Idea for Nick in Future Episodes (SPOILERS)

edited March 2014 in The Walking Dead

Nick can die determinately in Episode 2. I did not know this at first, but I knew telling Walter if he was a good guy or not would be big, and it obviously was, as it decides whether he lives or dies. If you go with Pete at then end of Episode 1, Pete tells you "Would you promise to keep Nick safe? I love that stupid kid." It was Pete's dying wish for Clem to look after Nick and protect him, which is a hell of a task, as Nick gets into a lot of trouble sometimes and has latest been prone to Ben-esque mistakes. But I will so sol I can to protect Nick, Pete was my favorite character and I want to fulfill my wish and be faithful to everyone's favorite uncle. So here's my idea. Through each episode, or every other episode, there is a chance for Nick to die, and you have to pick certain choices or have things go a certain way for him to live on to the next episode. And each episode it would get harder and maybe less obvious if it was a "Nick's Fate" moment than it was with Walter in Episode 2. It will also see how faithful you are to Pete and the lengths you'll go to protect Nick and the group. And Nick will trust you more and more through each save, becoming a more positive and leader-type person less prone to silly mistakes and emotions. Maybe he'll even become more like his Uncle Pete

This would be a very interesting game mechanic and would define choice making in Telltale games, bringing it on a new level. It would also give Nick more character development each episode, and he already had a lot in episode 2. So far he's a very interesting character that's human and realistic. Some people love or hate him, but that just shows how human he is. If this choice mechanic is implemented, one persons tailored story could be drastically different than another's, adding much more replay ability.

I have ideas for some of "Nick choices" in future episodes. Examples:

Episode 3: Nick picks a fight with Carver. They fight and Carver managed to pin him to the ground, pummeling him to near-death, and Clementine had the option to intervene and stop Carver from killing him, as Carver would listen to her because it seems he wants her as his apprentice or "protege" of camp leader.

Episode 4: A war between Carver's camp and an opposing group (400 days characters who stayed?) occurs and Nick is shot in the stomach. Escort him to Carlos or help someone else. If you don't help him, he reds out and dies

Episode 5: The cold is harsh. Nick is separated from the group. You find him near-death and if you do to find a way to warm him or find him help within a certain time, he freezes to death.

Damn, I must think Nick has really bad luck, considering my examples :)

What do you think of this "Nick Fate" mechanic and would you like to see it implemented? Have any thoughts? Post below! :)

  • Picture up :)

  • Do you like this game mechanic?

  • I hope that if Walter saved him and if you didn't give up on him in the moonshiner's shed or whatever, it will inspire him to become a better person

  • Added some new info

  • Worked out perfectly with Ben -.-

  • Your right! It would be a cool game mechanic. As soon as Pete told me to watch over Nick my #1 priority is protecting him. Pete was my favorite from the cabin group and I will fulfill his wish and do whatever it takes to protect Nick! And damn Telltale really trolled me by making Pete say that... now Clementine is Lee and Nick is an older Clementine with a sprinkle of Ben on top. :D

I think it would be cool if there was a choice between saving Kenny and Nick. It would really test how far you will go to defend Nick. (I promised Pete so Nick all the way!!!)

  • I was thinking there would be a "Luke or Kenny" choice in a future episode because they have a Lilly vs. Kenny role this Season and both want Clementine to trust them more. But Nick and Kenny would be good too. And I laughed at "with a sprinkle of Ben" lol :D

  • This would definitely be a lot better than outright killing Nick in the next episode, now that he's determined status. I plan to stick to my promise to Pete and Nick has quickly become my favourite character of the cabin group.

  • Nick isn't Ben though, and he's already proved that by putting his own life on the line for the sake of being an honest person.

Worked out perfectly with Ben -.-

  • Agreed

  • So did Ben when he was telling Kenny the truth about what happened to his family. People just don't simply change over night. It's sad i know, but it's the truth.

  • Well, this isn't really saying anything new given the other posts in this thread, but damnit, I promised Pete too, so Nick is going to live in my game, despite himself. Goddamnit Pete, you might as well have asked me to walk on water while you were at it.

Nick told the truth right away, not after the guilt of the demise of half of the group that took him in became to much to bear. He also never blatantly lied about it to start with, or tried to keep it a secret.

Edit: I don't think decisions will lead Nick to become a better person; I already think he's a good person. I think otherwise about Ben.

  • To be honest, I think Nick is going to bite the dust next episode... I hope he doesn't, as doing so would make our promise to Pete worthless... but this is Telltale we're talking about. They'll probably look through the forums, see who is liked the most and put a bullet in the back of their heads.

  • Or walk "In the Water"

  • I had never really thought about it that way, nice idea. Kind of hoping he doesn't do anything stupid in the future though.. if he directly gets anyone in the group killed I'm through with him. He really doesn't seem like that big of a screw up though.

It depends on how you play the story...in my playthough Nick did lie about it. I told him to tell Walter the truth, but i told Walter that Nick is " Just like all the others " because in my eyes, that's how he is.

Damnit uncle Pete, i gave him that promise aswell. I will always feel guilty for not fulfilling his last wish, during my playthough.

Whoa, nice idea. Please work for Telltale! I want to have the ability to keep Nick alive as I like his character, but others would rather drop him at first chance, so this could possibly make everyone happy. And it'd definitely play up on our feels depending on whether we love or hate him.

This idea is great for everybody! If you hate Nick, he's gone! If you love Nick, he's there!

  • I really can imagine that telltale will something like this. I am only sad that I lost my Nick already. Why had I to stay silent, oh why?

  • Touche, but Ben hides the truth no matter what. Even if you are nice to him he still blatantly lies, and only tells the truth when he can't bear the guilt any longer. If you help Nick deal with his crisis he tries to do the right thing. The difference between Ben and Nick is that Ben lies to save his own skin no mater what, and Nick can continue to be a good person if he treated well during his darkest hour.

Also, their mistakes are on a whole different level. Ben is dishonest until it's much to late. He doesn't save Clem when she is surrounded. He doesn't look after her if you ask him to, he and pulls the axe out of a door that more than likely still had zombies behind it.

Nick shoots at Clem, whom he probably assumes is a walker when she first starts to move. He then runs away after running out of ammo and being surrounded, if you save Pete. If you don't he tries desperately to cover Pete. His last big mistake is shooting someone he assumes is either a bandit holding them up, or with Carver.

Ben was a lying coward. Nick has bad aim, and a concern for the safety of his group.

It depends on how you play the story...in my playthough Nick did lie about it. I told him to tell Walter the truth, but i told Walter that Nick is " Just like all the others " because in my eyes, that's how he is.

Fair enough...i still don't regret my decision.

By the way...there is also a great possibilty that Nick will make himself " usefull " during the next episode. Remember the " Petes watch " situation for example. Many people (me including) didn't take the watch, because it was stealing in their eyes and we already knew how badly that worked out in Season1. In Season1 Ben wasn't able to redem himself before his death, so maybe Nick can do that at the end!

  • It's a nice mechanic, I like it. The only 'problem' if it can even be called such is that like in ep 2, we might well not know how much of an effect a single sentence could make. eg: with the best will in the world to keep him alive, he might die due to events not of our desired making. My Nicks alive and I'll keep him alive as far as possible, but I'm betting that a fair few players lost him due to not expecting that one sentence to decide his fate.

  • Nick is already my favorite character in season 2, so I guess it would be a really cool mechanic

  • I didn't want to make you regret your decision, just presenting my viewpoint. I didn't take the watch either, because I didn't want to steal anything from them that wasn't medical supplies.

Well i don't regret my decision, but i am feeling guilty for not fulfilling uncle Petes last wish. Anyway, what's done can't be undone...that's how i play this game. No replays during my first playthough!

  • Same here, no rewinds in playthrough one.

    RIP Uncle Pete.

  • RIP good old uncle Pete, you deserved better! You'l be missed!

  • I've been thinking in the same areas and i believe that this should be more than enough reason to not just kill him off in the next episode because he could've died in the previous one. Make our choices matter BIG TIME, i'll wait several months for each episode if you put in all the extra work to actually make choices truly twist the story. I have trust in you, Telltale.

  • My favorite character from the season besides Nick. He was a great guy, and like you said, definitely deserved better.

  • I actually think that'd get tired pretty fast. I don't want to constantly worry about babysitting Nick.

  • Would he be in season 3?

  • That's the thing though! You don't have to if you don't want to!
