    Part 9/12

    Alara: District 7

My magnificent stylist (and I say magnificent loosely) has outdone herself this time. Yet another tree costume, this is the twentieth year and they haven’t changed anything. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining, at least I’m not in some tacky flower themed dress, and the fabric is loose and flowing in a pale brown color, it was pretty good.

“What do you think?” My stylist smiles, she’s already gushing in the compliment I’ll have to force out.

“It’s… nice.” I say, who was I to judge? The poor girl from district seven who has never once cared about her outfits. It was probably nice for the Capitol people, I’ve noticed they had an odd sense of style, they look like they’re dressed in costumes everyday.

“You don’t love it.” She makes a face I can only assume to be a pout. Here in the Capitol they could have plastic surgery to look younger, thinner, more desirable. It was a little frightening, especially when overdone. I do love the makeup though, just a little highlighting and red eyeliner that makes me look fearsome.

“No, no, I do love it.” I assure her. Obviously the Capitol people have never heard of being strong for someone. There I stood, comforting her while I would have to fight for my life tomorrow.

About an hour later, We’re lined up district by district. First the female, then the male. That makes me what, thirteenth? I take a seat near the middle.

This year, Caesar has freakish orange hair as bright as the fruit, his lips and eyelids are coated in the same odd color. Caesar jokes with the audience a little but soon after, gets down to business. The girl from one steps up center stage, she’s in a lacy white dress that’s coated in diamonds. It’s clear what angle she’ll be playing up, surely her monstrous eleven will be mentioned throughout the interview. Her looks, bouncing blonde hair, pure blue eyes, were just an added plus for sponsors.

Each interview only last three minutes. Then a buzzer goes off and the next tribute is up. I don’t know how I’m going to pull this off. People I’ve known for years don’t even know me! And the people closest to me will probably tell you my bad qualities. Sassy, irritable, bitter. I want to run, run outside and take a deep breath that I haven’t had since I’ve been reaped.

The buzzer rings for the girl from one, her partner shows up. Their stylist has caked him in makeup to hide the scars on his face, bad move; he’ll be unrecognizable in the games.

One by one, I realize that each tribute is playing up an angle. The boy and girl from two are ruthless killers. The girl from four is tearing up, but that’s not really an angle. The boy from five is mysterious that leaves the audience wanting more. The girl from five is silent through the entire interview, only nodding her head up or down. The boy from six goes up after the girl from six. He talks about himself exactly once, during the reapings, and then moves on to his tribute partner. Sasha. He’s actually very convincing, if I wasn’t in the games, I’d say he could make me root for her.

Then, they’re calling for Alara Morrow. That’s me I have to tell myself. I make my way up center stage. I don’t wait for my name to be called up again like in reapings. I quickly make my way center stage, making sure not to hike my dress up as my escort taught me. It feels like an out of body experience as I stand there. Caesar Flickerman stands in front of me, in the same midnight blue suit with thousands of tiny lights that shine like the stars in the night. I shake his outstretched hand. He says something but the words don’t register in my head, he may as well be speaking a different language.

“Come. Sit down.” He gestures. The crowd is filled with laughter. You idiot! I think to myself as I take a seat. Without speaking I’ve already made myself look like an idiot.

“So Ms. Ten.” He crosses his legs and I copy. “Which I must say is no easy feat.” He turns to the crowd, they start applauding. It was a good thing for the Caesar, he might actually help make me memorable. Turning a weak response, great with his response, or a lame joke into a good one. I was grateful in a sort. “How is Capitol life treating you?”

Oh no. Blight never told me what angle I should go for, he stormed out and said I was unsaveable. Ouch still hurts now. This question I could answer any way but I’ve watched some of the interviews, Caesar’s going to turn up the heat and I’ll be here frozen.

There’s lots of ways this could go. My first reaction is to act hostile, why shouldn’t I? They may have just sentenced me to death. Or I could be a goody-goody and be the nice girl. Or I could be charming, how hard could it be? Or myself, that’d be easy to pull off, but I don’t know how likeable I’ll be.

[Be humble] [Be flirty] [Be charming] [Be hostile] [Be yourself]

Ah, I don't kow. I guess this determines her amount of sponsors. I guess any of these options could be good or bad, so I'll go with her being herself, for the same reason as AAA_Jane. After all, I guess she just needs to give Caesar something to work with and when she is herself, she might be relaxed enough to put emphasis on her positive traits. With her family and stuff, the Capitol people might like her enough to sponsor her something. I mean, Capitol people love stuff like that, right? Being flirty could also be good, but I wouldn't trust Alara with pulling of a convincing flirt.

    Part 10/12

    Cheyenne: District 10

I’m put in a lilac dress that descends to my knees, it puffs like a cupcake. The shoulders are designed in beautiful jewels. I’m stunned, I’ve never been in clothes so rich. Two pieces of hair on the sides of my head are intricately braided and converge into a ponytail, expertly done by my stylists. I still look myself, I don’t even think I’m wearing makeup, my stylist said I need to have a recognizable face in the games.

Six, seven, eight. They roll on by. The girl from seven is a natural, Alara I heard someone call her. She’s radiant, glowing and manages to tell a funny joke here and there. When Caesar asks her about life back home she doesn’t miss a beat. “It’s a struggle. We all smell like pine there.” Which sends the crowd into immediate laughter, she’s among the favorites.

Several minutes afterwards, the boy from nine has walked onto stage in a wheat colored suit. From the beginning it’s easy to tell what angle he’s playing up. He’s trying his best to be friendly, likely because of his low training score. Caesar Flickerman, our host for the interview has been hosting for the past twenty years now. And looks hasn’t changed one bit, even wearing the same midnight blue gown that sparkled like stars in the night. The only exception from this is his hair color which he changes every year in the festivity of the games. His hair color is as orange as the fruit suggests.

After three minutes the buzzer dings. With the help of Caesar Flickerman, the boy manages to make a memorable impression. If I could say one thing about Caesar it’s that he tries to help each tribute out in the interviews. The audience is clapping, even some of the tributes clap along. Not me, not when I’m next. Next thing I know they call Cheyenne Wells and I’m pushed center stage, not literally but I do need help with the first steps because I’m so nervous.
I shake Caesars outstretched hand. He lightly squeezes it, not wanting to squish my tiny hand

    .
“So Cheyenne. I’m to be completely honest with you,” He pauses. Oh no, what does he mean by that? “when I read your score, I did a double take. An eight? So you’re going to be a major threat these games. Am I right?”

I let out a giggle, bubbly, bright, not typical of me. Against all odds, I manage to steady my voice when I speak. “No, I’m a hider, not much of a fighter.” I can’t help but smile.

“I’m sure that’s not true.” Caesar gives my hand a squeeze. “You must have some secret tactic.”

“If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret, would it?” Yet another giggle emerges, I hear some laughter and claps in the audience. Caesar has to settle them down.

“Let’s go back to the day of the reapings.” Caesar’s voice drops, he suddenly becomes ore serious. “I think when we all first saw your reapings, we were all moved. Deeply moved. Can you explain why you volunteered?” The crowds voice is dropped to complete silence. Gripping onto every word I say.

My breath is light, and suddenly the anxiety returns. It’s a good thing I’m sitting down or I might pass out. I take a deep breath and the words just come as I speak. “I-I told her I’d win for her. She’s sick, so if I win, she’ll get the medicine she’s been needing. She’s all I have left. And I’m all she has left.”

“And after the reapings, what did she say to you?” I can feel the audience hang on to my every word. Oh no, this is too, too personal. But I can’t stop now, not when I’ve done so well! “We didn’t say much. She gave me a hug and… gave me her rabbit’s foot. It’s lucky.” Caesar’s visibly saddened. He wipes away the tears from his eyes. The buzzer goes off and he gives a subtle thumbs up.

“Well I’m afraid that’s all the time we have with this lovely girl. Cheyenne Wells, your district ten tribute!”

The crowd is cheering long after I'm seated. I can't help but smile as when I go backstage. “Ugh. You look ridiculous.” The catty girl from district one, Satina says as she walks past me. I say nothing. I already know she doesn’t like me after the stunt I pulled during training. You're just jealous I want to say, but that's probably not true. She's pretty, the Capitol loves her and she got the highest score. I don’t want to dare to say anything though, I'm already one of the biggest targets to the careers apparently.

  • So glad Alara did well in the interviews. She's simply the best when she does not act like someone she isn't :) And I'm so glad Cheyenne did well too. That might boost their chances for a nice sponsor. For a Capitol guy, Caesar might be a real lifesaver.

    [Stay silent]

As much as I'd love for her to talk back at this damn career, she can't afford it, she's already too big of a target. Hater's gonna hate anyways and Satina is simply a spoiled brat who probably wouldn't be impressed by anything Cheyenne could say.
