  • Sprinkle Tigerson, 15 - District One

“Sprinkle, come help me with my hair,” Diamond orders, “I need to look gorgeous for the reaping. Of course I’m going to volunteer so everyone in the Capitol needs to see how beautiful I am!” A faint giggle escapes her mouth afterwards. “Don’t worry, when you’re 18 – and I’m a victor – I’ll help you to look pretty too!” She smiles at me. Usually I would argue back with Diamond, but I’m going to get back at her in a different way today.

My mother calls us down, saying that we’re leaving soon. Diamond and I finish preparing ourselves quickly and walk downstairs and out with our parents.

“Oh, Ruby, over here!” Diamond waves over her boyfriend of 2 years and he strolls over, with his parents following. Ruby pulls Diamond in and wraps his arms around her, trying to kiss her neck. “Ruby, not here, my family are watching!” She giggles and shoves him off gently. Diamond compliments Ruby’s teal blue suit and she twirls before asking him what he thinks of her golden, shimmering dress. I grind my teeth in annoyance, but I remember that I’m going to teal my sister’s thunder.

As we all reach the Justice Hall, we separate, Ruby and my parents staying at the back, with the other parents, Ruby to the 18 year old male section, Diamond to the 18 year old female section and me with the other 15 year old girls. I notice some of my friends, but I’m not in the mood for them; not today.

“Hello and welcome everybody!” Our escort chirps, “Drianna Ecklans here to host the District 1 reaping once again!” She beams, striking an adorable pose before continuing. “Let’s start with our manly men!” Drianna winks before striding to the left side of the stage. As she picks up the tiny note with a boy’s name on, she squirms in excitement and returns to the microphone.

“Topan Lazuli!” She booms into the microphone. Someone from the back, presumably from the 18 year olds, shouts that he volunteers. I turn my head curiously and see Ruby confidently walk towards the stage. Behind me, I see Diamond’s eye twitch and lip curl. She mustn’t have known that he was going to volunteer.

“My name is Ruby Lascius,” he says, smiling charmingly. Drianna congratulates him and continues on with the reaping, now ready to select a female’s name. This won’t be fun anymore. Diamond’s not going to volunteer and I can’t ruin her life. Ruby already did that.

“Diamond Tigerson!” Our escort once again reveals. Diamond protests and waits for someone to volunteer, however, no one does. I roll my eyes and announce that I volunteer and calmly walk to the stage. From the stage I can see Diamond’s eyebrows furrow in confusion. This is perfect. I can kill Ruby and devastate Diamond. I’m going to enjoy these Games. Drianna asks me what my name is and I steadily say Sprinkle Tigerson.

Everyone in the crowd cheers and applauds as Ruby and I enter the Justice Hall. I’m not waiting long before my parents and Diamond enter. “Oh, honey, we’re so proud of you and Diamond is so thankful – we love you,” my mother stutters, “she can do this, right, Glitter?” My mother directs to my father and he nods his head and grips my hands. Diamond is behind them, quiet with shock, probably. She thought this was going to be her year, but it’s going to be mine. “Diamond, do you have anything to say to your sister?”

Diamond’s eyes begin tearing as she flings her arms around me and squeeze me tightly. “I’m so sorry for being mean to you!” What an understatement... She mocked me about everything, like how she was always smarter or better at training. She even tried to make me believe mom and dad preferred her, which I still believe. “Please, please, please forgive me and win!”

Let me know if I can improve in anyway, I know it's a little short, but I'll try to lengthen them as the story goes on.

  • That was a great first part! I like your writing, it's really good. Only thing you could maybe improve in would be describing the characters looks, but other than that I loved it!

    [Hug her back]

It's probably the last time they'll see each other, so I think they should part ways on good terms.

That was a great first part! But I think Diamond and Sprinkles uneasy relationship should've been told earlier. And maybe lengthen the reaping process. Other than that it's great.

Preferred weapon: His intelligence and his speed

  • Zachary Termain, 16 - District 2

I wake to the sun peeking through my lazily closed curtains and blaring into my eyes. Squinting, I turn my head away from the bright light and see my brother, who almost looks exactly like me. From our similar short, black hair to the hazel eyes. However, Winstone is slightly more buff than me, being 3 years older.

“What’s up, bro?” He asks and then drenches me with water in a bucket. I grind my teeth and jump out of my bed before chasing him away. Though he may be 19, he will never be a grown up. He never wanted to volunteer, never wanted to bring honour to our family. My parents pretend to be proud of him, but I know they’re not.

Leaving my room, I walk to the bathroom to dry my hair. Today is the reaping and I can’t decide if I want to volunteer. I want to because my parents will undoubtedly prefer me to my bully of a brother, but I recall my friend Ferris revealing he was considering to do so – to impress some girl, I think. I ruffle my hair with a towel and style it in the mirror, slicking it back.

“Zachary, are you nearly done?” My mother calls from the bottom of the stairs. Without answering, I return to my room and throw on a tight, burgundy shirt and some black, skinny trousers. The Capitol should love this.

Downstairs, I find my mother in the kitchen and she grins at me. “There’s my strong little boy,” she cries, pulling me into a comfortable embrace. Honestly, although I want to volunteer for my parent’s affection, I wouldn’t mind killing some outlying District peasants, to shatter all of their hope. I remember as a child, my mother told me she nearly volunteered for the Games, for the 29th I believe, but she didn’t, not because she was afraid to kill, she informed me that I should never be afraid to kill, but because she met my father two weeks before and she didn’t want to leave him. Luckily, I don’t have a girlfriend to get in the way of winning the Hunger Games. Me, my parents and Winstone exit out of our house and begin walking to the reaping.

“Volunteering this year, my boy?” My father asks proudly. I shrug and smile at him and see Winstone glaring at me. My father pats me on my back and chuckles with me. “As long as you do, I don’t want you to waste your life,” he looks at me. Behind him, I see Winstone storm off.

As I leave my parents, I walk to the Peacekeepers and am zapped and identified. I leave and stand with the other 16 year olds. I find Ferris and Eben, my two friends. Although I’m unquestionably taller, Eben is stronger in hand-to-hand combat and Ferris is more skilled with a bow and arrow than me. Personally, I prefer a sword, a weapon that I deem as actually useful.

“So, guys, should I volunteer?” Ferris asks seriously. I shrug, paying minimal attention, however, Eben encourages him greatly. I suppose I don’t have to volunteer this year, but I wouldn’t mind. “I’m considering it to impress Acacia, you know, the girl in my archery training class. Of course we know Acacia, it’s all Ferris talks about but I smile at him. All around us is chatter, probably because it’s one of District 2’s favourite days.

“Quiet, please,” Bettrina Dorn, the District 2 escort, speaks into the microphone, “I know we’re all very excited but let’s settle down so I can reveal this year’s tributes!” Bettrina eagerly says. I recall her being the escort for District 2 ever since I was 12, however she was probably doing it longer than that. She is traditionally wearing a shade of green once again, like she does every year; this year her dress is more calmed down that last year as it is a long, shimmering emerald dress, reaching her ankles. On her head is a large green headpiece, longer than her head. It has an odd shape and looks soft like petals.

“Shall we begin?” Her voice squeaks. “Our beautiful ladies first, I think!” She says smiling. Ever since she came on she’s been smiling, most likely for the dozen cameras surrounding us. She moves quite slowly, due to the tightness of her dress, however once she reaches the glass bowl, she dives her hand in and pulls the first slip her sharp, long nails reach.

She returns to the microphone, her smile twisting into a smirk as she announces the female tribute’s name. “Lucina Parkell!” A girl from the 18 year old section begins walking to the stage, however she is interrupted by a girl in the 17 year old area falling over and yelping slightly. The girl screeches that her ankle is broken, however she is cut off by the small girl next to her volunteering. She walks up to the stage confidently with a smile, her long, black hair tied neatly into two separate braids.

“Oh, no,” Ferris mutters next to me repetitively. I’m going to assume the girl who volunteered is Acacia and he can’t volunteer as he’ll have to kill her or die. I smirk inwardly as it now means I can volunteer and slaughter the weaklings from the other Districts. Acacia reveals her name to the District after Bettrina asks her. Her face is so child-like, as if she is only 12, but at the same time, her eyes make her look menacing, something only a fellow District 2 citizen could notice – not that I am intimidated.

“Now, for the boys,” Bettrina looks at the boys expectantly, not breaking her smile. She walks to the boys’ bowl and time feels like it slows down. I can’t decide if I want to volunteer. “Julius Gardont!” Bettrina’s scratchy voice disrupts my thoughts.

It’s now or never. “I volunteer!” I shout, pushing past Ferris and Eben, making Julius stop in his tracks, he looks slightly irritated, but it doesn’t matter now. I’m the District 2 male tribute now.

I walk to the stage and Bettrina asks for my name, “Zachary Termain,” I answer.

“Well, everybody, I present to you the District 2 tributes of the 51st annual Hunger Games!” Bettrina booms excitedly. I look at the cameras and decide I need to impress the Capitol one more time before the train journey.

  • Tector Ramsey, 14 - District 3

A knock at the door disturbs me and pulls me away from my desk, where I’ve been studying all night. I open the door and I’m greeted by my mother, who makes a joke about me being up all night, however my thoughts trail from her and to the woman behind her: my tutor.

“Ingrid came early this morning,” my mother announces, “she wanted to talk to you about the reaping...” her voice trails uncomfortably. She leaves me with Ingrid, her brown, curly hair bouncing around as she walks away. Ingrid walks in, pushing her glasses up.
“Ah, working all night?” She smiles as she looks at my desk. I smile weakly and Ingrid sits on the chair by my black, wooden desk. “Right, so, as you know, today is the reaping,” she says, “and you most definitely could get reaped,” she states unemotionally. She runs her hand through her thin, black hair and scratches her chin. “Tector, you’re my favourite student, you could win with your intelligence, you know.”

Analytically, I look at her, trying to see any signs of her lying, but she appears to be truthful. Ingrid and I were close, maybe even friends, but I didn’t know she had faith in me to win the Hunger Games. Her piercing blue eyes are looking back at me and I nod my head.

From her denim satchel, she pulls out some rolled up scrolls. “Okay, so, I understand that I am not a mentor, but I am going to help you,” she says, not looking at me and unravelled the papers, “running to the Cornucopia is a no-no, but you should go eventually, you’ll need to for any electrical products it has. Also, no allies, they could jeopardise your chances,” she plans, “Tector, but don’t worry, you’re from a rich family, it is unlikely you’ll be reaped, there’re only 3 slips with your name on,” she says calmly.

“Tector, Ingrid, we have to go!” My mother shouts from downstairs. Ingrid and I leave my room and walk down the stairs. “Tector, you haven’t changed!” My mother panics, “What is everyone going to think of us?” She presses her fingers against her forehead before dabbing her fingers on her tongue and trying to tame my crazy, wild hair.

Outside, I see 3 other houses identical to my own: white concrete, 6 windows on the front of the house and a grand, wooden double-entrance door. The other families exit out of their houses, arms around their children.

Walking to the town square, I hear the alarm, alerting everybody to the square. As I separate from my parents and Ingrid, I hug them all, with the latter wishing me luck either way.

Awkwardly, I stand alone. My parents, particularly my mother, didn’t allow me to go to public school for the sake of being safe, so I don’t know anybody around me and I hear their conversations. Two boys near me contemplate their chances of being reaped and luckily, their higher than mine.

On the stage, behind our horrendous escort, I see the previous victors, Beetee, Wiress and our first ever victor, Sung. Wiress is the most recent, she won 3 years ago, however she’s awfully quiet and timid. I would hate to be like that if I won. Imagine being gifted with all the riches you wanted, but be so reserved and lonely.

The escort leaves the victors and stands by the microphone, tapping it, causing feedback, to get our attention. “Welcome,” she says unenthusiastically, “let’s begin the District 3 reapings.” Her tone is dull and unexciting. She is most likely unhappy being the escort of District 3 and would much rather hose the District 1 or 2 reapings, but she should consider herself lucky, at least she doesn’t have to go to District 12.

“I’ll begin with the ladies,” she says, faking a smile. “And the District 3 female tribute of the 51st Hunger Games is...” she boringly announces, after picking up a slip and walking to the microphone, “Electra Wright.” She stretches out her gloved hands, trying to look welcoming. A group separates in the 15 year old section, creating an opening where a single girl stands. I can see her amber eyes glaze with tears and I recognise her. She lives in my neighbourhood, but I never knew her name.

Another girl pushes her, trying to get her to the stage, but Electra collapses, sobs escaping her mouth. A broad peacekeeper approaches Electra and grips her thin arms and yanks her to her feet. Her pale blue skirt is dirtied by the concrete floor and her ashen-coloured skin is streaked with tears.

I can help now but pity her. She must be so alone, like Wiress. Someone even pushed her to the stage, she needs support now and someone just threw her to her death. My eyes are stuck on her from her fragile bone structure to her braided brown hair.

“Carrying on,” our escort nods, interrupting my thoughts, yet truly smiling now. She struts to the male tribute bowl, her saffron pant suit shimmering in the sun, “And the male tribute is...” Her voice hangs in the air as my palms sweat. My name is only in there 3 times; my name is only in there 3 times... “Tector Ramsey!” She proclaims joyfully.

Heads look around in confusion. Nobody knows that name. I could escape right now, avoid going to the stage and hide away.
