I'm just going to give a list of horror movies I like and that I suggest everyone watches:
Cabin in the Woods (Just watch it if you haven't)
Evil Dead (All of them are good, including the Remake, go for the first one (even if the first one is a bit goofy) or the Remake if you want straight up horror, 2 if you want a fun but over the top horror movie and Army of Darkness if you want straight up action and comedy with some horror themes)
Hellraiser (I've only seen the first one but it's really good)
Day of the Dead if you want Zombies, my favourite of all the zombie movies.
Trick r' Treat (A few short horror stories themed around Halloween I think it's really good.)
ParaNorman if you want a good horror themed cartoon.
Coraline (Same as ParaNorman)
The Others (If you want a good suspenseful ghost story)
The Devil's Backbone (My favourite Guillermo Del Toro movie, it's in Spanish though, but it's really good)
And yeah, I think those are my recommendations for now.

I never understood why Coraline was ever intended to be a kid's movie 0.o
I remember that when I first watched it (and I was like 12, 13 or something), it scared the shit out of me. Not in a nice, funny way, but it was really horrifying and no fun at all.
Same goes for Monster House, that was (and still is) some scary shit.
Coraline is amazing though, I was 17 when it came out though, and when I was a kid I absolutely loved horror movies so if it had actually scared me the same way it scared you I would have loved it, some kids like scary creepy stuff, heck I would have been all over TWD game if it had been released when I was 11, probably even liked it more than now since you know Clementine is 11.
As for Monster House, well I never watched that, I probably should some time.
Watched Evil Dead 2 a few days ago for the first time, perfect time to share these 2spookeh gifs.

SPOILERS and yes, it's best if you don't know that before watching it, anyway it's more like a deconstruction of your typical Horror movie than an actual horror movie but it's really good.
