REVIEW MEGATHREAD - Episode 1 "Done Running"

edited August 2018 in The Walking Dead

Updating thread as the day goes on, PM me reviews.

4/5 - ScreenRant

"All in all, though, "Done Running" is a good starting point for the title. Telltale has a lot resting on The Final Season, and over the course of its four episodes it really needs to deliver, as otherwise the developer may find that no-one is that interest when its Stranger Things adaptation sees release. However, this is a very good jumping off point, and so a satisfactory end to Clementine's story seems tantalizingly close."

9/10 - wccftech

"The debut episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season is one of Telltale Games’ best efforts in quite some time. It builds its cast of likeable new characters with uncommon skill, lets you feel a glimmer of hope, and then tears it all down in devastating fashion. I’m afraid of what might come next for Clementine and AJ, but I can’t look away…The Final Season has already sunk its teeth into me."

88/100 - COGconnected

"In “Done Running,” Telltale gives us the Walking Dead game we fell in love with back in Season One, but with noticeable upgrades in gameplay and visuals. After such a fantastic opening episode, I’m excited to see not only how this story plays out, but how my actions as Clem will directly shape AJ and the narrative. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead franchise or Telltale games, this one is a must play."

4/5 - Attack of the Fanboy

"The Walking Dead: The Final Season - Episode 1 is a near-perfect opener for this latest series. It lives up to the lofty expectations set by its predecessors, while also evolving the formula that had grown stale as of late."

9/10 - Playstation Lifestyle

"I’ll be the first to admit, the last couple of seasons of The Walking Dead weren’t nearly as strong as the first. Finally, it seems, Telltale Games has figured out how to send the series off with a bang. It’s still in the early days, but this first episode will have fans chomping at the bit to see how their choices affect others, and of course if Clementine and AJ will make it out alive. The Walking Dead: The Final Season is a great start, and is hopefully a sign that fans will receive the finale the series deserves."

6.5/10 - IGN

"Meandering conversations and exposition make this first episode a slow, dull build."

https://tinyurl.com/TFSign

7/10 - GameInformer

"A Disappointing Start to Clementine's finale"
(It is worth keeping in mind that GameInformer tends to have a bias against Telltale)

Sucks because this is the only negative review I can find, yet this is gonna be the review people are going to be looking at the most

    Gameinformer: 7
'A Disappointing Start to Clementine's finale'
Gameinformer has never been a huge fan of Telltale, or choice games in general, the highest rating any WD episode has ever gotten was an 8.5 (S1 ep5)...Still, pretty disappointing two of the biggest publishers reviewing ep 1 gave it mediocre reviews

  • I guess most fans will love this season I am worried about the general public now...

  • I wouldn't worry TOO much just yet, even season 1 episode 1 got quite a few mediocre reviews when it first hit, and overall the reviews have still been very positive
Let's just wait and see how well the steam reviews do before we start freaking out

Your definition of mediocre is worrying. A 6 and 7 are decent/good

Well A 6.5 on the IGN scale is 'ok' and a 7 on the Game informer scale is 'Average' so yes they were both mediocre reviews
Every other review I've seen has been great though, almost all 9/10s or 4/5s

  • That's a problem with their score scales. That's not how ratings work, but whatever. Gameinformers scale has been off the rails for a while, and IGN are well...IGN. They liked the episode, so its not like a significant drop compared to other reviewers really. Be more worrying if we saw anything below a 5

  • Push Square: 7/10 (good)
'While we could take or leave the gameplay tweaks, particularly in the combat department, it’s already clear that the stakes are going to be much higher in this concluding season than the series’ previous disappointing outing – and for now, that’s enough for us.'
This review was MUCH more positive than IGN or Gameinfomer, just because of how their review system works. Their issues were mostly nitpicks, and overall they were impressed with the episode.

Obviously, IGN is satisfied only with rushed storytelling and shallow characters. We call it well paced, in IGN it goes by slow and dull. With score 6,5/10 for game, that evokes strong emotions in players and make us care about and love characters and score 9,6/10 for fucking childish and plain stupid Fortnite is an insult.

  • Naw, they want action and drama and shooting and getting through the slow parts as fast as possible. Not boring characters who will only serve as yummy meat for the zombies...

  • 6.5 is not negative, it's "okay" on IGN. If it were under 5, it would be negative since review scores go from 0 to 10. On aggregates, that would be a "mixed" score. I would give the episode 7.5 personally, which is not that far off anyway.

I will give 8'5/10 I think this episode was a lot better than all a new frontier, great new characters an awesome ending, tje choices were meh but its only the first chapter Im happy with the result

9.5/10 imo, way better than I was expecting. Dare I say even better than season 1 episode 1.

  • Louisentine will take over the fandom...just watch.

Gabentine is dead as well. Finally.

I though we could have bigger choices, hopefully we will get in episode 2! Overall great episode and WAY better than ANF! Finally they are focusing on character development, even though some people might think the “shot in the head” is getting repetitive.

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder why we even bother with 1 out of 10 scales when 7 is considered the average/disappointing range. Seriously, in what world is 7/10 supposed to be just 'average'? I am pretty sure that's what 5/10 is for. You know, the number right in the middle. The one that is completely neutral, for this exact reason.

Also, just to put this in perspective: IGN gave Ties That Bind a higher rating than Done Running.

  • Just finished the episode and can officially say IGN and Gameinformer either have terrible taste in games or just the reviewers don’t like this kind if game genre. The episode was phenomenal and completely topped all of ANF and that’s saying a lot because I enjoyed a new frontier.

  • IGN officially has a stick up their ass. The dead cells shit and now this, they simply aren't good reviewers. “Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film sense Empire!” Don’t make me fucking laugh...

  • Typical of IGN and Gameinformer. Bunch of ass kissing shill elitists. Nobody gives a f*** about their opinion. IGN with their pladgerist history, getting paid off by publications, some of the most idiotic reviews of all time, disbarring games for not having enough water. they don't even care about the games they review them fast for a paycheck. More skelentons in their closet than a halloween store. Not run by actual game fans of the genre. It's sad people still will go by that review and believe it 2018. Paid off, biased rats.

    F*** IGN.

  • Pretty good episode for me.
I'd say a 8.5 / 10. Would like more choices but I'm satisfied if they are less but more significant (Which I don't know if they are, I only played the episode once)

  • But...but, it is.

  • 10/10 i say.

  • Hi I'm back from the grave, I decided to give this a shot after a hiatus from Telltale. And although I'm a little disappointed so few choices get carried over, the personality indicator was pretty spot on for me. I prefer pragmatism and negotiation, realistic about death and losing loved ones, but open to positive discussion with new survivors without overt nihilism, so selfless was pretty spot on.

I'm actually really quite happy with what I played! It actually made a lot of steps towards things I was genuinely hoping for and discussed on the forums! It took a much more realistic approach to combat interactions, a slower, more thoughtful pace, a hub area, downtime for discussions with survivors, lots of improvements from a technical standpoint which are great as a PC player, a lot better optimized, it generally has left a very good first impression.

I felt the dialogue options were a lot better at expressing my viewpoints and how I want to roleplay Clementine, it allowed you to be realistic about death and not overtly idealistic, but also sympathetic and open to appreciating things at the same time.

Honestly I'm really surprised that the combat system was changed in a way very similar to what I was hoping for! The camera as well! It's too simple for my tastes, but the groundwork is there and it's a lot more interesting and suits the thoughtful grounded pace really well. As long as their isn't a return to sewer kung fu Jesus I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm still a bit jaded about Kenny, but I'm kind of glad the prologue glossed over the New Frontier stuff (cough cough motorcycle Clem), and the fates of the person you chose was left a bit open, so I can ignore that season more. It's pretty funny that the only choice they decided was worth carrying over was whether you spit on a guy or not.

It also seems less keen on killing people off for shock value without getting to know anyone, from my perspective, this many years into the apocalypse, killing other survivors shouldn't be treated lightly with how few there are left (especially with how trigger happy the cartoonish villains were in previous games).

I hope to learn more about what decides the different character states at the end screen (like batman S2), so that will be fun to look into.

  • HMPH!?

    6.5/10 - IGN
"Meandering conversations and exposition make this first episode a slow, dull build."

IGN obviously doesn't know what good story telling is. Don't listen to them Telltale! You guys have a good thing going don't screw it all up by letting that comment get to you guys. Anyone who thinks character development is bad thing in a narrative obviously wasn't paying attention in their literature and writing classes. I bet IGN wishes this game was a carbon copy of Fortnight lol.

This episode is easily one of the best episodes Telltale has ever made. And it is because of all of this "meandering exposition". The character and world building as well as all of the build up leading up to the finale was phenominal!

  • At the moment the Final season has a 97% very positive on steam.

  • So TFS episode 1 has opened up with a 7.4 on both the PS4 and the PC on Metacritic, which is...Decent, the main complaints are the combat and that this is all just stuff we've seen before, with Clem finding a group and then tradegy happening to said group, which I think is a really unfair complaint but I guess that's what happens when you make people that are over zombie games play zombie games. Descructoid gave it a 6, I think that was the lowest rating.
Overall though still pretty darn good reviews for the first episode
And that 97% on Steam tho ? It still might change, A New Frontier opened up with similar numbers when it first came out, but so far so good

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA no it isn't. It can barely be classified as a Star Wars film.

  • 8.5 from me, some flaws in plot points/story stuff, but other than that it was a great episode.

I don't understand why it's getting lower ratings than the first two episodes of ANF. I guess people have short attention spans ¯_(ツ)_/¯
