I can now confirm that I am the most likely to win this year, especially after meeting the District One tributes. Honestly, the only person I consider a real competitor is Charon, but his district partner is going to drag him down. He tried to play it off when talking to us, but I overheard him agree to meet her at the Cornucopia.

“I’m going to finish up practicing with the axes,” Ruby starts, leaving the three of us and Zachary soon decides to follow him. This could be fun; I could get to know Sprinkle a little better, but I’m going to have to put on a girly charade in order to get along, unfortunately.

“Maybe we could spend some time together, Sprinkle?” I ask, beaming at her. She nods and returns the smile. “Where to first? Maybe we should check out some of the tributes... Particularly the males,” I wink to her, but gag at myself inwardly. It’s frustrating how far I have to go to win, but it’ll pay off when Claudius Templesmith announces me as the winner.

“What about over there?” Sprinkle points towards the spear section, where the tributes from Four and the boy from Ten are, “Don’t you think Four is cute?” She asks and I have to restrain myself from twisting my face in disgust, but I play along and nod eagerly. The two of us travel across the steel floor and reach the spears.

“Hi, guys, mind if we join?” I smirk seductively, particularly at the boy from Four, but also flash my smile at Ten. I see the female from Four roll her eyes before launching the spear, which embeds into a target’s chest. Her partner congratulates her. Sprinkle steps up next and I hear her mutter: ‘I’m not going to be second this time.’

She throws the spear, however, it doesn’t land perfectly in the middle of the chest, but rather the right shoulder and I notice her grinding her teeth. The girl from Four giggles before interjecting, “Guess you Careers aren’t great at everything.” Sprinkle pivots on her feet and leaps for Four and I stand there, with my arms crossed, watching the two girls struggle. Four’s partner tries to grapple Sprinkle and pull her off, however Sprinkle is desperate to cause injury. The Peacekeepers soon spot the fight and pull Sprinkle off, ordering her to another sector. I follow her.
“Who does she think she is?!” Sprinkle snaps whilst swinging a sword. I watch from the side and shrug, but inform her that she knows she shouldn’t mess with us. Sprinkle smirks and nods whilst striking the instructor down, who compliments Sprinkle’s skills. “You’re right, she knows not to mess with me.”

“Sprinkle,” I start, “who do you think is the most dangerous tribute here?” I finish as she sits next to me, using a shiny surface to check her hair. She ponders momentarily before answering, saying that most of the boys this year, like Five, Six, Eight and Ten, with only some girls like Seven and Eight. I take note she doesn’t say Four, even though they are dangerous, maybe she’s underestimating them, which will be bad for her.
“What about Nine?” I enquire, whilst looking at her practice with a machete. Sprinkle makes an undecided noise, whilst shrugging her shoulders.
She adds, “I don’t think she’s that great, but better than most of the other tributes,” and I understand where she’s coming from. She’s not threatening or dangerously skilled, but still a definite competitor.

“What do you think to adding someone to the Careers?” I finally ask. It’s something I’ve been curious over since the Tribute Parade, especially with the disappointment of this year’s Careers, aside from me. Sprinkle turns her head to me, shock evident.

“It’s not something I thought of... But, maybe?” She sounds unsure, like I’m pressuring her. She slowly starts to nod, and continues, “but who?” I look around, there are many people we could ask, but she’s right... Who?

Farro Cornson, 13 - District Nine - Training Centre

It’s a new morning and I’m still mad, upset and disappointed Lucy left me. Everyone always leaves me. But I’ll show her, I can win without her. I walk to the berries section, where I spent all morning with Lucy. Luckily, no one is here so I can just focus.

“Oh, you’re back again today,” the instructor says tiresomely. He doesn’t want me here, what a surprise. I try to dismiss his comment and learn more about poisonous berries. The instructor gives me many berries and their properties, however they’re all jumbled up for me to match.
After matching them all together successfully, I smile to myself. “Listen, kid, you know all about them, just go,” the instructor says to me, bored. I look at him and feel a lump in my throat, as if I’m about to burst into tears, but I compose myself and leave him.

I don’t even know where to go. I need to practise with weapons otherwise I’ll die, but I can’t carry a sword, spear or axe. I make my way towards daggers, where the tributes from Three and the girl from Five is, the latter looking as fragile as I feel. She has a bruised eye and I’m curious to how she got it.

After listening to the instructor’s instructions for several minutes, the four of us begin practising, the pair from Three together and the girl from Five with me.

She is very agile and swift, but doesn’t have much power behind her strikes, however that’s more than I can say for myself. She dodges every stab, slash and slice I make. We practise for an hour and I pick up on her moves and manage to dodge some of her attacks, however she’s still too quick for me. I begin panting and we stop.

“I’m Gia,” she says, not looking at me whilst scraping some of her black, long hair back. I introduce myself and I put my hand out for her to shake, which she cautiously does. I’m still curious about her black eye and before I can stop myself, I impulsively ask where she got it from. She looks shocked and scared for a minute, looking around. After she has checked it’s clear, she answers me, “A Peacekeeper did this. They were going to kill my dad and before I knew so, I resisted the Peacekeeper escorting me to find out. I attacked him, biting his hand, elbowing his stomach and he punched me,” she mutters quietly, still not looking at me, “I didn’t think it was so prominent,” she says, trying to cover it up with her hair. I feel awful for asking, but I couldn’t help myself.

“Do you want to practise with me somewhere else?” I ask her, but she shakes her head, looking sad. She informs me she wants to train alone and I understand.

I walk off to the pair from Eleven, who are practising making traps. They look around my age so I join them and they don’t send me away. “Hi, my name’s Eva,” she smiles, however her partner looks at me more coldly. Eva notices this and introduces him, “this is Suomaf, my partner.” Perhaps Suomaf is looking at me in jealously, like I’m going to steal Eva away from him.

We make traps together and Eva is much better than me. Her fingers are small and nimble so they can tie knots easily, but I’m still good at it. The instructor sends a fake rabbit through Eva’s trap and it snatches the rabbit up and Eva cheers happily. I smile and she embraces me and Suomaf together. “We’re such a good team!” She beams cheerfully.

“We’re going to the climbing section, do you want to come?” Eva invites me, but I reject her offer and go to Riley. The last time I saw Riley was yesterday at lunch, she spent all night in her room and I heard the occasional grunt, like she was training. I think she is avoiding me.
Riley spots me coming to her and tries to turn away. However, I’m too close and she stays, at the machete station. “Oh, hi, Farro,” she smiles weakly, “do you want to train together?” I nod unsurely and we swing our machetes, Riley with more skill. “You’re doing well, Farro,” she feebly compliments me. I smile, but can’t help but think she is patronising me.

“Lunch time!” A Peacekeeper calls and we all flock into the lunch hall.

After selecting my food, I ponder on where I’m going to sit. I see Gia, alone, but I should think she wants to be alone and then I see Eva and Suomaf, however I would think Suomaf would definitely not want me there. Finally I see Riley, however she is with the pair from Eight, although she isn’t talking to them.

  • Sorry I haven't been voting in a while! But your story is great!

[The boy from six] and [The girl from seven] tbh even though I made Ruby I'm not rooting for the Careers. And these two seem like they'd be the least loyal to the Careers in my opinion.

[Sit with Riley] Maybe the four of them can create an alliance.

[The girl from Seven] and [The boy from Six] I agree with Jane. These two seem like they'd be the least loyal to the Careers.

[Sit with Eva and Suomaf] Eva seems so sweet :c maybe they can be allies? Eva's not useless. She can make traps for tributes in the arena, or even food. However, I'm not sure about Suomaf. Maybe he'll show us his skills if he has any :3

Sprinkle thinks Aaron is cute eh? >:)

“Guess you Careers aren’t great at everything.”

You're goddamn right, Morgi :D That was cool, though I'm afraid she's on Sprinkle's list now.

[The boy from Six] [The girl from Seven]

I think Morgan and Sprinkle won't get along well, so no D4 careers for me. That jackass Calico and maybe Helion could get along with the careers a little bit too well, while I'm not sure how Riley will react. But while Charon probably has the right mindset for the careers, he already seems to think about ways to dispose of them. And Lea won't show any loyalty to them for her brothers sake, so I guess these two will be the worst options for the careers, e.g. the best options for everyone else.

    [Sit with the Riley]

I like Riley and think she's pretty cool. I also like Eva, but I think if he manages to ally with Riley it could benefit him the most.

This is probably the best choice for everyone since the two probably won't show any loyalty whatsoever to the careers.

Fuck. Fuck. Eva seems so nice and adorable. What have I done? The feels are going to get me in the Games. I know it.

As Liquid said, Riley can benefit Farro the most.

  • Rowan Orford, 12 - District Seven - Lunch Hall

“Lea from Seven,” the girl from One calls, “come over here, we need to talk!” Her cheerful smile and relaxed body language thankfully suggests I don’t need to be concerned for my sister, but I’m still nervous to see her go. She hesitantly walks towards her and the other Careers.

I notice the Careers have rounded a few tributes already: the pairs from Four and the boys from Six and Ten. The girl from One then calls for the girl from Nine and the tributes from Eight, the former who has to leave her district partner on his own and it’s upsetting how broken he looks once she leaves.

I too am sat on my own now with Lea gone, however maybe it’s good to be independent for a short while – I could get to know some of the other tributes.

I spot the duo from Three and wander towards them. As I sit down, I smile and introduce myself. Although the girl seems more reserved, the boy returns the introduction by stating his name as Tector. The girl then also introduces herself as Electra.

“How are you two?” I ask, a smile plastered on my face and they exchange unsure glances. Maybe they’re confused as to why I’m so polite, but I can’t help it.

“Is this a joke?!” A girl beckons across the lunch hall and everyone stops to turn to her. It’s Lea. “Fine, you can try to kill me in the arena! In fact, I’d like to see you try, but I’m not joining your bullshit alliance!” She yells to the Careers before storming off and now I’m concerned. What if the Careers target her? I don’t want her to die – she’s only in these Games because of me – what have I done?

Lea comes to my side and grabs my wrist before taking me away from the pair from Three and we sit in the corner, alone.

She grunts in frustration, before speaking, “They wanted me to join their alliance, Rowan.” She sighs heavily, “I couldn’t leave you, you know that right? I’ll be with you every step of these Games.” I smile at her and feel even worse. She should be with them, that way she’d be more likely to win, but instead she has to look after me.

“They wanted me and Six to join especially, for whatever reason, and threatened to kill us at the Cornucopia if we didn’t accept,” she laughed to herself, “but they let all the others off with a small warning.” She runs her hand through her long, thick brown hair. She looks stressed and I chew on the side of my mouth anxiously.

“What if they try to kill us?” I splutter out, not looking at my sister. She lifts my chin up gently, so our eyes meet before promising she wouldn’t let them and I smile. Although my sister is generally a negative person to others, she always knows how to lift my mood.

“The guys from Eight and Ten were interested, but I don’t know, neither of Four were particularly interested, but I don’t know...” Her face drops, “I don’t know about Six either; he’s seems very protective over his partner, but he seems like he’d fit right in with them.”

“So, you think you’re capable of meeting me somewhere else in the arena?” Lea asks, “Promise not to run to the Cornucopia?” I nod and she ruffles my hair, “Listen, I didn’t really want to talk strategy with you, it’s not fair, but I think you should make new friends, people you can trust, in case you can’t find me, alright?” She asks after a breathy sigh. I nod, but the only people I’ve interacted with as of yet at the tributes from Three who seemed less than eager to talk to me.

[Talk to the tributes from Three] [Find friends from other Districts]

Tessa Tutra, 16 - District Eight - Eighth Floor

So training’s done today and I’m still pondering whether I should join the Careers, if Calico does then I probably won’t – I don’t want to be anywhere near that creep in the arena. In the elevator, the pair from Six look awkward, mainly the boy, he probably has a lot to talk about his District partner with, if he joins the Careers or not. I’m surprised how many tributes they are considering. That makes me think it’s a trap to kill off all the competition. The pair from Six exit out of the elevator on the sixth floor and it’s not long before me and Calico leave.

Before we enter, Calico forces his hand onto the door and prevents me from going in. He smirks in my face, “I’m surprised, Tessa,” his devious smile not leaving, “I’m surprised the Careers would even consider someone so pathetic like you,” before pinching my cheek like I’m a child.

“I’m surprised they would want some weirdo in their group who will raid through all their stuff like you did to me,” I snap, “so looks like they’re letting in all kinds of people.” I return his smirk and his eyebrows furrow in anger.

“Do not tell Woof or Newella that we’ve been invited into the Careers, okay?” Calico finishes and waits for me to reply. I nod and shrug and we both enter into our lounge where my uncle and Newella are.

“Calico and I have been invited to the Careers,” I announce as I walk in and my uncle jumps out of his seat.

“Well, it’s not quite like that,” Calico smiles to our mentors, “you know Tessa, she loves exaggerating,” he spits out. Uncle Woof crosses his arms and asks for an explanation.

“The Careers asked me, Calico and a bunch of others if we wanted to join the Careers,” I say, expressionless. My uncle asks how many were asked and I answer with 8, including Calico and me. 8 tributes is a lot and with the Careers, it would make up half of the tributes. Now I’m really concerned as to why they asked so many.

“I sure hope you’re not joining,” Newella squeaks, whilst knitting. I shrug and Calico laughs saying he surely wouldn’t. I know he’s lying and I’m pretty sure my uncle does too.

“This is obscure and unnatural,” Woof mutters to himself, “I’ve never seen this before, what could they be planning?” He continues to speak to himself. “Well, maybe one of you should join,” he finally says, earning a gasp from Newella, “now listen,” he hushes her, “think about it, keep the enemies closer. Kill them in their sleep.” I never thought about that and I doubt Calico did either. He probably will still join for the sake of joining.

“We’ll talk more about this after dinner, Newella is it ready?” Woof asks her and she places her stitching down and leads us to the dinner table where an Avox has laid out a meal of lamb broth and pastries.

We all finish our dinner and Woof speaks first, “So which of you want to ‘join’ the Careers?” He asks, but before we can answer, he looks at me, “Since Calico said he wasn’t considering it, I suppose I’ll have to trust you with this.” I smirk at Calico and look back at my uncle.

“If you don’t mind, uncle, I want to sleep on this idea, if that is alright?” I ask and Woof nods. I dismiss myself and walk straight to my room. I’m tired of all of this. Not just the training, but the constant questions from Woof and the constant watchful eye of Calico.

I lay my head on the feather-filled pillows and it’s not long before I’m asleep.

“Hey,” a hushed voice whispers, “wake up, Tessa,” it says. I flutter my eyes open and before me, staring right back at me, is Calico. That creep has snuck into my room once again! I try to scream but his hand is over my mouth.

“I’m here to talk,” he whispers, forcing his hand on my mouth to quieten me, “I just wanted to know if you were joining the Careers.” He looks at me, taking his hand off my mouth, “I know I give you a lot of shit, but, I like you, Tessa,” he averts his eyes. I don’t know if I believe him, but he continues, “I wouldn’t mind if you joined the Careers, you know...”

  • While your HG story was awesome and very entertaining for me, you probably made a good decision. Writing without enjoying it is never a good thing. However, so far your story is the only one that got outright cancelled, so I have hopes that at least the others will continue at some point, as long as there is no statement about them being cancelled. Perhaps at least this one and TWD_25's story will continue some day.
