LucasArts next SE?

edited February 2010 in General Chat
I really like the classic MI remake with the great features as the classic mode and everything. But what comes after it? there are so many games which could be repainted the way they're doing it with MI.

So what would you like to see as the next SE version and why?

(I hope I didn't forget one)

Edit: Oh yeah, I was dumb enough to put in SoMI, maybe a mod could delete it from the list and maybe change it so everyone is able to pick 3 games?

Not full throttle, it's perfect for what it is.

I think for completion and because it is simply great i pick MI2. After that I'd like to see Fate of Atlantis, Maniac Manson and Day of the Tentacle redone. DotT already has some more pixels compared to monkey island so there they simply hav to do exactly the same style as the original one, just in hd.

Maniac Mansion 1 all the way!
  • edited June 2009
There seems to be no option to pick all of them. :-) Regardless, you forgot to put Full Throttle on there.

Vollgas full throttle; Which I am Guessing is the german title

A lot of the LucasArts games hold up extremely well graphicially. For example, Hit the Road's style visually really doesn't require an update, it just looks really nice even today because it's a cartoon.

I'd love to see Loom revisited, especially with the chance of revival as a series.

Speaking personally I would play the crap out of that. I'm playing through Loom for the first time (since my false-start when I was like 7), and it's amazing. Unfortunately, unless I'm mistaken, there is no one currently in this office I can high five for working on this game.

You can have a high five from me, but it won't be the same.
Loom is an epic adventure, i just love Bobin's voice in the full audio version. The lack of ambition to have made the trillogy upsets me.

If I worked at Telltale I'd probably stand up and say "HEY! Did anybody here work on Loom?!" The minute the thought occurred to me.

The ones that need updates the most are the ones lacking voice overs. Of these - and considering how odd it would be to have all the other games except MI2 with voice overs - I think MI2 should get the next special edition. If there is more. Hopefully.

According to the Tales of Monkey Island team list, Joe Pinney worked on Loom as a tester. :p

I voted for Maniac Mansion (it's the game that most needs a remake; it's barely playable in its current form, for me anyway), but the the way Ghost Pirate LeChuck looks in the SoMI remake gives me high hopes for how Zombie Pirate LeChuck could look in an MI2 remake. Their sketches of "old man Guybrush" are pretty promising as well.

I voted for Sam and Max Hit the Road because I was surprised to see that not one single person voted for that game. And on a forum filled with Sam and Max fans, no less!

    I don't understand...

It's due to the fact that it has aged very well.

LOOM! Doesn't need replacement of voice acting though, the voice actors did a fine job.. perhaps just reinstating the deleted audio (which oddly is still on the cd just not in the game.. buh?)
But a revival of it as a series would make my... well.. millennia. It is after all, my favourite game ever, alongside Planescape Torment heheh.

Hit the road and DOTT are fine as is, sure it's a bit pixally but it's fine and not that ugly to look at.

Maniac mansion got a facelift from some fans didn't it?

Zak Mackracken could be interesting to see reskinned, but I don't really think any of the games NEEDED a facelift. I'm undecided about the facelift of Monkey Island. I just finished playing the original and it's fine... voice acting is nice though.

Monkey Island 2 is the obvious answer - it is going to seem out of place once MI1 Special Edition is released.

As for Maniac Mansion, it is already done.

I don't know that any of these games necessarily need the full special edition treatment with repainted HD graphics and everything, but at the very least they all need to be re-released and made readily playable on modern PCs and consoles.

Edit: And, yes, I know all about ScummVM and eBay, but it would still be great if these games were still in print in some form and sold by LucasArts...

That's the great thing about the SE versions, that you're able to switch back whenever you want.

I wouldn't mind any one of them to be honest except Day of the Tentacle, because I think it looks, sounds and plays absolutely perfectly. Maybe the only thing to change would be a higher quality voice and sound effect track, but NOTHING ELSE!:)

Besides MI2 (which EVERYONE seems to be picking), I think a good choice for practicality would be Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It's a character everyone's aware of and one of the first computer games of its character. It would be easy enough to remake as there is no iMuse system and the graphics aren't hand-painted (much like SOMI) like they were for laetr LA games (MI2, FOA). The only reason I didn't choose Fate of Atlantis was because it's already been rereleased (sort of) as a bonus on the Wii version of Staff of Kings.

Another option might be Loom or maybe even Maniac Mansion. Though I think the existence of dead ends might make that one a bad choice. Maybe.
  • edited June 2009
Actually, I wouldn't mind a remake (or SE) of any of them.
  • edited June 2009
I voted for Loom... Re-orchestrated and with hi-res graphics. Voices are fine as they are I think.
Then, of course, TTG could complete the series!! ;)

MI2 would be sweet as well but that's a tricky one for me. Graphics are great as they are, problem is just the resolution and restricted colour palette they're in. They'd have to dig up the old hand drawn backgrounds (if they still exist) or maybe get Purcell to come back to work. :p It just wouldn't be the same without.

Oh, and The Dig would be... Eh... You know what? Screw it. All of them.. Do all of them!! :D
  • edited June 2009
The Dig is great, I played it about 2 years ago for the first time. I'm a big fan of scifi, especially if it is not about wars against aliens but making contact, getting to know alien culture and history.
  • edited June 2009
Every time I think of The Dig I liken it to Star Trek Voyager for some reason. Maybe it's because the wrecked ship reminds me of the crashed USS Raven, which was the ship Seven of Nine and her parents were on when they were documenting the Borg before they got assimilated.

It reminded me of X-Files because Maggie got in germany the same synchron-voice as Scully. :)

how can you say no to full throttle. i want to see it run new fresh again. May i Remind you there was to be a Full Throttle 2 Game released awile ago.... Had you seen the Full Throttle 2 Trailer Ever. Yes Fullthrottle. Vote FullThrottle 2 for 09'

My first vote is Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge because I want to hear voices, not because the game isn't otherwise perfect as it is (because it is perfect, just it needs voices). After that, I actually want them to do a un-make of Escape from Monkey Island to make it more in line with the 2D versions. Keep the voices, just make it less...3D. Ugg, I've never been able to even finish that game or Grim just because the 3D is done soo badly.

Concerning SCUMM games, Fate of Atlantis could definitely use a graphic boost and a music clean-up, even though the game is excellent. Last Crusade could use the same, and I think it needs speech too, but I don't remember. The Dig, DOTT, S&M and Full Throttle I think are fine just as they are. I wouldn't mind a sequel to DOTT, but I'm not sure if I'd like a Telltale episodic sequel.

That leaves LOOM, Maniac Mansion, & Zak: LOOM I'd love to see cleaned up and expanded into its intended trilogy. I always felt that the game was lacking the depth that it was intended to possess and I think now is a great time to expand the series to cover that depth. Maniac Mansion and Zak have both received fan updates and, personally, those seem to work just fine for me. I never much liked either game that much, possibly because they were the oldest, and I'm fine with them not getting updates. I'd, however, DOTT gets an update, I'd really like to see Maniac Mansion get an overhaul to bring it in line with DOTT and make the two seem like an ACTUAL duology, instead of the loosely connected duology that they currently are.

That abomination was not an adventure game and LucasArts was right to cancel it as they knew full well they were going to disappoint older fans with it. Sam & Max 2, on the other hand....

Unfortunately, they never made Full Throttle 2 or Sam & Max 2, although they had official press releases but both were canceled. I do seem to remember a trailer for FT2, but it was never made. I do hope that, years later now, they decided to make and release these ancient canceled sequels. Monkey Island 5 was also heavily rumoured through possibly official channels around 2001, but those proved to be nothing official. We can all hope that LucasArts, realizing that 90% of their games over the last 10 years have...well...been poorly made, are returning to their roots and making not just remade, but new adventure games.

P.S. Can I hear it for TIE Fighter 2!? Woot woot!

Exactly they need to return to their roots but then enhanced that material for the updates computers and counsels.

I really want SE's for Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Monkey Island 2, Loom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. But more importantly I just want all the games re-released compatible with newer systems.

SE's should be done for the games that need the most improvement. Maniac, Zak, Monkey Island 2 and Last Crusade need a SE BADLY. Where as games like DOTT, Sam & Max, Fate of Atlantis, The Dig, Full Throttle are pretty great the way they are. The graphics may be a little dated but other then that everything is great the way it is. Let LucasArts re-release those games and let them focus on the games they can update the most for the newer generation of gamers.

Imagine Zak or Maniac Mansion with full voice, sound, music and High-Res graphics. Plus with these games they could add stuff they couldn’t before such as "Look At" or "Talk to" commands. It would be awesome.

    ^ Wishful thinking. :-)

I guess ScummVM is as close as we'll get to playing a SE of these games for now.

I've had some experience with SCUMM and speech... If the voice files are already there, there's a good chance I can re-add them.

Trouble is, I don't own a Loom CD. Or a copy of Loom at all for that matter.

    I've never played Loom!

The CD version of Loom's sound effects, music, and speech were all on a single redbook audio track. There are no speech files.

Monkey Island 2 and Fate of Atlantis have identical graphics. They're probably the most alike out of all the games. And I actually think MI2 looks better than FOA. You really think MI2 needs the SE over FOA? (graphics-wise not want-wise)

Fate has VO, MI2 does not.
  • edited June 2009
Ah yes, true. An interesting note, however, is that the disk version of FOA had no digital sound effects while MI2 did even though it was made first.

While I would love to see a remake of Monkey Island 2, the fact that they kept in "Ask me about Loom" suggests that Loom is next.

I thought FOA lacked VO at all at first - but then they added it later.
  • edited June 2009
Yeah, probably. That's probably when they added in sound effects as well. My point was the MI2 was made first and it has digital sound effects while strangely FOA does not. Just a odd design choice, IMO. If they had the ability why didn't they use it? Just an interesting observation.
