People need to vote more carefully because the top five really stink. No offense to whoever wrote them but I don't think they are worthy of being in-game.

I'm not sayin' mine is so much better though lol

I know there's good ones out there
! Come on people don't vote it unless you're willing to see it in the game..

I quite like "He sunk my battleship."

After attempting to influence voting, I have determined that the only winning move is not to play.

Ooh, I was the Telltale pick for week 1!!

:( I didn't get in. I still had my last one to throw out. Ahhh well, maybe next time. At least we have the release of the next chapter to look forward to.

Well, some people use things like facebook and the likes to promote their own sentence among other people who don't even know what Monkey Island is, asking to vote the "Yes!" on the linked page as a favour. Sadly I'm not making this up, I bumped into a user who did this sort of thing (and he was one of the top five in the previous two weeks), and I'm assuming that other people are doing this also.
So unfortunately the quality of the sentences isn't what this contest is really about, but I thought this was common knowledge, and I suppose the Telltale staff knew about this. If things stays the way they are now, this will probably be the only way to win the remaining week for anyone who want to. I'm afraid I can't win anyway, since I don't have any account for facebook, myspace and that sort of things.

That's what telltale wants actually. The whole point of this contest was to get people to blog about ToMI. I can't really blame Telltale for trying to promote their game. It's a lot better than the scummy promotions EA has been doing with twitter.

But yeah, the result is that utter crap wins. Most the people who are clever enough to come up with something funny, are the same sort of people who do not want to bother/waste their friends time with irrelevant posts on facebook/twitter. I stand by that statement.

Heh, I know, that's why I was assuming they knew about this sort of things, and I can't blame them about it either. The only thing that I find unfair is that the winner will have his/her name on the credits, that's too much of a prize for a (possible) spammer.
  • edited August 2009
I didn't realize they get their name in the credits. Imagine getting you name in the credits for coming up with that stupid Bush joke which won? Or that Murray joke which doesn't even make sense.

No kidding. No offense to people who're still in the process of learning English, but those last two winning entries sound like they were written by people who're still less than fluent. The first week's winner, though, is passably amusing, though not the best that I saw, in my opinion.

Come on people, don't panic. Telltale won't put any rubbish lines in their game!

Naturally I would like to have mine in the game, and I've seen a few that would be funny, but I gotta say I like this one. I have a visual in my head of hearing that line, then the camera pans over and we see a cartoon Ron with a goofy grin waving frantically. :D Or maybe he just winks and we see a little twinkle in his eye. :D

    You do realize that

    1. It has nothing to do with the conditions of the contest (line must be how Guybrush has wronged someone)

    2. It's not very clever, and most critics agree that meta, fourthwall references are when series start going downhill

    3. Ron Gilbert would probably think it's stupid

They do too, usually as they are having a huge statues of themselves sculpted for their great works to humanity.

Most, if not all, Telltale games have a powerful breaking of the 5th, never mind the forth, wall running through them. Strongbad, Wallace and Gromit, Sam and Max and Monkey Island are well known for their self referencing gags and in-jokes - It's part of the reason why we all love them so.

I wish I'd gotten a chance to enter this into the compo before it headed:

"Arg, he said he'd have me 3 sheets to the wind, drinking Grog as fast as he could pour em' - turns out is was 5 walls and a win, on some fancy online forum!"

Don't worry; there's no way a dumb line will end up in the game. The rules state that TellTale reserves the right to override the popular vote if they feel the winning entries aren't up to their standards.

Also, fourth-wall references have been around since the beginning (I assume you are referring to any reference to the fact that it's a game). For instance, the famous "Don't pay more than $20 for a video game," or when Guybrush turns to the player after getting ripped off by Smirk, or when the pirates ask Guybrush to "play along" when he asks them why they talk so funny.

I created a sort of fourth-wall reference, but didn't get a chance to submit it (it was going to be my finale for the fourth week).

"He followed me conversation in the wrong order! Drove me intern half-mad when she was transcribing it."

Yeah I know it didn't follow the rules, but I still thought it would be funny. But clearly it wouldn't.

I personally think fourth wall humor can be very funny when executed properly. I don't like the Ron Gilbert line though, not because I don't necessarily think it's funny, but because it presumes the player knows too much about the background history of the game series. I've known several people who are fans of the Monkey Island series who've played through all four games who don't really know who Ron Gilbert is. I kind of think modern comedic adventure games need to keep references to designers and their own company names to a minimum. It just feels done to me.

YES. But, since it's the last week anyway, this advice comes a bit too late.

Yes. I do not like the way this whole thing was set up. It is really rather dumb.

utter crap is a very good way to describe the final five. :)

I know! It is annoying how dumb these final five really are. The bush one is just plain moronic, the murray one does not make sense, the only GOOD one (not great, but good) is the leather jacket one.
  • edited August 2009
I voted for the eye one. It was pretty clever and fits with Monkey Island. The leather jacket one is good too. I agree with everyone about the george bush one (which has NO business even NEAR a monkey island game) and the last one (my brain still hurts from reading it numerous times). If the george bush one makes it in the game, i will have lost a great deal of respect for Telltale Games, even MORE for Lucasarts for not running damage control on a stupid quote to be put in one of their most beloved franchises, and for all the supposed "fans" of Monkey Island, Telltale, and the resurrection of the adventure game genre.

I'm gonna give Telltale the benefit of the doubt and assume they'll only put in something worthy, something submitted that they liked, no matter who really 'wins.'

And if not, hint hint. ;)

I saw the finalists and realized that contest spamming is a young man's game. I'm too old to ask my friends to care about my quarter of a second of glory in a game none of them will ever play.

My bad then, didn't know about this. But with the recent change TT applied on the contest's last week, it's not like the fans will have much choice anyway. I also wonder how many votes they'll overlook if necessary.

I...I'm not sure I want to find out who the winners were. The reality may be so awful I may have to be removed to a psych ward.
  • edited August 2009
As I posted in the other thread my guess is the bush or crappy murray one was the victor and they're debating now vetoing or not vetoing the line.
  • edited August 2009
"Leather Jackets" will win*. The rest will be insulfeated.

    *Just an educated guess.
  • edited August 2009
There were some terrible entries, absolutely awful ones! But at least we've got some good ones in the top few, but we've still got some crap such as the Bush and the Murray ones! I think that allowing the fans to vote was a mistake, Telltale just should have picked out all of their favourites as it is their game after all. The problem with the whole voting thing is that it's more of a contest of how many online friends the entrant has than the actual quality and humour of the entry which is why Telltale just should've picked 'em all! Although I do like the rest of them and hope that one of the good ones will win, I really don't want a line that doesn't make sense or a lame Bush joke in one of our precious Monkey Island games!

You mean the one which is actually re-using a joke done in every Monkey Island game including ToMI chapter 1 ? Just sayin'.
