Maniac Mansion 3D remake almost done!

edited September 2011 in General Chat
Did anybody else here know about this? I's a fan remake from a German developer, and they're scheduled to release it in German and English early next year.

That actually looks pretty impressive! I hadn't heard anything about it, thanks for the link! :)

He's so slow! How do you expect to run from the Edisons at that speed? Looks rally good though, the lighting could be more dynamic.

For two years now, German developer Ernie "The Runner" and his team have worked to re-create classic adventure game Maniac Mansion in 3D. While its character models and environments aren't nearly as impressive as that other LucasArts 3D remake/demo for Monkey Island 2, keep in mind that the group began the project as a way to learn how to use Gamestudio.

What the hell is he talking about? That isn't a Monkey Island 2 remake video from Lucas Arts, it's some guy in his basement...

Neither are Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth or Broken Sword 2.5 but people have eagerly awaited those for years as well.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of a 3D Maniac Mansion, but I'm not sure how LucasArts are going to feel about it. So even if these guys manage to finish the game, the lawyers would most likely stop them from releasing it.

The MI2 remake video he's talking about was an amateur fan-made thing too. But that guy also works as a professional game developer during the day, so he's got a bit more experience under his belt.

This is a commendable effort, but not something I feel would enhance my Maniac Mansion experience. But I'm a purist, and I hated the new graphics in the Monkey Island Special Edition too.

Looks nice, until it starts moving. :P

He does mention it's an early video though, and the animation is nowhere near final.

Another fan group managed to release Maniac Mansion Deluxe, but even so, last time I looked on the website I found it on, it has disappeared.

I think it should be okay for people to download these games if they own a legal copy of the original Maniac Mansion, but since there's no way of knowing who will download it then you could be right.

The project was officially shut down as was a ROTA adventure game, I'm surprised that they haven't shut down FOA2...or DOTT 2.

I didn't hate the graphics of MI:SE, just the incredibly awkward PC control scheme. Oh, and Guybrush's new hair. And the fact it was pretty much just built over the old game, with all the limitations that came with such a pointless decision.

    But I digress.

I don't have a problem with games being remade, so long as the remake is valid and actually improves upon the original. I like to think Tomb Raider Anniversary is a good example of a 'good' remake. This, while commendable, doesn't seem to be particularly needed, what with Maniac Mansion Deluxe (still) being available.

From what I've seen, it looks technically sound, but lacks soul. By that, I mean the little things that makes games really come to life - little tweaks in the animations that don't translate from 2D to 3D, music that loses its retro charm when re-scored, things like that. And there's no point in remaking a game if there's no soul to it.

I wasn't much of a fan of Maniac Mansion in the first place (any adventure game where you can fail/die is an instant turn-off for me), and this, for all its fancy bells and whistles, doesn't make me feel any different. So yeah, I'll pass on this one.

    Hi, there!

i am one of the Developers of Maniac Mansion 3D, and i want to give u a link to more screenshots of our Game.
If you read the pages of comments under the screenshots u can get even more info about us, and what we plan for it.
Please keep in mind that the Youtube Video is out of date and even the screens are not all final state. I consider to delete the video, because many people think, that this is the final game, because they dont read the info.

Pleas feel free to post your opinion in this Forum or directly under the Screenshots

Looks very nice for a fan project! I hope it'll be in English as well. The only thing that bothered me about the video was that there were birds chirping....at night....next to a creepy mansion....kinda ruins the atmosphere to me.
  • edited November 2009
The birds normaly are very silent in the backround and there are crickets making the typical noise, but short before the recording i deleted the crickets by accident and so they are not in the video.
By the way, we changed the look of the bottom interface yesterday.
    It now looks much better.

as a little "Thank you" for the last 2 great Radio shows, we postet 2 new screen ( with new Bernhard model, and new Verbs ) at their Forum.
If u want to risk an eye, follow the link, but remember everything is still Beta.

I still think a bird chirping is a misplaced sound effect in a creepy night-time atmosphere. I don't really see how it fits. Looking forward to the release either way!

You are not "up to Date" ! The Birds are deletet already.

Here some pictures with the new lights Pegamode build in.
If the power is shuted down, the only light is coming from candles, fireplaces and moonlight falling throuh doors and windows.
If the Player comes into a dark room from a room with lights on next to it, the light will shine through the open door or the trapdoor or whatever opening is connecting them.

We now that Project and one guy behind it. it is very good looking in my opinion. It a good way for fans to choose between 2D and 3D.

    Keeping my eye on both.

Which reminds me, I wish the Mania episodes were translated into english. :(

Wow, both games look amazing. It's like a realistic version vs the cartoon version. This will be two very different games, though, not only graphics wise.

I've never played MM, so i unfortunately won't be downloading it. For someone who doesn't own the original, it would technically be piracy for me to download it. I really wish they'd release the original on Steam...
  • edited December 2009
Or you could try to find "Day of the Tentacle", which features the original game on an in-game computer.

I might just do that. I can get it and S&M hit the road for £18 on ebay, which is pretty decent.

I don't really understand what owning the original has to do with downloading a fan-made remake. Can someone explain?
  • edited December 2009
It looks pretty decent, but I'm not convinced. I dunno what program is being used, but it doesn;t look like much has been done, just a few areas. It could be really good, but as I'll be surprised if it has was fixed for the new version in 2011.

You know how it's illegal to download a mp3 if you don't own the CD? Same kind of thing.
Although here, it would be more like downloading a cover of a mp3 without owning the original CD (and, I'm assuming, without the person doing the cover ever getting any rights).
  • edited January 2010
I don't think downloading a fan-made remake of a game you don't own is more illegal than making a fan-made remake to begin with. Generally companies turn a blind eye to non-profit fan projects (especially Lucas with Star Wars fanfilms), but it's still TECHNICALLY a violation of copyright.

But if they don't get in any trouble for making it, you shouldn't get in trouble for downloading it.

I think doggans is closer to the truth here. I think it's probably illegal for them to remake a game by LucasArts without permission, and therefore, if you download it, then you have participated in an illegal activity. Whether or not you own the original game is irrelevant. But, like doggans said, Lucasfilm has been known to turn a blind eye to fan made Star Wars films, and with Darrel Rodriguez interested in reviving the adventure game genre, he might allow a non-profit, fan made remake of the original Maniac Mansion.

Lol, it was guy.brush from the Mixnmojo forums. Everybody seemed to think it an official Lucasarts game preview thingy.

Yeah, it's illegal either way, but more of a grey area if you own the original one, at least I feel that way. I think people are more likely to tolerate it if they know the people did own the original.
Anyways, I was just trying to explain what I thought someone else meant when they said they wouldn't download it because they didn't have the original. I could be wrong in my interpretation.
