    Nymeria’s War Histories & Lore

Missy - The Epiphany of Madness

The sky was black, like it was blotched with ink when she arrived at the courtyard. The eyes stared at her from the darkness, arms reaching out into the moonlight that lit the court, trying to pull her into the shadows. She avoided them, embracing the night light.

The courtyard was barren, with dead trees and a small dry fountain in the centre. Within that fountain were a few small puddles of water, to which she peered into. She saw a ghost staring back at her. It wore face paint, like that of a skull, yet the heat had started to make it run. She was horrid.

Missy smirked, staring into the reflection of herself. A short giggle broke from her lips, and she fought hard not to burst into a loudly amused cackle. Instead, she grasped the dry wooden shaft of the guard’s spear, her palms sweaty.

The blood of the man’s spear had dried in the heat, but the sweat on her hands kept the blood thick and wet. She sickly smiled at the sight of it, bringing her hands to her lips and tasting the liquid. Satisfied, she turned back to her patient companion in the puddles, she stared at her with curiosity and interest.

“Did I ever tell you the truth about freedom?” She asked, her voice soft and somewhat flirtatious. The mirror reflection shook her head, remaining silent. “Tell me.” She said with intrigue, causing Missy to smirk at her.

She turned her eyes to the black sky, a light stood out in the darkness. The white ball that sang to her a special tune, the light that unleashed her. She felt a tingling in her chest, she grinned and licked her bloody fingers, turning back to her partner.

“Freedom is a lie.” Missy blurted, almost disappointed. “Peasants don’t have it, nor do kings. Wives don’t have it, and men wish they had it. We do things to make us feel free, but none of us are truly free. Not unless you’re like me.” The girl looked up to Missy, her skin starting to show beneath the melting paint.

“Like you? You’re a slave to a mad king.” The girl mocked, shaking her head ignorantly. Missy grinned in response, accepting the taunt.

“Mad king? Madness is the true freedom, an epiphany which none have come to understand.” Missy stated warmly, playing with the tip of the bloody spear. “And Albin is no mere king, girl. Albin is a god, the God.” Missy smirked at the girl’s sudden confusion.

“The Seven are your gods… The Father, the Mother, the-” Missy laughed hysterically, off putting the girl. She shook her head, smiling at the girl.

“The Seven are a lie, used by men to control the weak and innocent. I do not let men control me, I’m free. Albin unleashed me from the chains of man, the chains of reality.” The girl stared at Missy for a while, raising her eyebrow.

“Then you admit you’re sick?” Missy sliced her finger along the edge of the sharp steel, adding her blood to the guard’s. She turned to the girl, disgusted.

“I’m not sick.” Missy yelled, defending herself, her voice echoed through the yard. She lowered her voice to a whisper, almost a mutter. “You see this as a curse, like I’m falling into a never-ending void of darkness. Like I have no control.” The girl nodded, and Missy simply smiled and shook her head, releasing a short giggle.

“What you call madness unbinds me, unleashes me. I am the fall, I am the darkness.” Missy stated, lifting her finger to her lips and sucking out the blood. The girl sighed, frowning.

“Then you are truly lost.” She said, almost as if she was disappointed. Missy shook her head once again.

“No, I’m found.” With her words, she spun around and found a girl staring at her. The blonde girl looked at her with disgust in her eyes, her tone was spiteful.

“Who are you talking to?” She asked, her voice full of confidence and ignorance. Missy took a step towards her, spear in hand, the girl remained still with a brave smile. “You can’t hurt me.” She said confidently, as if she truly believed it herself.

“What’s your name, girl?” Missy asked, smirking at her. The girl giggled to herself, shaking her head. “I don’t give my name to filth like you.” She muttered, gazing elsewhere. Missy smiled, lowering the spear and walking closer to her.

“Is that so?” Missy asked, throwing her spear in front of her. The weapon rolled across the stone floor, stopping before the girl’s feet. The cocky girl looked at the spear, and then at Missy.

“Who were you talking to?” She demanded, her tone irritable and impatient. Missy smiled, though before she could say another word, she heard a collective of footsteps.

The once quiet yard now buzzed with fuelled hatred, as a wave of guards flooded the court. Anger was in the men’s eyes, their swords unsheathed and their glares piercing. They found him. Missy thought, instantly changing moods.

Missy backed away from the girl, turning fearful and pointing her bloody hands at the confused girl. The guards stared at her with just as much confusion, while Missy started to scream.

“Please!” Missy started, a genuine sounding fear in her tone. “She has a weapon, she killed a guard and cut me.” Missy yelled, pulling her bloody hands close. The guards looked at the girl with anger. The girl turned her angry glare to Missy, clenching her fists.

“You bitch! You lying filthy whore!” She turned her gaze to the guards, backing away from Missy. “I am innocent, I swear!” The guards exchanged looks before turning their gazes to the shaking Missy, fearful and in tears. Silence filled the court for a moment, until when guard stepped forward.

“It’s her!” One yelled, pointing at the girl as he slowly approaching her. “The handmaiden who spoke shit behind ol’ Ronny’s back. Now she killed my brother.” The guard stopped before her, smirking. “Tryin’ to escape bitch? I’d say Ron wouldn’t mind a couple of words with you.” The guard said with a sick grin, the girl stood frozen still, in clear shock.

The men grabbed her, dragging her away as her angry screams echoed through the castle walls. The melodic sounds lingered in the air until silence reappeared. Missy lowered her head, cackling at herself. She turned back to the puddle, the girl looking at her with disgust. Missy grinned.

    “See? I’m free.”

  • [Give him a polite answer] I am pretty sure this choice won't win but I suppose I will go with it anyway. Lord Dalt is no doubt under alot of stress right now and I would imagine seeing that most of your liege's soldiers sent to you are women would be alarming since i imagine it is not something that he has typically seen before and he does not know their worth in battle. With that said, Lord Dalt has already bent the knee to Nymeria and is happily accepting their help so answering what seems to be a legitimate question with respect shouldn't hurt anything.

So, Dianna will give Lord Darin a rude answer. Perhaps it's good to make clear from the beginning who is in charge here =)

Anyway, sadly I haven't made any progress past few days, because it has been the orientation week in my new uni, and I've had zero hours for writing. Today I will have time to write though, and I'm starting to write a Naemon part, which should be his last on this chapter.

However, I probably can't make the whole part in one evening, and I already know that tomorrow I won't have any time for writing, so it will most likely be Friday or Saturday when I get to post this part. I'll do the recap later.

    Naemon

For a couple seconds Naemon just stared at Alester Upton’s annoying mug, taking in deep breaths to calm down. Then he dropped the sword to the ground.

“You already lost, Lord Alester, just get over it.” He said coldly, and Alester’s grin disappeared. “I knew it.” He muttered. “No wonder your sister sits on the council and you do her bidding, I bet she is more a man than you will ever be.” The young lord’s words were bitter and mocking.

“Are you really that childish?” Naemon asked with narrowed eyes. “I help my Kingdom with the gifts I’ve been given, how about you? You are nothing but an arrogant bastard, put into a position you are way too immature to handle properly.” Alester took a step closer with anger in his eyes, but then they heard the voice of Lady Alerah.

“What is going on here?” She yelled, walking to them with quick steps from the doors of the main keep. Both Alester and Naemon stayed quiet, keeping their eyes at each other.

“Nothing to worry about, m’lady.” Ser Myle said, trying to sound relaxed. “The lads just had a little sparring match.” He explained, but Alerah ignored Myle, walking straight to Alester and Naemon. She looked at the two swords on the ground with shocked expression.

“Those are sharp blades.” She stated quietly, and Alester let out an annoyed chuckle. “Of course they are sharp!” He yelled at his mother with frustration.

“Have you lost your mind?” Lady Alerah’s words were quiet but powerful, and Alester was clearly taken-aback by them. “You could’ve hurt the Prince of Blackmont, the nephew of our King!”

“I assure you my Lady, there was never a real danger.” Naemon said calmly, looking at Alester who frowned at his words. Alerah turned to Naemon, placing her hand on his shoulder. “I am very sorry for my son’s behavior; I hope you can forgive our House.” She pleaded, and at least it sounded genuine. Naemon settled to giving her a small nod, and then the lady turned back to her son again.

“Ever since your brother died I’ve tried to help you, tried to make you a good lord, and yet you act like an irresponsible brat!” Alerah looked at her son with disbelief and disappointment. Alester looked slightly embarrassed and stayed quiet, but Ser Orwen stepped next to his lord.

“With all due respect my Lady, you are talking to your Lord.” Ser Orwen spoke with a stern expression on his face, putting emphasis on the last two words. “I am talking to my son, Ser Orwen.” Alerah replied strictly, leaving the knight in loss of words.

“It was just a duel.” Alester muttered grimly, but his mother shook her head. “It was stupidity.” She replied coldly. “And we’ll speak more about it later.” Now Alerah turned back to Naemon and Myle again.

“I assume you are planning to leave today?” She asked, her tone polite and friendly again. “Yes, well, we still need to change our gear, and we’d also be thankful if we could have some food for the road.” Naemon spoke, and Lady Alerah nodded to her with a kind expression. “I’ll arrange that, and you can also have a small convoy of our soldiers to make sure you will get safely to Starfall.”

“Sounds good.” Naemon replied with a smile, and so they walked back inside from the courtyard. Naemon gave one more look at Lord Alester, who stared at him with resentment.

    -

About an hour later Naemon and Myle stood at the high walls of Sword’s Edge, watching the Torrentine flow by while the soldiers were getting ready for the journey. They had already changed their clothes and packed their bags, and Naemon was more than ready to leave this place behind.

“Do you think he really tried to kill you?” Myle asked with pondering tone, and Naemon shrugged. “I don’t care.” He replied tiredly. “If he did, he failed. We are on an important mission, better just put all that happened here behind and move forward.” Myle nodded with a small grin. “Towards Starfall.” He said with a relaxed tone, dreamy look on his eyes.

“It’s a beautiful place.” They heard a familiar voice say behind them, and they turned to look at Alester who was walking towards them. “Certainly more beautiful than Blackmont.” The Lord of Sword’s Edge added with a smirk.

“What do you want now?” Naemon asked with a touch of frustration in his words. Alester took a couple steps closer, and both Naemon and Myle tensed up, ready to defend themselves.

“I only wanted to apologize.” Alester said, his voice surprisingly humble. “I didn’t fight with honor earlier, and that’s something I regret.” Naemon chuckled for this. “Oh, for a moment I thought you actually wanted to apologize for your rude behavior and mockery.” The Prince said with sour tone, and Alester raised an eyebrow.

“Perhaps I was rude, but I only want to say things as they are, and not veil my insults with pretty words and politeness.” Alester’s words were calm, but Naemon could spot the anger in them.

“But you don’t really like it when others say things as they are, aye?” Myle asked with a grin, but Naemon cleared his throat before Alester could answer. “Alright, alright. You apologized, your mother apologized, no need to continue this bullshit.” Naemon spoke with tired tone. “I’ll leave soon and hopefully we don’t have to see again, problem solved.”

“Actually no.” Alester replied with a subtle smirk. “I’m coming with you.” His words were decisive, and Naemon closed his eyes in frustration, while Myle let out a laughter full of disbelief. “What?” Myle asked with amused tone. “You want to be friends now, huh?”

“I want to lead my men as they escort you to Starfall.” Alester answered coldly. “And I want to be there to see whether King Vorian decides to help you, because if he does, House Upton will also be part of your father’s war.” Naemon sighed and gave Lord Upton a small nod.

“Alright then, it’s not like I could stop you from coming.” He said with monotone words, and Alester smiled, and for the first time it didn’t look like a completely hateful smile.

“We don’t have to be friends, but perhaps we could settle for a peace.” Alester suggested, and offered his hand for shaking.

Hm, it appears Alester really needed to get scolded by his mother to realize just how bad his behaviour in the last part has been. He dealt some pretty low blows, in this part as well, but luckily, Alerah is great. Now, I'm not entirely sure if he truly wishes to make peace, but even if he still holds resentment towards Naemon, I see little reason not to shake hands with him. Ignoring him would just needlessly anger him. On top of that, Naemon has just previously criticized him for acting childish, the least he can do is not acting childish himself now. They indeed don't have to be friends, but settling for a peace won't hurt.

[Shake hands with him] I will have to agree with everyone else here. It wouldn't hurt anything if Naemon shakes Alester's hand and maybe they could start to get along better now while ignoring Alester would no doubt just anger him further. Since House Upton will potentially be helping the Blackmonts in their war, it is most likely best if Naemon and Alester could at least try to get along with one another.

Impressive beard indeed! And you know what? Your drawings gets better and better, good job!

I think this is the face expression of his when he got scolded by mommy XD

challenge: start adding more shading in form of darker shades of colours (like you did on beard or Purple Ocelot and it made it that awesome) in addition or replacing black, I think this will help the works look even more realistic and acquire depth. :-)

  • Haha, I guess clean-shaven is typical for smug and cocky characters for some reason :D I think the beard however fits well with another trait in him: he is a pretty rough and aggressive guy, especially when it comes to his fighting style.

This was a clear one, Naemon will shake hands with Alester. Well, I could guess this one, ignoring him would've admittedly been a pretty weird choice in this situation. This choice, combined with the last one, determines what kind of relationship will Naemon and Alester have in the next chapter. The combination we went with - telling him he lost and then shaking hands - certainly gives Naemon a very honorable streak, but at the same time Alester's opinion about him stays somewhat same that it was when they met couple parts ago. Punching him would've actually gained the most respect from him, while cutting him would've made him seriously pissed and hellbent on getting revenge. That would've also been the only way to prevent him from joining this journey to Starfall, as he would've been too badly injured. Cutting Alester would've also been the only way to make Lady Alerah angry towards Naemon instead of her son - and she would've made sure Vorian would hear of it. Even Myle would've been slightly disappointed at his friend's actions, so it's safe to say cutting Alester would've been the worst possible choice in Naemon's storyline so far :p

Anyway, I'm working on a Gwendis part atm, which will be her last one on this chapter. I hope to get it done today, but I'm not sure if I can.

Recap: Last time we saw Gwendis (who is now removed from the council and locked to her chambers by her father) she saw a vision with Aisha the Dark Priestess. She saw all kinds of things there (pg. 125 from the doc if you want to read it again), and in the end she was asking from Aisha what did all this mean. For now Aisha didn't have answers for her, and their conversation was interrupted by Lyla Sand who seemed slightly pissed off to find Aisha in Gwendis' chambers. She suspected that Gwendis was planning something, and even made subtle threats. Next morning Gwendis found a thief/servant named Trentan going through her jewelry. The young man had somehow managed to slip into the Princess room, but Gwendis stopped him from leaving. She promised to him that if he could bring someone to Gwendis she wouldn't tell about this to Benedict, and when he asked who should he bring, you voted for Maester Mortin.

  • Well, he is 19 :p

    Gwendis

The Princess turned her decisive stare to the thief named Trentan. She put on a seductive smile, and the look on the young man’s eyes turned from nervous to confused.

“I need you to bring Maester Mortin to me.” She said with a friendly tone, and Trentan gulped. “Sure, I can do that.” The boy replied quietly, giving Gwendis a small bow.

“I hope so.” Gwendis' tone was calm. “If you do it, I will forgive you for trying to steal from me. Now, go.” Trentan nodded nervously, and turned away, quickly walking out of the room. As the door was closed Gwendis’ smile disappeared and she let out a deep sigh. She really hoped this thief would keep his word. A fool’s hope, perhaps.

Gwendis walked restlessly around her chambers, her mind troubled with all kinds of thoughts. She wondered what kind of news would Maester Mortin bring, she wondered if her brother was safe – and she remembered the blue eyes staring from the darkness. The Princess tried to forget what she saw yesterday, she tried to forget Aisha and her cryptic words, but it was not so easy.

Hours went by, and Gwendis was visited only by her handmaiden Tanya. Gwendis didn’t want to be rude, but she sent Tanya away as quickly as she could without coming off too suspicious. I can’t trust anyone.

Finally, many hours into the afternoon the door was knocked. Gwendis gulped, and walked to the door with a bad feeling creeping in. She placed her hand on the door knob, took in a deep breath, and opened it. On the other side stood Trentan and Maester Mortin, and Gwendis let out a sigh of relief. The maester looked slightly nervous, glancing around himself, so Gwendis gestured for him to walk in. However, as Trentan tried to follow Mortin, Gwendis stopped him.

“You stay out.” She said with calm and firm words. “Stay on guard, and if anyone comes, knock on the door twice.” Trentan sighed, but gave Gwendis a nod nonetheless. Gwendis flashed one more smile for the thief, before closing the door in front of him. Then the Princess turned back towards Mortin, who looked at her with doubtful eyes.

“You are a strong young woman Gwendis, you have always been strong.” Mortin said with a kind smile, and Gwendis settled to answering with a small nod. “I assume you invited me here because you want to know what is going on in the council. Am I right with my assumption?” The maester asked gently.

“You are.” Gwendis admitted with a tired sigh, taking a seat at the small round table. Mortin sat next to her, a tensed up smile on his face. “And I know you are taking a huge risk coming here, so I’m thankful that you did, I really am.”

“Don’t mention it.” Mortin said. “I have taught you and supported you since you were just a kid, there is no reason I’d abandon you now.” He spoke calmly, though Gwendis could hear that something was bothering him.

“Are there news from my brother?” Gwendis asked with nervous tone, but Mortin shook his head. “Nothing.” He answered and let out a small sigh. “But you sent him to Starfall, right? The road there should be relatively safe, and Vorian will take good care of him when he reaches his destination.” The maester spoke with reassuring words, and Gwendis gave him a nod.

“And what comes to the war, Hugor of Gravesend arrived with his forces recently, as well Ser Kegan and his men. The army will start its march towards Kingsgrave any day now.” Mortin explained this with a sad expression on his face. “And how about the problems on our own lands?” Gwendis asked quietly, keeping her eyes on the table. “They are yet to be solved.” The maester admitted with a sigh. “Some even speak of riots on the towns, and on several reports we’ve heard of a man named Karsan Taller who is a supposed leader of a peasant rebellion."

“A peasant rebellion?” Gwendis asked, slightly shocked. “And our army is marching away?” Mortin answered to the Princess with a nod, a grim expression on his face. “So far this Karsan Taller has done nothing drastic, but they say he is recruiting men on the Shepard’s Path. If this is true, it’s only a question of time before he will strike.” The maester’s words were hard, and Gwendis closed her eyes for a moment. There is nothing I can do about this, so better just forget it.

“You said there were no news of Naemon, but how about that marriage proposal from the Fowlers?” Maester Mortin gulped visibly at the question, which made Gwendis narrow her eyes. “Have you talked about it in the council?”

“We have.” Mortin answered, turning his eyes down. “And your father doesn’t want to marry Naemon to Isabella.” Gwendis chuckled in disbelief. “Has he lost his mind? We need this alliance!” She couldn’t believe that Benedict wouldn’t understand this.

“I’m afraid your father isn’t thinking quite rationally at the moment.” Mortin replied, scratching his head. “He says he doesn’t trust King Garrison, and doesn’t want his snakes into Blackmont. However, he will try to secure the alliance another way.” Now Mortin looked Gwendis to the eye.

“Me?” She asked with bafflement. “But Garrison’s heir is already married.” Mortin nodded with agreement. “And his secondborn is in the Citadel, but his thirdborn, Prince Desmor is still unmarried.”

“Thirdborn.” Gwendis said dryly and shook her head. “He will rather marry me to the thirdborn than marry Naemon to the only daughter of Garrison?” She asked, and Mortin nodded with a sigh. “It seems he wants to send you away as quickly as he can, and this is his way to do it.” For a moment they both sat there in silence, and Gwendis could feel tears coming to her eyes.

“What have I done wrong?” She asked with weak voice, but Mortin shook his head. “Nothing, my sweet Princess, you have done absolutely nothing wrong.” His words were warm, and he placed his hand on her shoulder. “I have always tried to give you good advises, and now… I would advise you to go to Skyreach if your father wishes so, and Garrison agrees to it. I don’t know Desmor, but his father is a reasonable man, and you would certainly have a happy life at Skyreach.” Gwendis wiped the tears from her eyes.

“Do you think father hates me?” She asked quietly, and Mortin shook his head with a soft smile on his face. “He loves you, very much.” Mortin spoke with reassuring words. “It is hard for him to send you away, and that is why he wants to be done with it as soon as possible.” Gwendis let out a sad sigh.

“It… it will be hard to leave all this behind.” She said with wistful tone. “As hard as it has been lately.” Mortin gave her an understanding nod. “You’ll survive, you always will.” He encouraged her, and a small smile was formed on the face of the Princess. I'll survive.

    No decision

  • Originally this part was supposed to be a bit longer and have a decision, but I decided to save that decision for the beginning of the next chapter.

Now, that is a twist! I remember that I brought such a possibility up a while ago, I think I have been replying to a comment from Tales-from-Telltale. It feels odd that I have been right with this, but at the same time, I am very interested in what is going to come. That said, this is perhaps the worst possible outcome for Gwendis, or at least she'll see it as such, since being the wife of a thirdborn will prevent her from having any influence at the court of Skyreach. Of course, technically Desmor is second in line to the throne, at least as long as Ferris doesn't have any sons, but still, this is going to be horrible for her. Still, in terms of families to marry into, the Fowlers are definitely a choice I approve of very much. Garrison is a smart man with a good heart for his people, Isabella is genuinely sweet and the way she thinks about her brothers makes me believe that neither of them is a bad person. And who knows, maybe ruling is not too far away for her, with a husband that has chances for the throne, but seemingly no real ambition. Gwendis could have gotten it way worse. The Yronwoods for example, while certainly an interesting possibility, would have been a huge wildcard, as we don't know anything about them personally. At least Yorick Yronwood sounds a lot less pleasant than Garrison Fowler.

Somehow, I have also gotten the impression that Benedict wanted to send Gwendis away as soon as possible because of the heated situation in Blackmont, with a peasant rebellion on its way and parts of the army deserting. If that's the truth, then Benedict's decision can actually only be respected. Getting Gwendis away from danger, while marrying her into a family that is known for being reasonable is actually not a bad move for him as a father. I hope Gwendis will understand this one day, even if the resulting marriage is probably going to be the least desirable thing for her. The only thing I'm truly sad of is that this will mark the end for interactions between the two. I enjoyed this strained relationship between two people who on the one hand seem to love each other very much, but who are disappointed at each other at the same time. Here's hoping that they will find a way to patch up their father-daughter relationship before Benedict gets defeated by Nymeria.

And I also noticed that this is going to be good for Isabella, which I am fine with. It'll mean Naemon won't have a suitable bride, but it might mean a happy end for Isabella and Jamison, as unlikely as it seemed. At worst, she's going to marry into the Yronwood's now and who knows what happens there, but with a bit of luck, Garrison marries her into the Dayne family, either with Malcolm or even Jamison. In any way, she won't be used for any creepy blood magic by Benedict's sorcerers, which is certainly a good thing. Neither is Gwendis going to be in danger of being sacrificed to the Great Other, which I am definitely relieved about.

Also, man, I remember Aisha's cryptic words towards Gwendis from ages ago:

“I saw your lonely soul, locked in a cage made of gold. I saw your tears, I heard your screams of rage.”

Locked in a cage, just like a bird would be. I don't know if that was a clever hint at the Fowler sigil or pure coincidence, but it is a nice detail!

Gwendis The Princess turned her decisive stare to the thief named Trentan. She put on a seductive smile, and the look on the young man’s

It feels odd that I have been right with this, but at the same time, I am very interested in what is going to come. Yeah, I think you did mention this possibility at least once :) And Ferris does have a son (he is just a toddler atm), I hinted at that in the last Isabella part ("Think about it, would you send your own son there?"). And it's not impossible for Gwendis to get to use her skills in politics, if she manages to somehow prove her worth to Garrison, but obviously sitting at the head of the council like she used to will be very unlikely.

Indeed, Skyreach doesn't seem like a bad place to live at. Of course right now it's under the threat of the Manwoodys, but the court itself is a pretty safe place.

Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that he really does love his daughter, so sending her away from danger is not far-fetched. Of course during a war time there is no place really where she could be completely safe, but Skyreach might indeed be safer than Blackmont.

The only thing I'm truly sad of is that this will mark the end for interactions between the two. I'm sad about this myself too, but don't worry, I will definitely use the last opportunity to give them interaction ;) Well, tbh, there could also be more opportunities for it in the future, who knows.

And I also noticed that this is going to be good for Isabella, which I am fine with. Haha, yeah, good thing you chose to stay loyal to Garrison because now there shouldn't be any bad consequences to it :D Of course Garrison will still look for a fitting husband for Isabella, but there won't be a rush for it now as the alliance with Blackmonts will be secured. And one thing I really look forward to writing is interaction between Gwendis and Isabella :p

Oh, and yeah, a spark of hope for Jamison's dreams was lit in this part XD

Locked in a cage, just like a bird would be. I don't know if that was a clever hint at the Fowler sigil or pure coincidence, but it is a nice detail!

Yes, Aisha indeed foreshadowed this... It'll be interesting to see if she still wants something to do with Gwendis ;)

Well as Liquid said, this was definitely a twist! I mean I figured Gwendis marrying Desmor was a possibility but it would not have been what I would predict would happen. I can no doubt agree that Desmor seems like the far safer choice for Gwendis' marriage rather than a Yronwood prince. I am also quite surprised about the Isabella and Naemon marriage seemingly not happening and it will be pretty interesting to see if Isabella and Jamison end up marrying or if Isabella goes to the Yronwoods. Plus there is the possiblity that Isabella and Naemon still end up marrying or she could potentially end up marrying Malcolm which I imagine would bring tons of controversy within House Dayne between Jamison, Malcolm, and Vorian. Overall I am absolutely enjoying this marriage storyline and it is pretty neat that Jamison and Isabella now have a glimmer of hope for getting what they want :D Plus there is also a great possibility for a Gwendis and Isabella interaction which would be really neat to see!

I am curious though, has the Desmor and Gwendis marriage betrothal been accepted or is it just Benedict's reply to the Fowlers at this point? I have to say that this little marriage storyline has been one of the most captivating parts of the story to me and it will be neat to see how it all ends up. This is yet another great part :)

  • At this point it's just a counter offer from Benedict, but knowing how important this alliance is for both houses (and how good offer this actually is), it's doubtful that Garrison would not agree to it.

Ah, I'm afraid that's it with her dreams of ruling over a house, at least if nothing unexpected happens. But Garrison is a smart man, maybe he will at least recognize her worth. Benedict just gave him a serious asset. If Ferris feels the same once he takes over the house, then Gwendis could potentially at least get something good out of this.

Indeed, Skyreach doesn't seem like a bad place to live at. Of course right now it's under the threat of the Manwoodys, but the court itself is a pretty safe place.

I have reread a few of Isabella's older parts and I guess Desmor is a guy Gwendis could get along well with. There probably won't be much love between them and I doubt either is going to be thrilled about the idea of marrying, but he seems easy-going and generally pleasant. She could have gotten a match way worse. The place itself sounds nice and with the combined army of Fowler, Blackmont and Dayne, the Manwoody threat should be eliminated.

Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that he really does love his daughter, so sending her away from danger is not far-fetched. Of course during a war time there is no place really where she could be completely safe, but Skyreach might indeed be safer than Blackmont.

I like to believe that was even one of his key ideas. I mean, he wasted a huge tactical advantage. With Garrison's offer, he'd get a suitable bride for his heir and, if things go worse, he'd always have Garrison's beloved child at his court, ensuring that House Fowler would never take actions against Blackmont as long as Garrison lives. On top of that, he'd still have Gwendis for a marriage alliance into another house. Now, he has sold his favourite daughter to a thirdborn and it means that she's in a position where she might be used against him. I think his growing paranoia against agents from the other kingdoms had something to do with it, but I like to believe that it was mostly fuelled by concern for Gwendis' safety, since he probably knows that the court of Blackmont is going to be an increasingly dangerous place.

Now I'm just curious what Benedict's plans for Naemon are. Isabella was basically the best match he could have hoped for, but there still is House Yronwood left. I was so sure that Gwendis would provide the connection between House Blackmont and Yronwood, but now there has to be something else. There still is Tanya Yronwod in the waiting list, in no way affiliated with Gwendis' handmaiden, and if she's an Yronwood princess in the right age, that might be another reason for Benedict to refuse a marriage between Isabella and Naemon, because he might have planned a bigger alliance. So that means we have concern for Gwendis' safety, his growing paranoia and maybe the possibility to get an even better alliance with Naemon, which all in all makes me actually understand his decision.

I'm sad about this myself too, but don't worry, I will definitely use the last opportunity to give them interaction ;) Well, tbh, there could also be more opportunities for it in the future, who knows.

Oh man, each of these interactions has potential to rip my heart to pieces D: I don't know if I should be excited or afraid for the feels I'm going to get out of this. At least they should have another opportunity for a talk at Blackmont and I think it is required that he attends the marriage. And of course there are always H&L parts =)

Haha, yeah, good thing you chose to stay loyal to Garrison because now there shouldn't be any bad consequences to it :D Of course Garrison will still look for a fitting husband for Isabella, but there won't be a rush for it now as the alliance with Blackmonts will be secured. Oh yes, Gwendis and Isabella. They are so different, yet have some similarities as well, I could see them becoming friends, which is going to be adorable. And with Isabella still being a potential candidate for a marriage alliance, maybe she will indeed end up marrying Jamison or Malcolm. It can only be hoped, because with Naemon no longer on the table for her, the Dayne's are the only possibility I'd see as absolutely pleasant for her. Especially Jamison of course, but Malcolm would definitely be a good husband as well.

Yes, Aisha indeed foreshadowed this... It'll be interesting to see if she still wants something to do with Gwendis ;)

I wonder about this myself. She probably knew it, with her visions and all. I'm still curious why she was so interested in Gwendis, there has to be more behind it. I don't think her interest will change just because this princess will be in another castle from now on.

  • No voting to close, but I just wanted to make a post before I go to sleep: The next part will be a Myke PoV, his last in this chapter. It's under work, and I hope to get it done tomorrow.

A very small recap: Myke, Ser Joran, Raina Serviene and the guardsman named Seban brought a deserter named Brack to Gravesend as a prisoner, and he was put to cell, later to be publicly executed. It came clear from the small conversation with the commander of the guard, Brennin Kell, that the town had recently been troubled with violence. Septon Kevan, who is also the mayor of the town, thanked Myke, Joran and Raina for delivering the deserter, and offered for them to stay the night in his mansion. However, Joran was opposed to this idea, saying they'd be more comfortable in an inn, and Myke agreed.

  • Yay, Myke! =)
