point 'n klick control

edited August 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I just started playing and so far I like the humour, the style, the voice acting, the music (o sweet music) etc.

But there is one thing:

Why oh why can't we have the point 'n klick control like you did for Sam & Max?
Isn't there anything you can do to bring it back?
Sure it's better than in Wallace & Gromit, but...

sincerely

    I can only agree.
The WASD/mouse combo feels somewhat awkward.
I guess I'll get used to it, but it just feels wrong. I keep forgetting to use keyboard and try to click places to go there :(

it is becasue the game is 3d and point and click controls only work well on 2d adventure games.

You've not played Sam & Max then...

As for the control system, it did feel a little awkward but I'm sure I'll be used to it before too long!

I see no reason to not have ordinaray point and click. and I want it.

point and click can work, they just gotta control there damn camera, i mean it moves like crazy from scene to scene, on the boat, suddenly you got a big wooden pole right in youre center view.

we gotta have point and click back, im sure that friendly user on the forums will post his scripts, and yet again show telltale just like in Wallace and gromit it works :)

Keyboard and Mouse doesnt work, Adventure games are slow and you sit and take the view, so i constantly move my hand away, now the mouse only move guybrush has the problem that while i move as you would point and click i explore the area to see what i can click on. So that sadly doesnt work either :( its really a shame,

I must say this, ive given it a chance in Wallace and gromit and now in Monkey Island, if anymore games use this keyboard + mouse sam & max or other, im done, a more demanding control scheme that is so inferior, its better that telltale controls its areas and camera angles, they are moving and zooming to much, makes it annoying even now. And with them gone point and click will work just perfect, so again please bring it back.

and what makes the keyboard controls even worse and pisses me off, is you move around with keyboard right, then you find oh i wanna click on that, and he moves all by him self, its feels so annoying, that sometimes he can move by him self, but not all the time?, its so damn frustrating just almost a lack of nice worths to describe it. painful, awful annoying.

so again control youre areas and camera angles and give us full point and click back it can work, i wont buy that easy comment, you tried something and that is great, but its failed.

sometimes you just gotta admit it, it takes guts, Ubisoft had guts, when we flooded their forum with how foolish they were, and for a not to smart company, they did listen. Its time you bite the dust and listen to us, its really the only thing that making sure instead of monkey island being 100% fun and enjoyable, it takes 50% of that focus because, oh gosh Guybrush will move by himself when i find useful stuff, but he wont move to empty locations where i can wanna go. I cannot adapt to it, because it doesnt feel right.

Have you tried moving with the mouse? Just hold the left button and "drag" Guybrush around. Perhaps you will find it more enjoyable. Not true point and click, which I'd prefer, but you can hold your coffee cup at all times ;)

I'd rather have classic point 'n click controls, too.

the dragging was really bad and I found myself relying on the keyboard arrows almost immediately.

    This.

I thought there was going to be controls so you didnt have to hold down the mouse button to get him to move?

You can use WASG to move.
  • edited July 2009
I know but i heard somewhere in the forums that there was a setup that was mouse only that you didnt have to hold down the button.

ofc, thanks for trying the mouse dragging approach :) nice we are heard, but again classic point and click please.

yeah i have tried that :) the problem with it is, it makes exploring the area a pain, when you move with normal point and click or keyboard, you explore the area with the mouse, you dont wait to guybrush stands still and then explore? atleast i dont hehe, so that interupts gameplay flow, just like the keyboard does also, just that i have to focus on it every single time :(

I wish it wasnt such a big pain and it is sadly, and it really ruins such a big part of an excellent game which Monkey Island truely is, just the damn controls :( yuck.

i did not know there was wsda mmmm thats nice however dislike the drag the only thing i found slightly irating but thats nit picking

Great job on the game TT!

I do have to agree with the others though, this odd 'hula hoop' for movement is quite akward and unexpected...
  • edited July 2009
i agree i would love to beable to use point and clikc

This mouse business has turned me off. I hate the dragging crap.
  • edited July 2009
I'm getting used to it, but it's still absurd. This isn't progress, it's a sideways step into weird-town.
  • edited July 2009
I think it works pretty well, I'm only using the mouse controls.

Aah... the joys of watching newcomers to the forums discuss old things. ;)

Let me re-cap for you all. Strong Bad was the last P&C game. When they came out with Wallace & Gromit, there was no mouse control for movement. Gone was the good old point and click. Replaced by more "imersive" direct control using the arrow keys or WASD keys.

And the forums went crazy with multiple pages of complaints. TTG basically said they were not going back to P&C due to various technical issues. More discussions ensued and then the TOMI announcement came. People begged for some form of mouse control. We were not going to get P&C, but we wanted something.

This new mouse movement method was a compromise. Your other option is to use a gamepad like what was needed for Grim Fandango and MI4.

I would prefer P&C, but I find the new system very easy to control. And prefer it to the no mouse control for movement option of W&G.

I'd vote for point and click too.

Feels like the mouse control drag and move is too sensitive and i hate wasd.

I got him to run once with click drag, but have no idea how to do it again.

I have no problems with click drag I'm surpised so many of you guys do. Anyways.... To run you click both mouse buttons (right+left) and drag. I can control Guybrush just as good with the mouse only controls. The only thing is you can't move and click at the same time, but really you only need to move to pan the camera. Other than that its click-fest-o-rama any how.

Nah. Point and click... nah. I like the movement system, even if the click and drag is a bit shaky. And I will repeat something that I'm going to probably every time someone complains about TMI.

We have been waiting NINE years for a new MI game, now that it's out, are we really going to tear it down and nitpick every little thing? All I'm saying is, don't look the gift horse in the mouth.
  • edited July 2009
can you run with the keyboard controls, too?
  • edited July 2009
    SHIFT key.

If it ain't broke, why "fix" it? The controls in sam and max work great, and I am continuosly finding myself clicking on areas to move to them :( totally lame. Both control schemes in Tomi feel a bit awkward and clumsy to me. At least they brought back inventory combination puzzles! Hope they implement them into all future games (not just mi)
  • edited July 2009
I thought CMI was the easiest to use regarding the controls, and especially the camera angles. It was far easier being able to see the whole scene on one screen without the camera changing angles every few steps.

Not complaining though cause I've got used to it by now :)

you can have click and point go to opsoins

Exact same here; all the way through the game and even in the last area I found myself clicking to move!

Not really, because they took that option away from us. They also took away the object highlight function, the one benefit of this sorry affair.

Anyway Telltale have proven themselves to be pretty damn thick-headed on this issue. The gameplay suffers so we can run up a bridge to get to the doctors house.

They've got to the point where the controls just about function, so I don't think they'll ever accept it was a mistake. If you want P&C you'll have to look elsewhere.

Love the game guys, but have to agree - point & click is the answer.

Is it not possible to have both side by side?

Because now we have to share the sandbox with the Xbox people. We're essentially getting ports of console games now, with wacky "virtual joysticks", instead of vice versa.

I understand that costs need to kept down, and now you don't have to spend time on pathfinding, but it feels sloppy to regress after getting a taste of true point and click for Bone, two seasons of Sam & Max, and Strong Bad.

    Another disappointed customer here.
Direct control is such a waste of time.
