I had a few little glitches towards the end of the chapter:

    * on the Screaming Narwhal there was a floating cannonball a little behind my cannon. I could walk right through it!

    * one time when
my mast was destroyed with a cannonball, the other ship then disappeared as usual
and there was a random floating door in the sky left from it.

    * at the end, while exploring and trying to figure out what to do next
I went back to Spoon Isle and LeChuck was no longer standing at the cannon! However, when I clicked on the cannon Guybrush still said his line as if LeChuck was there (something like "I'm not messing with him while he's got a cannon").
Leaving the scene and coming back didn't fix the glitch either. But it didn't matter.

Anyway, all in all I really enjoyed it! I thought that the first chapter had some great puzzles, but the puzzles in this one were good too. Challenging but not too difficult. I completed it within 24 hours of downloading the installation file, and did it without hints, but I still found certain puzzles that caught me out and had me thinking and exploring for quite a while.

The humour, especially the dialogue, was amazing in this chapter though! Music snippets from previous Monkey Island games (
    Largo LaGrande's theme
    ,
"A Pirate I Was Meant To Be"
...) some awesome one-liners from Guybrush and a lot of the other characters,
    101 fish jokes
    ,
    Guybrush talks to a rock
, and some classic cartoon humour when
Guybrush throws a coconut behind him, only to have it bounce back on the rubber tree
    .

My brother came to get a sneak peak of the game shortly after I'd started playing it last night, and we both laughed loudly on a number of occasions.

    Presentation was great too.
The battle right at the beginning was an epic start to the chapter alone.
And, not the first to mention it I know, but the transition to the map on the ship was really nicely done too. Character animation is spot-on. Guybrush's facial expressions when talking to other characters and reacting to things were just priceless! And great soundtrack too. The happy major-key version of LeChuck's theme put a smile on my face. Lovely background music at Spinner Cay too.

    Two thumbs up, Telltale!! :D

Very very pleased. My review: http://flaglima.com/?p=1587

Can't wait for next chapter, will be tough to match the humor from this last one!

Just also to say, I'm glad Telltale have sorted out the character model cracks that were appearing in both ToMI Ep1 and WaG Ep4, as they looked really bad.

I think this episode actually has the best voice acting of all the MI games from Dominic Armato, his delivery on lines like the ones about the mermaids is perfect. I like the voice actor for the librarian too, although I can't remember who it is.

Couldn't enjoy it...had to switch the sound completely OFF - voice compression was killing my ears and blowing up my brain (((

No new treasure hunting maps :( Just started it and the first thing i noticed was the "Treasure Hunting" option in the menu was gone :(
Can't wait to play it though :D:D

Ok...time for me to submit my overall opinion...

I've been a Monkey Island fan since back in the day... I loved the new effort and I understand that this is one story in 5 parts...the first one was quite interesting and I was expecting that chapter 2 will continue that.
IMHO chapter 2 was not cool at all... most of the puzzles...were so obvious , I'd rate humor 4 out of 10 and no comment about Le Chuck!!! Seriously in the third one try harder ...!!!

    is there a demo?

Love the 2nd part just as I enjoyed the 1st part (episode :P)
Had to use Telltale's walkthrough someparts in the game to, even though i do not like using walkthroughs and i usually only use them on JRPG og RPG games where you don't get the exact location, cause sometimes it can get really hard to know what to do then.
But when i play games from Telltale it's alot of walkthroug, though most of the times I use it to check if what i thought was right, in that way I don't have to go back and forward.

    Can't wait for episode 3.

I kinda go with sybexnyc point of view as far as the "so-obvious-what-to-do-next" part goes. Though all in all, I liked episode 2 better than the first one.
I loved the humour, loved the epic quality, I personally also think that the whole ambience of this part of the game was better (i.e. music, places, lighting of sunset throughout the whole episode, involvement and interaction between all three main characters). TTG suceeds in building up great suspense about the plot development and "the plot has thickened" indeed.
Yet, especially in the end, I was a little irritated by this "mast-is-broken-->go-to-Spinner-Cay-to-get-a-new-one-and-return" - sort of puzzle thingie. I also found, that after the scene with the Mer-Leader giving you the combined artifacts, it was a bit annoying to have to steer Guybrush to the dock just to do the throwing manually. Why not include that bit in the cut scene? It's not that this bit was so much of a puzzle to solve.

Minor complaints thus - the game really was outstanding. Yet I would be dissapointed if that obvious-puzzle-scheme accumulated. I mean, we're still talking about a game here, not a click-your-way-through movie. ;-)

Oh, and something completely different, referring to a possible return of Murray: Remember the voodoo lady in EP 1 saying: "Guybrush Threepwood - the skull was right, there is no escape!" and then saying that this vision might be future OR past? I suddenly remembered that in the end of CMI, when Murray (thus "the skull") sits on a shelf at the carnival of the damned, you can pick on him until he actually says: "That's it. You're cursed now. Man, you will be sorry about this." So maybe Murray it behind all this? Just an idea. ;-)

I don't know if this was mentioned already, but I had a few bugs:
    • On first meeting her, Elaine wouldn't walk, but just float in Guybrush's direction and from him.
    • There was a clearly visibly vertical line on the sky, probably where two images where supposed to join.
    • After the siege is off, I was able to get the turtle artifact another time. It's there in the altar, can be retrieved and will show in the inventory.

    The
sword fight with Morgan at the start
has been the highlight of the series thus far for me.

    I love that they have
added possible romantic rivals for both Guybrush and Elane. (Morgan/LeChuck.) They are obviously going to test Guybrush and Elane's relationship sometime down the line.
I love it and I can't wait for the next chapter. (And this time is better be a month, TellTale. None of this month and a half nonsense!)

AMEHZIN!! Loved it guys - puzzles are still a wee bittie too obvious for the seasoned Pirate but an excellent looking and sounding game nonetheless. LOVED

They can't afford a second delay like the one between EP1 and EP2 anyway since it'd already be October then right? :D

I really loved part 2 too. A lot of minor flaws from Episode 1 have been fixed. There are more character models, although you can still easily hand pick the ones used which I think is still a shame. But the music is excellent, the lighting and atmosphere is just genius. And the whole story just feels epic! I love it.
I love the fact that you weren't afraid to stretch some things,
LeChuck being friendly, the cutting of the hand, the merfolk
, it makes the game really unique.
Also the beginning was the best! It really had me on the edge of my seat from the first moment on. The intro with the tarot cards was really good too! (I saw in the credits that this wasn't Leilani Jones Wilmore, the replacement did an excellent job. Was it her in Episode 1?)
Really a very good game! Telltale just keeps topping itself!

Some things that might be worked on.
-The re-use of character models, it's done much better in this game, but realising that some pirates look almost the same just gets you out of the game world for a second.
-The voice compression. Especially Elaine's. First I thought it was my speakers. But you can really hear the compression just... squeek... That was a major setback for me.
I hope it's fixed in the dvd version.
    - I don't really know what to think about the interface, sometimes I used the mouse, then I'd start using the arrows out of frustration, but that didn't really do it for me either.
    - Was this another voice actor for LeChuck? Although he did a pretty good job, I just plain miss Earl Boen. His voice (especially for Demon LeChuck, was far more menacing). I'd like to have heard his human nice LeChuck.

With all due respect, I Earl Boen did a brilliant job as Demon Pirate LeChuck and as Charles L. Charles but I really don't think his Human (nice, not CLC) LeChuck would have worked. The new guy has it down to a T.

Besides, Mr Boen has retired and only did SMI: SE as a special favour.

I like the new LeChuck, especially the one from chapter 2 (notice that chapter 1 has a different LeChuck). But Boen's LeChuck had a very specific sound. This guy does a great job at imitating that, and his human version is downright hilarious! It's just that I'm really perfectionistic about voices, and I would've loved to have Boen back on it. It would've completed the original CMI cast.
And I don't know if CMI:SE was a special favor. I read in an interview that Telltale have talked with Earl Boen and that he was pretty interested in doing it. I guess they just couldn't get the finances right or something.

That was my first thought until I heard he retired. If his fee wasn't too outrageous, TT should have opened their wallet a bit more. MI is probably selling a lot better than they'd hoped (who could have predicted the glowing reviews both episodes so far have received? As well as ep1 being the most downloaded game on WiiWare at one point).

Exactly. That's one of the only points about which I feel kind of... cheated.
The feeling will always be there that we got a lesser actor, although I quite like his performance, than we could've got.

I can see your point, much like your favourite band undergoing a lineup change and sounding different on their next album but still good.

But in the case of acting in a computer game, it has to feel natural to the player for the character to sound like that, and I think Kevin couldn't have played it better - he's almost a dead ringer for that Earl Boen sound, he's saying the lines right and it's very natural in that it fits what we see on-screen.

We might not have Earl Boen but I think we have the next best thing. :)
  • edited August 2009
It's also possible that Earl Boen, despite being not in our generation and therefore harder for him to get pleasure out of these games, actually enjoys playing an extreme, defined character like Demon Zombie Ghost Pirate LeChuck.

So when TT told him what they were planning to do with him (ie. turn him human and give him a nice demeanour), it's possible he said something along the lines of he wouldn't enjoy the role as much and as such would expect a higher fee. Just fishing about here for a decent explanation.

I totally loved the new episode.
I keep admiring how telltale keeps making up these creative riddles and even surprises me once more, when they tie together previous riddle elements again. A wonderful piece of Art!

And in the first 2 episodes not a single piece of riddle that didn't make sense. It's all very fair (in comic-logic).

Also the humour is always just right. This is where most games fail, who try to be funny, but it's more emberassing than anything else.

If only you could finally get your games some proper controls. The walking mechanic is pointless in my opinion. Why not just use the mouse to click somewhere? Why this complicated item-combining mechanic? Why can't the inventory always be open?
Why does Guybrush walk slowly into the screen before I can take over control? Unnecessary waiting there. Especially in the jungle it's annoying.

    Congrats, lovely game!
(PS: I'd prefer full games instead of episodes, they are too short)

    Episode 1:

    Episode 2:

    !?

    Episode 3:
    DeCAVA is STAN
    !?
Okay, I made the last one up.

My guess is that allows your brain time to react and change the way you're making Guybrush walk, so that he doesn't just run back the opposite direction and make you backtrack. That's always a danger when you have camera-relative controls... if the camera changes to face a different direction you might start running around all crazy until you realize there was a change. So I think the waiting is a necessary evil to prevent an even worse control headache.

I liked the episode, for the most part. I felt a few solutions were a bit too far out.
I never would have thought of the staring contest and then distracting them and THEN putting in the bird (I got the bird part easily, but combining the two distractions messed me up.
This episode did have some GREAT moments, though.
Winslow with his map, the bird melting, Guybrush getting his hand cut off (which actually surprised me quite a bit).

All in all, a great episode with only a few bad things. :)

that part confused me as well.

The only thing I thought could have been done better was the use of Spinner Cay. It's a beautiful place and it seemed to goto waste with only two simple shops (which were really just caves opening into the water). I thought there would have been more interaction there.

I loved the opening sequence of this episode far more than that of the first episode. But in truth, I think the second episode had so many small improvements over the first that it all came together to create a much better game overall. Can't wait to see if episode 3 continues to improve.

Agreed, because this guy has a great LeChuck voice in my opinion and that would probably mean he could do other villain voices really well!

At first I thought that was reasonable, given that the Vacaylians were an aquatic race; I figured that most of their city would be underwater. Then I remembered that Guybrush can be underwater for ten minutes, so that kind of negated that excuse for not having more locations.

On the whole, I loved this episode! Opening with a rousing swordfight
that gets Guybrush's hand replaced with a hook
? As cliché as that was, I think that got something piratey back in the game. Monkeying around with ... monkeys, voodoo curses, ancient civilizations, etc. etc. is all well and good, but I'm glad they got some good old fashioned violence in.

I was also really amused by the merfolk. Sure, they were a less traditional version of merpeople, but makes complete sense. When was the last time you looked at a fish and could tell what gender it was?

Human LeChuck is great! Score another one for messing with the formula! And his voice actor is spot on. He sounds so friendly and cheerful, and did I detect the slightest hint of ulterior motive, or am I just being overly suspicious?

Anyway, I can't wait for the next one!

    Human LeChuck + Kevin Blackton = Ear-euphoria.

    Adventure Gamers Review:
"All of these characters are excellently voiced; Dominic Armato sounds as good as ever as Guybrush and all supporting characters hit their notes perfectly. The real standout is Kevin Blackton as LeChuck, who is absolutely delightful in his new voice and a complete scene-stealer every time he's around."
