Suggestions on how to improve the forums

Dislikes don't really add anything, but negativity. So I agree that they should be removed.

    I disagree.

I think it's valuable to know what how the community is reacting to you. The only reason I could imagine needing to hide it is because the user had a lot of thumbs down, which might be an accurate reflection of how the community feels about the user. We need mechanisms to allow the community to express themselves if a user is trolling, being intentionally abusive, derailing conversations, etc.

    I mean, really...

how are they supposed to understand what makes for a good discussion forum if they never use a forum for general discussion?

How can they expect to implement Reddit's threaded system, Youtube's like system and Facebook's notification system without knowing if those are the sorts of things that people use outside of Reddit, Youtube and Facebook? How am I expected to know what parts I need to build a desktop PC when I only ever used a game console, and especially when my intention is to manufacture and program the circuit boards myself?

Alright. So as of now, I can't see my own personal dislikes tally or that of anybody else. Assuming that this is (or at least will be) true for everyone else, it's a solid step in the right direction for this forum. So thank you to Kevin and the web team for that. I would still prefer a pure like system, particularly a non-anonymous one, but this change does solve my major concern over the forum rating system.

My other major gripe is with the threaded format, which I think makes it very difficult to keep track of new posts when they are scattered across multiple pages and posted by multiple users, among other problems that others have pointed out. However, it seems unlikely that the general format will be changed any time soon, although something like what WarpSpeed was suggesting: "the ability for a poster to select threaded or flat (with more automatic quoting for flat threads), or for the reader to do so" does seem to be a feasible compromise that would alleviate many of the issues with the threaded format.

Other than that, my other suggestions in order of importance include 1) switching from Markdown to BBCode (and having a more advanced text options such as centering and emoticons), 2) having quote and multi-quote buttons for each post 3) reintroducing polls, and 4) having a way to upload my own avatar without using Gravatar. Are these things that are being worked on, will be worked on, or will not be worked on and if so why? Thanks.

  • Threaded discussion optionally viewed flat would not make sense, I'm afraid. Unless the message a post responds to is by default displayed as a quote in the post, it would lead to an absolutely incomprehensible jumble of messages. But as some posts in this forum are still rather long, doing it like that would lead to completely absurd walls of text. I believe this forum can be EITHER threaded OR linear, but not both at the same time at the user's wish. If the decision remains to have a threaded forum, the time displaced nature of the discussion means flat view is nonsensical. I would otherwise have argued for the same thing.

As to your other direct 'detail' suggestions from one to four, you've asked a similar question in the new website thread, which was left unanswered by official sources. I actually believe it's better that way, open communication or not. If Telltale made public a list of forum improvements they're working on, it would still be unclear when and in what way these improvements could be implemented. Let's just see the forum updates as a hopefully constant trickle of pleasant surprises. I must not answer which one of those ideas is seriously considered, but maybe I can say this much: I haven't seen these suggestions for the first time, and I am feeling a definite behind the scenes enthusiasm for tweaking the details of the forum mechanics.

Ditto. It seems to be something that's been turned on and off over the last day or so. I've seen times when I've been able to see my own dislike count but not others, but now it appears that all dislike counters have been hidden.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of likes / dislikes tallying on your profile. I think it has merit for individual comments (especially if there's the option to highlight well-liked posts or hide well-disliked posts) but I'd much prefer that individual contributions be rewarded through a kudos system, where kudos can only be given by moderators / site staff / trusted members for valuable contributions to the community, for insightful posts, etc.

As for the threaded discussions, they do have merit, but they don't work well in the current implementation. The current implementation works better for flat discussions, though a much more advanced quote / comment linking function is required.

  • @Vainamoinen I see what you mean. However, that only presents an issue in the case where the reader chooses the way the discussion is viewed. In the case where the original poster is allowed to decide whether to make his/her discussion threaded or flat, the result would just be like what we have now: a mixture of linear and threaded discussions. This would give the users more freedom to decide which discussion type works best for their topic.

Another way to address the problem I described might be to keep the threaded format but to make it so that a new comment to a thread "drags" the entire thread to the latest page of the discussion. This would afford us the efficient nested structure of the threaded format but preserve the chronological aspect of the linear format (without having to rely on the extremely flawed "new comment" button). Basically, there should just be some way of quickly identifying if and where new comments have been posted without having to sift through pages and pages of comments looking for those with slightly darkened edges around them.

I'm happy to hear that there has been some previous discussion of the points I brought up. And I understand why publicly listing improvements still in the works might not be the best idea. Perhaps instead, we could have a sort of "version list" that identifies the updates that have already been implemented in our new forum. Anything to give us a sense of a positive trend would be much appreciated, at least by me.

I'm all for Telltale actually advertising those changes when they've been made. Like a short news bulletin. I mean, there was no official news that e.g. the message character cap was greatly increased etc. Something that continuously confirms the forum to still be in active development.

    Here's how it could work.

Say this feature exists, and Kevin has posted a message that says, in its entirety, "I completely agree." He didn't quote anything. You're not sure if it's part of the thread suggesting Telltale aggressively bid for the rights to make Tales of Monkey Island Season 2, or if it's part of the thread that says the real reason Telltale incorporated in California was because that's where In-N-Out Burger is located.

At the top of each message could be a link or icon that means "View in thread." Click it, and the forum switches back to threaded mode, with that message in context. From there, you could "View flat" to return back to the mode you were reading in.

Another variation could just insert the message it's a reply to in the stream above it temporarily, and then you could insert the message that was in reply to, and so on, by clicking a link at the top of each message. Those would only show for you, and only while you're on that page.

On the home page, wouldn't it make more sense to list the three "Categories" under each section, instead of the three latest discussions under the "General" category?

I noticed that the Story/Spoiler Discussion category of the Walking Dead section is quite vacant right now. Granted, that may have something to do with just about everyone moving to the unofficial fan forum, but another part of it might just be that people don't even realize that its there since none of the topics under there show up on the Community home page (which I assume is to prevent spoiler topic titles).

I just feel that if it's too difficult for new users to find the Story/Spoiler section for TWD or TWAU, they'll just start posting those topics in the General discussion section. Which, considering the fact that we're kinda low on mods right now, is not great.

  • Indeed, separate general/story discussion forums for TWD can't be maintained any more. These sections WILL mingle. Thankfully, it's not that necessary now for Season 1 (because, really, everyone's spoiled to the brink already ;) ). The story discussion forum was an idea we tried out mid season, with rather mixed results. I've never been the biggest fan of the system, but dived into it anyway.

I don't think there will be such a separate forum for Season 2 or other future games. You now can mark your spoilers with the actual episode, which is an interesting start, and according to puzzlebox, there are quite a few ideas in the works to make the new spoiler marks far more sophisticated (including, but not limited to ideas how to de-spoiler thread titles).

  • There is a lot of lag when typing in text fields here on an iPhone. I don't experience this lag on other websites. Also, there was never this kind of lag on the previous forum version.

What is the reason for this lag? Is this specific problem currently being addressed, and when does the Telltale web team expect to have it fixed?

It is my understanding that this is the first such message board built by the Telltale web team. I hope they consult with more experienced programmers if they are having trouble implementing the needed fixes, since I think Telltale customers and fans deserve a community forum that works better.

Thank you for hearing my feedback, and I look forward to (hopefully) big improvements here in the future!

  • There is still no "Chuck" in the Walking Dead stock avatars. This is unacceptable.

  • The smallest thing I'm asking for is to completely remove the like/dislike bar. I'd rather people voice their opinions on your post rather than up-vote it, which basically says "I AGREE.THIS!" and also down-voting it, which sends the message of "your post was stupid, I'm going to move on."

Oh, and it's not really helping if you just remove the number of dislikes on your profile. And this is coming from a user ridden with tons of them.

  • edited October 2013

The few Walking Dead users who are left have stopped trying to make new discussion threads to discuss the game or sort through the boards to find the old ones and are now just having one continuous discussion about favorite characters and favorite episodes right in the middle of the Season 2 Release thread.

    So that's a thing.

Maybe look into making it easier to navigate to/find posts in the various categories listed under each topic?

Oh, and it's not really helping if you just remove the number of dislikes on your profile. And this is coming from a user ridden with tons of them.

I believe the removal of the 'thumbs down total' number from the profile WAS helpful. This last month, I tried to exemplify how users who are just voicing pure, helpful yet somehow unpopular facts in a respectful tone get voted down on a routine basis, and you were among the top five of community members who met my eye in that respect. What I considered absolutely disastrous primarily was that every single thumbs down tantamounted to a permanent ugly mark in the profile record.

We've had some members who were victims of thumbs down trolls, and these trolls loved to target the thumbs down total. The step from downvoting a particular single opinion to downvoting a particular member personally was next to nonexistant. I'm really thankful that this was changed. It now just doesn't make sense any more to the trolls to roam a user's profile just to give him thumbs down on every comment that member made, because that would in fact water down the negativity the troll wanted to express towards a particular stance of that user.

For me personally, the situation is 55% rectified with this.

As to the remaining 45% ... well, I do agree with you essentially. I don't think I've seen many instances in which either thumbs down or thumbs up on individual comments DOES work. Abuse is still plenty possible; snowballing of negative and positive votes still a central problem; and just like on reddit, displaying a flat out mob mentality tends to gather positive instead of negative votes. In my opinion, the click on the thumbs down button is too easy, too direct, too impersonal and too anonymous to not foster abuse.

If the entire negative votes would be removed and only the thumbs up remained, I think it COULD work somehow. This would be more or less the same kind of reputation handling as post count, with just a bit of opinion popularity in the mix.

can we have a spoiler section in the wolf among us forums like what happened in the walking dead forums? because whole threads that are just full of hidden posts is really difficult to navigate, especially threaded ones because clicking on the scroll to new comment button doesn't open spoiler threads

Oh no, don't ask for that PLEASE! I didn't much care for that spoiler section last time, it was hard to maintain as such even with vbulletin's mod tools. What Telltale is going for is a much more complex and definitely more functional system... which hopefully leaps out of its blueprints right into digital reality, like, tomorrow. ;)

What I've suggested behind the scenes as a temporary remedy for these literal forests of hidden posts is this: If the original poster of a thread declares his entire thread 'spoilers for episode 1', it should not be possible for community members to establish the same tag for their individual posts. If at the entry level of the thread I decide to view spoilers for episode one, it just doesn't make sense to confirm that decision another hundred times by revealing those hidden messages repeatedly.

Users attempting to mark their individual post 'episode 1 spoiler' should get a message that the entire thread is already marked as such and their kind spoiler consideration is not necessary here.

can we have a spoiler section in the wolf among us forums like what happened in the walking dead forums? because whole threads that are just f

  • yeah that suggestion sounds good, because then everybody would know that it is a spoiler thread and didn't need to mark their own as a spoiler, but they need to sort out that new comment function as well because it does not automatically reveal spoiler threads.

maybe it would be good to have personal spoiler options in the profile, like some kind of tick box to say automatically reveal all the wolf among us episode 1 spoilers

You left between Seasons, when the forum was not that populated. Now TWaU is just out while anticipation strongly builds for TWD Season 2.

The percentage of "trolls" has not increased while naturally, a larger crowd contains more of them. It's that simple. ;)

The 'merge' function was one of my favorites in vbulletin!! ;)

Indeed, the TWaU as well as the TWD forums gather repeating threads at an alarming pace. The lack of a merge function is one thing, the other is the community's lack of features to properly search for similar threads. I hope we'll see definite improvements in the months to come.

The only thing mods can do at the moment should a repeating thread pop up is to link to former discussions of the same topic (while battling the search function to even do that) and then close the new thread, which always feels like an affront to the one who opened it. Not a great way to make new friends for mods, I can tell you. :(

  • can we have a "reveal discussion" button on the popup bar next to the "scroll to new comment" button? because it is annoying to have to scroll up a blank page to get to the reveal discussion button after using the feed to get to a discussion

  • Well I really don't like this new layout of the forums. It had a nice section for each game and General Chat at the top. Now TWAU forums and TWD forums take up almost the entire thing and General Chat is reduced to a tiny space at the very bottom. Why would TWD and TWAU forums need that much space?

  • We desperately need an ignore feature. Lets say these is someone in this community who bugs us, alot. Borderline harassment. Mods don't do anything. I'd at least like the luxury of ignoring their posts. I'm sure the same can be said vice verse. It's a needed feature so we don't have to read their posts.

Perhaps their posts can be hidden. It's simple. When you select to ignore someone, it hides their posts. Kinda like how spoilers does but against a certain person. Also while I'm at it, the thumbs down feature is not required. Replaced with a "LOL" feature. All the thumbs down, does is enforce negatively. Which may be the reason, facebook never added in it.
