After playing through SoMI special edition i'm a bit disappointed with the new artwork. It looks hurried, and just basically rubbish. I would have liked to have had the option of playing with old school graphics while keeping the new voice dialogue.

When Lechucks Revenge gets remade, which ofc i would like to see, please include that as an option. Sort of, F9 to turn on the new dialogue and F10 to change the gfx.

Hmmm. I don't seem to have replied here yet.

+1 for MI2:SE. I'd love to be able to play it with voices. Updated graphics and music is a bonus.

There seems to be a lot of contention over the "wimpy" voice-over of dominic armato, especially for an expected se: sequel to SOMI. I think we've almost forgotten that charm Guybrush Threepwood has provided us for almost 20 years now, and with Armato filling in that previously muted part, we've really stuck to him (well I have) like glue to rubber.

And I think namely why that wimpish voice has stuck to the character is due to the character's pursuit to be a "mighty pirate". So quintessentially Guybrush is a wimpish character, it would be inconceivable to change voice-actors halfway through this reprised classic. Most especially as we relive the adventures of our beloved protagonist stuggling futilely to have his name recognised as a synonym for "mighty pirate" rather than LeChuck's, whilst getting the girl.

So don't change the voices PLEASE, it was a mistake of Telltale not to press for the return of our iconic voice-overs like LeChuck and Stan, and we don't want that to happen as we have seen countlessy with second-rate sequels.

Agreed, all of it, times ten

I'm ashamed to say I've never played this game :( So yes. Though I agree the art in SoMI:SE blew and if they did this, they better do a MUCH better job with the artwork (no buzzcuts for Guybrush please!)

I will get around to playing SOMI SE in the new year, I want something Monkey Islandish to play.

I have the first two originals but can't get them to work on my PC, keeps saying disk needs formatting, but there original?

I have spend some £ trying to get a combo that works from e-bay but to no avail.

All I need is for Lucasarts to come up with LCR SE and then Ill be done.

Only got the originals because I never had them first time round back in 1990 I only had copy's back then.

    Here's to LCR SE.

I personally have a lot more faith in Telltale's capability to make good Monkey Island games than the Lucasarts of today.
The Mi1 remake felt rushed and even a little amateurish at times to me. The horrible artwork made it look like a flash game.
It's a real shame you can't use the voices when you switch over to the old art.

I just pray they've got the point and will include that option if they remake Mi2.

I'm not even sure I'd want a full on huge Monkey Island retail game if Lucasarts are going to make it. They should hire Telltale to make it and pay them handsomely for the job :)

I thought the new art looked beautiful, especially on a powerful computer. The voice acting, on the other hand, was bland and uninteresting. The cast is fantastic, but all the lines were read with no emotion. In ToMI and Curse, Dominic made it very clear when Guybrush was joking or being serious, but in Secret: Special Edition, he gave no such indication. I have no doubt that Dominic knows the Secret of Monkey Island in and out, but for some reason he just didn't provide a great performance for the special edition.

It's not just Dominic, however. All of the voice acting in the Special Edition was bland. Maybe they were rushed for time, I don't know. I payed money for a game that I have already bought however, and the voice acting and improved graphics were not worth the price.

The only thing them to do is like mi1 I'd like is voices. I had no problems with the old graphics at all. I have trouble seeing them do the library section listing all the books with speech. Maybe they could list that as text cause that would take a long time, and you only need a few books.

I was dissapointed of the visual side of SoMI:SE.
    Lazy Animations (3D-Guybrush, c’mon).
Lazy Backgrounds (They are just »Draw high resolution on top of Low resolution«, and the sad thing is that you sometimes see the pixels through. The only creative and beautiful one is this scene:
    the-secret-of-monkey-island-special-edition.jpg)
Just lazyness! (Guybrush-sprite in front of an object that should be in the foreground, or the map of Monkey Island: Copy+Pasted palmtrees everywhere!)

This kills a game for me, I cannot find the passion of LA doing that project.
I haven’t finished it because of these things. No atmosphere. Music and Voice are very great though.
That’s why I’m afraid of an LeChucks Revenge Special Edition. What if the Tunnel-Scene is not scary anymore? What if they use the EfMI-Zombie-LeChuck?? Yikes!

what im gunna miss is when they do the special edition of Monkey island 2, the expressions on guybrush's face.....like when he sticks a dog down his pants, or when he pulls lechucks underwear and sticks his tougue out in disgust, and when he tries to spit and it dribbles down, and his eyes go wide ....thats all going to be lost if they re-do it

    Bring it on!!
I'll buy it at least twice!! :)

Sorry but I'm totally against a MI 2 special edition !

Look at Runaway 3 for god sake !!!

"Special edition" are lame and lazy. The animation and arts of MI 2 are just too beautiful. If they're just gonna "repaint" with bad arts over it and just ruin all the animation and thus, the ambiance and fun of the game, I'm against.

Full remake OK, but not a special edition. MI 2 deserves so much better that what the first one got. I'm against it.

Ok the voice adding would be cool, but if that ruins all the charm of the game at the same time... Not sure I want that. And I don't care about a mode "add voice without new arts". Although I would love them in a remake, I think that if I have to play the old version of MI 2, it's as good without voice acting. And actually, as they stated before, a lot of lines will feel weird when said out loud.

Seriously think about the skelingtkon dance with the lame animation or actually any single scene ! They will never give enough effort to respect the animation correctly.

And actually, I love Tell Tale's design, but I preferred the "realistic" ones from MI 1 and 2, I thought it just felt great. When I looked at the cover art I always felt "the dream comes true". So once jumping to the cartoonish style, it's OK but what they made with SE is just horrible. It's not really cartoonish, and the face of Guybrush (and Elaine) were so beautiful in the first one ! Now they look like crap in the SE. So if Telltale wasn't around, I would probably want it because I would be lacking MI games.

But it's not the case, we have a perfect sequel with Tales of Monkey Island, it's enough. I don't want Lucasarts to just ruin the second one in order to make money.

I don't really care if the art is as "lazy" as SoMI: SE. (which I didn't really mind, though it would be great if they spend more time on it) As long as it has voice-acting and the ability to switch to the old version at the press of a button like the other did, I do want it to be made.

This. I actually want to own the game. Though I do wish I could own the original boxed version. :(
  • edited December 2009
    I already own the game.

I just don't MI 2 to get raped. Adding voice acting just isn't worth it, but that's just my opinion.

Especially after seeing those "super uber special edition" videos, I would cry for days if MI 2 got what MI 1 got.

I loved the MI1 special edition, so yes, I'd really like to see the same treatment done to MI2. I really don't get where the hate is coming from or claims of laziness. Huh?

    I loved SMI:SE
  • edited December 2009
Absolutely, yes. SMI: SE wasn't perfect, but that doesn't mean that the developers aren't going to improve on its flaws for LCR. As long as they can make the characters seem more substantial (it felt like they were gliding around as opposed to walking in the SE) and give the voice over the pep that Tales had, it could be awesome. I'd just love to have Guybrush voiced by Dom Armato for the whole series.

just reading your post, i totally agree with what you say, also to note what is runaway like....ive seen the covers to it at work, and it looked interesting...is it worth getting?

I want a special edition so I can have a legal version to play. Yes the "special edition" part of the special edition was ... sub par to say the least, but if the original game is included untouched that's good enough. And maybe LA will learn their lesson and make the voice acting optional in the original mode? I thought the VA was pretty good, actually; it's the only reason I played half in one mode half in the other.
  • edited December 2009
I would love it. Or a steam release. I haven't played it yet.
  • edited December 2009
I totally aprove the idea of a remake more than a "special edition" (the must would be a kit "old version + remake" to me) even if I enjoyed playing SOMI:SE.

I didn't play MI4, that I really disliked graphically... if there's a remake in the same style of ToMI, that would make my day :)
  • edited December 2009
I'd buy it for the voice acting and music. Those are my favourite things about SMI:SE. Visually, MI2 is impressive, especially for it's time, so they'd have to come up with some amazing graphics to make that side of it worthwhile.

Even just a talkie version of MI2 would probably be great.
  • edited December 2009
I certainly wouldn't play a SE instead of the original version. I'd like to see LucasArts sell the old Monkey Island games again, though.
  • edited December 2009
I would buy it if it had 3 versions.
    1. Original Version
    2. Special Edition
    3. Original Version with voices.

I loved the SE backgrounds, it were the characters which were not so good (cept for LeChuck).
  • edited December 2009
    So here's an idea:

We all know that, properly done, a remake of MI2 would be awesome....

This is probably a pipe dream, but what if Telltale were to re-make Monkey 2 using the Telltale Tool, the same game engine used for ToMI? Trying to keep the essence of the original backgrounds as much as possible, of course! But they could use some of the cinematic elements in cutscenes or conversations that have been done so well in Tales...

Or maybe this would be way too much work and they would never ever do it...
  • edited December 2009
I don't understand why a lot of people didn't like the SE of MI1. The only character design that looked slightly off to me was Guybrush, but he didn't look THAT off. The game plays exactly the same, but with voices and updated graphics. How exactly is it "lazy" "subpar" or "lacking respect"?

Sometimes I think a lot of fans just love the originals too much that any changes is seen as a negative thing. This goes for all things across all mediums.

that would be terrible imo. their game engine could never do justice to the artwork and atmosphere.

Ok, it's mainly artwork, the character designs are, well, rather rubbish, the backgrounds when fully done are great, but there are many backgrounds that were rushed and still contain the original pixels upscaled (Melee Island Forest) and some glaring graphical glitches that are not even in the original game (Scumm Bar Loose Board, Monkey Island Canyon Vultures vanishing), there are mods out there that correct these noticed issues done by fans, one that even adds the smiley face back to the Scumm Bar sign. So really it's those reasons that it comes off as Lazy, plus in the console version, you can't change the text speed, so the voices are always stuck with that awkward silence.
  • edited December 2009
    sure why not
  • edited December 2009
the two things i didn't like the most about the SE were

    1) the character designs were noticeably less funny and had less character, and often veered far off the original character's iconic features (which were often just funny to look at, such as the sword fighting pirates), as well the speaking animations weren't as spittle-infused and such.

    2) the verb/inventory mechanic was very annoying on PC to me. it look several steps or key-strokes just to bring them up, and then they'd cover the screen. it really wasn't an improvement. i liked the full screen play, but the mouse-system should've been more simple and stream-lined (i really don't understand why designers insist on trying new things with this all the time. a number of old standards works fine.)

also, just as an old-school AG'er, i never find voice acting as funny as just the text (with the voices in my head reading it). to me the jokes translate to that brief text style best, and don't really come across as well with dramatic voice acting. that's just me though (i realize voice acting is kind of a necessity these days)
  • edited December 2009
how are the character designs rubbish? I can understand maybe not liking them as much as the pixel characters, but rubbish? Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I think it's a bit unfair to say the game sucked based on a few incredibly minor details.

I'm not so sure... I thought one of the strong suits of Tales was the atmosphere, especially from Chapter 3 onward. Sure, the scenes might need to be a little more complicated than those in Tales to really reflect the artwork of MI2, but the thieves' den in Tales chapter 5 showed that the engine is more than capable of rendering busier, more item-filled scenes when necessary. And we've already seen that the artwork can be converted into 3D while still doing it justice--just look at those "special uber-edition" videos.

    Here's one.
I didn't really like the Special Edition of Monkey Island 1.
It looked really sloppy. Like they didn't put enough time in it.
The only thing I thought I'd like were the voices, but even they don't add any value to the game.
It's just a pity and I wouldn't like to see Le Chuck's Revenge ruïned like this too.

^ this is the thing I disliked about it. They should have made it invisible and then when you move the pointer to the bottom of the screen the whole range of icons fade in along the bottom. Scrolling through the options just doesn't work as well as the old system.

I'd sort of like to see a Special Edition, having the background art in higher quality would be nice, the music however, is a tough call, Lucasarts redone the music for the first game with what I assume without any input from Land or Clint, and, I can't explain it, but the soundtrack doesn't feel true to the style, at least compared to what we've got in Tales with Land's Score. The soundtrack in LR is brilliant as it is.

Apart from the artwork, I wouldn't like to see their take on the characters in the game, the only reason left really is for the voices, which would be nice to hear, but only if we get an option to have it on the old game too (which we should of with SMI).
