTW SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT PLAYED UP TO EP3
1. Chose to save Doug
2. Almost always side with Kenny, not Lilly
3. Stole supplies from car
4. Generally been protective of Clementine (saved her from eating humans, etc)
5. Did not kill the two brothers
6. Killed Lilly's dad
If only steam had the power to allow some sort of cloud storage for your save games, oh wait lol.
Yeah it sucks, cannot believe in such a important game they dont take advantage of cloud save storage. especially for a game like this where its all about choices.
in 2012 you shouldn have to sit and waste time looking for tons of folders and copy saves away to save them.
My save games got messed up after episode 3 came out I was unable to rewind during episode 3 and it would not save. When I left the game it would say coming soon on episode 3. To fix this problem -
Step 1: Back up your saves the location is "C:\Users\Username\Documents\Telltale Games" Just go ahead and zip the walking dead folder.
Step 2: Use steam back up feature to back up the walking dead.
Step 3: Delete local content through steam and also delete the telltale games folder in documents.
Step 4: Reinstall the walking dead with your back up.
Step 5: If your saves are no longer in the telltale games folder unzip your saves back into the telltale games folder.
Step 6: Start the game as normal and your saves will be back with correct date/time and rewind will be working.
I have this on Steam. No problems with it until now. I was in the middle of episode 3. I saved and shut down. Next time I came back to it the game loads in Windowed mode, and every attempted to switch it to Full Screen causes it to crash. When I try to play the game in Windowed mode, my game save is gone!!
I adore you guys for this great game but please DONT even bother to release another episode until you patch up your shitty save file system which fks up all the choices you made while carrying over to next episode.
Have played multiple times but all my efforts were in vain.
Why the Hell arent the choices carried properly to next episode?
Why do the save files get corrupted?
Why cant some simple system be used. Just copy prev episode's savegame folder to "My Documents" and everything falls in place?
((You can just refer how Bioware's Mass Effect did choices & savefiles perfectly))
For God sake charge a few dollars more from next episode on but fix these problems. Gamers all around the world want to get through their story the way they intended to be.
Hope the next episode solves all these problems.
Good Luck.
Like in episode one I said Duck wasn't bitten. But in Episode two at the fridge Kenny's all like "I still remember how you all thought Duck was bitten!" I was like..The ****?!
Like in episode one I said Duck wasn't bitten. But in Episode two at the fridge Kenny's all like "I still remember how you all thought Duck was bitten!" I was like..The ****?!
I believe this one is legitimately a bug in the choices. From my experience, no matter what you say, if you choose "Let's reason with him." when Kenny asks what you should do about Larry, it counts as siding with Larry. You can even stand up to him and tell him it's you before anyone else, and the game still says you supported Larry instead of Kenny. It's a really big mistake, since the dialogue in episode 1 reflects what actually happened, while the dialogue in episode 2 makes it seem like you were ready to throw Duck out the door.
I too have experienced some very frustrating save issues, ranging from my choices not being saved correctly to my save outright disappearing, replaced with a far older save. I just ended up trying to do it all over again, only to run into the same issues. Probably one of the more frustrating things I've experienced. (Before someone mentions it, I've already tried the registration fix.)
As per my previous post, which a mod moved and subsequently ignored, my game is broken, and I demand a refund.
I have spent a week discussing with Steam, who have referred me to Telltale - saying they will not refund.
Telltale, please listen.
Your product is faulty. Under Australian law, you are required to provide a refund in circumstances where your product is not fit for service.
I demand a refund.
You ACKNOWLEDGE that you don't know how to fix your own broken product, you put up hours worth of recommended 'fixes', which as you know do NOTHING for the people who actually have the problem. You are WASTING MY TIME. Give me my money back.
If Steam took your money, why would Telltale give it back?
This.
Not to mention Telltale is a US based company, so they don't have to follow that Australian law of yours.
Also, what is the actual problem with the game you are facing?
Also if you have any tech problems instead of saying "I want a refund" straight away ask some of us. We might have had the same problems and know how to get round them. If that fails then post the tech problem in the Game Support section of the main Telltale Games Forum.
Good for you. If you bought a faulty product, you're entitled to a refund with minimal questions. It's beyond ridiculous to put the burden on someone buying something to spend hours trying to get it to work.
I suspect the TTG is bound by at least some of the laws of a country they're doing business with. Compliance might be difficult, but consider a business incorporated in Tanzania, which has no laws forbidding lead paint in children's toys. They don't get to say "tough shit, everybody" when it's discovered that the toys they're selling in the US are poisonous. They have some degree of obligation.
While it would require persistence, proving TTG violated Austrian law might cause the Austrian government to issue an injunction against selling in Austria until they're in compliance, and are issuing lawfully mandated refunds. This kind of thing has definitely happened before and has been dealt with like that.
