  • Lea Orford, 17 - District 7

Despite what our escort, Geooa Mirona, tries to tell us, the train feels so slow. Everything feels so slow. I’m not sad or scared, just shocked. Rowan, my younger brother, was reaped and as usual, there was nobody to volunteer to rescue him. So I had to. I volunteered for some girl I can’t even recall the name, but all I do know is that she owes me her life.

“The Capitol is going to love you two,” Geooa chirps, “sweet, shy brother and valiant, brave sister!” She giggles. I see the victors – Ivy and Ewan – try their hardest to ignore Geooa and give us supportive glances. District 7 has had 4 victors before. Eve and Barker are still in Seven since they’re not mentoring. Ewan is the most recent victor, still in his 20s, but the other 3 are closer to 50 and 60.

Rowan has a sad smile on his face, “You hear that Lea? They’re going to like us!” I know he’s trying to make the best out of the situation, but I can’t reply.

“Let’s talk strategies,” Ivy interrupts, changing the topic, “You two will undoubtedly want to be together in the arena, but before we get to that, we should talk about your approach to the Capitol.” She’s right and I hadn’t really thought about it whilst volunteering. “How about we make your brother seem weak and you seem very protective?” I almost snap at her, demanding she tell me what she means by ‘seem’ but I hold my tongue.

Rowan eagerly nods his head, saying he can do that easily. I look down at my brother and regret starts pinching my heart. For so long I closed my family away, trying to make them independent, but it hasn’t helped, it looks as though it just made him insecure. I want to run my long, slender fingers through his wavy, brown hair, but I can’t baby him anymore.

I shrug my shoulders in response and Ewan leans forward, his juniper eyes watching me, “Grow up,” I twist my head in his direction, furrowing my eyebrows, “right now, he’s acting more mature than you.” I clench my fists and jaw angrily. He doesn’t know what I’m going through; I’m going to lose everything.

“Right, well,” Geooa breaks the silence, but standing up and straightening her pink floral dress, “I’ll go get some more tea.” Everyone knows there’s tea on the table, but no one stops her from leaving.

“Ewan, relax,” Ivy says and Ewan falls back into his chair, his eyes staying on my pale face. “Lea I can already say you’re good at axes, but what about you, Rowan? Are you good with axes?” Rowan’s mouth slants and he shakes his head, his hair dancing. Rowan proceeds to reveal that I didn’t allow him, or Pina, his twin sister, to work and that I did it all. Ivy glances at me and sighs. Great, another thing that I did wrong.

“Why don’t you guys eat up whilst me and Ewan go discuss what we can do,” Ivy announces after a small pause and starts to exit, Ewan in quick pursuit. Rowan and I sit in silence for a short while before he turns to me.

“I’m scared, Lea,” his eyes look dark, darker than their usual forest green. One of the reasons I spent so much time in the woods is because the trees reminded me of Rowan and Pina’s eyes. I look down at him and nod. I don’t know if I’m scared for myself or for Rowan or for Pina and my mother.

I look down at the food and on the plate are some sort of biscuit, which I rarely see, and a bowl of green soup, decorated with some small, thin leaves. I slurp it and Rowan giggles. I smile back at him and Ivy and Ewan return. “We’ll be arriving at the Capitol soon, I need you both to be relaxed. Rowan: big smiles, Lea: arm wrapped around him protectively. Don’t forget to wave.” Ivy sounds frantic, unprepared perhaps, “Lea I want you to use your axe skills and Rowan, if you can learn something during training then great, but if not, rely on your speed and maybe hide.”

Ewan’s eye are still on me and I start getting angry – what is this guy’s problem? “One more thing,” Ivy starts, “as you know, you may be on opposite sides of the Cornucopia and if that is to happen, you need a plan.” Ivy turns to Ewan.

“Are you going to meet at the Cornucopia or try to find each other in the arena?” Ewan continues, his voice monotonous. Rowan looks at me, and it looks as though he wants me to decide. I had no intention of going to the Cornucopia, it’s far too dangerous for what it’s worth, but it could be difficult to search for Rowan in the arena.

These two are great, although I fear the feels I'm obviously going to get from them. There's no way this is going to end well.

For now I think that going to the Cornucopia could be extremely dangerous for Rowan. Lea has a chance, she seems to be badass, but if Rowan goes there he might die in the bloodbath.

  • Calico Cambray, 16 - District 8 - Train Ride

Finally, I’m in the Hunger Games. I always hoped I would have been 18, but I can still do it now. I’m definitely more than capable – more than Tessa, my district partner. The girl has barely looked at me and when she does it’s to look at me with disgust. Of course one our mentors, Woof, will be favouring due to them being related. It’s kind of sad – not only will Woof think Tess will survive and so will the rest of her family. But she won’t, not with me in the arena; I already know I’m going to win. Our other mentor, Newella, seems very timid and frightened. I suppose it’s a common trait within the District 8 victors, but I won’t be.

“Woof, maybe you should be helping Calico too,” Newella chirps, almost as though she is scared of Woof. Woof looks at me, his eyes moving up and down. When he looks back at me, his eyes narrow.

“Newella,” Woof starts, “do you remember Topp from the 46th Hunger Games?” He asks and Newella looks down, her head nodding ever so slightly. “Do you remember what happened?” Woof once again questions, Newella nodding. All I can remember from Topp is that he died in the bloodbath trying to take the District 2 tribute, Brutus, who eventually won.

“I think we have a similar case,” Woof finishes. Tessa turns to me and smirks, her eyes looking flirty. I wink and smile back at her, however I must have misinterpreted as she scoffs and looks disgusted. “Newella, I request that you mentor Calico and I’ll stick to mentoring Tessa,” Woof orders Newella, “thank you.”

Newella leads me into another carriage of the train and we sit down. The light that shines through the window reflects off of Newella’s pale, young face. “How did you win?” I ask, which is a justified question, considering her small, petite frame and timid nature.

Her head lowers, trying to cover her weak smile. “I hid really and then killed the final opponent,” her smile fades, “You’ll never forget it, you know. Killing someone, stealing their life and then having to face their family, with a huge grin, during the Victory Tour, it kills you.”

Her thin-rimmed glasses slide down her nose and she pushes them back up. I wonder what Newella was like before her Games. I was only 7 so I can’t recall that far back, but she was probably a different person. “It was the District 10 girl. Can you imagine how heartbroken her family must have been? The fact that she, a girl from 10, had made it all the way to the finale, just to be killed by some weak, cowardly girl from 8,” her eyes water and all pity I had for her disappears. I understand that some people may find it sad, but it’s nothing worth crying over.

“So, what weapons are you planning on training with?” Newella inquires, sniffing and wiping her tears away. It’s not something I had thought about yet, but I’ll probably follow Tessa during the training and do whatever she is doing, just to show I’m better. I shrug my shoulders to Newella.

I sigh and relax back into the chair before yawning and sarcastically saying, “Well, this has been useful and all, but I’m going to bed.” I leave the train cart, smirking to myself.

I walk in on Tessa and Woof talking. Woof’s hand is on his head, looking though he’s concentrating deeply and Tessa muttering to him. Once they see me, they quieten down, until I exit.

In my room, I relax on the bed and watch the scenery fly by. Looking up, I feel my eyes flitter until I doze off.

“Thank you, Uncle Woof,” Tessa voice echoes. I rub my eyes and hurry out of bed to hear the conversation, “I’ll leave these in my room,” she sighs, “I need a quick shower before we reach the Capitol,” she sounds exhausted, weak.

“Well don’t be too long, we’ll be there in 30 minutes!” Woof’s gruff, usual voice replies. I wonder what she’s leaving in her room – possibly some useful mentoring notes, unlike Newella’s. Maybe I should find out...

    For Nine:

    Mentor

    Mazie Cyres

    20 (18 when she won the 49th)

She got reaped , being from a poor household with one younger brother and a older sister and having to take tessare. She never got sponsors because she was too shy and just got a 5 in training. She allied to the tributes of 8 and 6 (Apollo and Clio) , but the the ones from 6 got killed in the bloodbath along with the twelve year old district partner of Mazie. The arena was a castle and sometimes the paintings spoke. Sash , the male got paranoid by this and by the lack of food and killed his district partner Cotton. Mazie hide until the final three , when the gamemakers set the castle in fire to reunite the 3 final tributes. Mazie , the girl from 4 and the girl from ten. While ten died completly by the flames , four was already a bit burned and Mazie killed her easily ,even if four was a career

Mazie is still depressed by her games. She will rather stay quite , but will try to help the tributes. She always is prostituided by the Capitol and that´s why she has to go there the years , not just for mentoring

    Escort

    Veridie Doukas

    Female

    30

She yells everything she says in a hysterical loud voice , even for nothing. She actually wants to help the tributes , but just because she wants to get a victor so she can get "upgraded" to a "better" district like One or Four.

    Stylist.

    Idum Gargaryen.

    61

    Male

He thinks that everything he thinks or does is right. He doesn´t back out in an opinion. He dispise everyone who thinks different. He talks all the time , never wanting silence around him. He is very jealous to everyone who has more or is more successful than him. He is very careful with everything he does. He smiles all the time , even when he angry or sad. He is apatic after years of seeing the tributes he worked with die.

He has two sons (Ricka being 3 years old and Leonidas being 8) and a wife called Hestia.

He has orange dyed long curly hair , 1,7 cm tall , 144 KG , caucasian , green eyes , usually wears green jackets , yellow shirts and white pants with violet shoes.

This has all been too surreal. Is this actually happening? Am I really being shipped off to my death? Although it is possible I could win, I’m still anxious. To be honest, at least I have more of a chance than my unfortunate district partner. At least 17 year olds have won before, 13 year olds like him always die. I hope I’m not persuaded to care for him in the arena.

The train ride is very dull. No one is talking. After several more minutes in this painful, suffocating silence, the two mentors exchange glances and leave, abandoning me and Farro. This train ride became more awkward and unpleasant. As if the fact that I will die in a week’s time isn’t enough to depress me.

“I always knew I was going to be reaped,” Farro speaks, startling me slightly, “I knew it was going to happen,” I look away, watching the variety of green trees zoom past.

“Same for me, I guess, just I didn’t want it to,” I say, hoping my voice doesn’t shake. I’m hesitant to befriending Farro. It’s not just him personally, I don’t want to get too close to anyone. Not since Bran, my brother, died.

“How do you think we’re going to die?” Farro asks and I’m taken aback slightly. I suppose, since my sister’s naive attitude, that I thought everyone her age had a similar attitude. I’m grateful for that – that my sister isn’t sad and pessimistic, although she may be now, knowing I’m going to die.

Looking down at Farro, I expect to see some form of tear trailing down his face, instead there’s nothing there. He’s not even crying. Farro then turns his face to me and asks me the question I’ve been dreading.

“Can we be allies?” his asks calmly. I don’t know how to reject him without angering or upsetting him. I’m independent and I like being so. Fortunately, our escort, Veridie, intrudes on us before I’m forced to give an answer.

“Hi, hi!” she cheer, clearly hyper. “So, your mentors and I just created some factfiles on the other tributes, what we know about them for the reaping!” I’m quite shocked, I didn’t think either her or the mentors cared particularly much. In front of us, she lays down 22 sheets, all with a holographic photo of the tribute and some information. 4 of them particularly stand out, labelled with red. I can immediately guess they’re the Careers.

The girl from One’s piercing green eyes and blonde, curly hair are obvious. She’s only 15, maybe I could take her out, but she did volunteer so she must have some skill. I’m also older than the boy from Two, but I’m not going to risk fighting him. He’s evidently much taller and bulkier, the kind of the tribute I would avoid. The boy from One also looks quite menacing, however the girl from Two, looks too adorable to be considered violent, but it says on the file that she took another girl out at the reaping just so she could volunteer.

Other tributes I will be wary off are the tributes from Four and Eight, the boys from 5, 6 and 10 and the girl from 7. The girl from Seven is definitely to be careful around as she’s there to protect her brother, she could do anything.

People I have no concern about are the girls from 3, 5 and 6 and the tributes for Eleven. I almost pity District 11 this year... A 12 year old girl and a 13 year old boy.

“Okay, so now that you’ve had a nice, long look, any tributes you want me to keep away from you during the tribute parade and those nasty, awkward elevator rides?” Veridie asks, cocking her head cutely.

“Other than the Careers, I don’t want to be near the boy from 10... He looks savage and that he belongs with the Careers,” Farro answers, “and thank you, Veridie,” his voice collected. Even when I answer Veridie, I won’t thank her. She’s doing this for herself in the long term. Happy, comfortable tributes equals more likely to win and if we win, she could upgrade to a more desirable district.

“So, Riley, how about you, sweetie?” Veridie pushes me for an answer. I almost feel like ignoring her, but this could be beneficial for me. It’s obviously the tributes from 4 and 8, the boys from 5 and 6 or the girl from 7. I just can’t decide yet. “Well?” Veridie squeals.

I think Charon is probably the most dangerous out of these as well as the least approachable, so I think he should be kept away from the Nine's at all cost to keep them safe. Morgan, Aaron and Lea are dangerous too, but they seem to be nice and maybe there could be an alliance with them. David, Tessa and Calico don't seem to be as dangerous as the others.

“Oxford and I will leave you two, just to get better acquainted,” Carolina, District 10’s youngest and most recent victor, chimes. She’s so sweet and relaxed, it’s difficult to believe that just a couple of years ago she slaughtered people my age. However, for Oxford, it isn’t as hard. His face is scarred, one of his eyes is missing its iris and pupil and his hands look wider than my neck. It’s tragic how damaged and broken he looks, whereas Carolina looks as fresh as the fields back in Ten.

Carolina and Oxford exit, leaving me and my district partner, Helion. I don’t even recognise him from school, it’s like he just appeared out of nowhere. He is very muscular, probably bigger than my own father. His hair is short and naturally spiky – or maybe its grease keeping it up – but none of his features remind me of who he is.

“Hello,” Helion starts, “I am Helion,” his voice is quite deep and monotonous, as though it’s scripted. I nod slightly and greet him back. “Do you think you will win?” He asks and I’m taken aback. I don’t know if I’ll win, but I do know that I’ll try my hardest. “I apologise if you do not want to answer.”

“Its fine,” I dismiss him calmly, “I don’t know, but I’d like to think so,” I shyly smile to myself. Looking at Helion, his expression is blank like he doesn’t care. Does he have a problem with my answer? “Why, what about you?” I retort to his silence, slightly angered.

“I will win,” Helion replies bluntly and before I can argue, he continues, “for my sister,” I don’t push him for what happened to his sister – I can assume. I don’t sympathise with him as I’m sure thousands of people back in Ten have lost someone because of the Hunger Games. I’m pretty sure my mother lost her brother because of them.

Part of me is thankful, almost. Usually, right now on an ordinary day, I would be slaving away, milking around the 150th cow. Its menial and tiring, but it keeps my family alive... For about a day and then we all have to work and work and work for hours on end.

“Did you go to school?” Helion asks, curiosity bright in his eyes. I nod and I think I almost see a smile upon his face. “That’s lucky, my parents homeschooled me the best they could...” His voice trails off disappointedly. I’m on the verge of laughing in his face. How anyone has the audacity to call me lucky is bizarre. However, instead, I just ignore him.

The silence is a short one. It isn’t long before Carolina and her perky attitude along with Oxford return. “Well, now that we’re all friends, I’m curious about your ideas. What do you guys want to do?” Carolina asks us, switching her eyes from my face, to Helion’s.

“I want to be alone or maybe, I might see if the Careers will have me,” Helion answers first. A smile curls on my face. The idea of Helion asking to join the Careers only for them to reject him amuses me. As for me, I don’t really have a plan. All that I hope for is that I survive the bloodbath. I shrug in response to Carolina.

Our escort joins us, squealing as she enters the train cart, “Keep calm, everybody, we are reaching the Capitol very shortly!” And outside of the window, I begin seeing tall buildings, shimmering in the bright sun. The Capitol looks to be close to a lake that looks covered in crystals.

Eventually the beautiful scenery disappears as we enter a dark tunnel. Soon, we are greeted by hundreds of women and men screeching and cheering as we go past. I think I can see every colour and I’m amazed. It’s dazzling and gorgeous.

“Smile, now,” our escort mutters behind her smile and I freeze slightly. Helion doesn’t do anything – just staring at them blankly.
