[I have never understood this. I have yet to play a Monkey Island game that was "dark." [/B]
MI2.
Leave out the jokes and it gets pretty scary.
The actual story behind it all has always been pretty serious (well, except in escape... which is part of why this one basically sucked, really).

Each game pushed the envelope a little. Once we had undead and zombies and those were a little dark, then we got monkey robots, tourists and now it's mermaids. And as we all know, mermaids are kind of lame and girly these days. Its really hard to take them seriously. If they really add mermaids, I want them to be darker.

That's the point though, there were way more jokes than "dark" moments. I have never played a Monkey Island game for story, and I honestly don't care what the story is, as long as it doesn't involve giant robots.
As long as the characters stay in character and I can have some good laughs and solve some good puzzles, that's all I expect from Monkey Island.

I wouldn't dislike a mermaid like the bow figurehead lady from EfMI. I mean: cute girlish like, rude truck-driver talking. But it would be an old, wasted joke.
well to each their own, but you can't say there was NO story.
And even tho there WAS plenty of jokes indeed, they still remained somewhat secondary to the plot.
I think it's this constant mix of "dark, scary voodoo stuff" and "silly jokes about three headed monkeys and vegetarian cannibals" that made the first games so great.
A big part of sailors folklore is things like mermaids, sea hags, giant squids, abominable snowmen.
In popular culture, think of Popeye (sea hag, alice the goon, jeep) and the movie Cabin Boy. But sailors lore goes far back. Read The Rime of the Ancient Mariner---and all the way back to The Odyssey
Monkey Island 2 scared me! Especially in the graveyard when Largo says it feels like somethings going on at his grandfather's grave. Man, I could never get out of that graveyard quick enough. And in the tunnels at the end - everytime Lechuck walked in I would be REALLY scared.
It'd be my guess that either Spinner Cay is a mer-peopled settlement or it's the mer-people laying siege to it (in other words, a blockade). What I want to know is who will incur the mer-people's wrath, Guybrush or de Singe?
There was a troll in Monkey Island 1. The fact it was George Lucas in costume was a gag; so I don't count that, though.
The troll was a parody of King's Quest. I always found clever the way Secret of Monkey island mock the usual tricks of "classic" adventure games from the get-go
I really like the colour scheme of villagey concept art.
I second this, as well as Secret Fawful's link to Zelda. I think I might go as far as to say that this is my favourite piece of Telltale concept art ever. Awesome!
These series are really starting to shape their own style artwork-wise. I'm really pleased with how things are looking. It's very much a Monkey Island-esque style, and probably as close you could come to the CMI style in these japanese-influenced days.
Very unique, very pleasing and relaxing. Just like Monkey Island should be.

Merepeople were not always shown as good in folklore, mermaids would sometimes sing to people (like sirens), distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or run their ships aground, it is said that they forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite.

Well... not being a native speaker i actually always thought "mermaids" and "sirens" were the same thing
I even wouldn't have said "siren" in english cause i thought the word didn't even exist in english.
So i'm just being curious, but would you please explain the difference ?

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were three dangerous bird-women, but some languages use the same word for both bird and fish creatures, such as the French word Sirène.
or right...
I think depending on the different myths, sirens can be of both the "bird" and "fish" type, tho... So i still always saw the two as being the same basic things.
But whatever... If i got it right, then "sirens" are the evil-sailor-attracting- creatures, and "mermaids" are just the silly fishmen thingies ?

Sirens were the main evil ones, but mermaids also did have some evil traits aswell.
okay, so i'm still a bit confused, but don't bother, i'll just blame it on my stupid language (which IS french, by the way )
I'll just go and sleep now anyway. If i can still think about it tomorow i'll just go and check wikipedia or something
Thanks anyway

Well, i actually did think sirens and mermaids were pretty much the same, but i looked on wikipedia, that were i got all the info wrote.

That's correct. As a native English speaker, I've only ever heard the word "siren" used specifically in reference to the evil ship-sinking women of Greek mythology. The word "mermaid" refers to any mythical creature with the torso of a woman and the tail of a fish.
On a semi-related, but possibly off-topic note, are there separate words for "monkey" and "ape" in French, or are they both referred to as "les singes?" It seems like that would get really confusing... Or do you differentiate between the two by saying something like "le singe avec queue" and "le singe sans queue?"

As a non native English speaker, I'm not sure about the difference between ape and monkey. Could you clarify it for me? Couldn't it be The Planet of the Monkeys and Ape Island? Nah, it wouldn't sound good in either case.
By the way, in spanish we only have the word sirena for both sirens and mermaids.

Wait...
What if the main bad guy was actually...

Although I was about 4 at the time...

Really makes me wonder what's gonna happen there
Looks like something out of Zelda. All I can think of are the Zoras.
That's probably
Now, if they start adding Orcs, Goblins, Elves and Hobbits I'll be upset.

OOOOps, that's some pretty hefty spoilers there! Careful!

No, really? :P

becuase it doesn't have a pirate ship in there somewhere?
