Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney thread

edited August 2013 in General Chat
Well has anyone else played this great point and click series for DS? I recently got the IPad HD Trilogy that came out on the app store and since the game plays a bit like a point and click game I was wondering if anyone else have played the great series. So far I've only gotten to case 5 on the first Phoenix Wright but if i had to pick a favourite for the first game it would ether be Turnabout Sisters or Turnabout Goodbyes. Anyway so what is everyone's thoughts on the series?

I really couldn't get into the series to be honest. I havent even played the games. All I've seen are funny ytps that use clips from the game like this one right here

I try to but finding the first DS game for a reasonable price seems difficult.

The first game is on Amazon US for $20. They were rare for a while but they seem to have either reprinted them or just unearthed a bunch of unsold copies. The third game is under 20 bucks too, but the second game is oddly more expensive.

If you have an iOS device, you can buy the first game perfectly emulated, or the whole original trilogy remade in HD. The remake isn't flawless (the most frustrating element is not being able to double-tap to speed through dialog as it appears) but it looks lovely.

The first 3 games are also available for download on WiiWare.

The series is definitely worth playing if you enjoy game narrative and clever puzzles, which presumably you do. The only real recurring downside, outside of a few "meh" chapters, are the moments when you've figured out something well before the playable character has, so you have to follow a trail of what you know to be red herrings for a bit before the game lets you present the real answer. It's not that bad though if you keep your mind in the story. I love it and am quite exited for the next game.

I can not order anything from Amazon.com. I have no credit card.
And even if I could I have no idea if a NTSC version of a game will work in my PAL 3DS XL.

    DS games are region free.
(I have a few US carts that work fine on my 3DS)

    3DS games however, are NOT.

    My favorite is Ice Climbers.

Somehow I knew Ryan would be behind this thread.

Meh give me a break, half the parts of the games is a point and click game and you do have to use clues for puzzles. Its in the same way I would consider Professor Layton as part point and click as well.

On another note is Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney ever coming out anywhere else other than Japan?
  • edited June 2013
Just like with the second Edgeworth game, there seems to be no word.

Great so 2 great game series in a crossover may not come out anywhere other than Japan (sigh)

I finally finished Rise from the Ashes a couple of days ago. It must have taken me over 10 hours with that one case alone.

On another note anyone wanna tell me what they would rate Justice for All? I finished the first case where
    Phoenix loses his memory
called The Lost Turnabout and it was pretty cool. I'm on Reunion and Turnabout in Justice for All :)

It's been a while since I played it, but for me that's one of the most memorable of the series, so I think it's overall very good.

@der_ketzer: I bought the first few games on eBay since I couldn't find them at a reasonable price in stores anywhere either. Some eBay sellers accept PayPal, if that's what you're using.

I haven't played the DS version. Is it the same as it was on the gameboy? If yeah, That I've played those cases and I thought it was pretty good. I mostly like these detective types of games/shows/movies/anime.. you name it.. I'm all for it and I loved Phoenix Wright when I first got introduced to it.

If there is one character I hope returns in Ace Attorney Duel Destinies then I hope its Ema Skye. It would be very funny to see Maya and Ema working with Phoenix.

Are they working on another presumably Japan exclusive game? Hadn't heard of that.
  • edited July 2013
It will be coming out in both North America and Europe but unfortunely only as a Digital version from the Eshop.

Well I finished Reunion, and Turnabout. Great case and Pearl was a great character that was introduced and Phoenix reactions is so funny when Pearl believes Maya is Phoenix's ''special one''.

So Dual Destinies has gotten an M rating. Does anyone know what the ESRB was smoking? I watched the trailers and it's not like there's anything significantly different.

Maybe they are just not showing the stuff that is responsible for the rating.

They've been heavily promoting a scenario where someone blows up the courthouse. When most of the series has been about one-on-one killings, that's kind of a big step up in violence.

The very first scene I remember from an AA game was a girl being beaten to death by a small clock. I could easily see this series getting M now that it can do cutscenes beyond a few screens.

I just found out there is going to be a DLC to bridge the gap between AA5 and AA4,you have to defend a killer whale in court against a murder charge for Phoenix's first trial after getting his badge back, thoughts?

This could probably be merged into the bigger Ace Attorney thread

Defending a whale is the logical extrapolation of interrogating a parrot, I suppose. I figure a DLC case has to be of relatively little consequence to avoid having much impact on the game's plot one way or the other, and this would seem to fit the bill.

I think it's nice to know the DLC is coming to the US.

I don't like seeing a girl with a mustache like that

I saw FarFromSubtle playing it and that caused me to get the Ipad HD Trilogy,I don't own a DS anymore, though I am hopefully getting a 3ds for christmas so I can get the 5th game in the main series Dual Destinies when it is out in the UK,I haven't played AA4 though,so I might read up the cases at some point instead of having to get a DS then somehow a copy of that.

We know Pearl is in definitely no word about Maya though :(

Also Ema won't be in it I'm sure as they have a new detective called Bobby Fulbright.

It will be interesting to see the teenage Pearl that is going to appearing in the game.

Is anybody SUPER EXCITED else for Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney?
  • edited July 2013
Yeah!......Even though we still have not got any news of it coming out in other places than Japan.
  • edited July 2013
I know, I'm really hoping they will release it. Maybe around the time Ace Attorney 3DS comes out.

Gentlemen, start your complaining. The quiz DLC for Dual Destinies will NOT be coming westward. Why? Because it is incredibly Japanese, and requires a full working knowledge of Japanese culture and geography. That's actually incredibly reasonable, but considering that people got so worked up about the removal of hostess clubs from Yakuza 3, someone somewhere is going to complain.
  • edited July 2013
Wow, they must be incredibly lazy/hate making more money if they can't modify the questions for a Western audience.
  • edited July 2013
To be fair, if they did that, it would essentially be a completely different piece of DLC.

It's not quite the same as leaving out Professor Layton's London Life in Europe because they can't be bothered to translate the text into all the different languages (still narked about that).

I had actually forgotten about that. Thanks for reminding me!

Obviously the M rating is because this game will be a combination of Ace Attorney and L.A. Noire.

I'm pissed off about that as well. Would have loved to play a Professor Layton RPG but of course they didn't bother to put it in Europe, its even more annoying considering the name of the RPG is Professor Layton's London Life!

    I'm excited now

I watched the film yesterday, and it was much better than I expected it would be. Anyone else seen it?

But yeah, I'm pretty excited about Dual Destinies, but I hated Apollo Justice. I had to force myself to play it. Hopefully the new one will be more like the original trilogy.

Also, I wish they'd port the HD trilogy over to android.
